Chivas USA? Really?
Yeah, I'm not sure if they're capable of doing much damage without a healthy Galindo. Plus El Guzano will likely be in England by then.
And the Mexican clubs are 100% A-OK with playing up here. Cash money heals all wounds.
True. I'll have to look up how the money works, plus there are plenty of Mexican fans that'll show up to games here in the US.

Sounds like I missed a helluva game. :(

Just checked and stupid FSC will be replaying Chivas-SJ tomorrow.
Even on paper that's a bad decision. :/

Ricardo Quaresma’s price-tag has dropped considerably and Inter could secure the talent for just £19m in the next few days.

Porto had raised his asking price to around £32m, but the fact he barely featured for Portugal in Euro 2008 lowered the winger’s profile.

It is now reported in Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha that the two clubs are close to an agreement that could be made official in a matter of days.

The 24-year-old still has a contract tying him to Porto until 2011, but is eager to test himself elsewhere.

He had been linked with Chelsea, but Felipe Scolari’s refusal to use him as anything other than a reserve in Austria and Switzerland this summer scuppered that plan.

Instead Quaresma wishes to reunite with his former Porto boss Jose Mourinho at Inter and his name was at the top of the new Nerazzurri boss’ transfer wish-list.

We bought a Serbian defender, Branislav Ivanovic, from Lokomotiv Moskow last January for 9mil. The guy never played first team for us due to fitness and injury. The wires are reporting he's off to Juve for 12mil.

A couple Arsenal stories this morning - not sure how much there is to them. First one sounds like a bunch of malarkey and the second is dubious, as well.

NOW IT'S KLAASENAL
EXCLUSIVE by DAVID HARRISON

ARSENAL are ready to launch an £18million bid for Dutch goal ace Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is lining up the prolific Ajax striker as a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor — if the £30m-rated Togo hitman is sold to Barcelona.

The double deal would net the Gunners a £12m profit.

But the Frenchman insists that sort of business is essential and will stun every Arsenal fan by admitting: We are now a SELLING club.

The £24m annual mortgage payments on the club’s £360m Emirates Stadium have become such a burden that Wenger admits he must now flog big-name players EVERY season.

He declared: “The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players.”

And he has warned this official policy could continue for another 17 YEARS!

He added: “We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions — national and European —while having to free up - for 17 more years - an annual surplus of £24m to pay for our stadium.

“The club’s strategy is to favour the policy of youngsters ahead of stars and to count on the collective quality of our game.”

Under those guidelines, the Huntelaar-Adebayor swap would make good business sense.

Huntelaar, 24, has a staggering scoring record in club and international football.

He has scored 163 goals in 220 matches in Holland and seven times in 12 appearances for the national team.

He is best pals with Arsenal striker and fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie.

Huntelaar is keen to move to England and Dutch sources claim Van Persie has told his pal how good life is at Arsenal during Euro 2008.

A Dutch insider revealed: “Arsenal are keen on Huntelaar and he has confirmed he would be keen to discuss a move.

“Klaas-Jan is an out and out goalscorer – just the sort Arsenal have needed for many seasons.

“He might not have the silky skills you associate with a Wenger team but he has an amazing knack for putting the ball in the net.”

Adebayor is a £30m target for Spanish giants Barcelona, who are also eyeing Gunners team-mate Alexander Hleb.

Arsenal lead the race for Andrei Arshavin
By Jonathan Wilson
Last Updated: 2:26am BST 06/07/2008

Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Andrei Arshavin after Chelsea ended their interest in the Russian playmaker yesterday. Arshavin has his heart set on a move to London because he believes it will be more valuable for his children to learn English than Spanish.

The Russian forward, who excelled at Euro 2008, is expected in London this week after his coach at Zenit St Petersburg, Dick Advocaat, gave him 12 days off to resolve his future.

A source close to the Russia playmaker explained that Arshavin, who values education sufficiently to have completed a university diploma in fashion design, is keen for his two-year-old son, Artyom, and his three-month-old daughter Yulia, to experience life in Britain.

Another source has confirmed that Arshavin has already made plans to learn English: "One of the main conditions [on Arshavin's part] is studying English. That's why a translator will be near Andrei when he arrives in London. He will teach him intensively for two months."

Arshavin, 27, is seeking an annual contract of £6.3 million, while Zenit are holding out for at least a £20 million transfer fee. The director general of Zenit, Maxim Mitrofanov, has confirmed that there has been only one firm bid for Arshavin, a £12.5 m offer from Barcelona. Zenit have offered him a lucrative new contract but it will not deter him from moving to England.

With Roman Abramovich eager to bring a Russian to Stamford Bridge, and Arshavin making London his preferred destination, Chelsea looked like being the perfect solution but the combination of the player's wage demands and the signing of Deco has caused them to withdraw from the race.

"I don't believe that after this acquisition of Deco the club have retained their interest in Arshavin," said Dennis Lachter, Arshavin's agent. "Zenit want to get at least 30 million euros [£23.8m], and foreign clubs offer no more than 20 million euros [£15.8m].

"The situation is not at an impasse though. The transfer period only ends on Aug 31 and clubs are only just beginning to be proactive in the transfer market.

"Several potential buyers are involved as clubs sell their players," he added. "Arshavin's future may be dependent on conversations about [Alexander] Hleb, [Emmanuel] Adebayor, Cristiano Ronaldo and others."
Arshavin has a fashion design degree? Can't you get an English tutor in Spain? Hmmmmmm....

so, if the new stadium wasn't built, do you think Arsenal would have won at least one trophy in the last couple of years (or have been in better position to win this year)?

would you rather have a new stadium or a trophy

if Hleb goes I'd like me some Arse shavin.

It's all speculation at this point, but Zenit have been quite clear that Arsenal have shown interest/put an offer in. If we can sell Hleb for 15 million and get Arshavin for around the same it would be great.

There's doubts over his fitness but I'm sure he'd be up to scratch by christmas. That would also give Nasri and Vela some time to settle in and give Theo a lot of starts.

Just need to keep hold of Adebayor or replace him by somebody equally good (Huntelaar would be nice of course even though he's been far too complementary about Manyoo).

With all this stupid talk about transfer fees and buying and selling by the end of the summer it could look something like this.

In:
Ramsey 5m
Nasri 12m
Arshavin 16m
Huntelaar 16m
Bischoff -free-
Vela -already paid-
------------------
49 million

Out:
Adebayor 30m
Hleb 15m
Flamini -free-
Lehmann -free-
-----------------
45 million

4 million spent on one extra player basically and a definite improvement except for the defensive midfield.

I just read that Stuttgart will test against Arsenal on the 30th and that Hertha Berlin will play against Liverpool.

That should be fun.

I read about the first article earlier and honestly I can only think it's a load of crap. As far as I know, the stadium pretty much covers itself with payments and no players would need to be sold. You can obviously make t he arguement that Arsenal can't afford to pay every player massive wages over £100k, but, that's going to hurt any club other than Chelsea in the long run.

I'm pretty sure they've taken Wenger's words and twisted it to sound worse then it is.

Honestly I wouldn't be suprised if F&O were involved in the article. :-/

considering this comes from a news conference a week ago and nobody else picked up on it I'd say they twisted Wengers words. it's the news of the world after all.

I'm pretty skeptical about those quotes as well. I think if we needed the money bad enough the board would ask Kroenke to come on as a member.

It just doesn't seem like something Wenger would say. In the past, he's always said we aren't a selling club. Weird.

have they really?

decent statistics, very young. But 20 million Euros seems a bit much for a 21 year old.

My cat is not the source unfortunately, but it's according to some Dutch media. Never seen him play.

only legitimate journalists use all caps and exclamation points. Don't forget the "!@#$" as well.

All footballer wages in the top flight are quoted after-tax. This was revealed after Riise's payslip made it's way out to the public.

Also Wenger comments....no smoke...

Barry signs for Liverpool

:lol

those outside of UK might not get it

Ok, so I'm back from a one week vacation and tomorrow it's time for me to get back to work, what a bummer:/. In the week that's gone by, have I missed any big transfer news, have Liverpool signed Silva yet and are we any closer to a new thread?

Anyway, In the week that's gone by I have masturbated to Torres' goal against Germany in the Euro final many times and read the excellent book, but not as good as I thought, "Lolita".

Yes, one could point out that I on some level resemble the main character of the book as masturbating to Torres could be claimed as pedophilia (duh, torres is called El Niño ("The Kid)), but no one will ever no of it..

Oh, and I think I had a "better" fourth of july than some of you yanks:

Holy crap!

I remember hearing he was offered ~ 10k more than Arsenal, to about 65 / 75k but if it's over 100k AFTER TAX no wonder he jumped. Good thing Milan are gonna bankrupt themselves soon!

Anyway, other Arsenal news:

Sky Sports said:
Justin Hoyte plans to fight for a first-team spot at Arsenal next season, rather than look for a move.

The young full-back is still striving to establish himself in Arsene Wenger's plans at Emirates Stadium.

He made 15 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions last season, but started only two games in the Premier League.

With Bacary Sagna the first-choice right-back, Hoyte's opportunities in the coming campaign could again be limited.

However, the 23-year-old wants to be given the chance to repay Wenger's faith in his ability.

"There are rumours every day, but I am contracted to Arsenal," said Hoyte in the News of the World.

"The boss has said great things about me, has good plans for me and I need to show him what I'm capable of."

Seems like a decent guy, but definately (so far) not Arsenal quality.

Sorry QVT, It just didn't capture me as much as I thought it would. It got a bit tedious in the middle part when they were travelling together, Humbert and the girl. Their "relationship" was stale in those parts.

the final was amazing today, probably the best tennis game ever. Certainly the best I've ever seen and I've seen a few. I actually saw Federer live once quite a while before he was number 1 and before he won Wimbledon (in Vienna in the quarterfinals, he actually lost that one against Koubek).

As long as you don't watch womens tennis, tennis is great to watch

:lol at people believing that Milan is giving Flamini 100k every week. He will approx get 4million € /every year (just like Pirlo, Gattuso, Nesta and other big names in the team).

We won't get backrupt soon, Fester and Berlu are probably stealing some of the money but we should have waaay more. As I wrote a couple of days ago, we've earned over 700 million euros for the past 5 years but only spent 60 million of it.

I am on the Nadal bandwagon now. THE REIGN OF TERROR IS OVER. Fuck Roger Boreder.

And I don't know why you wouldn't watch women's tennis, it's softcore pornography!

Watching "Bend it Like Beckham" on tv. Keira Knightley needed a sandwich back then, and she needs one now.

She looked great in bend it like beckham.

Much more normal than she does now.

She was 17 btw.

I was hoping Djokovic would join the Federer/Nadal steamroller but being a tennis player from the east it seems he's inherited the trait of mentally collapsing under any sort of pressure. All those eastern players constantly looking at their dads in the stands thinking of all the beatings they received when they were younger, I swear it makes them complete wrecks when the going gets tough. Specially the women.

BTW Nadals win has been on the cards since his amazing queens tournament.
