It could be one of the most closely contended Premiership seasons in a long time, with 4 teams chasing. The start of the season will be vital, so I am quite nervous and hopeful we can translate the pre season form into the league.
If they can keep up their pre-season form then they could win the league. There are lots of people prediction gloom and doom for arsenal, but I'm sure that they will impress us this season. From what Ive seen in pre season, arsenal have been very good. They completely outplayed Inter, who were their toughest pre season opponent. The team has been playing very well and van persie has been incredible. He's going to be the person who makes the difference.

How the hell is this even news?

The Craig Gordon to Villa rumour has been getting stronger over the weekend. I don't think he took part in one of Hearts' friendlies.

As for Curtis Davis, I think that'sa bit pricey for someone who hasn't played in the premiership before. We're chasing a Danish central defender who I much prefer the look of and would probably be cheaper too.

pre season is, or at least can be, a very different animal from the league though.

That's not to say that I'm not pleased with Arsenal looking to be in good shape so early on, but nobody really knows where they stand until Sunday at the very least.

I'm very curious what line up Wenger has in mind. I have a feeling this is what he might go for:

---------------- Lehmann ----------------
-- Sagna -- Toure -- Gallas -- Clichy --
- Eboue - Fabregas - Diaby - Rosicky -
------------------ Hleb -------------------
--------------- Van Persie ---------------

Not a bad lineup. I'd like to see Eduardo play though as well. Is he in football condition yet? I feel like he may have had to up his stamina for the English league.

I don't think he'll start him just yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Eduardo come on early second half. Especially if we shouldn't be up by a couple of goals at that point.

Walcott should come on at some point too.

I have no idea about Eduardo's fitness levels, unfortunately I haven't seen him since the Salzburg game, where he looked a bit tired after an hour or so but stayed on till the end. He looked a good player to me that day, if a bit wasteful with his chances (then again, he did wear an Arsenal shirt, so no surprise there)

edit: oh, typo. Eduardo's fitness levels, not his Eduardo's fitness level. I didn't find anything about that out. Promise.

Eduardo will be introduced slowly. Wenger will start putting him on when there is 30 minutes to go and slowly give him more time to play. I dont think it will be that long before we see him start games. I think he's going to turn out to be a good signing.

Apparently Derby County is interested in Mika Vayrynen, and they'd be willing to pay some 3.5 mil EUR. Vayrynen hasn't got much chance to play with players like Simons, Afellay, Aissati, Bakkal, Culina and Mendez higher in the pecking order, so I guess he'd be willing to leave, and PSV would accept such a bid. I wonder though, if Vayrynen would be willing to go to Derby.

So looks like Gordon is going to be leaving Hearts for either Villa or Sunderland.

I want everyone to have their fingers crossed he comes to Villa!

Pretty much what I would think, as well. Is Rosicky ready to go a full 90? He's been a bit off. Perhaps the more attacking minded combo on the left of Clichy in front of Traore or Eduardo in front of Clichy might work a bit better, but I think you're closer to what Wenger wants. Adebayor is still having groin problems and Gilberto isn't match fit(?).

yeah, Traore is definitely an option too. Rosicky apparently looked a bit rusty in the last couple of games, but I wouldn't worry too much. He looked excellent against Salzburg until his injury (he was our best player together with Diaby until then) and he has a week to recover now.

Adebayor is very likely to be out for Fulham and Gilberto will need a couple of weeks still I suppose.

I'd prefer for Diaby to get the time as he offers a little more steel in the middle of the field in terms of ball-winning and tackling, but Wenger has been playing Flamini a lot in the preseason in Gilberto's absence.

I like Flamini because he can fill in, not so much as a starter when everyone is fit though. Wenger knows, though.

Diaby really is awesome btw, his strength is incredible. He's a joy to watch, especially live.

Yup, I agree. It'd be fun to watch Diaby live at some point, but I'll have to wait for my trip out to the Emirates, I guess. Any word on how long Gilberto will be out? I heard that he needed some time off after the Copa America, but there wasn't much talk about how long that might be. I completely understand that he needs a break, but you figure the start of the season might be a convenient time for him to head back.

I would think that he just started to train again last week or even this one.

I think it's gonna be 2 or 3 more weeks before we see him start a game. i am guessing though, i haven't heard anything about it.

why is nobody making a season preview podcast? how stupid that they have a summer break.

anyway, Gilberto starts training this week btw, either today or tomorrow.

Are there very many football podcasts? I've heard the one on the Guardian is solid, but otherwise I don't know much about them. Oh, and I guess there's the Arsecast, too.

the guardian one is good. There's an okayish one from the Times, although they do have a woman on the program.

I don't know about any other decent ones.

I guess that ultimately my problem with podcasts is that I don't have that much time to listen to them all week. I can't do it at work or while commuting, so it's basically just for if I'm at home doing something and have a chance to turn it on. I guess I could do it while I'm cooking dinner or something like that. I'm always shocked that some people have time to listen to 4-5 podcasts per week. Seems like it adds up after a while.

Have you been listening to the Arsecast? I still haven't gotten around to that.

yeah, I like the arsecast. The guy has a decent sense of humour and I love the Irish accent.

I am listening to podcasts while playing usually (with sportsgames anyway), or while surfing the web.

Oh, and I have no life. It does help

I don't like football podcasts, they just annoy me. Too many opinions I can't respond to.

You betting this year, had?

Sounds like Nowak is going to head up the US Olympic team. There are high hopes for this squad.

Steve Goff said:
Nowak to Guide Olympic Squad?

I am hearing that Peter Nowak, former MLS star, former United coach and current national team assistant, will indeed oversee the U.S. under-23 (Olympic) team and prepare a squad to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. Speculation has been out there for months, so it would not come as a surprise. No confirmation from the USSF and no comment from Nowak's N.Y.-based agent, Ron Waxman.

CONCACAF qualifying will take place early next year at a U.S. site (or sites) to be determined. I heard Tampa mentioned, but I don't know if it will actually be held there. One of the difficulties for the U.S. team will be getting players released from European clubs because it's not a senior international competition.

In 2000, the Americans qualified for the Sydney Games after finishing second to Honduras in Hershey, Pa., and four years later, they lost to host Mexico in the semifinals and were eliminated from contention.

For 2008, CONCACAF will again have two of the 16 participants. (The women's event has been expanded from 12 teams to 16.) Brazil, Argentina, China, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands and Serbia have already secured spots in the men's tournament.

Soccer America magazine had a nice spread last week on U.S. Olympic hopefuls and listed many players from the current U-20 team (Adu, Bradley, Zizzo, Altidore, Seitz, Rogers), as well as Jonathan Spector, Benny Feilhaber, Sacha Klejstan, Charlie Davies and Lee Nguyen, who have all been capped by the senior national team. To be eligible, a player had to have been born after Jan. 1, 1985. Teams that qualify have the option of adding three overage players for the final tournament.
I thought they got rid of the overage player rule for this year and everyone had to be under the limit.

Well if you're using the Fink Tank, they refine it every year as they keep learning, so the same ideas from last year won't necessarily apply this time.

Like I found that betting on matches over 50% would have brought me a loss last year, but betting at over 60% a healthy profit. But I was looking at the first predicted results, and the only ones over even 60% are really obvious ones, and almost all the matches have lower highest odds of either a win, lose or draw than last time (because I still have my tally of last year's results).

I mean, that makes sense given what I found when following the betting, but it does kind of screw me up when knowing at what level to bet. Maybe I can bet at 55% now for example. So I'll just stick with over 60% for now to be safe and keep track of all results over 50% for a month or so and try and get an idea.

Diaby is so going to be the new Viera...I just hope he has a longer fuse than ole' Paddy.

Who gives a flying ****...

Yesterday was a lot of fun. Watched the Hungary GP, then left for the hour trip to the bar to catch the second half of the charity shield match, which was eons more entertaining than the FA Cup debacle. The shootout was hilarious...SWP's penalty was a disgrace, Rio's penalty was a revelation, and Rooney's 'point and shhh' reaction to the Chelsea end was LOL stuff. After staying back there for a few hours, I went to one of the pre-game TFC haunts that the U-Sector supporters club hangs at, called the Box Car. Stayed there for an hour, than we did the 20 minute march to the stadium. Along the way we went by the pre-game spot for the Red Patch Boys supporters club, where they were filling up a couple of red double decker buses. So the U-Sector threw a bunch of toilet rolls at them from across the street (there's a bit of an intense but friendly rivalry with the two groups), then got into a "WHO ARE YA?!" battle, before going into several pro-TFC/anti-Beckham songs. Stuff like this makes me glad I live in this town.

The actual game was pretty good as well...after last week's disaster against Chicago, it was good to see the team not just show up, but seriously outplay the Galaxy. Still, with all the injuries we're clearly lacking the ability to put anything in the net, thus going four straight games without a goal and fifth without a win.

There were some great signs too, a couple of which are shown below ("Money buys Becks, not respect" - "Landycakes Sucks" - "Becks didn't save soccer, WE DID")

The following pics and vid gives a small taste of how nutty we got (pics are courtesy of someone who isn't me).

Shinobi I envy you I really do. I remember being the first person to try to get you to support an MLS team coming to your town and look what happens. You get all that and I'm stuck with Giants Stadium and millions of Mexicans that would rather ejaculate on their Barcelona jersey than come to a Red Bulls match. I watched yesterday's game with feelings of amazement and jealousy, and I wasn't kidding TFC is what MLS wants the league to be.

They make for excellent listening while you're dropping a deuce, unless you're one of those nancies that defecates in 5 minutes or less.

What's happened with TFC doesn't make much sense to me. I figured it could work out, but I didn't expect it to come anywhere close to this. It's really a shame that Becks didn't play, as more viewers would've tuned in and got a taste of the atmosphere.

Meanwhile I'm more determined than ever to get a season ticket now...though with a 3000 man waiting list I don't see how that's taking place (unless a good number of this year's season tickets were bought simply to see Beckham, which is possible).

that's good to know. I am the more adventurous guy, so I'll start at 55%. We should know pretty soon how things are working out.

this time I have to win.

German cup.

The fink tank doesn't really work for games on neutral ground as there always is a home team. Can't really use that.

Ok, I was just asking because we were going to add a "Fink Tank" entry for the predictions league, so that might be problematic for things like the Community Shield or the latter stages of cup competitions where they're played at a neutral venue.

The points-per-game standings in MLS. It's crazy how much they backloaded the Galaxy's schedule because of Beckham. They could be playing 7-8 matches in August if they stay in the Superliga.

There was also a note last week that San Jose have 1100 season ticket deposits down so far. Not a bad start. and hopefully they can keep the momentum up. The expansion draft will be in November.

true.

what we could do of course is make one away and one home for each team and take the middle.

not quite perfect, but close enough.
