Cannon's alright... FOR A FORMER QUAKE!
Half of the former Quakes are in Houston and you jerks took the other half. His twin brother, Jon Cannon, went to high school with me. He pitched in the minor leagues for a while but I think his shoulder gave out.

That whole family is ridiculously talented athletically. Their younger brother played water polo with me and ended up playing in Italy for a while, and their other younger brother was a professional skater for a while.

Damn bro you played water polo? Then again I played youth Rugby for a while.

Yeah, I played four years in high school and four years in college. It was fun, but I haven't played in years. Ok, time for sleep. I'll leave you with this:

I played futbol and beisbol as a kid and then competitive tennis until I hit puberty and became freakin' huge. Then it was on to throwing shot and discus.

Yep I played futbol and beisbol because my dad made me (Cuban but a HUGE futbol fan for some reason). Loved footie but baseball ain't my thing. I played ice hockey for a year but was too expensive, and eventually got into rugby through a youth group based around Central Park. Now I'm a futbol fanatico, an ice hockey fan, and I wish some form of Rugby would be shown on TV here =( At least the World Cup starts in a month. Go USA Eagles!

I've been lurking in this thread for a few days. I've started following MLS on the cusp of all the Beckham coverage, although it sucks not having a local team to root for this season. So much has changed from the last time I watched, right around the 2002 World Cup (New York Red Bulls?).

I wish I could have played hockey growing up. You can only learn so much from the stands / couch, even with years of experience doing it. :(

The Bay Area got an expansion awarded to it so you should soon have a local team again.

I would enjoy hating Veron for a third time. Come to DC, buddy! All ESPN would show is United-Galaxy matches. :lol

edit: Speaking of the home team, the rumors about Raphaël Wicky coming over seem to have been premature.

thanks.

I know Mama Smurf won't want to hear that, but I hate his bloody wife. Beckham's wife that is, because Mama doesn't yet have one as far as I know. She might be an alright person, but I cannot stand to see her.

Though it is better on pictures when she's not wearing a lot.

well, 5 of my players didn't play on Wednesday and I really didn't feel like changing things just because of the European qualifiers. I'm still quite close to the top.

So basically, I will be on top soon again.

Blades seek Hammers compensation
Sheffield United have started legal action in order to gain compensation from West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Yorkshire club were demoted after the Premier League opted not to dock West Ham points for breaking rules over the signing of striker Carlos Tevez.

United have estimated the cost of their relegation at between £30m-£50m.

The Blades claim they have new evidence concerning West Ham's termination of Tevez's third-party ownership.

Statement: Sheff Utd spokesman Toby Craig

United are seeking West Ham's agreement to go to arbitration through the Football Association in order to settle their claim.

A Blades spokesman said: "After consideration and discussion with our legal advisers Sheffield United are today initiating legal proceedings against West Ham United.

"We are seeking substantial compensation for our relegation from the Premier League.

"This action is distinct from the arbitration proceedings between the club and the Premier League during the close season.

"We have always said that we will do everything in our power to secure justice for Sheffield United and restore the integrity of English football which has been tarnished by this affair.

"Once proceedings have been issued we will await a response from West Ham before making any further statements."

The Blades recently failed in their High Court bid to force the Premier League to take disciplinary action against West Ham.

United took their case to the High Court after an arbitration panel rejected their claim against the Premier League, which failed to deduct points from the Hammers over the transfers of Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

The independent commission's verdict in April said West Ham had pleaded guilty to breaking the rule forbidding third party ownership and of failing to provide correct documentation.

The panel found West Ham had committed "an obvious and deliberate breach of the rules" and held them "responsible for dishonesty and deceit."

Instead, the Hammers, who avoided the drop by three points, were fined a record £5.5m by the Premier League.

The Blades claim West Ham gained an unfair advantage by signing an illicit player in Tevez, who has since signed for Premier League champions Manchester United.

I really hope this club never ever comes back to the Premiership. I've had it with this shit.

I have no desire to marry.

Having said that I think she's a nice person. Don't particularly like the way she always glams herself up, but in interviews and things she comes across as down to earth.

I don't know if I want Bentley to get called up to the England squad or not. On the one hand he'd be more rested and have less chance of injuries if he wan't, on the other I don't want him thinking being at Blackburn is holding back his international career and that he should look for a bigger club.

I expect Beckham and Wright-Phillips will be called up for Germany anyway though.

You'd have thought the Blades weren't close to mid-table halfway through the season, only to choke their position away through their own ineptness. Your team fucking sucked...get over it and shut the fuck up.

I wonder how Donovan feels about Beckham being the new captain. More importantly, what about the dogs?

:lol

Sevilla have turned down an offer from Chelsea for Alves. I think it's going to go down to the last day, with both sides hoping the other wants a result more. Sevilla want Chelsea to up their bid to get their man while they can, Chelsea want Sevilla to cash in on a player who doesn't want to be there.

Apparently this is the first time United have ever failed to win one of their first two Premiership games.

Relegation?
You might be wrong about that. I think we drew our first three games the season we won the treble. Thats what I've read. I don't remember myself, I've got an awful memory.

We drew against Leicester City (Beckham free kick saved us in the 90th min) and West Ham, beat Charlton and Coventry then lost to Arsenal.

We lost 3 times all season, Arsenal, Sheff Wed and Middlesborough, who beat us on the 26th December. We didn't lose again.

The Metrostars got bought out by the Austrian energy drink company last year to become Red Bull New York. They bought the team and the stadium rights from AEG. Many still consider the team to be the Metrostars and think of the Red Bulls as a lineage, while others think of the Red Bulls as a brand new team. Either way we're doing well. The Quakes are coming back for the 2008 season, and are using temporary venues until their soccer specific stadium gets built. If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

West Ham have signed Dyer. Hopefully that gets Bowyer out of the team.

Gerrard has a hairline facture of his tow...but will still play against Chelsea...but will sit out England - Germany. Which is after the Chelsea game.

Has there ever been a more obvious example that clubs are way more important than country nowadays?

They are and I'm glad they are.

Well I agree, but I can't see how they can make the case that Gerrard is fit to play on Sunday, but injured for Wednesday. I don't suppose they need to make the case though, they pay his wages.

well, especially for a friendly it would be silly to risk things.
If this was the deciding qualifying game he'd play, bet on it.

On the other hand - playing with a fractured toe is fucking dangerous and has ended players careers in the past, so there is no reason for him to even play against Chelsea. It's a stupid risk to take, even if it is a very important game.

yeah I know, I think she's an alright person too.

But still she's annoying the fuck out of me when I see her. Also, how she's holding the kid like a poodle is not very sympathetic.

There was always a degree of menace beneath the surface, though. Sparta were particularly upset with the lunge by Fabregas that ultimately put Tomas Repka, their captain, out of the game, and the way the young Arsenal player seemed to taunt Repka when he tried to struggle on despite a knee injury. As anyone who encountered Repka when he was at West Ham found, he is not a player to be crossed.

Repka, though, had started the unpleasantness pre-match when he suggested he was going to kick Fabregas out of the game; in fact, it was Van Persie he left in a heap as early as the second minute, but without punishment. Arsenal shaded the yellow cards, just as they shaded the game.

Good...don't start no shit, won't be no shit.

unfortunately I can't comment since I only heard the game on the radio - but it is very encouraging that our players are no longer taking any shit from twats like that. Fabregas was always a bit on the fiery end, so let's hope he didn't injure the guy on purpose (or that he is fit for the return leg, because I wouldn't be surprised if he was out to injure people. idiot).

Sagna, Flamini, Gallas and Diaby have all been called up to the French squad for next week. Let's hope nobody gets injured there either. There's also no need to play anyone for 90 minutes, not that Domenech will care.

They did an admirable job of standing up for themselves under difficult circumstances, but hopefully that isn't always necessary. I get concerned that they aren't entirely sure how close to the line they can stray without getting sent off - not having a ton of experience in this department. Also, the midfield looked a little lightweight without the presence of someone like Gilberto there. I hope we get Gilberto and Diaby back soon.

No surprises in the Blackburn line up:

--------------------Friedel---------------------

Ooijer------Samba-----Nelsen-----Warnock

Bentley----Savage------Dunn-----Pedersen

------------Roberts----Santa Cruz-----------

I'm sure Blackburn will test Arsenal's ability to stand up to rough play this Sunday.

Game starts in half an hour btw, if you can see it.

Hey, Five have the right to Serie A this season! Awesome! I really miss Football Italia, I used to love that show on Channel 4.

Inter - Udinese this weekend.

Here's some news I guess...

Wenger set to sign new deal
by Adam Marshall, 15 August 2007

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed to Setanta Sports that he expects to sign his new contract within a matter of days or weeks.

The Frenchman has been constantly linked with a move away from the North London club at the end of his present deal following the departure of Thierry Henry in the summer.

However, the much-respected Gunners boss insists the paperwork is nearly finalised on his extended contract.

"I want to do well for the club and I believe nobody can question my commitment to the club," he told Setanta Sports.

"There are things going on and I've said many times it will come out soon in the right way, you have to give me some time.

"Soon. S-o-o-n. What is very good is, in English, soon can mean in two weeks or two months. When I say soon it doesn't mean months, it means weeks or days."

http://sports.setanta.com/en/Sport/...ts/sport-space/football/great-britain-locale/

I don't think it's much of a news story to anyone with a brain (where else is Wenger gonna go at this stage? Tottenham? :lol), except that the new deal could be signed even sooner than I expected (I was thinking October myself).
