Schuster hits out at Reds
Real coach labels Liverpool ugly
By Lewis Rutledge Last updated: 5th September 2007
Schuster hits out at Reds
Schuster: Wary of Liverpool
Bernd Schuster has admitted that Liverpool are one of Real Madrid's main rivals for the UEFA Champions League, but has branded Rafa Benitez's side ugly and unattractive.
Liverpool have been one of the most successful teams in the Champions League in recent seasons, winning the competition in 2005 and then making the final last term.
They beat Barcelona en route to the final but Schuster believes their performance in that tie highlighted their lack of flair.
However, Schuster admits that Liverpool will once again be a threat in Europe after strengthening their squad over the summer.
"Liverpool rely on an unattractive style of football. They are an ugly team to play," Schuster told The Sun.
"Look how they gave Barcelona a going-over last season, when they knocked them out of the Champions League.
"I would rate Liverpool, like Milan, as our major rivals for the Champions League this season. They never tire of winning big trophies."
Of the other English clubs in the Champions League this season, Schuster added: "My preference would be to graft the Manchester United attack on to Chelsea's defence. That would be perfect."
Poll: Fifa singled out Crouch
Ref's revelations
By Amanda Cornforth Last updated: 5th September 2007
Poll: Fifa singled out Crouch
Crouch: Picked on
Former referee Graham Poll has revealed that Fifa instructed its referees to punish Peter Crouch for fouling.
Poll claimed that before the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, Fifa refereeing chiefs singled out the 6ft 7in England striker and told officials to crack down on him.
Crouch will miss Saturday's vital Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel through suspension after picking up two cautions in just five international matches this season.
In contrast, the forward received only two yellow cards in 29 appearances for Liverpool last term and Poll may have finally provided an explanation why.
Marked man
"At the World Cup last year, we were shown videos of England games," Poll said in The Sun.
"The head of refereeing at Fifa said, 'Look at this big fella Crouch. He's a real pain and getting away with too much. We need to mark him as a player we need to look out for'.
"We watched England's warm-up games and it was pointed out the way he used his arms. I tried to defend him, being English."
Crouch was subsequently booked against Paraguay and consistently cited for fouling during the tournament.
Warning
Former Premier League official Poll also admitted that the guidelines given to referees by their bosses can influence their decisions as he issued a warning to players.
Speaking on Radio Five Live Poll added: "You have to ask yourself as a ref if you are looking out for him all the time or only when he has done something that draws your attention.
"To prepare is fine but to prejudge is not. And, lo and behold, Crouch did get booked in Germany.
"He has been picking up cautions since and is out of Saturday's match.
"Players need to be aware that referees individually, or as a referee's team, can be tactical as well."
Mama Smurf said:At times Liverpool's football was unattractive last year, certainly, but not in the games against Barcelona.
Richards to extend Man City deal
By Chris Bevan
Manchester City's England defender Micah Richards says he is close to signing an extended deal at Eastlands.
Richards, 19, who already has a contract that lasts until 2010, hopes to agree new and improved terms.
"I am very happy at City," Richards told BBC Sport. "Hopefully we will have something signed very soon.
"I am just waiting for my dad who is in Africa setting up a soccer school. We have got talks with City as soon as he gets back in the next two weeks."
Richards has been one of City's star performers in Sven-Goran Eriksson's new-look side this season and he has also won four England caps under Steve McClaren.
"To me the most important thing now for my England chances with Euro 2008 coming up is to be playing week-in week-week out," added Richards.
"If I am at City then I am hopefully going to be doing that, so it will be the best thing for me.
"I have been offered a new contract and, although I have not signed anything yet, it should be sorted out soon.
City won their first three games of the season and, although they have lost their last two matches at Arsenal and Blackburn, Richards - who started his new column with BBC Sport this week - is still enjoying life at Eastlands.
"It has been great working with Sven although he is very different to our last manager Stuart Pearce," Richards explained. "Pearce was more of a motivator - getting everyone going. Sven is more of a chilled out guy.
"People do things in different ways. When some people speak they don't have to shout but you know what they want of you so you just go out and do it.
"Sven has just told us to do what we do in training during the game and to relax and enjoy our football. He wants us to do what we are good at and he puts no pressure on you.
"He says what he needs to say and you listen. He has spoken to all of us individually and told us that if we give 100% then anything is possible.
"It is an exciting time at the club but I wouldn't take anything away from Stuart Pearce either. We have a new owner and Sven has a lot more money to spend than Stuart had.
"But a big-name manager likes Sven attracts big-name players, which is what has happened."
Richards was particularly disappointed by City's defeat at Ewood Park on Sunday but is still confident that City are set to enjoy a successful season
"We are aiming for the top 10 at least but things are not going to happen overnight," he added.
"In our first three games we got the results. The last two games have not been so good but it is a long season.
"It's not like we didn't give 100% at Blackburn and going there is a very hard game. They have got a good set of players and they look like being a top-six side.
"We did well to get nine points from our first three games so you can look at it both ways. Before the season started we would have taken having nine points from our first five games."

David Moyes has warned that Everton face tough Uefa Cup opposition.
Metalist Kharkiv may not be the best known team in Europe, but Moyes is keen to point out that his side will have to be at their best to overcome the Ukrainian outfit.
He has already travelled to Kharkiv to take in their Ukrainian League game against Chernomorets Odessa - a game Everton's opponents won 2-0.
"I was quite impressed by what I saw," said the Everton boss. "They are probably the second or third best team in the Ukraine at this present time and we know that we are going to have to play very well to get through."
Moyes points out that there really are no straightforward matches at this stage of proceedings.
Well we know that theres no easy game in football nowadays no matter who you are playing," he said.
"You see that whether it be in cup football or on the world stage.
"So we wont get an easy game at all when we go to the Ukraine, in fact well get a very hard game. It was my first visit to the Ukraine and Im looking forward to going back when we play them in the cup in a few weeks time.
The Bolton News said:POLICE raided three Bolton pubs in a crackdown on the showing of live Premiership football matches.
Officers and staff from Media Protection Services seized thousands of pounds worth of satellite receiving equipment in the raids yesterday.
The three pubs were: the Bowling Green pub in Eskrick Street, Brownlow Fold; the Kings Arms on Chorley Old Road; and the Masons Arms on Blackburn Road, Egerton.
Last month Bolton police wrote to pub landlords warning that anyone showing live English football matches broadcast by foreign television stations will be prosecuted and their equipment seized.
They also warned that licenses could be revoked, fines imposed and about the possibility of imprisonment.
Rob Taylor, landlord of the Bowling Green, one of the pubs raided on Monday when £2,000 of equipment was seized, has vowed to fight any prosecution in court.
Insp Philip Spurgeon from Bolton police defended the seizing the satellite equipment.
"All licensees in Bolton had been warned of the possible repercussions of illegally broadcasting Premier League football matches," he said
hadareud said:Lehmann has been passed fit for Germany's game this Saturday.
this could get very interesting indeed once he returns to Arsenal at the end of the international break.
One guy will most certainly be pissed off and will want to leave this winter. Will it be Lehmann or Almunia?
hadareud said:what a joke. don't they have anything better to do?
Like the clubs or the broadcasters are losing any money on it. Sky have record levels of customers and I would think Setanta have as well.
I'd gladly pay for it if I had the option to see all Premier League games on TV, but nobody gives me the option. So I have to find another way.
And guess what, I even still go to the stadium and leave my money behind there. omgwewillallgobankruptifweshowmoregamesontv
fucking twats. in all other European countries you can see all the games you want.
Why do you think the English guys ask for streams alot of the time?h0pper said:So you're telling me that in England they don't even broadcast all of the Prem games on live tv?
So you're telling me that in England they don't even broadcast all of the Prem games on live tv?
while I agree to some extent it's not about that. If Lehmann is number 2 he will have to leave, it's as simple as that. He wants to play at next years Euro and if he's not number 1 at his club he won't be for Germany.h0pper said:Honestly at this point, Almunia has played well and he hasn't f***ed up lik Lehmann. I'd like to see Almunia start. I couldn't give a s**t where Jens goes if he wants to leave. After the mistakes he's made this far into the season it would be completely justified and he would have to be insane if he didn't agree with the decision.
Germany and Austria for sure, I'm quite sure Spain as well and probably even Italy.Mama Smurf said:Do other countries really show all their matches? I mean, last day of the season that would require 10 different channels showing games, doesn't seem realistic.

Uhhh that's because we live in America dude. If people would like MLS then we wouldn't have this problem.h0pper said:You guys can complain all you want but you have it much better than us here in the states. There are these commercials for XL Travel that they show on FSC. They advertise cheap ways to get over to England and go the matches of clubs of your choice. Their commercials show a guy in a bar wearing a Man Utd Rooney shirt and there's like 2 other people in the bar besides him, and he jumps up and starts screaming "YES ROOOOONEY!!!" and the other 2 guys look at him and leave. lol.
It's hard to even find people to talk about the Prem with here. Sure, I have some friends that like to watch a few matches, but they really don't know much about what goes on in the daily happenings of the league.
Plus, I've never ever been to a match in England/Europe. It sucks. Hopefully I'll make it there one day haha.
Doesn't A-League also have all their matches on Foxtel?seanoff said:Yeah in Australia both the AFL and NRL are fully broadcast.
AFL games - Fri night 1 game (Ch7)
Sat - 2.10pm East (Ch10), 2.10pm West (Fox), 2 night games (1 Fox, 1 Ch10)
Sun - 12.40 (Fox), 2.10 (7), 4.10(Fox)
8 games all available 4 on FTA, 4 on cable
Don't sky sports have multiple channels? Surely they could if allowed show a game on each channel.
That seems very old fashioned.
I mean on a sat night here i can watch AFL on FTA, AFL on Fox1, EPL fox2, NRL (2games I choose how to watch. - 2 small screens, or switch between them) on Fox3 and if anything special is on cable they put it on Fox 518.
Mama Smurf said:Now we have stupid internationals for the next 2 weeks, the next Premiership game is September 15th. When, really annoyingly, all 8 games that day are on at the same time...and all the top 4 and Blackburn are involved. I'd have loved to have watched Spurs - Arsenal, but it'll be Chelsea - Blackburn for me. That's not even mentioning matches like Everton - Man Utd and Portsmouth - Liverpool.
Osorio said:Uhhh that's because we live in America dude. If people would like MLS then we wouldn't have this problem.
Boooooooooo! Support your domestic league. If you don't, the terrorists have already won.h0pper said:I'm sorry man, I gave MLS a shot. Watched a few games and I just found myself falling asleep. It isn't even near the level of the EPL and that's what I'm used to so MLS just bores me to death.

Mama Smurf said:Remember this? It's probably in your scrapbook of The Greatest Mama Smurf Posts.
Don't watch neutral games as most of them bore me. Let me ask you something. Do you enjoy all EPL games or certain EPL games? Because you watched Kansas City vs Houston which holds no importance to me let alone you. Watch the local team and the more you feel passionate about the team you'll realize it ain't that bad. Remember if enough people support the MLS it will be the EPL.h0pper said:I'm sorry man, I gave MLS a shot. Watched a few games and I just found myself falling asleep. It should be. It's weird for me as it seems like no team scares me but every team scares me. It's wide open this year.Cornballer said:The MLS playoffs should be a lot of fun this year, too. There isn't a runaway best team, so most of the ties should be competitive.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that. He didn't play against Chicago and won't play against Chivas but I hope he comes back soon as we'll need him. We have John Wolyniec, Mike Magee, and Francis Doe that can take his spot for now so it's not all bad right now. Btw did you know that Angel is playing with a rib injury? I don't remember the last time he was subbed off either.Cornballer said:Altidore is hurt. Doesn't sound serious, but it explains why he didn't get a callup. Speculation is that it's a torn calf muscle that's been giving him trouble since the U20's.
Is that supposed to evoke the announcer from NBA Jam going, "BOOM SHAKALAKA"? :lolShinobi said:Some welcome news for Karakalaka...
Eastern European clubs have such awesome names. Metalist, Torpedo, Locomotive, etc. Except that whole Dynamo thing, that's totally Zzz.Kinan said:He is being somewhat generous here, but they indeed played good game against Odessa.
You can get MLB Extra Innings and MLB.tv (a web-only streaming service). The only problem with them is that MLB has carved up somewhat bizarre media markets so you might get blackouts for "local" teams you've never given a fuck about.Osorio said:I'm surprised there's no season packages over there. For instance I get something called MLS Direct Kick for $79 where I can watch every single MLS match and even playoff matches for the season. There's a package like that here for every sport except baseball I believe.
