Official Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas topic

Oh god damnit I want this game so much, gotta sit here and play now boring old VC to pass the time :(

I antisipate another 14 or so hours till I am playing, damnit!!! Though it may be a littel erlier if my EB actualy get it in before 1.. THEY BETTER!!

I am also considering buying a PSTwo tommorow, I don't want to go back out, plus I DO need a new controler, mine is so fucked up right now, if you even shake the damn thing it will activate various buttons. I t was quite retarded with the ruumble feature on, I would be speeding down a road in VC, hit a bump and magicly bail out of my car.

I love the new damage guns do. No more 5 pistol shots to down people like in GTA3 and VC. Its now 2, maybe three if you get a bad hit. And if you can line up a head shot its one. I love it.

I'm playing this on the new PSTwo and load times are virtually non-existent. The opening load some people were talking about was about 20 seconds if that. The frame rate is pretty bad though, I don't know how that's not noticeable (and I'm no whore about it).

I really don't give a shit though because the game is so dang packed and brilliant otherwise so far. God knows how long I'll play this game. I CAN'T WAIT to open Vegas clone.

I have to say that the art is great, and the details are just so much more....alive in this game. They've really upgraded the title. Much, much better level design, even at the beginning too. There's so many things it's overwhelming. Definitely has the potential to be all I wanted it to be.

There's alot of swearing in the game too, surprisingly for me. I knew i was M rated and there would be cursing but this is way over the top. Every line of dialog contains at least 1 "fuck" and I dont even know what the characters names are because they always are calling each other "nigga". Its kinda funny even. Im enjoying myself with it.

Right off the bat this feels was more LA than any part of true crime. Im lovin it.

The orange tint is gonna take some gettin used to. Doesn't look like you can turn it off. Kinda reminds me of the trails in Vice only not at annoying.

Oh yeah and is that the former boxer/guy from rush hour as one of the cops?

I'm gonna avoid this thread for spoilers cos even though I'm drooling all over the box, I can't play it until the midterm is over on friday :(

I was running around looking for a place to buy clothing and jacked a car that gave me access to "pimp" missions. I was picking up and drpping of ho's and getting $300 a trick.

Hey I've been doing those too. I got to 9 out of 10 and then ran out of time. I played the pimp missions for about an hour. This game is freakin huge. I got lost so many times.

The music is amazing. I haven't heard California Love (2pac) yet but everything else I was hoping for is there.
I found some sweet cars too. One that looked like an Iroc and another that was a macked out Civic hatchback.

So are there no packages this time around? Just tagging with spray paint?

Spent god knows how long on that damn Bee game thinking a high score would give me something cool but it doesnt. The Space Monkey game becomes senseless after getting the last upgrade.

Re: Home Invasion

I died after doing the mission and lost all my weapons. So I decided I'd rather re-do the mission and maintain all my weapons. This time I got all six crates, instead of just the minimum three. But nothing changed, besides having a cop after me because of all the "heat". So, what's the deal? Seems silly to have the alternative, but without any benefit.

I was dissapointed by Vice City for a couple reasons: Controls/Gameplay and most of the missions being boring.

Now the Gamespot review didn't even really bother with controls, but the IGN review said they were improved. The problem is, I really don't trust the fanboy mentality of IGN. Anyone who had the same issues with the previous games as I did that can give me some info on their improvement in this game?

The controls are fine, but GTA3/VC never bothered me in that respect. I can't be trusted!

What exactly bothered you before?

The controls, on-foot really, were not very tight and pretty simple. It really didn't play much differently than Rebel Strike on foot missions and that's not a good thing.

hmm, well, it's much more responsive. I found myself pressing punch in VC and him not reacting till quite a bit after and akwardly at that. This is more fluid. The gun system is still target and switch targets. It's decent imo. You can learn how to use these.

I also agree VC has some boring missions btw. I loved the game, it was real fun, but the constant tone throughout was absent. GTAIII had that mafia feel to it and muggy nyc. VC felt like a compilation of 80's nostalgia, scarface, miami vice, etc. I never felt for one character including Tommy really. The missions went from me escorting rockstars to selling porn. It was all very entertaining but not what you want from a real sequel. I already feel thrown into LA and the characters. Each mission is very real too so far and I like that. But yeah, on the controls, they're better but they're not exactly perfect. I will say though the biggest improvement is the fluid animation. No jerky punches, getting stuck jumping (can climb and jump fences which has me loving on foot stuff), or anything.

Rebel Strike required more, I'd argue. GTA's controls were effective in what was necessary, though no - not too smooth. But I can never understand these shortcomings bringing down the game for people as so little stress was put on it.

The combat, from what I remember, has been improved. You can lock on to opponents to punch them, if you couldn't before. Nothing awkward about it, at least.

You can climb walls/fences now, and very fluidly. You can even run a car into a wall, get out, jump on the car, and then jump the tall fence that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. It works surprisingly well.

Do we have any good impressions on the city layout(s)? I can just about remember every inch of Liberty City, but bugger all in Vice City; totally forgettable (although I'm not a hater - I loved the missions in VC).

After like 5 hours put in I know where my hood is and have a feel for that. It's going to take a long while though. That small section's like a dot on the map. Liberty City was very easy to remember imo. 3 seperated islands, each locked to start and opened up. You really grew to know that island after doing a lot of missions and stuff. Then the next one opens up. But VC was what, 2 times the size of that and SA 5 times VC? It will be a hell of a task for a person to know that. I'd like to think I knew VC very well in the end btw. I think one day I may know SA pretty well but never every square inch. There's an insane ammount of detailed areas out in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and include underwater forget it.

But the actual layout of San Andreas.. impressive. Very impressive.

yeah, climbing stuff is one of my favorite additions thus far. I know if I ever play VC again later I'll miss that a lot. It's a great way to escape cops on foot and find different areas and such.

fuck, 3 days of lifting weights and now I look like Adobo. How do I lose muscle?

You look like a Filipino dish? :lol

I guess you meant Abobo, from the Double Dragon series, right? I so, I've got to try that...should be funny.

Heh heh.. I was thinking that too. Mmmm.. adobo and rice.

On another note... I feel so much worse about killing people in this one, including my own character.

The first one was just kind of generic, so I didn't have any connection with any of the characters. VC took place in a different time with a color palette that made it seem kind of fake.

But SA has characters I'm already caring about and the time period is so recent that it seems real enough for me to feel bad about what I'm doing. I dunno. I feel bad now when I run people over, where in VC I'd do it just for fun because it didn't seem very real. I'd take way more risks with my character just to see what would happen, but I don't want anything bad to happen to CJ!
And I certainly felt bad killing the friggen NATIONAL GUARD :(

I'll get over it I'm sure ;P

Also, where the hell are the taxis to take you back to your previous mission if you are at the hospital?

I bet you'll lose muscle + gain fat if you eat lots of chicken or maybe som pizza!

Pretty much. Since you move around so much I'd say it's almost impossible to become an obese pimp unless you gorge yourself. A few trips to Cluckin Hell will solve your muscle problem.

Only a few more hours, only a few more hours, only a few more hours, only a few more hours, only a few more hours, only a few more hours.... Damnit, it's not working :(

Must have!!! I am SOOO glad I booked tommorow off work!!!

~Black Deatha

I just got the first message saying my character was hungry and needed to eat. Maxing out your muscle is too easy, my dude looks like a freak now. Does muscle ever atrophy, so I can become a fatty later on? Or can I be musclebound and a fatty?

How do you get inside the gym? Is there a certain mission that tells you you have to go to the gym? Also, same with clothes too. I'm stuck in my wife beaters and pants and I just got done beating that crack dealer and his thugs in that little house.

P.S. one of the best games ever!!!

The draw distance is still kind of bad. I mean, I was just exploring and went up into the woods and I must admit seeing the the mountains of hills from afar was awesome, but other than that the pop ups occur.

Hahah, the base jumping kicks ass. Im in love with this game though. As long as i dont run into any more game breaking bugs, its will be my GOTY so far too.

Forsete...where did you get the parachute from? Do you have to unlock a new area to get it? If not, then what part of the map?

Lots of other cool stuff. There are a ton of vehicle missions now. All the regulars from the other games plus the pimp mobile and burglary truck which rocks hard.

Where do you find the burglary truck after completing the mission where you use it? I know where the lockup is but I can't find the truck...

How is it? I've heard that it's not so good?

Widescreen? It's basically unplayable. The framerate is significantly worse. When I first started playing, I was using widescreen but I got to a mission I absolutely could not finish. It involved racing a motorcycle through traffic and the slowdown was making it nearly impossible. I switched over the standard and had zero problems.

Too bad.

There is one around the first gym, and they are all over the high traffic commercial and industrial areas of the city.

Hm, cool. I'll have to remember that once I get back to that part of the city. Right now,
I'm hiding up in the hills with Catalina

Speaking of which, Catalina is perhaps the greatest videogame character of all time.

The controls are still sluggish. The frame rate isn't that great. The world seems more barren than Vice City/GTA3. The draw distance is OK. Having said all that, while only playing two hours (HOW FREAKING BIG IS THIS MAP? Good god) I'm having much more fun than I ever did with Vice City. GTA3 was cool 'cause it was the first one. Besides the music and the setting, Vice City seemed to be bring nothing new to the table. San Andreas has much more to do, and while I mentioned I thought the world is more barren, what you do see is much more reactive. Don't mess around too long in neighboring gang hoods are they are gonna mow you down. And I don't know what it is, but there is something cool about taking a bike into a neighboring gang territory, raising havoc, and bailing out. Fun so far. Oh, and in the club, there was one gaming moment I never thought I would see in a game:

Doing a dancing mini game with parappa style controls to Snoop Dogg music. :lol

The talk radio for this game is amazingly funny. Been listening for hte past 20 minutes while I was on the PC. :lol This shit is funny. Way better then the GTA3 and VC ones.

You dont have to unlock it. Its at the top of a building in Downtown Los Santos.

Here is a map.

The marker is pointing over the building, you need to find that yellow cone thing (the one which means you can enter the building), it will take you to the top of the building.

Here is a guide on how to get into the Los Santos airport.

http://w1.480.telia.com/~u48019550/lsairport.jpg

1. Find the truck in picture one, you can find it by the docks. Park it by the airport fence.
2. Get a car and park it on the truck, though you can skip this if you want. I later found out its possible to jump the fence without the car, just stand on the tallest point of the truck and jump.
3. Jump towards the fence, CJ should grab on and jump over automatically.
4. Inside the Los Santos airport you can find the Lear Jet type of aircraft and a Dodo.
You CAN fly into the other two cities if you haven’t unlocked them, but the police will automatically start to chase you (you'll get a 4 star wanted level) and the air force will scramble fighters to shoot you out of the sky.

Cmdr Solrak snagged a copy and came over last night. Color me impressed.

This game is so above and beyond the previous 2 3-d installments, it's amazing. The missions are incredible, the atmosphere is incredible x2. I can feel the smog of LA air when driving around. I will say it was my first time witnessing a ps2 game in almost a year, so I was at first shocked at how bad the game appeared to look. Bumping it up to 16:9 widescreen improved things nicely. Graphics have never been this franchise's selling point. I like the new camera controls. Also like how everything in the game appears to have weight to it now.

I was not at all thrilled with Vice City after all the fluff wore out. It looks like SA is a keeper. I love all that status meters too. Yay for character progression! Yay for having control of your character's appearance.

I'm soo buying this when I get the chance.
