Official Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas topic

the game is still sooo flawed in sooo many key areas. much has been improved since the pretty terrible mechanics of gta3 and vice city, but its still not even passable in many areas. the entire single player game is broken. the missions are consistantly frustrating, stupid, and plain not fun. i dont enjoy trying to race to pick up crates with a forklift where interaction with the crates is shoddy at best. i still dont like having immense problems trying to target enemies while i'm gang banged from all sides. and on and on.

rockstar continues to have a great idea on their hands. the freedom, the environments, most of the ai interactions are awesome, its just that the only fun to be had with the title is in just fucking around....

seriously, how can anyone possibly consider this a 10, let alone GOTY material!? why do you gusy overlook how crappy/amaturish a lot of it is?

I dunno, I always thought the missions were utterly stupid and poorly designed. Anything that makes me play multiple times just to teach me how to do it exactly right is far from perfect in my mind, but I get the feeling that most people play this for the sense of freedom, not necessarily for the missions. That less-focused gameplay was something I could never understand.

I have an opinion about GTA too! But I'm gonna save it for an original topic to be posted later.

edit - my post no longer makes sense now that this has been merged...

no, it still is a great idea, and can be a hell of a lot of fun... but its no 10 or goty, not even close. i expect polish in a title that is procclaimed as either or both of those.

There's this thing called "fun". And that's what GTA is.

WHY CANT HALO 2 JUST GO UNOPPOSED DAMNT :(

Seriously, if anyone is making threads like this to try and deflect attention away from Halo 2... They're idiots. Like anything is going to harm the game's chance of selling. Short of MS, ya know, not actually putting a game in the case, but a nice, squashed piece of shit.

exactly. thats what keeps the game from being utter fucking trash. it can be fun, but strangly, almost none of that fun is garnished from the "game" itself (the mission?story line side)

It's ok ivy Halo 2 can still get GOTY... and hey look Zelda is still the #1 ranked game over at gamerankings.com, SA is only #2 so Halo still has a great shot!

Just because you fucking suck at the game doesn't make it a bad game. Douche.

Just because you can't fucking handle a differing opinion on the game doesn't mean he sucks at it. Douche.

I don't like Burnout 3 because I always crash! It feels amateurish to me!

Speaking of BO3, has anyone tried getting the Turismo in SA and heading down a highway head on into traffic? It feels just like BO3, completely with screen blurring and shaking.

please. i dont dislike games that are tough, just games that arent polished. do you think gta controls wonderfully? do you think there isnt anything that is outright broken in it?

I think it controls great... the framerate and draw distance are my beefs with it. I wouldn't have liked any of the previous games, or halo 1 for that matter if these issues meant that much to me.

I also wish they hadn't taken out dpad steering, but no big deal.

I don't notice anything that's broken in it. Maybe you should practice more and use the controls as intended before saying outright that it "sucks" and is "broken".

I think the aiming is still occasionally akward. I'll be honest with you though, I don't see the "broken" part of it yet. Not every part of it is perfect, but every part of it is manageable and most of it is stellar, IMO. If there was ever any game that deserved to be applauded for the whole even above the noteworthy parts, this is it. And I enjoy the missions and story as much as the fantastic sandbox elements in it. GOTY material? Frankly, I don't know how someone could play this and not be awed...taking all years into consideration.

I am currently getting territory, what stops it?

After the Green Sabre mission with Sweets the territory colors dissapear from your map. Still waiting for an answer on when/if they return.

Anyone far enough please answer?

Ivy, I don't see how you can't think that GTA will be the biggest contender for console GOTY (except for *maybe* Halo 2 which we'll see once its publicly released). This game has it all and aside from a few minor issues it handles them extremely well. I for one LOVE the missions (even the forklift one).

I wish the soundtrack had a little more variety though. It's pretty damn good but I liked the 80s one better IMO. Some of the San Andreas stations I never listen too which wasn't the case in Vice.

Gestault Of The Year

Honestly, if you're the kind of person that is easily frustrated with games, don't even bother with this one. If you thought the first two games were too hard or annoying, you'll hate this one. The game can seem kinda brutal at times but for as open ended as it seems, I think most missions do have a correct/easy solution. It's just a matter of figuring it out, and using it. It was the same way in the first two. You're going to have to replay missions a few times to get them right, but once you figure them out, they're generally a cinch.

Anyway, I'm doing Catalina's missions right now, and she's easily my favorite character. Everyone in this damn game is a total, remorseless sociopath, it's great. :D

San Fierro...

...Bloodring arena battles are fucking HARD. You get massive doses of cash from it but winning is a total crapshoot (largely depends on your driving level.)

And I just killed myself by waging war inside an auto showroom, throwing grenades at copcars from three floors up, when CJ got smacked by a hood from an exploding car and fell out of the building. GOTY

And to the bustas complaining about the "broken" (
rolleyes.gif
) driving, try getting your driving skills up and don't try to drive like you did in 3 and VC...cars have "realistic" handling now, meaning they don't auto-correct their steering when you oversteer into turns and such

I finally got access to the country and San Fierro. Dang this game is cool. I finished the blah blah (spoiler so edited) mission and I was left ... forget it spoiler tag time.

After green saber and after doing the camera thing I ended up having to find that (?) area. I was still on a bike and just tried to head straight for it (jumping over hills and such). Everytime I did a free fall I kinda felt like I was on a actual roller coaster (that funny feel you get on the bunny hops when you're weightless... I know it's just a game but I don't understand it either lol). Then after a while I did a huge one and saw nothing but water under me. I couldn't think nothing but "Oh crap!!!".

I got to the boat and saw that I didn't have a level 3 warning. So I went exploring.. I saw a speed boat and traded and just had a bit of fun in the water with it. I tried to beach the boat on some rocks I saw but I ended up sliding back in the water (jumped out of the boat in hope I would be able to keep walking up). I started swiming back to the water and noticed the waves... (it was also storming and lighting). Such a awesome game.

I LOVE that the fact that SA is so hard. (Not really THAT hard.) Vice was a fucking cake walk (still a great game)

Weird, I find this game to be far easier than VC was on PS2. Mostly because half the challenge is no longer fighting the stupid controls and a first person viewpoint that isn't as sensitive as a disgruntled Nintendo apologist. (Though replaying most of it on PC, I did find it to be pretty easy, that mouse-aim is like a cheat)

GTA:SA is polished goodness. Gawd this game is the shit.

I don't think the game is hard, really. I DO think that the game is made "artificially hard" by the sometimes crappy controls (mostly the auto aim) but I haven't been tempted to throw my controller yet. I've been breezing through a lot of the missions you guys are struggling with. I did have some missions that were a bitch though. The forklift one stands out because I had to keep Ryder's punkass alive. He'd get overwhelmed and killed if i just focused on boxes, but then I got smart and left the forklift to go clear shit out for him. Piece of cake.

Then the one where the russians are dealing guns to those other dudes and I had to infiltrate that one warehouse....that was repeated a few times but just because I made some stupid mistakes.....several times in a row. :) For the most part its been fairly challenging, but nothing I can't overcome with a few tries.

Siamesedreamer and I were talkin on the phone and he came up with a real good point. In GTA games, there's no consequences for mass-murdering cops, women, etc. There isn't even a penalty for dying or failing missions. I think the game would have more impact and be more meaningful if you actually died and had to start from your last save. As it is now, you just lose some money and your weapons. Big fuckin deal. Or if the cops bust you, you teleport to jail and its the same thing. Just think about how much more badass you'd be if you went on a killing spree for the game, knowing damn well that you might die for good if you fuck it up. I think that'd be better.

This was the first mission that gave me troubles as well. We kept alternating attempts, but it took quite a while to beat, mostly thanks to the ineptitude of Ryder. Then there was those times I accidenatlly ran him over with the forklift bringing back the final two boxes...

Me and my buds have discussed this quite a bit while playing the game ourselves. We once stormed through a rival gang neighborhood just racking up 'balla' kills, and it's a bit dissapointing respect doesn't alter for example. The world and the missions in this seires have always felt quite segregated, but it's improving.

Do people actually allow themselves to fail missions, or be wasted, or arrested? Personally, whenever one of the aforementioned things happens, I reload my last save. Why would you allow the game to take away your weapons and money? Shit, I save after every important thing I do.

it sucks when you have to maintain a girlfriend though, since saving advances like 6 game hours or something. So frequent saving just makes it more of a hassle.

I don't know, why can't YOU?

I refuse to admit that the lady I rescued from the fire is my girlfriend. I haven't visited her once, and I'm "saving myself", Mormon style, for the chicks in the other cities.

I don't know how anyone could find this game hard when the game liberally tosses around armor and health powerups in any mission that might be remotely challenging.

I'm amazed that after three games people still don't realize that L2/R2 cycle through targets. Especially when the game fucking spells it out for you.

armor helps not in the stupidly annoying Supply Lines. but other than that, so far the mission design is ace.

/me cycles through targets with impunity

Sure glad I was paying attention during the GUN TRAINING SESSION.

Man, I am so tired...3 days straight I've been up until 3-4 AM playing this game...so addictive.

On rare occassions where I have to do those shit cross country-oriented missions, (Wu Zi Mu, the one where you have to steal a tanker in the boonies, etc.) I just shrug off the cost of armor/weapons lost/time wasted and try again rather than trudge my ass through the too-large countryside and highways again

Even if you got the game on monday, as I did... that's insane... absolutely insane. I now feel more comfortable with myself for having played 15 hours, which I skipped classes and lost sleep to afford.

:D Yup, got it on Monday. Being an out of work writer has it's perks.

Nice way to make cash, if it hasn't been said already: Go to anywhere with off-track horse betting, bet on the horse with 10/1 or so odds bet everything you've got. If you win, good for you, if you lose, reset and try again. The easiest place to do this is Montgomery

So far my favourite mission objective was:

bulldozing a portapotty with a foreman inside into a ditch and burying him in cement

Going to play it a ton this weekend. Hope turf wars comes back at some point. It seems that Rockstar doesn't really embrace the "gang" mentality in their games. With GTA3 it was Fido getting fucked over by the mob and fucking over all the other gangs. With Vice City it was Vercetti starting his own pseudo-gang (though his army was useless), and with San Andreas they have
the gang betray you once again a la GTA3
. If there's no more turf wars in this game I'll be pretty upset. Definitely the most fun aspect of the game. I think it would work really well in an online environment in the future as well.

This game sets a new standard for level design in video games. Its just daunting to think of when you see how intricate the highway/roadways are, how varied the terrain is, just everything about the state of San Andreas--from Mount Chilliad to The Las Venturas its just an amazing achievement. And the place is friggin huge, Its taken me 10-15mins to travel to many areas during missions.. All of it amazingly with not a single load screen after the initial one.

R* has really out done themselves(and anyone else) this time. I dare not to think what they will be able to do with next-generation hardware.
