Official Gunstar Heroes Wii VC Release Thread

I was gonna consider you a brother, until you said dusty.

If you were hardcore, that piece of hardware that you have would've been connected to your stereo via the headphone jack, and would NEVER be dusty. You fail, son.

Sorry bro but some people didnt grow with a Sterio system in there room that they could hook up there game system to. Sorry but it was a RF adapter for many years for me. Not to mention untill I started working a job the only way for me to upgrade my systems was to trade them in. You hardcoreness is defined by your knowledge of the games not how it was hooked to another multimedia device.

Does VC Gunstar Heroes still have the bonus level that could be accessed during the Dice Rolling stage? It wasn't in the PS2 collection. It's prolly still a Genesis only exclusive...

*wicked snicker*

Anyone not play the game originally and now have a review after playing it on the VC?

I never played the original. I don't know how this one slipped by me. It took me a little under 2 hours to beat it on Easy. The bosses rule and it appears to have aged really well for a game from 1993.

I can't wait to play through it with a friend and work my way up to the harder levels.

Get it.

Giddy up!

Why's it so damn hard.

'cuz you ain't playin' it on an original Sega Genesis(tm) controller.

Lemme guess, this is prolly your first time playing it too. Didn't have any friends who had a Genny. So the closest you had to compare to was Contra on the SNES. Its ok, mang. I understand.

Just keep at it trooper. You'll pull through.

I'm waiting for the euro release (next week).

I have the GBA version which is GOD, probable the best or one of the top GBA games for me. Great gameplay, great graphics, gerat music, great Gunstar Future Heroes. Buy it too bitches!

BTW, Which is better: Gunstar Heroes or Gunstar Future Heroes?

I'm sick as shit, so no work for me... Here's a couple of quick pictures from the game.

I'm of the opinion that the original is a better game. The weapon mechanic was more interesting as well as some other fighting mechanics, the gba game didn't let you catch and throw bombs did it? Also the original had co-op.

Holy crap. I thought this was something exalted by the GAF Gaming Elite that couldn't live up to the hype. But it's freakin' amazing! It's so chaotic. I love it.

Love it, love it, love it!

And it looks so nice in progressive, too! I went and bought Ristar afterwards, 'cause the Sonic Mega Collection games don't look this nice and sharp.

Oh, yeah, and screw you, Curry and Rice. Landed on it, beat it with seven health, then got sent back to the start...only to land on it again and die. ;_;

man I forgot how great this game was.. but ugghhhhhhhhh.. I NEED a classic controller. Wiimote is too weird for Genesis games, and am I wrong thinking the GCN controller is the WORST ****ING CONTROLLER IN THE WORLD
for shooters?

aside from my controller problem, my god this game is perfect. Hell, on the Genesis it was perfect, at 480p we have just found the first game ever that is better that perfect.

Konami needs to put Contra Hard Corps on VC next. Not quite as polished as Gunstar, overall, but the pacing, visuals, and level/boss design are about equal. Plus, it has the awesome branching levels.

so, is this pretty playable on the wiimote for someone who hasn't played the genesis version? i don't have a classic controller yet as i have a gift certificate on amazon and am waiting on them to replenish their stock (who knows how long that will be).

i want something to pass the time before my component cables get here and i continue zelda.

Yes. Buttons feel a bit small when playing this game (if that makes sense), but otherwise it's very playable. Big A button switches between weapons, which works very well, and then 1 and 2 are shoot and jump respectively.

A bit later than expected, but here's a few:

GunstarGAF1.jpg

The simple Wii screen. While I'm here, how/is it possible to have all consoles in 1 Channel space or what?

GunstarGAF2.jpg

Setup of champions. Given, I'm used to playing co-op and having a certain somone making up the slack, but alas.

GunstarGAF3.jpg

Pretty explosion caused by one of the coolest moves around: Chuck toss!

GunstarGAF4.jpg

Booyah.

GunstarGAF5.jpg

Simple and clean.

GunstarGAF6.jpg

A few of the coolest boss around. Changed my weapons a bit to something more solo-friendly. Have I mentioned thus far that playing AND trying to stop at good photo-ops ain't easy?

GunstarGAF7.jpg

Woo. So easy with a homing setup.

GunstarGAF8.jpg

This (and the first, really) were taken by hand so they're a bit blurry, but I had to keep this one. 1 health, victoly!

Hope that hits the spot. Not the best most booming shots, but it's what I could do, alone, with what I had. =]

Do you guys set your TV to 4:3 mode or does it change automatically when you start the game. Mine stays stretched. I can change it though so it is no big deal.

My TV doesn't change automatically, since the Wii doesn't change either... no biggie, since I just tap the "Aspect" button on the remote.

Well, if I want to... I don't mind the way most 4:3 stuff looks stretched...

Yeah, it's lame, but you gotta set your set back to 4:3 mode for VC stuff if you prefer OAR, like I do. Then back to the Wii Menu, and back to 16:9. I wonder if this is patchable... Or even if Nintendo plans for PSP/360-like system updates, beyond simple channel additions.

How do I know what difficulty I'm playing on? Is the default normal, or easy? 'cuz I just mashed start until the game started.

I hope the default is normal, because I'm getting my ass handed to me pretty regularly now towards the end...

At first was thinking WTF - this is suppose to be one of the best Genesis games? But fell in love with it by the time I got to the second stage and fought seven force. Took about 10 tries to kill him.

How many stages is this btw? I'm on the 3rd stage of the first 4... hoping the 4th isn't the end of the game.

i think that's just the way it's going to be. they aren't going to start having the wii output in 853 x 480 (or whatever) so your tv isn't going to know which 640 x 480 picture is widescreen and which isn't.

the only 'option' they could add (and they better make it an option if they do) is to put the black bars into the picture so that when stretched it's the right aspect ratio. that wouldn't be too bad for NES, SNES, Turbografix and Genesis games, but for N64 games you'd lose detail compared to using the full screen and requiring the tv owner to manually change aspect.

There's a fifth and final stage which is the longest level in the game.

Default's normal. There's an easy, normal, hard, and extreme difficulty.

Which wouldn't work correctly, because all of those systems ran at different resolutions. Hell many games on those systems ran at different resolutions. I know both the SNES and Genesis had games that used coding tricks that used funky resolutions to achieve certain effects or gameplay elements.

Should I play it without using the seekin weapon? Its just so easy to let bullets fly and have 100% concentration on making sure nothing hits you.

Not possible for at least 3 of those 4, since NES, SNES and Genesis VC run in their native res. For example, most Genesis and now VC Genesis games run at 320x224. How can you add bars to 320x224 to make it look right on a 16:9 screen without scaling the game down / eliminating some of the original pixels? The game fills the entire screen already. There are no spare pixels for bars or whatever. You'd have to radically change how Genesis VC works (ie, convert its output to 480i, at least, and start scaling the image, ick) before you'd have any meaningful options to change the aspect ratio presentation. And even then they'd be crappy options that'd lead to significantly worse image authenticity / fidelity than it has already.

Glad you're liking the game! It's among my all-time favorites. To easily beat C&R, jump at it, pulling back just before you enter his attack range. If you do this correctly he'll go for a high attack. When you land use this opportunity to run in and either punch or throw him. Throws do the big damage, about 40 iirc.

Random tip: Jump attack (C, then C) the item carrier bees. You'll get multiple items out of 'em. Especially useful for the heart carriers.

Use whatever you like. There's a lot more to the game than the default difficulty. I used to use homing all the time, but as I grew more experienced I gravitated toward more powerful and specialized weapons. For a long time my favorite has been fire+laser, aka "the lightsaber." It looks shit but it can eat bullets. I'd also suggest free over fixed shot for 80% of situations. The game's only major flaw is that you can't toggle between free and fixed on the fly ala Contra III / Hard Corps.

I was playing yesterday, and the game was a bit harder than I remembered, what with bosses throwing out attacks that I'd never seen before. But then I realized that when I had it on the Genesis, I'd always put it on Easy and never even attempt the harder levels. I have no idea why that is...

So I put it on Normal, and I blow through that without much more effort than normal (Though Golden Silver did kill me once).

Should I play it without using the seekin weapon? Its just so easy to let bullets fly and have 100% concentration on making sure nothing hits you.

Depends on what difficulty you're playing on. When I had it and always played on easy, my weapon of choice was the seeker + laser. Hell, it was practically cheating, as it immediately seeked out and destroyed everything in sight. It wasn't quite as effective on Normal, but I'm finding seeker weapons to be pretty ineffective (With the possible exception of Force + Seeker) on any higher difficulty, as they just don't move fast enough to handle the greater number of enemies, and often get distracted by indestructible objects/objects that take way to much effort to destroy, letting the enemies overwhelm you.

I got my ass kicked on the second level once I got to one of those points where you have to destroy the soldiers on the train to progress, because that damned laser beam spent all its time homing in the enemies that kept coming in from the sides and never had a chance to nail the soldiers.

Chasers suck on hard and even on normal they arent as good as the other ones. The scmup stage is awesome btw and for that level i would recommend chasers on any difficulty simply because it is so hard to aim. Free shot is the best except on the mine cart level where it makes it very hard to kill the bosses whenever the level goes vertical

This will be my first VC purchase. Thanks GAF.

p.s.- Can you believe I've never played this?! =O

You aren't alone. I totally missed the bus on this one, and even as a game collector I've never bought/seen/played it despite all the glowing reviews it always got. Going to hook up my Wii right now and finally see what I missed.

I vaguely recall Fixed Shot being able to do something that Free Shot couldn't... Something about a jump kick or something? I'm completely blanking.

Also I remember that it's possible to block, but I don't remember how the hell to do it, and also I can't figure out how to do that slide move where they move forward in a crouching position instead of sliding on the ground (Presuming it's even a real move and not a glitched up regular slide)...

I think Fixed Shot has more angles you can shoot at than when using Free Shot. I'm not sure if there's any other difference. Edit: The characters look different and Fixed Shot doea have a jump kick (though Free Shot has a dive attack).

Assuming you're using the classic controller, A+B at the same time will have you block. Not sure about that "move forward in a crouching position" thing.

Nah, Fixed Shot still only fires in 8 directions (Though combine Force and Lightning, and you get a few extra angles in there). Figured everything else out though, pressing down and jump in midair as Fixed Shot performs a drop kick, and doing a half circle forward and pressing fire does the crouch slide thing, which near as I can figure is pretty much entirely useless in light of the fact that the slide is far easier to pull off...

Oh, yeah. But with Fixed Shot, you can stand and shoot downwards (in the 3 directions), while in Free Shot you have to jump to aim and shoot downwards.
