Official Katamari Tribute Thread of Forever

I was really looking forward to buying this today after work, but I read in another forum that the 2-player is very limited. Is there a 2-player option for the main story line like there was in We <3 Katamari?

nope. just a few select levels.

Eternal mode unlocks after you complete the request on Drive mode. The game even said it was a good way to get presents/cousins with no time limit, so I don't think you have to collect them all before it becomes available.
I'll buy this game if Eternal Mode isn't too hard to unlock. How difficult are these requests?

I just started playing, and oh yeah, Katamari is back with style.

I can't even belive just how fun it is to play Katamari, the feel good factor is through the roof!
The soundtrack is so damn good, I absolutely love the track at the King's Cosmos.

I haven't looked into co-op yet that much, but I pressume you can play some story missions with your friend?

Maybe the incoming signal causes it to light up. A lot of electronics (like old/cheap speakers) will produce noises when a 2G/EDGE signal comes in.

Or I'm completely off-base, who knows :lol
You might be right man.

I've had the Katamari sitting there next to my lady friend's phone, and it will light up randomly. But she's not getting any texts.
So it can't be vibration.

I'm obsessing over this. :D

And Eternal mode is on a stage-by-stage basis. The criteria seems to be earning at least 90 points in Drive Mode on that particular stage. It's not too hard. Even if I fail, I'm enjoying replaying each level.

wow, eternal mode for every stage in the game would be like the best thing ever.

Last weekend I was visiting a René Magritte museum in Brussels, when I came upon these artworks..

Also, slightly unrelated... but in fact Margritte was also behind the Ninja Turtles!

I've only played the original (which I liked), and I'll almost definitely get this, but are any of the other sequels recommendable?

WE <3 KATAMARI was just as enjoyable to me as the first. what little i played of BEAUTIFUL KATAMARI just felt like it had something missing.

There is a little hole in the balustrade where your Katamari fits through.

sooo

IGN gave it a 7.0

One new control mechanic in Katamari Forever is that you're able to jump up to get to higher ground. This would be nice were it not for the fact that you have to yank the controller upwards to make the Prince jump, and it's often unresponsive. It is, in fact, incredibly infuriating many times, and it's so unresponsive that you cannot count on it when you need it most. It's very nice that you can jump, but it really sucks that you have to rely on SixAxis input to do so.

Gameplay 7.0
It's still fun at its core, but the same problems that we've seen for years are still here. Also, while the new jump mechanic is welcome, it works terribly.

Nice way to show how little interest you put into the game you reviewed.
I mean come on, many people already knew in demo that you can jump with R2.

I think its suffering from the Dynasty warriors effect..

"this is Katamari a franchise that isn't big. Lets give it a low score and cite not enough change in the game as the reason why"

When the truth is: Katamari drive is enough change for me. ITS AWESOME!

you can? I've had the game a week now and I didn't know that. To their point, the sixaxis jump is damn near broken. I'm talking 20% success rate. I was even shaking the bejesus out of it with no response, so I just dropped the controller and it jumped when it hit the floor.

Well, the game could mention it better, but it's in the manual.
I just try every button in a game/demo *shrug*

When you are dedicating a whole paragraph in an official review to this (and it seemed to affect the rating), I would make sure it's actually true (and there were discussions about it basically since the Japanese demo arrived).

so did i. I specifically looked for a jump button because it sucked so bad. It didn't work when I tried it. Not an issue I suppose. I have 120 pts on most levels and I never used it even once.

I wont EVER let this thread die. NEVER

Are the Home Rewards in the European version? I cant seem to find them in my wardrobe...

It'll be a real shame if they make their way over here.

You don't shake the controller to hop.. you give it a flick of the wrist upwards.

Yes, the Sixaxis jumping is really badly implemented, but why complain when you don't have to do it that way?! I can't believe that they've actually played the whole game if they haven't once tried pressing R2 (and I'm also amazed that anyone can find it a good idea to review a game without reading the manual to learn the control scheme). Pathetic.

Agreed. Obvious errors like that is why gaming reviews are often not taken seriously. I'm not that surprised this is an IGN review... I've played the demo for less than 30 minutes and even I know R2 can be used to jump.

Yeah, I found you can jump within 5 minutes by seeing the controls on the loading screen on the demo.

Fuck. The one where you gotta make mars on Karamari Drive mode is fucking impossible.

Why does a popsicle reduce my temp so drastically, and there's SO MANY THINGS THAT KNOCK YOU AROUND SO MUCH

long time katamari fan. been playing Forever since last friday. my thoughts:

-is it just me, or is it a lot harder to please these whiny kings than in the previous games? i make a big ass katamari, pick up tons of shit that he needed me to in his request, and he tells me it's tiny and says never to bring that shit to him again. point is, although i find it innovative that you not only have to get big but also have to look out for particular item types, they should have made the point curve a little more forgiving. i can bust ass all night on a level and not get more than 26 points. and then the next level i don't really try and end up getting a 90-something and he's all impressed.

-LOVE the new items you can pick up that grab everything on screen, or make everything near you gravitate toward you. nice way to innovate a little without alienating the game too much.

-i like how when you get bigger a lot of the teeny tiny items are still visible and able to be picked up. the old games annoyed me sometimes when i was about to pick something up, but i grew right as i was rolling to it and it disappeared because it was below a size threshold.

-the mechanism that makes walls/etc. invisible when they are obstructing your view doesn't work very well. 9 times out of 10 when im right up against something and trying to turn so i can see my ball, it WON'T do the see-thru circle deal. and when it does, the circle is just big enough to see my ball, but not where im going. please patch.

-i lol at the jackasses reviewing the game that didn't realize R2 made you jump and not just sixaxis. seeing as jumping has never been a part of katamari, and it's something big enough to change the play of the game in a big way, i think it's actually a good thing that it's hard to pull off a successful jump onto something.

-is it just me or do all the levels give you way less time to get anything done than the previous games? it's not just a matter of 'boo hoo i didn't get enough time to win' gripe, but also a 'im afraid of beating this game too quickly' kind of thing too.

all in all im happy. $50 bucks. yay.

It seems that way. Even at 90 they're only moderately pleased. It motivates me to replay the level and do better.

I beat the game, but with all the extra modes and trophies I'm still playing. Katamari (especially this one) is a very replayable game.

Hows the music in this game? My favorite songs from the past games were "The Moon and The Prince" and "Baby Universe".

Are there any songs in this game that sticks out above the rest?

Question, about making the biggest Katamari possible
Is there something else in that last level I'm not seeing. I'm trying to make the 2mill KM katamari, but even after I roll up every single star in the cosmos on eternal mode, I can only get ~1.85 mill before I have to roll up the king.

You'll need to play through other levels and smash planets..make new ones and it will increase the amount of stuff you can get.

also remember to play all the co-op levels as that will add even more planets.

oh, I had no idea. That's pretty cool but I can't try co-op until I get that lonely trophy.

yeah you're right. it isn't like it's giving me a game over and sending me to the title screen. the red word bubbles make me want to create stardust and try again. i guess i just sometimes feel like im more worried about getting big enough and grabbing all the right stuff more so than just rolling and having fun? forever mode should cure this no?

good to know. my friend is in town for the weekend and wants to play. hopefully i can unlock more stuff so we aren't handing the controller back and forth too much.

question about forever mode: can i roll from paper clip size to rolling up entire continents? that was one thing i always wanted to do in the original game. go from teeny tiny to earth sized without any loading inbetween. please tell me they granted this wish!

Wow, my maximum score in a level is 88. Even if the game is easy, making 100 points in each level seems VERY hard. You have to plan each movement in previous walkthroughs to minimize the walking, i suppose.

Regarding the size of the Katamari, it depends on the level. There are a couple levels where you can roll big enough to roll up the continents (and then some...), but there are many where there just aren't enough large items to continue increasing the Katamari's size, no matter how long you roll.

When I was failing in some stages, I found that when the game tells you "Oh you're 50m, now you can move to that area" you'd better go! The next area has larger items in a higher quantity, allowing you to size up a lot quicker.

For the sake of collection, I was sticking around for too long trying to get every item in each area. That's what replays and eternal mode are for.

And getting 100 is almost like getting an "S" rating in other games. It's way above and beyond what the game had asked you. You won't get it the first time and probably not the second.

Fucking hell you guys. I gotta get this game. I LOVED the original. Never got around to playing We <3, and the Internet told me Beautiful was a bit uninspired. But my wife loves her some Katamari. With 30 levels, new modes and a jump button it sounds well worth it.

One question - Some folks seem to be digging the soundtrack. Does it really hold up to the original?

If you liked the orig. OST, you'll love it, it has a remixes of some of the original's songs, even 8-bit style ones!

Not to mention it sounds awesome in 5.1 or DTS or whatever it has.

I think that's an unfair question considering just how amazing the original soundtrack was. :) From what I've heard of Forever's though, it is top notch. It certainly helps that they have legit artists like YMCK doing remixes.

I need to get people to come over and play this game with me. I played co-op by myself by putting one controller on each of my thighs and controlling the thumb sticks with my palms, lol. I beat the first co-op stage easily, but failed the second one.

I don't get how you unlock different modes.

From my experience, I need to do a 120 score to unlock the following mode for that scenario. Getting all cousins and presents doesn't seem to unlock anything.

Its doing 120 in Forever which unlocks Eternal, a 120 in Eternal unlocking Classic. There's no more modes, are there?

Could be 100 rather than 120, but I only get <30 or a 120.

how is this for a complete katamari noob? I have a Japanese copy of the first PS2 game somewhere that'll work on my JPN PS3, but a PSN version would be more convenient.

wait what

I've unlocked and eternal level with roboking after getting 93 pts on a level .
besides , I've also unlocked a couple of eternal / classic with 100 points , you don't have to necessarily get 120 .

nah , unless I missed something , you can't do this in this game .
you could do it in beautiful katamari though , and maybe even in me and my katamari .
