Official Lock's Quest Thread of Construction Combat

Yeah, I don't know that the stylized opening visuals work all that well, as-is, in-game, but it's still a shame to go from those to the portrait are we did get.

I don't listen to IGN's awful podcasts. I'm content to wait out the inevitable summaries. Also, I'm not too interested in multiplayer gaming, so a more fleshed out mode, while nice, certainly isn't on my list of priority improvements for any potential sequel.

Relax, I mentioned it twice unprompted. Once in a very general sense, and once specifically about Emi. Anything else was simply part of an ongoing discussion about the game's art style in general or a response to another's post, which is what threads like these are all about.

And this thread really needs more discussion to keep it from getting buried into obscurity.

But, to stress, the opening cinematic (hopefully there are more like these sprinkled throughout?) and the in-game visuals are fantastic. In particular, the sprites are extremely well animated and clean looking. Really impressive stuff. Some of the early backgrounds are a bit sparse and, color-wise, a bit washed out, but I'm starting to think that this was largely intentional in order to make the character sprites and the largely static offensive/defensive structures pop out better. If so, it's ultimately a good choice, from a gameplay perspective.

Yep yep. I've played a bit further and it's certainly getting challenging. But it seems, so far, like a meticulously crafted but relatively fair of level of difficulty, not the cheap brand of difficulty that largely relies on the development of exploits (or sheer luck) to overcome! I'm pretty happy so far, and getting happier the more I play! :)

are there additional mechanics added, different methods of attacking or varied QTE's at all?

I'm still not very far, but you can eventually gain special abilities and super powers, 4 of each IIRC. Unleashing at least some of them involves pretty nifty QTE sequences. So ratcheting to speed up repairs is not the only implementation.

Just skimming through the manual a bit introduces you to at least some of these new abilities, and they look pretty awesome.

Edit - Some of these special abilities and super powers are offensive in nature, others defensive. Their are vampiric abilities (heal according to damage dished out), mass hurt abilities, mass repair abilities, etc.

seriously though, i didnt mean to be a dick, but it just seemed to me that you were harping on something that really isnt worth harping on so i quick-posted a response.

I don't think I have ever even cracked open a DS manual. I have yet to play a DS game that lacked an extended (and often laborious) tutorial.

I am looking forward to the plethora of towers and helpers that seem to unlock gradually, as indicated by the selection screens.

when I checked online there wasn't a copy in a gamestop for 100 miles. Crazy. I figured this would be a title I had to order online, and I stumbled across one at best buy.

Ahh, I always read the manuals, even though I mostly don't need to.
There looks to be a decent spread of structures, turrets, traps, and helpers. And at least some of those will multiply x4 when you consider that there are 4 types of materials that can be used in construction: Wood, stone, metal, and spiked metal, IIRC.

Yeah, I'd be annoyed too, then. Good luck with the hunt! :)

I checked online yesterday too and it said that. Walked to the gamestop down the street and they had a bunch.

Yeah, I'm checking online right now, and it says none available within 100 miles, and I'm in downtown Manhattan.

I don't believe that for a second. That store searcher thing has been completely unreliable since they redid it some time ago.

thats where I am too. went to the gamestop at the seaport.

Give it until next week for all the stores to get the game in, Viva DS is also having the same trouble shipping, but should be just fine after that!

This game totally rocks.

My only complaints are:

1) No animation for the cannons and stuff.

2) Giant portrait taking up half the top screen for no apparent reason.

3) Dudes who don't get out of your way and block you from repairing stuff

4) Slightly repetitive combat

It's hella addicting.

How far are you?

Good to hear that the quiet death this thread is experiencing might be mitigated somewhat once the shipping issues get ironed out. The VP DS thread is utterly dead too.

Pier 17's Seaport Mall? I went there Tuesday afternoon and picked up both Viva Pinana DS and Lock's Quest. *high five*

Started playing this last night when I went to bed, and 2 hours later I was still awake, so I'm dragging ass today.

Great little game, and addicting as hell. Though I do start to get a little bored by the last 2 or so waves of each battle and think they should have shaved at least one off.

All in all, probably my favorite DS game thus far and the first to really make me embrace and like touch controls.

Also, played my first siege battle last night. Was fun as hell and a nice change up.

I have nothing overtly negative to say about it so far.

-I actually like the character portraits to a degree.
-The building is easy and fun
-Good variation on enemies
-Lock's combat should be tedious, but I'm enjoying the sequence taps for critical hits.

I'm only like 7 or 8 "days" into the game so I have a lot more to go through. How many "days" are there in this game? I think I heard 60 from someone?

Not sure if that's actually what it's called, but it's when you get to man a turret.

I'm only on day 12 I think, but that sounds awesome. Do you mow down waves or something?

Yeah it switches to a side view map and they start coming at you and you can buy upgrades and specials or even hire 3 types of soldiers to help you out on the ground.

There's 100 days, 20 maps and a whole bunch of different objectives.

Holy @#&% at the plot twist.

Reminds me of
Baten Kaitos

I also found an easter egg. Look at the left of the shop screen for Siege mode.

Lol which one? There's so many... :lol :lol

Ah, well I'm up to the part where Lock finds out that his village was created by Agony. I'm guessing he's clockwork too, but who knows, maybe he's Agony's son or something. "Lock...I am your FATHER!"

Hehe... well... you'll see soon enough :D

Does anyone here think this isn't worth a full-price purchase? It's beginning to look pretty tempting. I might bite.

You are one tough nut to crack my friend. lol -- I suppose I'm biased but you can read other's thoughts! :)

Reviews from major places haven't dropped yet (besides IGN's), but here's some minor sites that reviewed it or talked about their play experience so far.

Tech-Gaming.com: Rating: A-
Overall, Lock's Quest in a wonderful addition to the DS library, and stands as the best example of a RTS for the system.

Play Lock's Quest and Become Twelve Years Old Again

This is a game that is obviously well-designed, and was so obviously made by people who really cared about the quality of the final product. There aren't many games at all, from anywhere, that you can say that about.

Common Sense Media Rating: 9/10 (4/5 stars)
LOCK'S QUEST is a sheer joy to play.

http://www.*******.com/2008/09/12/wrup-rupw-i-palindrome-i-edition/

While not exploring the city, this weekend I plan on spending some free time at the beach playing Lock's Quest, which came out of nowhere and is a terrifically original take on gameplay I haven't seen since Atari classic Rampart with a cute anime twist.
Also demo of the game is coming out on Wii DS D/L channel on Monday the 22nd of Sept. It will be up for 2 weeks. It may come back up later, sometime, but I have no idea if it will.

The demo is the first map (tutorial, cut scenes, build/battle) - which is 6 days (minus the cool awesome cut scene intro since its too big and some other stuff)

But seriously... do you really have to wait that long?

The hell? Not worth a full price purchase? What would give you that idea?

It's easily among the top 10 DS games released. And is pretty damn unique, and addicting to boot.

Okay, fine, jerks. Just ordered from amazon.ca alongside One Piece 2nd Voyage. Though it might be a bit before I get it since they don't have it in stock at the present time. No rush.

I am having so much fun with this game right now.

So addicting.
So fun.
So unique.
So perfect for the DS.

I'm having such a blast with handhelds right now. I think I may be saying goodbye to consoles soon.

I should really pay more attention to what games are coming out for the DS, I had no idea about this game or drawn to life even though both look right up my alley and I haven't touched my DS in over a year.

Time to play some catch up now that my 360 finally kicked the bucket. :p

Not a bad time to jump back into DS gaming. There's a metric shit-ton of great content already out, and this holiday season is looking pretty stacked. Dragon Quest IV this week!

I'm reading impressions here and everywhere. I'm still not completely sold about the combat system (I was hoping for a more RTSesque design) but there's no game under 8.0 on the DS that i haven't played, so this one might very well be in my hands very soon

keep posting, just consider this a commercial break :P

I'm on day 23 now I think. After you
save the nomad village but then the clockwork come back so now you have to protect two source wells on opposite sides of the map.

should be a fun time

What did you think of the story? Our team worked real hard on trying to make a good story without going into crazy depth, since the gameplay is more arcadey and not hardcore, we wanted a story that would match that.

Tobias
was the last person I thought of
when it came to him being Agony
:lol I was like 'Noooooooooooooo!'. I got attached to him and Lock. I thought it was
the guy archineer, or the king (was there 2?)
. I was so looking forward to
Tobias uncovering something devious about them too, never trusted them at all :lol
.

You guys killed me with the
clockworks
twists there buddy. First
Emi, then the town, then Tobias, then Lock:D
.

I liked how I got to
challenge and woop each character in the game who I never expected to go against
too. Great job. Hope this breaks even, or overshoots expectations, cause I need a sequel NAAO!:D
