Official Mario Party 8 Thread of EXCITE

on an SD TV the visuals are very pretty actually. I wonder if IGN didnt review this game on an HDTV too. It has to be played on SDTV to look as good as I saw it. And trust me it does.

I don't doubt you, but its still something Nintendo should do better at correcting. I shouldn't have to use a freakin SD TV to get the most out of my Wii games. Especially since other games on the system run and look much better.

This is the greatest Mario Party since the 1st one hands down! I've never had so much fun playing a party game in my life. Purchase +1000
Sounds like a review that was posted on EB Games(no offense but you need more details on why it is the best etc.)

I owned the original Mario Party on n64 and played it to death. It was just that good.

Rented Mario Party 2, and hated the board designs, and the minigames did not live up to the original. Didn't play Mario Party again until a friend bought Mario Party 5? I think it was for the GC. Board design was still crap, but at least the minigames weren't horribly bad.

May pick this one up, depends on what the board designs are like. Mini-games are variable, not really worth making a judgement on, but if the boards suck, the game becomes downright unplayable.

Just played the city themed board. Cool board where you pay coins into Koopa hotels and the person with the most coins in it gets a star. if there are 20 coins in a hotel, the person who owns it gets 2 stars, and if there are 50 coins, the owner gets 3 stars. If you put more coins in than the owner, you're the new owner. Actual strategy involved...do you steal hotels from others, or try to build up your own? Spread the wealth, or protect one above all else? The minigames were fun, though nothing revolutionary. I see why it's getting the reviews it is. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but I'm having fun.

how would you define a sucky board? I thought the boards were pretty fun myself. They are quite huge in comparison to MP7s boards and there are plenty of pitfalls, bowser spaces, transports, mystery squares, etc. I played for hours with friends and the boards never felt boring in any way.

I define it by how creative/inventive the board mechanics are. I like the description of the city themed board with the hotels. The more strategy invovled in the actual game board, the more I enjoy it, since anyone can figure out the minigames. Boards with uninteresting or tedious mechanics are equally useless to me.

That sounds a bit like some elements from the first Mario Party (the Peach's Cake level) and a more recent one (with windmills?)

I've found all the Mario Party games to be rather fun -- then again, I always play with groups of people. All the series is great with 4 people playing... and it's horrible with one.

Mario Party 2 is still the best in the series...

One thing I loved in MP2 that I haven't seen (at least in pics) is the characters changing appearence based on the board (Pirate Land had them dressed up as pirates, Western Land as cowboys, etc.).

I thought this would have been fun with other people, but after actually playing it with 3 other people, it still isnt that much fun. The minigames were better when they were waggle-less.

i had a blast with this last night, there were 3 of us and one computer player. most of the minigames are waggle, some have you holding it like an NES pad. I would say the ratio was about 70:30. I liked the waggle in the game, but I could see how others wouldn't like it at all.

Bought it yesterday. Played through the single player mode, which was enjoyable enough.

Later, had three 18 year old girls come over to play multiplayer. One of them already has a Wii, one has played a lot at a friend's dorm, and the third was a Wii virgin. All had moderate to great amounts of playtime with previous iterations of Mario Party.

The verdict?

Screw Wii Sports, this is the game if you want to see nubile bodies bouncing around. The girls were shouting, screaming and even moaning. Plus the girls found endless amusement in making the characters taunt by making jacking off gestures with the remote.

Thank you, Mario, for inviting this dirty old man to yet another wonderful party!

pshhhh its all about online baby. Who needs females amirite?

Bah. It feels like I'm being drawn and quartered by you guys. I've got a sealed copy sitting next to me until I decide what to do with it. I bought it without checking any reviews first so I"m pretty glad I hadn't opened it yet. My wife hates games due to the complexity but this one should be pretty easy to pick up and play, right? Also If I delve into the single play without her, is there a way to counteract that advantage? Some type of handicapping option to even out the odds a bit?

You can handicap by giving the weaker players stars to start the game ahead. My boyfriend doesn't play games at all, and he made me give him a one star handicap. End of game results....I won. By 27 coins. We were tied otherwise.:D The minigames were easy for him to grasp, particularly the waggle ones; the only one he didn't get was the punching one. Mario Party is great to play with a sig other, plus, you'll probably still win, even with the handicap.:D

I picked it up yesterday and played a game of 15 turns and another 10 turn team game. I personally really liked it. This game doesn't seem like a huge step up from the previous Mario Party's but I've always enjoyed them. The mini games are fun and I was happy to see the didn't give games that don't need waggle, waggle like Super Monkey Ball. A lot of the games just used the wiimote turned on it's side. For the most part if you didn't like past Mario Party's you probably wont enjoy this one, if you liked the past games, you will probably like this one.

One thing I wanted to ask to the people who complain about the bonus stars being cheap and unfair is why don't you just turn them off?

edit: I like how the general tone of the thread changed on the second page (100 ppp).
enjoying games > trolling games confirmed.
:D

Pretty good party game
We played 10 rounds before we ran out of time and my guests had to go,
But damn.. WTF is with the borders in Widescreen.. seriously!

In multiplayer I've never had to use the nunchuck at all... It has some minigames that use it, but thats not the part of the main game.

I'm gonna have a few people over tonight and play this for the first time. Is there anything I should unlock beforehand?

The only important unlockables are Blooper, Hammer bro and the Bowser board. There are a few cool stand alone minigames to unlock though, like a waggly moped race against 30 assorted mario characters, like thwomp and the bandit thingie that steals baby mario.

I like the hotel board, my wife kicked my ass on it, it is a nice change of pace. Fun times.

So, I played it tonight for the first time with a few friends. We picked Goomba's Pirate board. Ugh, what a bad, boring board. There's basically only one straight path, and you get a star every time you get to the end of it. No star location changing, no having to have a certain amount of coins to get the star, no multiple paths, barely any special board events. I'm used to those things from the last MP I played (4?). I'm hoping the rest of the boards aren't like this. The mini-games were decent fun, but I just wish the time spent on the board had been more engaging.

:lol No shit there are vastly different boards compared to that one. Some of them are damn good (DKs, the train, etc.). You guys picked the beginner level, that's all.

I thought I'd wasted my money at first with this game. Then, I found the monopoly board and suddenly all was well.

Some of the minigames make pretty crappy use of the waggle but oh well. Should've bought Warioware, I suppose.

Now that you've all had the game for a while....

How fun is it? More fun than 6/7? Are the motion controls as poorly implemented as some reviews claimed? Is it a blast with a group of friends?

I'm considering getting it, it won't be a problem to get 3-4 people playing.

Oh, and can I play with only two remotes?

It is a lot of fun. Absolute blast with friends - you don't even need to be drunk to be enjoy yourself. :p You should definitely get it if you can regularly get more than 2 people together - by far the best Party game on the Wii, and the best Mario Party game I've played.

You need 4 remotes for 4 players though.

So, what's the best way to get Carnival Cards to buy all the crap from the shop? Test for the Best gives like 30-40 cards a time but you're replaying the same 10 games over and over. Playing a party game gives the amount of turns x 2 but that takes ages to finish. Star Battle Tent gives 200 but that usually takes a lot of retries on a few specific boards.
