Official Metal Gear Solid 4 Gameplay Demonstration YES YES ALL OVER MY OCTOCAM

Hmmm, I disagree...in terms of technical + art I find this about as impressive as KZ....it just comes together

Im impressed by neither of those.
KZ2 has a lot going on, MGS4 has great animation. But then, KZ2 lacks quality animation and MGS3 lacks texture-resolution and the hair looks awful.
But i dont recall any MGS-game to have been visual awsome, so im more looking forward to the needed gameplay-improvements. The new suit sure is awsome, i want more of that.

Honestly AI seemed fairly crap.

But since MGS is fantasy stealth/interactive b movie genre it really depends on what you like.

Don't be a moron. This was clearly a demonstration aimed at new gameplay features. Metal Gear's AI is relentless on the higher difficulties.

The AI is not a problem. This has been quoted many a time before. When any MGS game AI is cranked up the gameplay changes radically.

The demo would not have been fun to watch 20 soldiers relentlessly hunting snake for 10 minutes because the guy "screwed up".

The AI is there. Set MGS2 on "Hard mode" and play it again. You'll see.

this is just based on the video dude. Dont group think me.

dont be a moron i am basing my thoughts on the video. Nothing in that video is splooge worthyIMO

edit: what bait? what really impressed you about the video?

Looks like it plays a lot more like Splinter Cell mixed with a little Gears of War this time around. As a long time fan of the series I can say that it is about time. This will make me buy a PS3.

You guys think the untextured gun models in FPS view and the fire are placeholder? I really hope so. I'm sure the animation system is set in stone but I'm hoping things like this see improvements. It would really help with the immersion.

Good to see the haters out in full form.

Kojima has shown awesome new gameplay elements, amazing shooting mechanics, a unique and original morphing camouflage system, new hand to hand combat elements, new ways to interact and move around the environment, a dynamic warzone that changes based on what side you want to support, beautiful graphics with full screen anti-alaising... and on and on and on and on ....

Sorry, I guess I flew off the handle a bit. But, still, a standard should be set. People that bicker irrationally about A VIDEO GAME generally shouldn't be bothered with. When people find some stupid sense to retaliate, it shits threads up pretty quickly.

I didn't play The Getaway, but Gears is a much slower paced game so you can't really compare them.

I'm talking specifically about picking up weapons. It's not a slow process.

There's merit to what you are saying but ultimately the decision to cut "realism" versus "fantasy fun" lines is completely and utterly subjective.

MGS with clones and giant robots is not even asking you to take it overly seriously with the technology aspects... They ask you to just to enjoy the ride.

Besides... In fact, those bald space marines show super human endurance. Shouldn't they have to sleep and poop for ultimate realism too?

You're missing the point entirely. Sorry for not being clear enough.

The core issue is gameplay, not realism. The second issue is creating a cohesive world. The world doesn't have to be real, it could be completely fantasy-like. It just has to be consistent.

The rest of this world Kojima has created has gotten to a point where some things that he was able to get away with in previous titles don't jive with the current world he has created. More importantly, there are some great gameplay implications if Snake has to pick up weapons. He can't simply run and shoot at baddies and then run over their guns to pick them up. Another situation is where he is holding a player hostage and the player drops his weapon in front of himself. So while Snake is pointing the gun at him with one hand, he could pick up the gun with the other, giving the baddie an opportunity to attack you while you do that. It would make the gameplay interesting, don't you think?

There's so much polish in this game in other areas, I don't see why people would be averse to this idea. I mean, when Snake runs over bodies on the ground, it slows him down as he tries not to trip over their bodies. Sure, it slows down the "fast" gameplay, but it makes the world even more immersive. Such a thing did not exist in MGS...but Kojima added it over the iterations. Again, I don't see why people would be averse to what I'm suggesting. And again, I'm not asking for a complete overhaul...I'm not asking for the sound fx for your inventory to be taken out, or for the inventory management to be taken out itself because it's unrealistic. I'm just asking for the same sort of polish Kojima is known for, to be applied to something that could affect gameplay in a positive manner, with the picking up of weapons. And again, I don't care whether it is in the final game or not, I'm just saying it sticks out like a sore thumb, as everything else is an another level in terms of immersiveness.

no but its for the best. mgs uses the actually gun model so everything meshes

That first person gun texture is really awful-- in both cases. Leads me to believe the first person thing is fairly new, they just haven't gotten to it, or they don't care and don't expect any discerning fans to play in first person.

That and inside the dumpster bin. Other than that I was very happy graphically.

That's fine you aren't impressed. However, you have to acknowledge there appears to be a very large contingent of people who like the game and you are in the minority by far on this forum. You are in the minority overall for hardcore gamers as well when you consider the popularity of MGS series.

That being said there was no reason for someone to call you a moron and no real reason for you to turn a blind eye to the fact that this is an impressive game.

"Save Camo Pattern"

Looks like you can change suit completely too. In the TGS06 demo he had a coverall like the dudes fighting the PMCs.

Upon seen the video for like the 15th time I just realized there are indeed no "floating boxes" representing weapons and items. I know it was known to be like this since the beginning, but still...

Okay, watching the HD feed. Snake's model is amazing. It's so detailed.

This vid is very beautiful. The encode is better than anything on PSN.

LOL the soldier is trembling while Snake feels him up. Also, Snake picks his gun up off the ground...the gun model is just on the ground. No box.

I'm sure they'll add a marker, making them easier to see.

The game is quite a ways away, so, have some faith that everything will be taken care of, by the time it's released. Kojima is a pretty thorough guy. His games are a fine example of that.

And some really ****ing nice crumbling buildings attacked by flying mechanical birds, vehicles and bodies that react to the explosions, really nice ricochets and moves by Snake (that prone/turn/shoot gif needs to be shown again), and then wait till the Gekkous jump into the scene! And the real-time weather!

We've seen nothing yet, and it's already awesome.

The series of explosions was just way cool too.

that looked amazing.

Can anyone make a Gif when Snake does a body check? Thats funny the way it seems he grabs him in the crotch and the enemy falls down.

i mean the gun you see snake holding in the 3rd person has the same level of detail for first person. normally in fps' the gun model is not representative of what other players would see on your character model.

I think the weapons will be shiny or something... we haven't seen how other items are acquired yet. Maybe they'll be floating and rotating like always :)

what actually has impressed you? Kojima used this chance to Demonstrate how hte game should be played IMO it just came off as unimpressive due to the reasons i have previously stated. Please explain to me what exactly is splooge worthy in this video?

I can admit it looks competant as a new entry in the Fantasy-stealth genre but what is with all the amazing hype behind this video?

I think the game just looks downright fun. And I think there are areas that look good (the smoke, the explosions, the blur effect, some of the animations.) Mainly, I just think the game looks very FUN and a lot more functional than previous iterations. Having said that, the game is not a graphical showpiece, particularly when stacked up against games like Uncharted. I will get trolled hard for saying this but the Middle Eastern sections of Splinter Cell: Double Agent on 360 actually look very comparable, graphically, to this.

Just watch the HD vid. Great visauls. The scope of the battlefield was incredible. Awesome close combat moments. Great animations, though some were a bit stiff.

Some of the things that distracted me.....Demo AI was weak sauce. I understand that this video was intended to show new gameplay mechanics, but I sure hope there's some sort of expert difficulty. I want the AI to be nothing short of ruthless.

Snake's magic pockets was also a bit distracting. RPG ammo in those little pouches?:lol I'll let that slide since the game has break dancing Cyber ninjas fighting vampiers.:D

Complaints aside, MGS4 is still the sole reason I'll own a PS3 next year.

That's just nutty.

Guerrilla has yet to really prove themselves.

Factor 5, a technically accomplished dev...but eh.

Naughty Dog, also great programmers and nice games, but really never touched MGS.

Gears, not really that much of a showcase for AI, gameplay works well on the 30 seconds of gameplay technique, since you simply shoot everything that practically moves and doesn't even give you such varied of approach to situations like MGS. It's much faster pace for strictly gunplay for Gears. If that's the case of seeing responsive enemy reaction then play MGS3 above normal without much camo.

I actually did understand your original point and perhaps I wasn't clear in my reply.

This MGS game allows you to carry an unrealistically large amount of weaponry. Cardboard boxes large enough to hide in. Now a large metal DRUM which obviously cannot be carried in inventory.

It's pretty clear Kojima just said "screw the pickup animations" because no matter WHAT he chose to do it would look funny picking up a DRUM or a large cardboard BOX and making it go "POOF" into the inventory.

So Kojima probably just drew a line in the sand and said "Realism has to take a hit somwhere.... I choose this line right here."

Again, there is nothing wrong with what you are asking for. If I were a developer and you were Kojima I would ask you "Mr. Kojima how do I animate the barrels and boxes being picked up? Does he shrink them like Pokemon into a tiny ball?"

Fair enough, no?

People don't like it because while it would add somewhat to the immersive factor it would also take away from it being fun. If everytime you needed to pick up something Snake had to reach down thats time in which you could be running away from enemies, and considering how much goes on in this MG that's going to happening alot. You've got to draw a line between what might help some immersion and what might take away from the game being as a fun as it could. Would it add to the immersion to have Snake carry all the weapons he can use on him? Yep. Would it take away from the fun? Yep as you'd limit the arsenal the player can have. So you don't do it.

I wanted to make a post like this but I fear the backlash. I'll just say QFT and bail.

I'm more excited for this MGS than the last few though, cause there's more options for the controls and the camo stuff isn't as annoying. But graphically I don't get the posts here people are yelling "OMG BEST VISUALS EVER", this game isn't very impressive graphically.

so what happened to the destructability of the environments? last time it was mentioned they said it'd been dialled back a bit but now it's gone entirely. there was that pre-scripted bit where a whole building collapsed but you could see tons of mortars/grenades impacting directly on the militia building where Snake got pinned down by the tank and absolutely nothing apart from scorch marks.
