Official New Super Mario Bros. Release Date Confirmed

They don't need to have the word "new" in the title to make the casuals know that it's a new game. They can just let them know in the commercial without having the need to call it such a lame name.

I can see why they are not putting a number after the title. Super Mario Bros 4 is obviously taken by Super Mario World, and since Yoshi's Island is called Super Mario World 2, it could definitely cause some confusion.

:lol

I know several people who are convinced that it IS a remake of the original, even with the title.

Well, there's a reason they're called casuals. :P

But seriously, they could just clarify in the commercial, so even the most clueless among the rabble will understand it's a new game.

I'll be in LA for the E3 when this hits :D Where is a good place to pick it up?

Yeah, this is the 5th 2D platformer EAD has made with Mario, numbering this game would be confusing.

Let's hope and pray it stays as "New Super Mario Bros" because if it doesn't, you know NOA will fuck it up and then everyone will say "they should have just left it alone".

Even if they stated that it's new in commercials and advertising, it wouldn't match the effect of calling it new right in the title of the game, on the box. Not all of the casuals would nessecarily see the commercial, so from an advertising standpoint, its much more efficent to put it in the title. That be said, I'm not too hot on the title, but i honestly like it better than Sunshine, and it beats just calling it SMB DS.

do you know wat the other 4 are? just so i know what to expect. thanks

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario 2
Super Mario 3
Super Mario World/4 (in Japan)

:)

And really, it's silly to think they HAVE to have "new" in the title. By that rationale, Zelda: TP should also be New Zelda otherwise it might confuse people into thinking it's another port of LttP or something.

This really brings us to perhaps the more important question: What's up for Fall?

From IGN:

"The game will be released a few days before the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Expect some New Super Mario Bros. representation at the show, but since E3 is a forward-looking venue the game most likely will not be given much focus in favor of much more prominent future Nintendo DS product."

They must be talking about the DSL, right? No other game could be more prominent, excepting maybe Zelda. Does this mean the DSL won't launch with New Mario? (assuming Craig knows either way)

They aren't talking about DSL it implies a game.

Except Zelda doesn't have a history of numbered ports, or different numbered titles in different territories.

Well, who cares what they call it in Europe or Japan :P.

You're misreading. He's not making a thinly-veiled reference to some unknown DS game, he's saying that the most prominent games at the E3 booth will be the unreleased ones.

This makes sense, to an extent. More than likely they are speaking of the DSL, and it will be a nice cornerstone for the fall, but there doesn't seem to be any software to go with it. But, how much excitement can the DS Lite really bring amongst the gaming press when it will have been out for two months in Japan? They have to have something to go with it.

...or that. Yeah. That makes more sense. Dratted mentally placed "a" being where it doesn't belong.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. And 'prominent' as in prominently displayed, not more prominent in the minds of gamers.

For the ad for this, they should just do a new version of the infamous Mario 3 commercial from back in the day. Just the people chanting "Mario! Mario! Mario!" until the slow pull back to the giant mario face.

That would get attention, and also light up all us nostalgia freaks

I cannot wait for this game. OOOOOOOOOOOH.

What's your favorite Final Fantasy game? Mine is Final Fantasy II.

What console is that game on?

FFVI (FFIII over in the U.S.), I suppose. And it's for the SNES. Why do ye ask?

Well, they're not exactly casuals. Just didn't research the game. c_c

I said FF2, not FF3.

The point is that having different numbering schemes in different regions messes everything up. FF2 can be an NES game or an SNES game.

Well, I don't really care if they number it at all. I was just trying to say that they should change the current title to pretty much anything.

i LOVE the name "new super mario bros".
that is a very nintendo thing to do.

reminds me of the whole "super nintendo" and "gameboy advance" etc... kind of titles.

Actually, it's about time they graduated from the wimpy old 'Super' title. They should find a new, crazy ass mushroom that makes them the Crazy Ass Mario Bros.

The problem also is a lot of kids now with the DS wouldn't understand the numbering Super Mario Bros. 4 or 5 since some of them weren't even born when Super Mario Bros. 3 or even Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island came out.

They may not understand that this is a new game and not a remake/port of an older Mario game.

this is going to be great, i can't wait. I also can't wait for the inevitable hater thread telling us all how "they killed the franchise"

The sad part is ive seen so much marketing for Twilight Princess, there damn well better be a shit load of money they throw this game to get it out there. Right now no one other then hardcore ds owners know a new mario game is EVEN COMING. And its only a few months away..

I best be seeing some fkin display cases and standees at work soon or ill hate you NOA.

I believe Drinky will probably do those honors without ever even playing it.

I think the name New Super Mario Bros. works. Going with something like Super Mario Bros. 4/5/6/whatever is a mess because not even in this thread can we all agree how to count Super Mario Bros. 2, the other Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Sunshine into things. Naming it something like Super Mario Universe would set it apart as something different and lesser, as Super Mario Land was. I also feel it's a Silly Thing to give such a major game very different names worldwide.

New Super Mario Bros. keeps the important part of the title, while also dropping baggage and differentiating. Nintendo 2006 and the people working on New Super Mario Bros. are certainly very different from their 1985-1990 counterparts. A fresh numbering start is only appropriate. It weirds me out when old series return after a long hiatus with an extra number tacked on. See: Outrun 2, Pac-Man 2.

That's probably a good thing. I'm sure there are tons of people out there who'd (oddly enough) rather buy a remake of SMB than a new game...and they're probably a lot of the same ones who wouldn't check before buying, or just ask a clerk who'll tell them what they want to hear to make the sale.

And actually, who knows? That would be a cool bonus and not too terribly hard to do.

As long as it's not another "Clean is better than dirty and dirty's neater than clean!"

If this game is great I hope they start milking the shit out of mario platformers. I literally can't get enough of mario. Currently playing SMB1 Nes classic and Mario vs Donkey kong and loving them both.

i wonder what they'll call the sequel...

New Super Mario Bros 2?

Newer Super Mario Bros?

I wonder what they'll call a remake 9 years from now on a new handheld. New Super Mario Classic?
I wonder what we'll call this one when the next super mario bros games comes out. "Do you mean new super mario bros or the new one?" "Yes, the old one. - On the nes? - no, the new one on the ds, the old one."

I don't have a link, but I remember reading that many people of the original SMB team are responsible for NSMB ?!
