On the replay, it looked like the ball *maaay* have crossed initially.
At any rate, the forward progress rule isn't "you stop a guy and he's down." It's there for at least a couple of reasons:
1) To allow an offensive player credit for forward progress gained if he's stood up and pushed back 12 yards.
2) To protect the offensive player.
It also tends to apply to plays where a defender has the offensive player wrapped up and controlled... Otherwise, you wouldn't have plays where a ball carrier is pushed back a few yards and then breaks free for yardage.
It would've been the wrong call to overturn it.
Of course I realize that, but it's really drastic how he changes after the half, though. Either they're not spelling him enough or the rest at the half is making him feel the crunch. I remember in HS, the big guys would stay active a bit so the downward slope didn't catch up with them.Tamanon said:

Seattle @ Green Bay - I get the feeling Seattle will be talked up as the sleeper surprise from the NFC, and then Green Bay will dominate them. basically, another case of the ESPN hype jinx.
Jacksonville @ New England - the master plan: the jags will keep the game close, the pats will be trying to put the game away late in the 4th with a lead and the ball... and they injure Brady but lose in the process. or they hurt some of their offensive line.
New York @ Dallas - I really want to pick the Giants. I mean, really want to pick them, but I get this feeling Dallas will squeak by on a win that can only be called lucky.
San Diego @ Indianapolis - Probably going to be the better matchup, IMO, though I expect Bob Sanders to kill at least 3 Chargers by halftime.

I'd like to see the Giants beat the Cowboys, and then get totally crushed by Green Bay in the NFC Championship. But I think the Cowboys'll win (and hopefully get totally crushed by Green Bay in the NFC Championship).
I would be absolutely stunned if the Seahawks could hold the Packers offense to 13 points. At this point it doesn't look like the weather will help, right now the forecast is a balmy 25 degrees.
The Seahawks will need to put a bunch of points on the board and get +3/4 turnovers (easily possible) to win the game.
The Packers are averaging almost 28 ppg, and at home in the playoffs in nice weather? I don't see them scoring fewer than 28.

Jaguars have proven that they cannot play an entire game with their last two matchups versus the Steelers, something that is a must when playing the Patriots. David Garrard is not capable of running a one-dimensional offense because the Patriots will shut down the running game.
New York @ Dallas Tony Romo's vacationing instead of practicing will come back to bite him in the ass. He had no business taking any time off after the shitastic game he had versus Seattle.

You know full well I am the absolute most rabid Giants fan on here, and I am the absolute most rabid Giants fan I have ever met. I would love nothing more than to say that the Giants will stomp the 'Boys, but there are some mitigating factors:woodchuck said:
1) Will TO play, and play well?
2) Terry Glenn is back
3) Sam Madison hurt and may not be back
4) Shaun O'Hara hurt and may not be back
5) Tank Johnson will be more of a factor than he was last time we played
6) No Shockey to own Roy Williams again and again
I think the Giants keep it close but lose by less than a TD. The Cowboys just have too much talent on both sides of the ball.
Which brings me to my next question, how can the Cowboys afford all that much talent? There are a lot of players that should be getting payed a fuckton on that team.
BTW, all ESPN pundits, and all Fox guys picked the Bucs to squash the Giants.
I honestly don't know who will be more effective. Tom Brady versus Jacksonville's secondary or Freddy T and Mojo against the Pats suspect run defense. It'll be a better game than people think.

Ben more or less shredded you guys in the 2nd half when spreading you out. If it's not windy don't be suprised to see no huddle the majority of the game. That's what Brady does best and that will slow down and tire out your big line. If you guys can cause some turnovers and control the clock you have a shot or a big special teams play. BTW NE has given up less rushing yard then Jax this year and less rushing TD's.

Since your team is basically a carbon copy of the Steelers, New England will play you the exact same way. Spread offense and shutting down the run on defense, making Garrard beat them. I'm not so sure that Garrard can win a game without the help of a running game, the Steelers proved that on Saturday.

The Patriots don't make many mistakes, so the Jaguars are going to have to actually beat them without the help of turn overs and special teams.
Basically, the Patriots are going to go into the game with the same game plan the Steelers had in the 4th quarter of the wildcard playoff game.

In the games that have been close they've given up 90 (Giants...who had to abandon the run early in the 3rd ), 90 (Jets), 166 (Ravens), 55 (Eagles...who were content letting Feeley throw for 350) and 119 (Colts). The opposite is true of the Jaguars, who played a lot more close games (thus making a rushing attack a viable option for opponents).
It's telling that the Patriots have the fifth highest yards per carry against yet have the fewest rushing attempts against. In other words, the best Pats run defense is its offense.
When teams attempted to do what the Jags will, namely play ball control like the Colts and Ravens, the Patriots run defense got torched.
After Saturday I am no longer confident the Jaguars will win, but they have a good shot if they can pound it.

The one thing that gives me confidence about our D on Sunday is Steve Spagnuolo. The first two games we did not fair well at all on D. The first game, the D was just brand new and got abused, for game 2, our pressure was ineffective against that mammoth OL for the Boys. I am hopeful that our boy will come up with something. Absolutely the best coach signing of the off-season on any team:

I will cheer for Ryan Grant, that was my boy before the trade. I can't believe our depth chart was five deep at RB and that Bradshaw turned out so good.
