Official Phantasy Star Zero Thread (JP)

Okay, here's some general information about the game that I've gathered. I apologize if some of it was already posted.

-No Section IDs.
(SNIP)

Sounds ridiculously awesome. Except that Section ID thing, which would have been fun, and the trade only at NPCs, which is a bit of a hassle IMHO. But oh well.

Well as the drops appear differently in each person's screen, I have a feeling they will still be randomising it based on the character's name like PSO, just not telling you how ;)

That would be very interesting as time goes on if so, some people you play with could be a HUGE assett, and you can't fiddle the system until you get the 'best' Section ID for your class. We'd only learn/explain it over time.

The learning/discovering how the game works things was one of PSO's strongest assets.

-Currently only basic-type Techs have been spotted. For example, Foie, Barta, Zonde, etc. To use Rafoie you simply charge the Foie spell.

Ah, nice. Can you confirm who can use techs and who can't? As in, do HU and RA characters have access to at least some tech usage like in PSO (god I hope so), and do Casts and Caseals not have any access to techs (god I hope so)?

-Monsters don't actually drop items anymore. Once you clear a room a chest appears which has all your pooled drops. When you break the chest all the items pop out but everyone gets different ones, so on my screen there might be 2 Meseta's, a Monomate and a Sword, but on someone else's screen there could be 2 Swords, a gun and 2 Meseta. Crates work the same way, when you break it a different item spawns on everyone's screen. No more lootwhoring and worrying about people stealing drops.

Sounds like a very nice change. This way, people won't be running to grab an item when they should be fighting.

thx for the impressions ppl sounds awesome, just as expected...

You know, I never had this problem before (besides red items). all the people I would play with would generally ignore everything but the rares, but if those dropped...It became a mad scramble to get it.

UPS made of more fail:

I'm going to raise hell tomorrow morning with them.

Just buy a cheapish access point. Far less hassle with drivers and your OS acting up.

I suppose I should have listened to you. I bought one, and running 64 Vista it just refuses to recognize it. Every time I install it I get the same error message after it looks for an internet connection - please insert the Wifi USB connector. This is so fucking frustrating, I just want to play a bit with my students.

SHINY! Yes, it's a foil cover!

Well the photo doesn't quite capture it but!

Fuck this game is really good! PSO fans will sure dig this! SEGA, well done, you dont even need a server to play pso, superb implementation. Picto Chat is awesome with friends.

D: D: I never got any of the trading cards.
I think it's a pre-order bonus, but I received it anyways because there were more cards then pre-orders. I also bought it in Japan. The trading card I received is of Sasari and the password to unlock the free wallpaper on the site is 5247 - 3115. Input it here http://phantasystar.sega.jp/pszero/download.php then press the next arrow to receive the wallpaper.

Additionally, the password above can be used to recieve a special guest item from the Sewer Vending Machine. This particular one is called Valiant from a manga known as Blazer Drive.

Here are the others:

Selvaria Spear from Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) 4137 5476
Valiant Mysticker from Blazer Drive (manga) 5247 3115
Seena KanonÂ’s Blade Cannon from Shining Wind (PS2) 3489 9723
Hatsune MikuÂ’s leek from Hatsune Miku -Project Diva- (PSP) 8331 7716

Additionally, you can input those on the website to get wallpapers too; however, they are of all the same image, I think.

I'm at level 5. Just beat the first stage. Nearly died against the boss! Is it me or is the targeting system not as good as in PSO? I just might not be used to it yet.

Edit: You can see the cards here http://**********.com/?p=61236

Also, there was a launch party for the game today in various places all over Tokyo. I just found out today. I wish I'd gone in case they were giving away a promotional item.

Edit 2: Ok I'm at Level 9 now. Played for about two hours - one hour online and the other offline. I've played through two stages so far and I have to say, these levels are about the equivalent of say Forest 1 or Cave 1 but that's it. In PSO there would be three levels for the forest or four levels for the caves but in PSZero these first two (of seven) areas only have one level. I hope the other areas are a lot longer; elsewise, this would be a pretty short game which I can't really see myself playing for as long as PSO Episode 1.

Important!

How is the music in the game? Great like the Forest, Mines, and Seabed levels of PSO or boring, sleep inducing BS like Phantasy Star Universe? Does the music switch when you're not fighting enemies? I'm more interested in how the game sounds because the graphics and art don't look too hot (I guess it looks good by DS standards though).

um its not officially out in JPN until today, should get first day sales tomorrow. no word on na release-game just released give it time.

Updated with 2 more codes! Cmon gaf! My first thoughts are pretty pleasant so far. Went with a Hunewarl like my PSO days. The combat system is so far just like PSO in that the the attack chain is timed again. If you mash, you won't get a 2nd or 3rd hit. The first boss was pretty cool, it was this giant octopus. I had some trouble against it, infact I died twice. But that was probably because I was playing around with a wand instead of using the saber I had.

Where is the place to enter the codes (for the weapons, not friend codes) within the game?

As far as opinions, I like playing Phantasy Star Portable more than this for a few reasons right now...

-No fast weapon switching
-No lock-on
-Stupid AI that doesn't heal themselves when fighting a boss until they have 10 HP left, leaving me to solo it (i.e. die trying)
-Bosses that hit like a truck unless you grind or use a shield as a weapon or something... maybe not being able to read the kanji is screwing me here. i'm all for dungeon crawling and loot-whoring but spending 30 minutes getting to a boss that i have no business fighting (mostly the AI being stupid and not healing and me being underleveled) is obnoxious after multiple deaths

Otherwise, it's pretty fun. Lots of fun new weapon types and techs and a lot more user-friendly than PSU. Gonna have to put more time into it before I can decide whether or not I like it more than PSP though.

Yeah. I miss weapon switching. Closest thing we have is R+Start I think. Lock on is slightly there. You have to be close to the enemy and holding R constantly. And not sure about the AI there, can't you command them to heal themselves or something? Bosses are pretty brutal so far though. I heard the final boss here is one of the hardest the PSO series has seen yet.

Oh man. Took down the Dragon @ lvl 8. Was going with Claymore for awhile there until Sarisa and Kai died. Then duked it out classic style with a handgun. It was soo intense :D

Not sure if you can tell them to heal... I'll play around with it later. I'll have to try R+Start also.

I haven't had problems with the story bosses so far, only when you go back for a quest/field grind. So at least that's a plus. Hopefully later on you don't end up having to solo them... unless you want to!

Kai was with you? Man that guy ditched me like half way through:lol . Sarisa died at the battle too.

How do I find out what my friend code is?

Edit: ah it's in the OP. Thanks.

Zurra you can, someone posted a list of commands you can tell the NPCs to do.

NPC battle commands
* "Free order" tells an NPC to freely go into battle.
* "Attack shift" tells an NPC to go into an offensive mode.
* "Shooter sight" tells an NPC to use long-ranged attacks.
* "Heal order" tells an NPC to focus on healing.
* "Follow order" tells an NPC to stick close to the party leader.
* "PB release" tells an NPC to use their photon blast.
* "PB chain" tells an NPC to chain their photon blast with the leader's.

These are found in the chat shortcuts on the bottom screen, lower option.

Hold L (when the target on monster shows up) to lock on

Here's my friend code:

Wi-Fi name: Celsius
Friend Code: 1419 0798 0293
Character name: Canary (Humarl)

I've added everyone in the OP thus far (xfactor, Kiyogi, and Gamergeorge), so please add me too! Hope we can get a game in about 10 hours or so.

Currently @ the Rioh snowfields now. The first ever snow field (not lobby) in the PSO series! Well that wasn't the point of my post here actually. I'm really impressed with the art direction they got going here. Especially the attention to detail. Although there's no footprints left in the snow, there is powder coming from your feet as you run about. There's also a light snow coming down. But the really neat thing is when you look at the backgrounds beyond the models. It may look flat, but they really put a lot of detail in it. It ends up painting a nice landscape to view. You can see shooting stars, or waterfalls slightly animated along with the rotating skyline if you pay enough attention. They definitely weren't slacking off in this regard.

thanks for the heads up about the shortcuts, kiryogi. that should make things quite a bit easier. i agree about the environments, that snowfield is lovely and the desert/canyon was really nice as well. they put a lot of love into this one.

xfactor, i noticed that actually. i always end up strafing when i don't want to, but it's not too bad and since it also guards when you're using a shield, it has its uses. something to get used to. i think i've gotten way too familiar with PSU/PSP's lock-on is all.

Currently at level 45, one thing that I dont really like about the game is there is no terrain height difference unlike PSO. But, this is still the closest thing to PSO yet.

I agree completely. Even the subtle little elevation differences in the original Episode I did a lot to make environments feel more organic.

Also, double sabers no longer hit multiple targets. That's a bit annoying.

Another thing is that as far as I can tell, there's no quick and easy way to tell rares from normal items once you've picked them up. Well, you can go to the shop and see which ones fetch 10 Meseta, but I'd like to be able to tell when I'm at my locker.

Oh but the worst thing is .. you can't change the map direction! ARGHHH! This frustrates me to no end. In PSO I'm used to be able to clear whole rooms while only looking at the map, but without being able to choose map direction, it's not possible. I guess the dynamic map would take too much processing power. Same probably goes for terrain elevation.

Anyway, it's a game I'll be playing a LOT. I hope they build on it and make a Wii version or something. As good as PSZ is, it keeps making me think of possible improvements.

There's always the star rating + what affinities the equipment has.

The star rating isn't very useful for telling rares from non-rares as far as I can tell. There are shitty, low-ranking rares that I want to keep but that have less stars than some normal items.

Those that are sold for 10 are usually rares.

Wow, no PSZ import love at all. Well here's a little something interesting from the Christmas Party event Sega had. Seems like PSZ was going to be PSO on DS...

Please tell me the forest area from PSO is an unlockable area or something PD0!

It's not. Simply put, PSZ in it's preproduction phase started off looking like that.
