Official Phil Harrison Keynote @ GDC Thread.

When is the March firmware update? Does anyone know?

I will guess either the same day or the day after the PAL launch.
(Though if they were smart they would do it a few days before so the servers do not get sacked)

Does anyone know where I can watch the Sony GDC Press Conference?

I tried the Gamespot link posted earlier but that appears to have ended with just a box saying 'Watch out for the rerun!' in it's place.

I tried Gamevideos but they don't appear to have the full thing. JUst some individual videos, which is still good but I really want the whole thing.

I'm not sure where else I could try. Would keeping an eye on BitTorrent perhaps throw up some results?

full version is on the way at gv. As I mentioned in other threads, the full Home demo is here

http://gamevideos.com/video/id/9861

and full LittleBigPlanet demos here

Euro launch date I believe.

If that's there.....Can you say best of both worlds :D

I honestly envy euro in many ways right now.
They didnt have to go through the birthing pains as much, have a hell of a line up at launch as well as online content, and come in on an upswing.

I'm still stunned by the whole thing. For a platform holder to actually take this step and make a mmo world the main community interface. Intriguing to the nth degree.

I wouldnt be surprised if Sony had an under 16 server that parents can lock their kids onto

"Infinitely more exciting than anything on other consoles." ...so says the narrator during the Home Video...

...but Hyperbole aside, the PSHome looks really sweet! (I don't own and can't afford a PS3 till MGS4 comes out at the earliest; need a HDTV too... :( )

Come this Holiday Season, I really hope I have the funds to afford the leap into HD, PS3, MGS4, Heavenly Sword and Little Big Planet (if it's a BD game).

would make sense.

I don't know the game, so pardon the question, but how does Second Life handle this? Anyone know?

The thing I find most interesting about this - outside the technological, gaming, and community aspects - is the political side of it when it comes to Sony as a whole.

Most - if not all - of this is obviously a SCEE affair, and I think it shows full well that the Japanese arm of Sony is in a world of trouble in knowing what actually needs to be done to advance the software end of the Playstation brand beyond pumping up hardware every generation.

Now, I only bring this up because if I'm not mistaken the general XMB firmware is done in Japan, and I'm worried this could pose problems for getting Home neatly integrated into any kind of universal friends list that happens through the XMB. I'm hoping Phil stays on top of that and doesn't take any crap from the Japanese office concerning this integration, because he needs to force their hand since apparently anyone doing anything worth a damn when it comes to innovating or improving the Playstation in the software arena obviously doesn't live on an island east of China.

Or they could just make it to where parents decide if their kids get to go out in the virtual world.

This is really exciting for me. Most of my friends work odd hours and this would be a great way to meet up and chill shoot the shit before we decide what game to play that night. Hell we could even have a movie night :)

I think you may just be jumping the gun their. It's just SCEE has really matured and is basically the darling of the Sony crown at the moment. I don't doubt for a seond that Sony Japan has alot of stuff to show at both this supposed Gamer's Day in April, but certainly at E3 in July.

I heard ages ago that SCEE was the one that was going to be getting all the investment and growth this gen with various aquistions and expansions. I think under Harriosn they've really grown.

1) Why does SCEE keep getting ****ed when it's obvious they're the creative force in the company now (with some exceptions, Team ICO, etc.)

2) OMG

DS - Game 2.0

PSP - Game 3.0

:lol

bitter much?

If you understand what their definition of Game 2.0 and Game 3.0 is, and understand the plans for PSP ... there is nothing bitter about the statement at all.

This isn't a 'gaming ghetto' sort of comment at all.

Sony Keynote - GDC 2007

51MIN

I have been pretty hash on the home concept, altought Little Big is imo, what next gen online user created content is all about (we will see some that with forza 2).
But maybe if i check the keynote maybe the concept will be presented in a way that changes my opinion.

Anyway, the keynote is up on gamespot.
I just got through watching it and it all makes even more sense when you have phil explain it...

SL is split into sims (basically square areas of land simulated by one server each), sims can be either adult in nature or not. But enforcement doesn't really matter that much, as SL is adult (18+) only.

Again, it's free and it's optional. How the heck can you complain? Do you even own a PS3?

No. But is that supposed to even mean something? Shouldn't your question be "Are you even planning on buying a Ps3" ?

Its about online planning, this doesn't appeal to me, myspace on a console doesn't appeal to me. But i gotta say, watching this actually in motion is kinda cool...

Huh
"This is a significant step forward in the area of user community services and emergent entertainment experiences," said Izumi Kawanishi, Corporate Executive and CTO Software, SCEI. "While the 3D graphics demonstrate the power of PS3 and the PLAYSTATION Network, the most impressive feature in Home is the variety of ways in which multiple consumers, as well as our third-party partners, can experience the next generation of communication by interacting and sharing among each other. I feel strongly that this unique blend of community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce will expand the future of computer entertainment."

Ok so home is teh shit. Its nothing like Myspace as i would have been led to believe with all the Avatar creation and shit, the whole areas in Home, the possibilitys are great. You wanna se trailers, info off games, hell who knows maybe one day they will have some sort of connectivity between home studio areas and trade shows, where the areas will be like the booths from e3 and you will be able to download demos and shit.

Yeah this is pretty cool. I bite my tongue, eat some crow and bang my head against the wall, i was way out of base.

All i gotta say...shiiit, MS better have something for E3 :lol They were caught napping like they say in Football manager.

I have a completely off-topic question, but I came up with it while watching the keynote so maybe someone knows.

None of my videos on my PS3 - all of which have been downloaded from the store - have video thumbnails, just a black and white "film" icon. However, all of the videos on the PS3 Phil was using for the demonstration had video thumbnails. Do I have to turn on an option somewhere on the machine to get those or is this not available in the current firmware?

I don't know about that. Sony's Japanese labs are the ones that did the face mapping software and that crazy OS that used the tiles. They've done some crazy shit before. I think JP is where they do all the low-level stuff. I think that's where all their media players and shit gets coded. PEACE.

Yes, While playing any video bring up the menu and look for the thumbnail option. It takes 15 seconds of footage from where ever you choose to make it.

Isn't that in the .thm file? I know there are two files WinAVI spits out to my PSP when it encodes files. One is the video file, and the other is a .thm file. I thought the thumbnail came from that, but I could be mistaken. I haven't put a video on there since the first day I got it. :? PEACE.
