I just beat the first 3 "levels" and this game is really good. I especially like the art and character design. So good.
Stripper13 said:So I bought this game last week and as of today, I think I'm ready to return it.
To set the tone of my post - I'd just like to say that I think the game is brilliant. It is every bit an open-world platformer as you could hope it could be.
The graphics and art-style are amazing. The transition from fertile lands to unhealed lands is always awe-inspiring and really adds a sense of purpose to the game. The animations are beautiful... so good however, that when the animations get shoddy - they are VERY noticeable. Jumping to/from slide platforms, and wall-running to grip-fall in particular always feel very clunky and really impact the flow for me. That being said, it's hard to hold this against the game when every thing feels so 'flow-y' and smooth - and the animations between the Prince and Elika are fantastic.
The battle system is a fresh twist, though ultimately it begins to feel tiresome in the mid/late game... and I found myself speeding to the next spawn to kill it before the enemy appears. It's hard to pinpoint what it is about the battle system that led to my not liking it. Certainly the combo's were satisfying and had at least a little depth - however repetitive it was. I think it became tiresome when the 'edge' system become such a huge factor. Being pushed to the edge of the stage results in either a repetitive cutscene of either the Prince/Enemy swapping position - a shitty QTE event to prevent potential death or a quick attack that will leave you/enemy injured.
At the beginning of the game it is difficult to fault anything. The platforming elements feel so good and smooth, and the battle system is simple yet satisfying... however all of this quickly wears thin as your progress through the game. After you learn the A/X/B/Y moves - and how to use them for Vines/Rings/Double-Jump etc.... that's it. That is all you will be using throughout the game. The first time you ring-run underneath and around a building you will be impressed... on the 20th time you do it - it will feel same-old... on the 50th - you'll be wondering why the rings don't at least LOOK a little different if only for a touch of variety.
The magic abilities you use Light Seeds to earn are a total crapfest. They completely ruin any sense of over-the-top 'realism' the game offers by allowing to the Prince and Elika to simply float through the air in one of four equally shitty looking ways. When I chose the 'Red' magic - I thought it was cool to see myself bouncing from wall to wall... when I chose the 'Blue' magic - and seen myself bouncing from wall to wall - it become apparent this was not what I had in mind when I had the 'option' to choose what ability and how to progress through the world.
Speaking of the world - it feels wonderful. The feeling of isolation and scope gives such a "Shadow of the Colossus" vibe that it adds another 2 points onto whatever review score I would give if I had to give one. The environments are wonderful - and each new area feels fresh and offers some great scenery... though the rings/grooves/poles/vines etc will all be identical. However, moving from one area to the next (especially for long travels) is a complete bore towards the end of the game... particularly when you have taken all of the lightseeds you can get to at the time. The real issue with this though, is the temple. Making your way from 'Area A' through 'Area B, C and D' so you can get to the temple to earn another shitty power + a small cutscene/battle is only made more boring by an unforgiveable 'wasteland' stretch of area between the caves and temple staircase. I cannot understand why this area was made so vast - at all.
The dialogue is pretty good. I enjoyed the Prince's sense of humour and the 'flirty' behaviour between the two. I particularly enjoyed the 'Don't Look at my Ass' scene. The one liners are clever but get a little tiresome. The cutscenes can fall apart when the dialogue starts getting the slightest bit emotional... it often feels forced and ruins the 'fun' feeling the two share.
Other than that - the only gripe I had was the difficulty of the game. As I said earlier - once you learn the basic A/X/B/Y controls and what elements they relate to - there is nothing extra. The difficulty is the same 1 hour into the game as it is 10 hours into the game. The battles get increasingly difficult - but ultimately it feels highly artificial. Instead of offering more challenging back and forth enemies... the enemies simply reflect your sword attacks more often and even more tiresome - go into a state whereby you can only hurt/begin-a-combo with either a Sword/Magic or Grab attack. It turns combat into a chore... and outside of the occasional QTE close-call and boss that requires an 'edge' related death - it is exactly the same battle with a different skin attached to the enemy.
As much as I bitched though - I loved the game. It feels epic, the music is great, the interactions between the two are wonderful, the battle is at least - stylised, and the platforming/exploration feels perfect albeit repetitive. Frankly, it is the exact same issue as I had with Assassins Creed. Everything about the game felt perfect - yet there was simply too much content with respect to how much variety the gameplay offered... the difference is however - that I didn't mind paying full-price for AC (and after a month or so break 2/3rds through the game, I finished it with all flags)... with PoP - I will be taking advantage of the 7-day satisfaction guarantee that EB Games offers.... I will buy the game once it hits bargain bin prices.

Hmm.Stripper13 said:I realise this, and I'm with Dreamwriter on this - the teleport function is only a truly useful option once you have cleared all of the lightseeds in a few areas (which will be late in the game, as many lightseeds require one of the four magic abilities) - as teleporting between nodes would essentially mean missing or bypassing varying numbers of lightseeds. Furthermore, the teleport function ruins the sprawling atmosphere the game tries so hard to create.
All of that is besides the point though - you are FORCED to traverse the wasteland at least once (a few times? not sure) - and I cannot see how any Game Designer could let such a horrid design flaw in the game... what point is such a huge, barren piece of land when the rest of the world has so much content and scenery... and more importantly, when the Prince runs so damn slow.
Rez>You said:Hmm.
Look, I don't mean to say you're blowing things out of proportion, but...Stripper13 said:That 'sprawling atmosphere' is tied to the large areas with an incredible amount of detail, scenery, fidelity etc... the wasteland is garbage... there is literally nothing worth looking at in it... and frankly, even if it was intended to give a sense of scale - give the player the ability to run through it a bit faster (Okami/DMC4 - increasing running speed anybody?)
Rez>You said:Look, I don't mean to say you're blowing things out of proportion, but...
...I can't think of a way to finish this sentence.
I'm just messing around man, no offense meant. I'm indifferent.Stripper13 said:I'm not blowing it out of proportion at all. I stated in my original post that I think the game was brilliant despite the flaws, which implies that they are minor at most... I also acknowledged that you CAN teleport and avoid the wasteland area (though you are forced through it at least once). The only reason that I'm still even posting about it, is because it seems like such a large design flaw.
Assassin's Creed at least had some sights to see, some things to do, flags to collect AND the ability to traverse the land very quickly (in the event that you did not want to teleport). It just seems that as a developer, why not either make the wasteland a bit smaller OR allow the ability to move faster through it OR add some scenery/story-elements/lightseeds to keep it interesting for at least the first few times you traverse it.

Attempting it in the Royal Garden versus the Concubine. Been attempting for an hour now.Kard8p3 said:That's the 14 hit combo right? It's not that hard (though it's best to do it early in the game.)
Actually it was also pretty easy on the last fight of the game. Just make sure to keep trying to start your combo and be good at deflecting, eventually they'll let you through. Also be sure to position yourself a little bit between the center and the edge. Don't forget to save so you can load it back if you don't make it.Kard8p3 said:That's the 14 hit combo right? vareon said:I wonder how the sequel, if this game ever gets any, continued the storyline. They could go with a different prince (or even a different universe), of course, but I already loved the current Prince as a character.
bigmakstudios said:Just finished Prince of Persia. What an ending. A few annoying bits in the game though.
Some of the writing is horrid. "Good job somebody's protecting you" is repeated far too many times. What the hell does it even mean? Shouldn't it be "good thing somebody's protecting you"? Also, with wall running an automatic maneuver, it could result in a lot of slip-ups that wouldn't happen otherwise. You could jump toward a platform, but automatically cling to an adjacent wall, and slide off. On other occasions, I pressed A repeatedly to expedite the Prince's movement across ivy, but the inputs queued, so the Prince started to wallrun, then jumped off the wall several seconds after the last time I had pressed A. This sort of stuff is really frustrating, and it makes me wonder how anyone could say that this game is too easy. The controls definitely take some getting used to, and I honestly think I would have given up on the game if not for the convenient checkpoint system.
Despite all that though, it's an incredible experience. In the end, the story actually turned out fairly intriguing. The ending could be interpreted in a few different ways imo, although it seems like people in the official thread disagree. Personally...
*Prince of Persia spoilers*
Also, the graphics are amazing. This is one of the most visually arresting games I've ever seen.I thought it was befitting of the Prince's character. He was portrayed as a capricious, carefree, carpe diem kinda character, while Elika was so devoted to her religious cause, which isn't anything to be ashamed of, but consequentially, it caused her to live for a future that would yield no reverence or happiness for her, in contrast to the Prince's lifestyle, which had him constantly seeking thrills. Ultimately though, the Prince made the choice himself to revive her. Reckless, inconsiderate of Elika's own wishes, and selfish as it was, it made sense considering how the Prince had acted throughout the story.
ZealousD said:Did you even see the ending? It's clear that they have a sequel in mind, even though it may or may not get greenlit.
vareon said:With Ahriman free? It looks to me that was good enough to end the saga as it is. You might be right, though, perhaps I misunderstood something at the ending.
I just beat the game, my whole impression about the ending is thatTheChillyAcademic said:Thats a good point! If anything, The Prince doesn't care either way. He knows damn well that the reason Elika's father went all dark side was because he sold his soul (or by extension, swore allegiance to Ahriman as the Corrupted did) to Ahriman to save his daughter. Even knowing this he made the choice to release Ahriman once again. Its been argued to death whether or not this was the "right" thing to do, most people tend to disagree with The Prince's actions but then again most people aren't The Prince.
I think what's frustrating for most people is that since you are given relative freedom on how you want to tackle the sequential order of healing the land, the fact that you have NO choice in reviving Elika seems like a slap in the face. I still contest that forcing the narrative down this particular path was a good choice, albeit controversial.
Anyway, after Ahriman is free again, we see the temple crumble and the true form of the Dark God looks to have literally rocketed out of his prison. Re-releasing Ahriman is the biggest fuck you The Prince can do to Ormaz.
I was sure she died because she was climbing the Fertile Grounds (pre Ormaz granted powers) and well, fell lol
-Winnie- said:Overall, like Assassin's Creed, the repetition didn't bother me until near the very end, but even then I still enjoyed the game. Was a great experience and I'll definitely be getting the sequel. c:And I'm kinda disappointed that we still don't know the Prince's name. :/
