Official PS3 Custom Theme Thread

Well I went through the sprites and tried to do one for settings, movie, music, etc.

Yeah, looking back at them they don't have no connection to what they're for. It does feel less designed, though. Compare to Modus' theme (which is great, and clearly by a accomplished graphics artist): his icons are all icons, not just pictures. It makes it cleaner, more useable, and easier to parse.

I don't mean to go all negative on you, though! The sprites and pictures you chose are quite attractive, no matter what I think. I was just trying to explain that they probably don't provide much "hook" to convince someone else to complete your idea. Believe me, I wish I was skilled enough to do some of this.

Yeah, I suppose you're right.

The problem is that there's no specific mention of movies or music.

I was thinking the king's messenger was music because she looks like she's dancing, and the mole could be a photographer, and yeah...I guess I'm the only one who thinks like this.

Perhaps I could get a little camera, film reel, etc. added to the sprites.

And as for the designed part, I did these in paint. It was a mockup, not a theme. I clearly stated that.

My backgrounds are coming out completely screwey. Any ideas? I have no idea whats wrong...
Same here, I'm displaying in 1080i and it seems that the background is getting cut off, as if the resolution is too high.

For reference, this is happening with the Neogaf one...I think the SotC is fitted correctly on my display.

Mine is slanted and blurred for some reason. COMPLETELY messed up. :(

Cmon, this is the last thing I need... :)

That's just your display's overscan - my RP HDTV is set up for 3% overscan and that cuts off Modus' theme at "oGaf".

Modus - if you get a chance could you at least whip up a new background (no real need to compile it) with the Neogaf and Modus logos moved in from the corners a bit? It looks great :D

It looks like the links that aren't the official sony ones are not working through the PS3 browser. I'm trying to figure out how we can get direct links to work so that all the good themes will be installable from the original post. If anyone can help figure out what's going on and what we need to change, that would be great.

Hmm I'll try my hand at creating one of theses tomorrow.

EDIT: Yesterday I tried uploading the non-working .p3t files to a file hosting site and it worked fine.
Example, click this LINK using your PS3.

DONE! I hope you guys enjoy the Portal Theme. :)

And now off to bed for some much needed sleep. Took me about five hours to do. :p

It worked for me with the sample theme.

Modus does it again. I'm actually using this version of the bg with the xmb highlighting vertical flare added to it along with the old/standard icons. Looks simple and great. Think I'll stick with this for now and then start cycling multiple themes with the xmb launch.

Also, it will help to know if you people like it or not, before I jump on trying to do more :p
I think it's clear that pretty much all of us love this theme. Hell, it even makes the new Sony ad banner look more attractive. Nice work.

I'm using your Neogaf theme m0dus and it looks great, too bad my TV cuts off a little bit of the upper left corner (NeoGAF text) and the lower right corner (m0dus logo).
Are you on a non 1080p display? Try reducing the image in your PS3 below 100% or resizing the bg with a program.

Ya, the sample worked for me too but it looks like none of the other ones, especially NeoGAF theme. I guess I could try the file hosting services but how long do those last? I was hoping that we could find something where it would be more stable. What do you guys think?

More than 400 posts for a single feature added in FW 2.0, not bad ;).

I like how they brought both BG and XMB customization to both PSP and PS3 allowing the user to personalize their console for free (and thanks to various benefactors on the web get an awesome collection of very well made BG's and themes :D).

I guess it is possible to change the notifications box (it's blue instead of grey)...

Not my picture. Someone needs to figure out how to make it more appealing or transparent.

it's to you to creat a png with the color to display.
if you look the xml files you will see a line:

<notification src="notification.png" />

it's this line refer the notification display icon.

the sfre black and apple themes are awesome.
Yeah. I just set it as the theme for my Japanese account. The original looks amazing as is, but I changed the bg to a 1920 x 1080 version of this photo

Mmm.

i don't even have a ps3, but i was interested in what the themes in this thread look like... and i have to say i think of buying a widescreen monitor just to be able to put this beauty into the background. very impressive, fantastic work!

I'd like to request a Assassin's Creed theme. Pref with the background of him riding his horse through some old ruins. I'd do one myself, if it weren't for my PC being busted.

I have somethin' reeeeaaaaally cool in mind for the MGS4 theme. it's gonna basically quadruple the work, but I think people will appreciate it.

:O
*hype* *hype*

Looking forward to it!

Go modus!

It would be nice if Sony released the original icons in vector form...so we could then modify them... well if I guess if Sony doesn't, some one will ;)

You're the best kind of insane. Looking forward to the finished product. Also, if you ever get a chance to do a few more PSP & 360 themes and/or bgs we'd all appreciate it.

I'm lots of crazy. And having 4 250mb PSDs open simultaneously so I could work on all of them in tandem reminded me I need more RAM. :p

As far as the 360 bgs . . . let's just say, I'm in talks with some folks. And keeping mah fingers crossed.

Hey modus... Just a thought ... I know you are the genious here.. but I think that for the final frame.. Is it possible to make the upper portion of snakes body bump mapped or something and have it resemble/copy the back ground? I can't really explain it :( :(

Also do you have a webpage or something? I think alot of us will be happy to support your webpage with some page hits.. and maybe ad clicks as well :lol
nevermind looks like your webpage has no ads

m0dus said:
Yeah, I hate ads :p

as far as the final frame--I'm not exaaactly sure what you mean :) you can see the background through his body.

I think what he means is, here you completely see through Snake's body, as if it was just a perfect transparency effect.

In MGS2's intro (and in Predator, for instance. I mean the movie), when he goes camo, you can see through him, but the visual trick isn't completely perfect, just as if what is placed behind the camo'ed character was "mapped" to his body form. It looks a bit... "hazy", deformed

Dunno how to explain it :/

And I'm not sure it's easily doable either. But looking at what you're producing, I'm sure you can :p

Excellent work man.

ah. so I have to go back to the mesh you mean. :

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. it will require some more 3d work :p

Like this :

And yeah, I'm afraid you have to rework the 3D background completely :/

I'm no photoshop expert, but I'm not sure at all it can be done with it.

Best of luck with that. The more concurrent streams of income one can come by, the better.

I'm actually proud of the final camo effect--seriously, is it at least close? It has been a long time since I played an MGS game, to be honest.
I like the gradient and the end result of the different torso and lower body transition (including the current flowing through the suit - nice touch). I do, however, have to agree that if Snake had more of a mapped effect going it would be closer to the game. Thing is, short of having an actual 3D model to work with I don't see that being remotely "easy" to pull off. A good photoshop job would partially do the trick, if not ultimately lacking that pristine CG 3D pop. As an artistic take on the look, the translucent bottom + transparent upper is seriously well done.

People need to also keep in mind that Modus and others are creating these time and resource consuming themes free of charge for the rest of us.

edit:
and in the hour it took from when I typed this to be able to come back to my system and hit reply - got called away - the point has already been illustrated.
