New features:

Create a Finisher

Yuke’s clever solution to this for the Create A Finisher is to put pretty much every move in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 at the modder’s disposal, and let them edit said moves together in order to formulate proprietary finishers. And, if you really think about it, most real, er, fake wrestlers begin with the sport’s basics maneuvers when coming up with their signature finishers anyways.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009’s Create A Finisher mode could not be any more user-friendly. Don’t mistake this friendliness for superficiality, however, as the sheer number of moves—and the ability to layer these moves—makes for a mode worthy of the true mat head.

Once the Create A Finisher loads, users are met with two generic-looking wrestling characters. One luchador has been colored completely green, and the other is red from head-to-toe; these colors are used to help separate the “finisher” from the “finishee.” We’re pretty sure Yuke’s didn’t mean for these test dummies to look like former WWE standout Kurt Angle, but, well, these character models look like Kurt Angle, for what that’s worth.

Too tired to add anything else, but it's definitely an improvement over last years.

Custom music is still in and now you can use the themes during matches (sure, why not)

CAW is still as awesome as ever, so I'm making my Crow Sting straight away.

Uh, that's it I think.
 
Have mine preordered. '08 was probably my most-played game this year. The online is fun when you don't have bitches and glitchers.
 
Are there legends in this one? I took a peek at the roster, and am actually surprised that it looks like it has a decent amount of names in it.


All it needs are a few big name legends and I might actually bite on this as I want a more next gen Smackdown after last playing 07 (which was basically 06 in high res)

Legends are being held for Legends of Wrestling coming out next year.
 
Meh... Last one I bought was 06. They really need to stop this every year with small tweaks shit. The CAW is the only redeeming feature of this series at the moment.

Also: No legends, no sale.
 
yeah, seriously. Why should I pick this up if I can just pick up 07 with a great roster for 9 bucks?

No legends is a huge blow to a purchase.
 
Since the Legends of Wrestlemania game comes out in March, I'm ok with there not being any legends in this game. They usually end up being the same 4 /5 guys and maybe 3 new ones. I'm hoping the LOW games has pretty much every legend that has been in the previous Smackdown games since 2003.
 
I miss 2007's roster with Bam Bam Bigelow and Mr. Perfect.

Bring them back, THQ!

Fairly large roster for the series, though. Hope they use them or at least most of them in the career mode and Road to WM.
 
And don't forget Road to Wrestlemania mode with more focused strories. A normal career mode and the removal of that god awful GM mode.

Before I sign off I have something I wanted to share. The night before I went to THQ headquarters I had the opportunity to sit down for a drink with Bryan Williams, Creative Manager working on the title. His knowledge of WWE lore in general was impeccable, and it was obvious from talking to him that he has a real love for wrestling. I felt this to be something that gave me a lot more faith in the product I would get to play the next day - it was really refreshing to see that the development team working on the game has the same passion as the fans they are making it for. To hear him talking about the game and getting to see how important it was to him that the game feel authentically WWE it really set my expectations high on what I'd get to play the next day. And to being perfectly honest, my expectations were met and more.

I got the chance to preview Smackdown vs Raw 2009 at THQ in California and later again last week in Tampa Bay. Keep in mind my preview is based on having never played 2007 or 2008 before ... hell I haven't played a wrestling game since coin op's in the 80's to be honest.

With that caveat, the game is alot of fun and will be easy to get into (having the guys over and getting drunk), while at the same time offering alot of strategic options for players that are really serious about it.

For what it's worth I like it. I have a "second look" article I wrote up which should go up in the next day or two, I'll link it here.

I found this particular display amusing =) I'm not so sure Soul Calibur is exactly the same genre as Smackdown vs Raw :D
 
I'm some what excited for the game because of the large roster and the fact that I can tweak the roster and switch wrestlers to different brands. I've bought every smackdown since day one so Im kind of a sucker for the franchise.

I got the game earlier this week when a store put it out early. It's actually, and I hate to admit it, quite a bit better this year. The Create-A-Finisher is really nice even though most of the transitions between animations could be a lot better.

The Highlight Reel is a disappointment. You can create a finisher that's longer than the allowed recording time of the highlight reel. That means you have to get halfway through your finisher and pause, enter highlight reel and save it from the beginning, then unpause and let it finish so you can pause it and save the recording of the rest - then stitch it together in the production part.

And the cameras for HR almost all suck - the crane cameras are too far away to see anything, and the free cam doesn't let you (that I've found) move it up/down to get different angles.

The game is way easier than last year. You get a finisher in literally a matter of seconds, though it'll generally take two or three to drop a guy down to where he can get pinned.

Nice touch having signature moves, giving each wrestler more personalized move sets for power moves.

Road to Wrestlemania is a bit of a waste. After getting tired of the sub-par dialog (even for a wrestling game) in the Cena one I just skipped all the cutscenes and burned through it in less than three hours. The HHH and CM Punk ones were better.

Career mode is fun, but if I have to bump CAW stats by doing this...no way I'm making anywhere near as many CAW this year.

He's not in it, but there's a moveset for him and two entrances (one with title, one without) - so a CAW is bound to pop up soon.

how is the A.I. on legend difficulty? every year the smackdown AI is pretty shitty. also how does career mode progress?

When we talk about technical performance it's not necessarily big things but many of the little things that have been improved. Everything from better load times and dynamic lighting to better motion capture resulting in fluidity of fighter moves (yes even the custom finishers). I was amazed at how realistic the title looked while still maintaining that all important fun factor.

With so many great games on the horizon gamers are going to have a lot to consider as to what games they should pick out. Unlike the multitude of first person shooters, RPGs and racers about to hit, there is really no other game that will compete with Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 within the fighting genre. This fact alone might be enough to propel a purchase, but the longevity factor within the title's varied multiplayer modes is a deal sealer.

When I wrote up the article I knew a demo was out but wasn't sure if it was on both Live and PSN or just PSN (it's actually only on PSN). I guess editorial didn't catch my little slip.

The sentiment still stands. If you have a PS3 check out the demo there! :D
 
I felt the Road To Wrestlemania campaign, while fun, is something that will be blown through very quickly.

The real longevity in this game is going to be the varied multiplayer modes. It will be a great game for playing local multiplayer, and both PSN and XBLA will offer online opponents for those that don't have anyone handy to get drunk with in real life.

Again, I never played 2007 or 2008, but my experience with 2009 was that within about 15 minutes I'd figured out the controls and felt like I was useful in the suitcase match I played. That's really important for reeling in the casuals ... but on the same note the strategies an experienced player can employ will keep the hardcores coming back.

Same as every other year, increasing the AI seems to just bump up their reversals. There are an impressive number of settings you can change though, so I'm sure someone will come up with sliders that work.

You start career mode as a newbie with low stats and a group of opponents plus a champion who's grayed out to start. You need to get a certain number of stars (earned by doing matches - good match gets you four or five stars, etc...) to unlock the top guy. Then you choose to keep wrestling (To build stats, I guess...you get a stat increase after every match based on what you did. Do submission and get better at submission.) or make your next bout a #1 contender match. Win that match and you can choose to make your next one a championship match.

If you choose championship, you'll forward to the next PPV (so you might want to just wrestle some normal bouts until the match before the PPV) and face the champ. This seems to be a stipulation match (cage, falls count anywhere, etc..) match, with the stipulation unlocking after you win.

Once you hold the championship, two new paths open up and you choose one. Winning the first belt (intercontinental, I think) opened up ECW and USA title paths. I think winning ECW opened a tag title or the cruiserweight - so I took my heavyweight to dominate the cruisers.

All in all, it seems like a fun mode. Would I want to do that to bump the stats on every CAW I make? No way.
 
thanks chrange. I really don't care about CAW in any shape or form. I just like playing with the WWE roster. you can use WWE stars in career mode right?

I keep buying them like NBA games and it's like I can't trade them in because the previous year might have a mode or wrestlers that are no longer with the company....or alive! (see SVR07)
Of course it's for the 360 and mine is still dead. :(
 
I just realized that I don't know half the guys on either roster anymore. Time really fly's when you step away from this shit.

The demo is what I expected it to be, which is pretty much the same game from 99' with moves mapped to the right stick instead of O.

They can brag all they want about the new tag-team features, the core gameplay is exactly the same as it's always been.

I was quite surprised by the demo actually. The last Smackdown game I played was Smackdown vs Raw 2006. I was turned off when they announced that they are not releasing SvR07 on for PS3 so I didn't bother buying it. Played the 09 demo and there are ALOT of Improvements!

Ofcourse there are still some shit that they haven't fixed and changed so I'm still debating whether i should pick it up and give it a rent or not. Most likely I won't.
 
I thought the demo was great! The A.I. was waaay too easy though. (Just for demo purposes I guess.) But the Tag-Team wrestling is a HUGE improvement over last years! I love the if I do a finisher, my partner attacks my opponents partner so he doesn't interrupt my 3-count. I used to have a very hard time getting a 3-count before due to opponent interference.

I also like the new camera angle when exiting the ring.
 
The new camera angle for the 'bottom' of the ring is good. The angle for the other sides is HORRIBLE, and there's no way I could find to turn that off. Trying to whip someone onto the announcer's table is just WAY harder than it needs to be. What a disappointment that 'improvement' was.
