Official Two Worlds thread - the Oblivion killer?

@ Spider-Jerusalem:

Thx man, hadn´t seen these yet! :)

@ GhaleonEB:

The "Oblivion-Killer?" thingy comes straight from the german PC mag "Gamestar", headlining their 15 min preview of this game. I simply wanted to put that claim up for discussion, loving Oblivion myself. But hey - why shouldn´t the dev´s be able to improve an already very good concept?

@ Aaron:

They have very differing areas. In the north vast woodland, with bears and wolves. The south will be a desert with dragons and bugs and snake-people. In between you´ll find everything from huge cities to farms, with ogres and dwarfs and all the usual stuff.

Edit/PS: The lady shown on the link Spider_Jerusalem provided should be on the official cover, from last I´ve heard.

News:
The closed beta has been running for over a week now. And it looks as if the US will get a delayed release (June 26th), while its still dated for May 9th in europe.

And thats what the game looks like atm:

Looks like the May release date is for real - preordering started yesterday.
In addition to the "normal" version comes a "Royal Edition". For roughly 5 Euros more you get a t-shirt, a 55 card deck and a making of/music dvd.

Edit: The "Royal Edition" for the PC will contain an additional full metal letter opener in form of a 7 inch sword from the game.

Man, I want this game. I have a good feeling it will be a nice RPG follow up after more than a year playing Oblivion. Maybe not as good, but good and different. The 8 player co-op alone maybe real nice if done right. Hopefully, the US will see a release not too long after the May release in Europe. EB games and GS are showing the end of June atm.

How is it even possible to release an in-game screenshot and have every single object in the picture look like it was badly photoshopped in? Christ even the guy's helmet looks tacked on.

Why do people keep calling a game "XXX Killer" when we all d@mn well know that the only "XXX Killer" will be "XXX 2"?

Folks said all these different games would be a Halo Killer. Only game that was a Halo killer, was Halo 2.

Folks said all these different games would be a GTA3 Killer. Only game that was a GTA3 Killer, was GTA:SA.

The list keeps going on and on. It's like giving unrealistic hopes, repeatedly, that someone else is going to just destroy the standard set by someone else. Does it happen? It does on occasion. Not often though & definately not by whom most folks think it'll be done by either.

Adding an interesting multiplayer aspect to the genre gives it at least a chance, I´d say. But I´ll spare my final judgement until I played the final version.
Pre-Order (Royal Edition) +1 :D

I like it when folks at least *try* to make a game an "Oblivion Killer" game. Then that only serves to make Bethesda to work even *harder* to keep it's crown of "Best of..." that everyone else then shoots for in that genre.

I do like all the extra goodies in that Royal Edition, but we'll see in the end. I have to still finish Oblivion (let alone Gears of War) first. I know...I'm slow :(

Innovations: (differences to Oblivion)
- enemies don´t level with you - the dragon is too strong? run, return later
- don´t like your character class? - go to a "career changer"
- fighting: blocking is automated, the player just attacks

Enemies don't level with you is an innovation? :lol :lol :lol

Class changing and automated fighting are hardly anything new either.

Differences to Oblivion? Yes. Innovation? No.

But you do know, that the 2nd screenshot is a couple of months older than the 1st, don´t you?

I do, I was just using it to illustrate the game's patchy art style. Even in the recent shots some characters just look .. off. I think "lifeless" is the word I'm looking for... For example; the big demon on the header of the official web page looks more like he's waving at the mailman than attacking.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this one turn out to be better than average. I'm just not really counting on it at this point. Nothing looks horrible per se, but almost everything looks so generic.

Preview on Gamespot is up.
Just going through it now, but:

In fact, at 35 square kilometres, the world that Reality Pump has crafted is even bigger than Oblivion's world.

The main quest will take about 20 hours to complete, but those who want to engage in side quests and proper exploration can easily expect that number to triple.
Does not compute, unless the larger area is much more sparse. Shivering Isles is going to get me nearly 60 hours of playtime alone.

Sexy boxart will not make me buy this game. Especially considering there is no sexiness in game. False advertising!

I wondered about the same thing - last time I heard something of about 50h main quest, more than an additional 100h for the side quests. Who knows, it´s probably hard to estimate.

Hmmm...the game still looks weird in a lot of shots because a lot things don't seem to share quite the same lighting...like everything has been composited in using completely unrelated layers. But I'm still interested if only because of the promise of online co-op in a huge sandbox world with the swords 'n sorcery motif. Hell, I slogged through Dungeon Lords with a friend because it had the online/LAN co-op thing in a fantasy setting. This game couldn't possibly be as badly put together as that game.

Very, very nice. I think that for a team not nearly big and skilled like the Bethesda one, the did a very good job. Now we've to see if they'll manage to give us a polished game with no glitches.

Looks pretty. Maybe it won't suck like oblivion did.

The fact that the combat is drastically different from oblivion is a plus for me (from the description in the thread it sounds similar to many action games, and things like WoW). I may decide try this game out after I learn some more.

I'm liking it. Combat looks pretty good with nice animations, and the world looks great thanks to real shadowing on everything; like in the city all the architecture is lit and shadowed properly or in one of those pics you can see the tree casting it's shadow onto a rock which casts it's own shadow. That alone is a huge step up from Oblivion. Add dual-wielding, mounted combat, no level scaling, no loading, and hopefully better interface/inventory and things are looking good. As long as this game doesn't suffer from Gothic-style dungeon and quest design this might really be a "killer".

I am really, really looking forward to this game, so hopefully it doesn't stumble in some yet unforseen but critical manner.

Yeah, main concern right there.

Who's the publisher? As long as it's not Atari I am some what relieved. :)

I pretty much hope it's not an oblivion killer. I don't want to play a game and get the impression of a cheap clone of something else.

Two Worlds seems to be a nice role-playing game if you don't expect any surprises. Those screenshots look in fact strange, but they also did on oblivion. The gameplay-movies were a lot better.

The first time I saw this, I thought wow, maybe this is what Gothic 3 would be like if they did it right. I barely played the third because it was so buggy with terrible combat.

I do know the quest design was bloody awesome for the first two Gothics though, and the split decisions for quests even better than KOTOR.

So what's really wrong with the Quest (And dungeon) design?
