Oh ye GAF will love this original thread: Getting a 360

Oh and there are over 440 demos on the marketplace right now. Remember you can log into Xbox.com and throw them in your download list.. next time you log into LIVE they start downloading. The single best part of the 360 is how everything works together..

That is a damned impressive feature. I'm going to use that lots (I'm gonna kill my bandwidth!).

Stranglehold
Saint's Row
Just Cause
Condemened: Criminal Origins

I've played and finished all four of those games. :D

Stranglehold: over-the-top action game; right when it starts to get repetitive to the point of annoyance, the game is just about finished. Definite rent, as you may not feel the urge to play it to completion more than once.

Saint's Row: a GTA: SA clone, but more crude, and not as polished. Still, good dumb fun. The sequel is more dumberer fun! Buy it, as there's so much to do.

Just Cause: it's basically GTA: Tropical Island Adventures. I had more fun with it than Mercs 2, which has a similar setting. The stunts are completely ridiculous, i.e. parachuting onto a moving truck, but that's what makes it fun. Solid buy, as it has a lot of content, and it's dirt cheap these days.

Condemned: one of the best launch games, if not the best IMO (COD2 was great too). It's a First-person survival horror game. It's not really a shooter, as most of the combat is melee. Worth buying IMO, but at least rent it and finish it (it's about 8 to 10 hours). Although, you could probably buy it for the same price as renting it.

Overall, I'd rank'em...

1. Condemned
2. Saint's Row
3. Just Cause
4. Stranglehold

Fable II(Goty 08)
Mass Effect(Goty 07) should be like $20->$30
Lost Odyssey
Last remnant(make sure you install)
Infinite Undiscovery if you love RPGs.

you can find stranglehold for $10-15 new. its well worth that.

just cause is not gta-ish...its more havana drug cartel miami vice-ish. not very popular but i think its a fun game. its cheap. buy it. especially with the next-gen sequel in the works

I recently got a 360 too (like a week ago or so) and need a couple of games on the cheap. I've got the following:
Dead Rising
Rainbow Six Vegas
Mass Effect
The Orange Box
Crackdown
Lost Planet

And Lego Indy w/Kung-Fu Panda are coming soon since it didn't come with the Xbox. Can I get some thoughts on these games?
Stranglehold
Saint's Row
Just Cause
Condemened: Criminal Origins

Stranglehold - I found it boring but it does have some awesome action.

Saint's Row - A very solid GTA clone... well worth the price

Just Cause - Had a ton of promise and was fun for a while but got old after 10+hours..

Condemened: Criminal Origins - Awesome game... pick it up, turn down the lights and have fun.

Also.. I am fairly sure all of these have Demos on the marketplace...

Firstly if you've not got Dead Space on PS3 yet, then that would be my first recommendation.

Other than that:-

Dead Rising (great fun, and the save system is great)
Mass Effect (unless you've got it for PC)
PGR4, Forza 2
Braid
Geo Wars 2

Dead Rising Dead Rising Dead Rising Dead Rising.

Oblivion if you haven't played it yet. Just play it on easy and you get all the awesomeness of the game without all the annoyance.

You know me so well. <3

You also know I have a furious buying habit, tag be damned.

Gamefly is having an end of the year sale right now on pre-played games, a lot of them being under $10. I just bought UT3 for $10, but you'll want to jump on this deal if you plan on getting any good titles before they run out.

Well Left for Dead is great fun, but seriously get that shit for the PC dude.

If you went for Gears on the PC, I'd say do this. Even if you don't have a lot of friends that play Steam (there is a GAF thread with a lot of Steam usernames in the OT section), playing on there can't be beat.

edit: should have read two posts ahead :-P. Also, if you liked Ninja Gaiden Sigma you could always get NG2.

From the titles you listed, you might like Outpost Kaloki X for XBLA (launch title so often overlooked)

Also, ignore the people who are too casual for Dead Rising

Thanks for the XBLA recommendation.

I was gonna get Dead Rising, but all I could find was the platinum hits version for $25. I might spring for $20 or even $25...but there's no way in hell I'm buying a game with that ridiculous platinum hits cover.

Also, Castle Crashers is now on my to buy list. Looks like they're getting the patch out tomorrow. Awesome.

Instead of Saints Row 1, you should just get the second. Sure, more expensive, but its much improved. It's a GTA-clone, sure, but it's more of a San Andreas clone. So open, so much to do. :)

cheap games are a boon and a curse

I found that I got a bit crazy over bargain hunting and spent more time searching and trying them for five minutes than I did actually sitting down and playing through something.

keep a list of stuff you want, and check it's not disappearing out of stock, but don't buy on sight until you've finished a few.

It's a good thing 360 newcomers think about Crackdown.

That way I don't have to yell it at them in every recommendation thread.

BUY CRACKDOWN !

(just in case)

The 360 games I really enjoyed most have been:

Fable II
Oblivion
Mass Effect
Tales of Vesperia
Bioshock
Call of Duty 4

I've got a ton of other 360 games like Lost Odyssey, Fallout 3, and a bunch others but I haven't either finished them or played enough to give a fair recommendation.

I got my 360 for a tri-Ace JRPG and ended up putting all my heart and soul into a WRPG known as Mass Effect.

Buy it, play it, love it.

Absolutely. Mass Effect for the win!

Edit: not reading all replies for the loss. Glad you've already got it. How about Fable 2?

Non LE. And there's a tiny cut on the spine. :(

BUT FUCK YEAH TALES OF VESPERIA!

2 more days!

I don't think the LE is worth it should you pay more than 60 bucks. I bought it because it was 50 on Amazon's DOTD. Doesn't seem to come with anything too great extra, just a tin case and a soundtrack CD.

I don't know if ya'll even have em in Canada or if the sale is going on up there, but Blockbuster Video (and Gamerush) are having a B1G1 sale right now on anything under $15.

You can find a ton of good shit depending on the store. GTA4, PGR3, Burnout Revenge, Blue Dragon, VF5, Condemned, Conan, Crackdown, Saint's Row and a lot more.

Also Gamestop is having B2G1 on the day after Christmas, but again unsure if the Heathens of the North follow.

I'm still catching up on so many games. I've thoroughly enjoyed Lost Odyssey, Kameo and Banjo N&B. Crackdown demo was a lot of fun, so I'll probably pick that up some time soon.

Canada really sucks. GTA4 still sells for $60 new, $55 used here.

Got my 360, along with way more games than I'll have a chance to play through. :lol

Hardware and Accessories ($380 total):
Xbox 360 60GB Pro ($260, with Kung-Fu Panda, Indiana Jones, Halo 3 and Stranglehold)
extra controller ($60, I now own 3 because I also had one for the PC)
12+1 months XBLive ($60)

360 Games ($302 total):
Banjo Kazooie ($40)
Beautiful Katamari ($13)
Blue Dragon ($16)
Crackdown ($13)
Culdcept Saga ($16)
Earth Defense Force ($20)
Gears of War 2 ($60)
Halo 3 (free)
Infinite Undiscovery ($20)
Kameo ($9)
Kung-Fu Panda (free)
LEGO Indiana Jones (free)
Stranglehold (free)
Tales of Vesperia ($65)
The Darkness ($10)
The Last Remnant ($20)

XBLA + DLC ($72 total):
Braid
Castle Crashers
Crackdown DLC
Geometry Wars 2
n+

Grand total: $738 (+tax)

$350 of that was from Christmas presents, and another $150 of the games from trade-in at EB. Total to me was $238.

------

As for impressions...I love the 360 so far. Achievements are really great motivators, which is superb for me since I have trouble finishing games.

So far I've played all the XBLA games, Crackdown, EDF, Gears 2, Halo 3, and Tales of Vesperia.

Out of the XBLA games, I can safely say I love them all. Braid is ingenious sometimes (especially worlds 4 and 5). Castle Crashers is an awesome 4 player grindfest, and is quite addicting. Geometry Wars 2 is the very definition of addicting, thanks to the leaderboard implementation and some fantastic achievements. n+ is an extremely awesome platformer...and has some great co-op levels to boot.

Crackdown is easily the best open world game I've played. Couldn't stand GTA4, and had problems with Burnout Paradise. This is like a meld of both, but with fun added on top! I've been playing co-op almost exclusively, and it's been a blast roaming around the city trying to find anything we can to exploit. It kept me up until 5am on a work night!

EDF has, as many have warned me, been pretty bad. Maybe it gets better later on, but 4 levels in, the game hasn't changed at all. Hopefully some bosses or big enemies come in to make it more interesting soon enough.

Gears 2, is well, Gears. Not as big of an improvement over Gears 1 as I would have hoped, but it's still an improvement. Fun game, but I partially wish I hadn't have spent $60 on it.

Halo 3 has on OK campaign. I've played it co-op exclusively so it's still been pretty fun so far. I'm at the Cortana level now...time to see if it's as bad as everyone says. I'm anxious to see some of the Forge and Theater creations, which were my main reasons for wanting the game.

Tales of Vesperia is really, really awesome. Exactly what I want from a next-gen action RPG. The game is fast...there's been no endless wandering around, and no backtracking so far. Battles are far better than Symphonia, thanks to the free-roam ability. I love RPGs that don't waste my time, and this is one of em. Looks great to boot.

I have to say that my favorite things about the 360 so far are achievements and the party system (this mostly...it's so damn easy to just join someone...and voice chat over any software is extremely appreciated).

edit: forgot to add Blue Dragon

Damn that's a merry Christmas. You'll have some joy for a while. Those XBLA games are ace, and you've got some great 360 games to go through for a while.

i bought it and Forza for $20, i remember playing the demo with friends a long time ago but im not sure if its as addicting now.

Its only $10 so i can't complain.

Rumble Roses XX dammit.

It's actually a really good wrestling game once you get over the fact that 90% of the time it's large-chested women in tiny outfits getting each other into compromising positions. Shoot you could probably get a copy these days for $5...great way to relax after a strenous session of Gears/Halo/N+/Geometry Wars/???

*Only reason I don't play it anymore is because I moved the 360 into the living room* =(

While I'm on the cheap as free subject. Senkou No Ronde is a good one. It's the 2D equivalent to Virtual On and quite a bit of fun(especially on the off-chance you find someone else playing it online) Throw in Project Sylpheed for somewhere between $5 and $10 as well as it's one of the few Space Combat games out there this gen.

I got a 360 for my birthday last week, but didn't think it would be worth starting a thread over. It's an arcade but I got a 2nd controller (black!).

Games
Madden 08
Burnout Paradise
GTA IV
Soul Calibur IV

I do have some questions, though:

1. I actually did get an Arcade, which I'm fine with. Yeah PL is a casuzl LOLZ big deal. What I'm wondering is, when I upgrade to an HDTV (42" this summer!), is component ok or is HDMI required? Are official MS cords ok or are 3rd party things ok? I know monster is a rip off so you can skip that part.

2. I got a 256 MB card thing which seems to be working ok so far. Would anybody recommend a hard drive? How big do I need? Can I buy them used and would anybody recommend against that? Any hacks that I can do so it will recognize a USB external HDD?

3. If it matters, I don't intend on going online, or at least I refuse to pay to do so (I'm not paying $99 for a wifi dongle and i'm not paying for the live service). The question is if there is a cheaper/free way to get online and play against people or if that's gold only? Is there an easier way to plug my 360 into the internet w/o a dongle?

4. Why am I so bad at Madden? I used to crush it back in '02. Now I can barely make good calls or draft a decent team. Man this shit got hard. What's the deal with the hit stick and do I have to hit it every time? Do i have to press a button to catch the effing ball? Where's the play by play calls?

5. Controllers: where's the cord when I run out of batteries?! Man this thing is a money sink. Anyway, I bought a rechargeable battery pack. Is there a good way to sand off the little points on the sticks? Jahesszeus those things are irritating. Also, why is my new controller squeeking already? The X button squeeks like your neighbor's bed. I hate that sound.

6. Anything else besides HDMI and an HDD that I'll eventually need? How many game saves will the 256 hold? Will it hold enough that I can make custom characters on SCIV (I've already made a bunch of hotties in panties with bigg bazzooombas)?

7. Worrying preemptively about RROD. Any tricks you guys know to prevent it from happening? What should I do if it actually happens?

8. Any warnings against using my 360 as a DVD player so I can move my old one out of the LR? I'm pretty sure using my PS2 as one (and running it vertical) made the lens wonky so I had to open the thing up to fix it. I don't want the same problem on this thing.

9. I'm decidedly in the "older gamers that now play old games" market. Any recs on games that have hit the $25 or below shelf? I'm in the market for Fight Night 3, which I know I will love.

10. My gamertag is PantherLotus (shockingly), but can I have more than one and should I avoid that? Do I get anything for the achievements? I can't turn them in or anything can I? That would be pretty cool.

11. I really, really want Guitar Hero. The one with 311 is world tour, right? Anybody suggest a used one that I can pick up cheap?

Thanks to all in advance. It's weird being in the noob casual crowd again, but I'll embrace it after the Wii debacle. I need me some games!

Nice man! Get Crackdown! It's really cheap used. If you like open world, this one is the cream of the friggin crop...I'm seriously blown away by it. It's got no story, but the game is awesome fun. It's also nice not to be the bad guy for once.

Official cables are just fine. Just make sure you flip the switch on the cable to "HDTV", and go to the 360 Settings -> Console Settings -> Display and set it to 720p/1080p or whatever the native resolution of your monitor is.

fake edit: do your cables have red, green, and blue, as well as yellow, white, and red? If not, then yes, you will need new cables. I know Cores used to only come with composite (yellow, white, red) cables, but I'm not sure about the current Arcade models. If that's the case, then your best and cheapest option would be an HDMI cable from Amazon or Monoprice.

If you plan on getting any downloadable games, then yeah get the hard drive. If you just plan on XBLA games, then a used 20GB would probably do. If you want to open up the possibility for installing games, videos, Xbox Originals, then you'll want a 60GB, or a 120GB.

If you're online, I'd recommend the Live pack that comes with a 60GB HDD, headset, and 3 months live. Not sure if it has anything else included, but it seemed to be like a great way to upgrade from the Arcade.

Ah so no online. Gold only then. Doesn't seem like you'd get much use out of a hard drive either in that case, unless you plan on installing games.

Never had a problem with the points myself...I suppose you could sand them down, but honestly, since they're rubber coated, I think you'll end up making it worse. Controller definitely shouldn't be sqeaking, see if you can get it replaced where you got the console.

An internet connection? Man, I'd seriously recommend it, even if it does have a steep entry fee. You could pick up a wireless router/bridge for around $30-40 instead of the $99 adapter. The 360 is changing the way I'm thinking about console gaming now. I used to be all PC, but I can see a lot of merit here.

PantherLotus said:
7. Worrying preemptively about RROD. Any tricks you guys know to prevent it from happening? What should I do if it actually happens?

Just keep it in a well ventilated area, and off the carpet if possible. Don't shake/fiddle with the power brick while it's on. If it RROD's, call Microsoft. 3 year warranty.

First off, the 360 would be a really loud DVD player, so I'm not sure you even want to use it as one.

Only use one. I don't think you get anything for achievements. You used to get goodies (though only the top earners every month did, so you pretty much have no chance), but I'm not sure if that still applies. Achivements are just a nice motivator to play your games, and a way to keep track of what you've done. It's nice being able to compare with friends.

Honestly man, if you ever plan on playing Expert, just bog down and buy World Tour. The guitar is a lot better than the 360 GH2 and GH3 guitars.

If you want to go the cheap route, and have a good guitar, then just get GH2 on the PS2.

Have fun dude!

PL, a hdd isn't exactly required to play games, but it sure comes in handy (read: really, get a drive). You will want to get some xbla games at some point, play some demos and most importantly: install your games! Installing means no noise from the drive and shorter loading times on a lot of games.

Arcade models don't come with component cables. You'll need to buy some (or hdmi).

As for controller cords, there are recharge packs out there that have a cord along with the charge pack. I forgot the exact name of that package. Here it is though:

play%20and%20charge%20360.jpg

Honestly, if you don't mind swapping batteries, I'd recommend something like the Sony 15 minute charger. You can probably pick it up with 4 batteries for like $30 or so. Charging 4 batteries in 15 minutes is ace. Plus, the charger has a matching fan which will try to compete with your 360 while it charges! :D

360 battery packs are so damned expensive. In Canada, it's $60 for the controller, and $30 for a play-n-charge. Ridiculous. The battery pack should be $10, and the play-n-charge $15 at most.

Though, if you do sit close to the TV, then a plug-n-play kit would be convenient.

edit: looks like they're 2000mAh...that's not too bad. The 85 percent charge after 1 year is impressive though.
