Okami coming to Wii. For real.

I think it will. They say they're not updating the graphics, nothing about the resolution.
Widescreen on Wii doesn't change the resolution, but going from 4:3 to 16:9 on any game requires modifying the presentation and framing.

I think Okami coming to the Wii is a great idea and made total sense to me. The thing that really shocked me however is that Ready At Dawn are the ones porting it!

I thought that after Daxter and GOW for the PSP they would be above merely porting (no matter the quality of the title) titles to the Wii. They are a talented studio and I thought that having just taken some talent from Naughty Dog were moving onto some brand new IP, a 'AAA' project.

Interesting all the same.

I wonder how long they've been working on this and how much is left to go. If they're not making notable changes and it's already in a playable state, it would seem taking care of bugs would be the biggest thing remaining. However, from the IGN interview

Of course, converting all the assets and making sure they're optimized for the Wii is also very time consuming.

Usually when I think "assets" in terms of game development I'm thinking sound/models/textures/other data files. I wouldn't have thought those were the tricky part of porting from PS2 to Wii?

flark says it's in the hands of a small, discrete team -- i don't think this will get in the way of original work. and if you're going to port something, you couldn't ask for better material

Im seriously excited about this. It seems that just about everything I wanted the wii to get it is getting or something close. Especially niGHTs, Samba de amigo and Okami. I dont know about you guys, but this little system has already made itself worth it to me for not just introducing some promising new IPs like Zack and wiki and King Story, but also bringing back classic games in a new way.

We don't know much about wii's next year lineup, but indeed early 2008 looks great already:
Okami
NiGHTS
SSBB
No More Heroes
Mario Kart
PES
WiiFit
Samba de Amigo
Sega Bass Fishing
Star Soldier R

Loading needs to be cut down. I hope that in giving it to a company like Ready at Dawn, rather than just some small team within Capcom, will help get good results from a team that wants to impress.
Well, having over twice as much system memory, fewer architecture bottlenecks and faster chips should help quite a bit. Might be some work in coverting VU effects to TEV though.

From the interview, it sounds like they're converting the entire engine code... they mention doing this rather than plopping assets into their own RAD engine. Was Okami's engine based of Clover's VJ engine (which used GC code anyway) or developed ground up?

Damn you people for not buying this game on PS2! >:(
But what the hell, this is great news, more Okami love is good. Even if it's just a port (in terms in content), I'm excited! Okami was an excellent game, my personal GOTY 2006.
If this version turns out to be superior to the PS2 game, at least technically (shorter loading times for example - but I did actually like the loading screen mini-games), it would be one step closer to me buying a Wii. :)

I dont think okami warrants extra content, took me 40 hours to complete and I really didnt do everything.

the game is freaking huge as it is. I do hope they fix the loadings that annoyed when I played it. also a option to skip the lame scene whenever you feed an animal, something to turn off the gibberish and speed up text.

Actually, I hope the loading screens aren't shortened too much. After all, the loading screens were the easiest way to earn Demon Fangs.

Little things like this are really what I'm hoping for. I don't expect massive revisions, but this small stuff is easy to implement.

The ability to skip any cutscene on repeated playthroughs would be great as well. Even with the best stories, sometimes, I just want to get on with things.

I agree that Okami is a big game, but as a big fan I would want more Okami, have even more to explore, to see, to do. But then, I would be worried about the original creators not being involved in expanding the world they created.

...what I really want is a sequel that probably never will become reality. Maybe a spiritual sequel though. Go, uh, Platinum games!

RAD is too small for handling next gen, and it makes sense for Capcom to use a PSP dev to handle ps2 to Wii ports, they have most likely reallocated all their in house teams to next gen or going for original IP for wii.

WHAT? How is such a thing achieved? I was unaware that there was some sort of minigame involved here.

Easiest, but definitely not the way to earn masses of them. I'd much prefer the lack of load times, as opposed to a few more paltry fangs...

Too late. Most anyone who wanted to play this bought it on PS2. Wii remote brush strokes sound good but its not worth buying again.

What the heck? Have you read this thread? Apparantly, no one on GAF even owned a PS2! It's pretty shocking actually.

What's next for the Wii Port Industry?

Psychonauts Wii?

PlaneScape Torment Wii?

Monkey Island Wii?

Shit, I think anyone would be happy if any of those got ported/remake on any console. But nice try.

yes please.
although Monkey Island Wii is pretty much taken care of by Zack and wiki.

Well, it does make sense.

I will double dip if in this version there is an option to turn off that grainy "canvas" filter. :lol

yeah, I sort of looked forward to them :lol Even when I had enough fangs, it was fun to try and get more. I wish more games would do this

I bought it and its great. I just wish Clover was still around to handle the port.

While it's not exactly true, I do think this port is a bit too late. Had Capcom greenlit and fast tracked an Okami Wii port back in mid 2006 (when everyone in the press was basically asking for it) it could've released in early 2007 and likely would've cleaned up in the post launch drought imo. Now though, this game's going to be going up against a comparably filled out catalog library (Mario Galaxy, Retroid 3, Zak & Wiki, NiGHTS, etc) and directly against some rather heavy hitters for early 2008 (Mario Kart, Wii Fit, SSBB, DQ Swords, etc).

I think it's going to generally be lost in the shuffle, just as it was on PS2. :/

I didn't finish this one on the PS2, 'cause it seemed like a no-brainer that it would release on the Wii.

awesome game, day-one Wii purchase in my opinion. hopefully they can smooth out some of the rough edges that made it such a chore (too much gibberish speak, too much dialogue, too much design cutscenes)

Oh, I hope this means Killer7 gets a Wii-make.

I'd trade in Okami and the happiness of everybody that's posted in this thread for such a thing to happen. Killer7 in 16:9 with Wii controls would be hot hot sex.

I love the look of Zack + Wiki, but it looks like a pure puzzle adventure, it isn't going to touch the writing of the Monkey Island games. Monkey Island without excellent writing just isn't Monkey Island at all.

Monkey Island Wii would be hot sex though.

I would love to see Jet Set Radio on Wii. In fact, given SEGA has brought back NiGHTS, Alien Syndrome, SEGA Bass Fishing and Samba de Amigo, i wouldn't be surprised.

I'd love to see a new one with DC style tagging using the wiimote. Seeing how Sega is really into reviving things on Wii I think theres a high chance it'll get made.

Ports are easy to make because its already a finished game they want to do quick cash in a cheap way they are Company..
Look at RE4 wii it sells...

Thank you, Kreskin, for this invaluable insight you have shared with us unenlightened peons.

There is a possible alternative to flash games and ports.

The DS eventually had to shelf it's GBA port lifestyle (notable exceptions being the Gyakuten Saiban series, but that's a special exception due to the American release), the Wii is going to have to, too.
