[Old Interview] In 2012, EviLore turned down $5,000,000 to keep control of NeoGAF

Is EviLore about to become the gaming industry's first billionaire?

Banner ad revenue continues to shrink and EviLore refuses to incorporate intrusive, excessive advertising into GAF

Costs of maintaining NeoGAF are rising because it continues to surge with popularity

Yeah no.

EviLore knows power is more valuable than money.

Came here to post this.

Money is the Mc-mansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building that stands for centuries.

well deserved because he put in the work and he saved GAF when it was on the brink of vanishing. He wisely cultivated it to the place it is today. 99.9% of people out there could not have done the same.

It's making him good $$$ now and it's value is only increasing so why sell it now when it will likely be worth more as it continues to grow? We all know once it's sold, it won't be the same and unless the right buyer buys it, it is likely to be dead within 3-5 years under new ownership if the past is any indication.

Evilore is more business savvy than he's too humble to admit.

What happened to Gaf in the past? Ive been here only for 3 years so I dont know what kind of problems the forums faced in the past.

5 mil isn't shit these days, you can't live comfortably on that and he's already said he loves his job so why sell it? So he can buy coke and hookers for 3 months?

like that saying goes. find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life

This. $5m is pocket money in the grand scheme of things. You have a job that you love / is self suffcient, that isn't "work" per se, and who knows what the revenue numbers are like anyway?

I can only admire such a principled man. I would have cashed in that 10 million and be on a yacht to Tahiti by now.

Any sale of Neogaf would almost certainly contain a non-compete disclosure that would last for a good number of years.
Are all of the current mods employees of NeoGAF? If I do say, it's the moderation that keeps the gears greased (which without the engine will explode). EviLore keeps the wheels turning. Point being, if it theoretically came to NewNeoGAF, would it succeed in at least similar fashion?

Huge respect as always EvilLore, all the ad money will keep you going anyways (and maybe even past that sum). Good luck with the continued travels!

Imagine if EA bought GAF and threw it into Origin....*shudder*

What's the correct way to pronounce 'EviLore'?

No disrespect to my fellow GAFers, but I need to hear this direct from the source.

Modding is a volunteer position.

Please. You know what I like about money? I can stack it on a table, like this one. I can measure it with a yardstick. I can see it, smell it, buy things with it - houses, cars, clothes. Things that are real.

Wouldn't it be too risky to buy GAF? I mean, it's members are not employees. So what would prevent us from just migrating to another forum or from creating a new one?

Honest question.

Same reason that Facebook wanted to buy Instagram for billions....it's a community.

I'm sure any new owner of GAF would walk in (hell, they may even keep EviLore as the guy in charge) and proclaim that absolutely nothing will change.

Of course things inevitably would, but I'm sure that GAF makes money from ad revenue as-is, it's continually growing so it has good investment potential (a clearly demonstrated $5 million -> $10 million increase in valuation from interested parties shows this), and it has quite the reputation.

Its unique attributes (strict moderation, exclusive-club-esque limited approval of new members, a lot of game developers / people in games media who contribute to the site, etc.) really add to its allure.

10 million for gaf? i wonder what kind of $ is being offered to moot then

Buying 4chan would be more trouble than it's worth.

"You want it? Here, take it off my hands. But I warn you, the things you'll see will corrupt your mind forever".

Who is going to be the next EviLore? I vote... me! I want to be rich.

For real tho, I wonder if he can start a new forum if he sells? With all his knowledge of running Gaf then being a competitor. Insider competitor laws? The contract? I don't know.

I'm assuming there would eventually be an influx of people souring the experience. IGN or whatever would love a forum of this level and they'd obviously want more users.

80% of the veterans using sold Neogaf and NNGAF would take things back to 2004/2005 and the forum was as good as ever then with top notch discussion. It's great today too.

There's also room for a #2 great gaming forum to compete, and the community here is what made it.

I do not get the companies behind this. GAF's popularity comes from its independance, the minute is bought the minute the community disintegrates and looks somewhere else, you would be buying a very expensive empty box.

I feel I'm missing something else, companies can't be that blind regarding just raw numbers right?

I'm almost sure that wouldn't happen. There would be losses, but likely some gains, too.

The fact of the matter is forums are a very easy and sustainable form of traffic. Any big site would be out of its mind not to want a big forum like GAF.

Yeah no.
He's never going to be a billionaire, but GAF doesn't need to pay writers like most content making sites, and a lot of members are constantly reading/refreshing so the volume of banner ads per viewer is likely much larger than most sites do to the dedicated nature of the community.

I get it. But GAF's members are a community far more tech-savvy and interconnected. I wouldn't be surprised if a GAF sale (regardless of empty promises of stability) causes a mass exodus.

The site is written a lot with the page hits it gets. He made the right choice. I'm sure he's made more than that off the site. PEACE.
