Old Sitcoms that still hold up? (Pre-90s)

I borrowed my dad's boxset of this a few weeks ago. It's really good.

James Garner is brilliant in it.

It's not a sitcom though, but it certainly has its funny moments.

Man, you're right. I read sitcom in the title, but I didn't comprehend it.

My new pick is Sanford and Son. Still hilarious!

The Cosby show. Watched the whole run just last year. Best family sitcom ever.

Another vote for Taxi. To those Posters who constantly bring up Jurrasic Bark as a tearjerker moment, Taxi has a dog episode that kicks the shit out of it.

Some great suggestions in here. Somebody said Soap! Holy shit yes. Brings back memories.

But where the hell is Barney Miller?

And Police Squad! (short run, but priceless)

.

almost all old English sitcoms hold up extremely well: Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister, George and Mildred, Man About the House, Till Death Us Do Part, Mind your language, Only fools and horses...they're still great fun

Mary Tyler Moore
Bob Newhart (as well as Newhart, but I like the first show better)
Dick Van Dyke
Are you being served (British) still holds up I think.

I love old TV shows and movies - it's like a window into the past, and I love them! When I ditched cable, the only channels I missed were TVland and TCM.

TBH, most stuff that is still shown on syndication is pretty good, imo. When I ditched cable, watching all the old stuff on the free channels was pretty entertaining.

I still like Mary Tyler Moore, MASH, I Love Lucy, the honeymooners, the flintstones.

Blackadder (Don't bother with the first season) will never cease being one of the greatest TV shows ever created.

I went through every single season of Cheers on netflix a year or two ago and that is still great.

Can't go wrong with Married with Children.

I bought the entire DVD boxset for quite a hefty sum sometime ago (in bits and pieces). Worth it.

It was made in a time of great social upheaval in the States, and it shows. Some of the shit they could get away with during that timeframe on primetime TV was simply incredible, although it was made when FOX was in its infancy and they were therefore allowed to push the boundries of what was considered acceptable on TV for ratings. The No Ma'am movement as portrayed on the show was pretty prophetic, and would later be called the MRA in current times lol.

One episode
was never shown on US TV during the original airing, thanks to this prissy lady who led a campaign against the show. Ironically, she only helped to boost its ratings.

Stanford and Son. Just recently started watching it for the first time. They really don't make em like that anymore.

The episodes I watched were excellent. Most standout was the one in which Redd
tried to beat the Guinness World Record for longest you can stay awake.

I love the DVDs too, but it's such a shame they had to replace Frank Sinatra's Love & Marrige by a cheap and generic song that vaguely sounds like it.

The Bob Newhart Show
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Odd Couple
Newhart
Cheers

In particular I would like to see The Odd Couple mentioned more in this thread. Tony Randall and Jack Klugman are just brilliant in it, and when it's firing on all cylinders it is some of the greatest TV comedy ever done. A clip from one of my particular favorites, How To Exorcise At Home

"So long, Sport!"

I used to watch so much Nick at Nite when I was a kid in the 80's that I kind of "grew up" watching old 50's and 60's sitcoms without even knowing it.

Mr. Ed
My Three Sons
Bewitched
The Patty Duke Show
The Many Loves of Dobbie Gillis
Get Smart
The Donna Reed Show
The Danny Thomas Show
Dennis the Menace

Then of course I would catch other shows on different networks like

I Love Lucy
Sanford and Son
Good Times

Stuff from the 80's that I watched

Cheers
Taxi
Night Court
ALF
Perfect Strangers
MASH
Married With Children
Family Ties

Now of all of those, I could probably only stand to watch the following...

Bewitched
Get Smart
I Love Lucy
Sanford and Son
Good Times
Cheers
Taxi
Perfect Strangers
Married With Children
Family Ties

Three's Company

My favorite show of all time. I could watch it whenever. My desert island show if you will...

Threes_Company.jpg

I can relate to this...

but yes

All in the Family
Golden Girls
Gilligans Isle
Night Court
Happy Days pre shark
Sanford and Son
Hogan's Hero's

All are still a good time
