Older School PC Gaming!

So I went back and installed some older games.

Thief 3 - Runs great on my x800 :) I need to get the high res texture pack.

Undying - This game is pretty cool, but the limitations of the tech is just killing it for me. it feels like I have to load every single room. but it has been fun so far. This would be awesome on UE3 :D

Pirates (new one) - This game is just fun to roam around and blow stuff up :D

Any one else going back and playing some older games?

I recently got a Pentium 100 laptop with Windows 98 [for some Uni stuff, I've been playing with old computers lately, and I can deal with a p100 computer ;)]

Been playing some DOOM 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Commander Keen, and Jazz Jackrabbit. Good times.

Though the sound always fucks up. Like in DOOM 2, if I play it, and then get out of the game, no more DOS based SFX will work. I remember this happening back then, but is there a fix?

I bought Secret of Monkey Island for $2.50, but it doesn't seem to like my Laptop. Doesn't play correctly when played normally [black screen], and chugs horribly when played in Scummvm :(

Thief 3.....is an older game? Pirates? What?

haha.. at first I thought they were talking about the olllllld pirates.. but I was wrong.. :lol :lol

Speaking of older gaming....been playing this privateer remake when WoW is down. :D

It was mentioned in another thread by someone else, but i'm mentioning it again because it deserves it.

Check it out here

It's a BITCH to get running on XP. Deus Ex, released only a year later, runs flawlessly on XP, but System Shock 2 will make you cry.

:(

All I did was open up Windows Task manager after I got System Shock 2 running, go to processes, right click on Systemshock2 on the list, click set affinity, and then set it to one CPU instead of two. Bam, works....sexually.

Still as brilliantly fun (and hardcore) as the first day.

Z2, while not a bad game, was a disgrace compared with the sheer awesomeness that was the original Z.

Any serious PC gamer should check it out.

Recently replayed some Command And Conquer: Red Alert.

Holy shit did I ever plunk a shitload of hours into this back in '97. Any you know what? Its still fun as shit today!

Even the first C&C is still effin' great. I beat it religiously at least once per year.

Talking about newer games, I really want to play Undying. Apparently the game was the coolest thing when it came out, but it bombed. How are the visuals nowadays?

It's still a good-looking game, although at the price of loading frenzy. As a Blood fan you owe it to yourself to play it - one-shot kills with the Scythe of the Celts never get old.

Its comparable to Blood (1, not the godawful abomination of a sequel)? Damn, I am SO tracking down this game. Blood was a fucking masterpiece, fuck the haters!

A lot less tongue-in-cheek, but just as vicious and inventive, and with added Clive Barker.

I loved SW, but Blood > (by a minimal margin) SW.

Id give SW like an 8/10, and Blood an 8.5/10.

I just loved the macabre humor, and horror film inspired level design of Blood.

Wrong. Blood was love.

Also, people interested on great old FPSs should try SiN. The graphics are horrible but it is still damn fun. I think I'm going to install it again.

Monolith (F.E.A.R.) did Blood. How awesome would a Blood 3 be on the F.E.A.R. engine? Of course, Monolith would need to re-learn how to properly design levels. Ugh did F.E.A.R. ever feature Halo 1 levels of awful, bland level design. It almost ruined the bitchin' gameplay. Almost. But not quite :D .

The last thing I was expecting to find in a thread called "Older School PC Gaming!" was references to Thief 3, Undying, and the Pirates! release from last year. Even Undying, which was released at the end of 2000, doesn't merit an "Older School PC Gaming!" reference.

For what it's worth, I'm playing Maelstrom.

Edit: until I remembered the save bug. Screw you, Syd Mead and Don Bluth!

Guess it's back to Meat Puppet, then.

Those are some of the games I played alot of when i was younger.

Doom
Duke Nukem
Dark Forces
Hexen
Heretic
Rise of the Triad

//end of thread

edit: played the s out of witchhaven also.

I know it's not old-oldschool, but I've been trying to trackdown a copy of Baldurs Gate for a week or so.

Also, Atomic Bomberman > all.

Baldurs Gate 1 is one of my most favorites of all time. Those cds are keepsakes for me now :D

Tyrian
Desert strike
Duke 3d
Doom
Doom II
Quake 2
C&C , RA1
Dune
Dune 2000
Shadow warrior

damn so many great games back then.

Edit : Nobody mentioned : WARCRAFT

Just fired this up 2 nights ago... I've finished it multiple times, but it's my favorite from that era:

Planescape: Torment

Not as old, but what an experience... I'm playing it again to get myself primed for COD2, which I've been totally lagging on getting started:

Call of Duty

I even installed Dune 2000, Red Alert and MechCommander 2 on my brand new comp. Great times.:) I really should install MechWarrior 2.

I had no idea that "older" implied a certain and apparently long period of time =P

Going back on topic, this night I'll start playing W40k: Chaos Gate again. I swear this time I'll beat it. I shouldn't click on these threads, I always look at my backlog and pick something to finish...

The older need for speeds kick ass to : especialy NFSII and III

Much more track variety then Most wanted and Underground!

I was going through some of my mom's old piles of things last night, and one pile was nothing but boxes to pc software... full throttle, sam and max, phatasmagoria, 7th guest, etc. The discs and the inserts were all gone, though... so I tossed the boxes too.

I did have it 'old school', but the games weren't really that old, so I changed it to 'older'. I didn't start playing PC games until '95.

I never stopped playing the original doom games, the community has kept it alive with great mods and it seems to still have a better and more active modding community than most newer games.

Older is older than old.

BUILD engine games were fun...LameDuke was a sick addiction for me

Undying was a damn near PERFECT game at the time...and suprisingly (for a old 3D FPS) the visuals still hold up.

I need to play some Descent 2...I played that game's multplayer like crazy (LAN)
