Now this is true old school PC gaming

I'm old. :lol

Or the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy game...

I remember dying to the Bulldozers or to the destruction crew 2524325235452 times.

Never mind finding Tea *AND* No Tea.

i'm going to complete my zzt game one day.

there's no reason chaos overlords shouldn't be on the ds with wifi, really.

One of the first games I remember playing on an Amiga computer was Shadow of the Beast by Pygnosis (now dead thanks to Sony). That was a fun game. :)

Heh funny you guys mention this, I just started playing some old Cinemaware games including Defender of the Crown and Lords of the Rising Sun. Also was checking out Romance of the Three Kings (the ORIGINAL) by Koei.

I still have a ton of old PC games that I love and have including:
Wastleland
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Bard's Tale
Pool of Radiance Gold Box
Duke Nuke Em

Don't have but still love:
Space Quest
Zork
Descent
Command and Conquer
Doom
Archon
Ultima 1, 2, 3

And a ton of Amiga and C64 games.

I'm right there with you Dr_Cogent. Back when there when any graphics PERIOD were amazing lol. And you were lucky if you got more than 3 colors.

Since we're talking fairly recent PC games, it doesn't get much better than Moonbase Commander and Startopia.

As for actual old-school PC gaming, X-Com and Darklands will never be topped.

Gold Box SSI Pool of Radiance to me is a true champion of PC gaming. tons of content and nuance. a superbly crafted game and the basic "engine" of the game as we would call it today was used and re-used for years. first computer game I ever bought, and that still stands as probably my best choice ever despite me being all of like 10 or 11 years of age.

Yeah I can't believe I forgot to mention X-Com.

try the archives (click on levels) they have pretty much every wad that you'd ever hear about in thier and it gets up dated everyday. If you are not sure what you want or are looking for something that you played when you were younger that was fairly big try the ten years of doom link and go to wad of the years. You'll find plenty of good stuff thier. :)

btw i highly recommend Action Doom, it's kind of like what you'd get if you mixed Contra, Metal Slug and Dooms first person environment.

It's a BITCH to get running on XP. Deus Ex, released only a year later, runs flawlessly on XP, but System Shock 2 will make you cry.

:(

It wasn't all that hard the last time around, just a matter of finding the right patch.

I remember buying the Decent PC demo on floppies at my local Babbages and adoring it, same with Rise of the Triad, easily the best multiplayer FPS of its time.

old school

I loved that game, even when I could be playing wing commander or whatever.

Dungeon Keeper, best ever. I still have that somewhere.

I need to get myself a 5.25" drive... to try out
Bards Tale
Arctic Fox
Silent Hunter
Dune 2000 was great, I loved that game.

*sigh*

Unlike some of you jokers, I'm actually playing old school games instead of just reminiscing. I've been playing Crusader on DosBox and trying (fruitlessly) to get System Shock and Carmageddon to run. I wish I could play SS because I never finished it back in the day. :(

I've never had a problem getting SS2 to run in XP.

Neither did I. One patch and a command string and that's it. It's running in XP. I don't see what the fuss is about.

Along with the Sierra games, Hardball was one of my first PC (Apple IIgs) gaming favorites, remember when Accolade was a major company

that game was great

I played the shit out of that game... but I think I liked BRE/SRE more (especially the versions that were networked).

You need a special patch/fix that's floating around the web, I got it working that way.(there's also the gphx upgrade mod, some may need it cause those gphx look seriously dated nowadays.)

Sort of old school, but it's sad to say my first introduction to PC gaming, when I was a kid, was Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego. I think it was the only time I ever enjoyed an "educational" game besides the Oregon Trail; especially letting my conastoga wagon crew die of the white man's pox or drown trying to ford the river. Random bison maulings were the height of my PC gaming back then.

Not long after I made that post, I got it working both in DosBox and with VDMS.

Do you have a link to the upgrade mod? I've searched the net and all results seem to point to SS2 mods but nothing for SS1.

Speaking of which, I did find news of one mod that was apperently killed off by EA. Someone was trying to port SS1 to the Doom 3 engine.
