OldGAF - Defense of the Ancients

I'll be 38 by the time the next gen rolls around. Been gaming since Commodore 64(1982). I think the Commodore 64 retailed for around $599 back in 1982. To give a rough idea of that vs today's costs adjusted for inflation, that would be $1445.95

I have no idea how much it cost here in Finland in mid-80's, as it was bought used for my birthday from my father's co-worker's grown-up boy. The good thing was, that it came with a bucketful of games, and a floppy drive. So, I never had to fiddle with the cassette deck as most of my friends.

Nice! I can't find pricing for it back then in Finland, but I did find this for you my friend. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=gxia9G05-aA&desktop_uri=/watch?v=gxia9G05-aA

Turned 30 in April and started playing on the C16 and Amiga from my brothers. Such great times.

Some memories:
- The hours we tried to free up RAM on my dads 386 to play some weird Sherlock Holmes adventure game. It worked in the end, but the game wasn't even good.
- The smell of the SNES box, will never forget that!!
- Buying the PS1 with my hard-earned money from beeing a ball-boy at a local tennis event. What a shitty job, but the result was worth it.
- Playing FFVII in my brothers room (didn't have my own TV then) and boy, was he mad about the songs playing over and over again. :-D
- Playing Duke, Q2, Q3 over and over again on little LAN parties (have to do that again soon!)

I could go on and on.

33 here. Started gaming when I was really young on the ColecoVision. It wasn't until the NES that I was officially hooked. I have some fond memories playing the NES with my younger brother. Unfortunately he doesn't game anymore. Maybe it's for the best. He broke one my SNES controllers in a fit of rage playing Street Fighter II.

I am just into my 30's and I play Defense of the Ancients 2 all the time. But as an older gamer my tastes are refined (aka I don't fall for the AAA trap easily).

But seriously I plan to game as long as PC gaming is around. Consoles just don't do anything for me nowadays. And I would rather do something else entirely than ever boot up a mobile game. I am as excited as a kid at Christmas for a lot of the games coming from Kickstarter (Grim Dawn, Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, Torment, etc.).

Well, i'm 32 and started out back in 1986 with the Atari ST. Some of my favorite games were Midwinter, Hunter, Deja Vu, Uninvited, Bubble Bobble, Mouse Trap and a whole lot of others. I remember my ninth or tenth birthday when my dad came home with a big box of pirated game floppies (i didnt even know they were pirated back then). There were about 500 disks in that box with an average of three games per disk. Holy shit i was in heaven, but somehow i managed to find time to meet friends and play outside too. Those were the days.

I remember enjoying games a lot more back then. Maybe i''m getting too old for this shit? I will probably buy the PS4 and see if that thing can bring back my interest in gaming. I got two kids as well and a job so i don't get a lot of spare time to play anyway.

Sorry for my shitty english, i'm from Sweden.

Edit: one game really wowed me this generation and that's The Last of Us. So awesome. The voice acting, animations, story, combat. Everything is top notch.

The PS4 isn't what you're looking for. Build a nice gaming PC and you will be pulled right back in.

As a matter of fact i bought one, maybe a month ago. A combined htpc/gaming (i5 haswell, gtx 680)pc hooked up to the tv. But so far only Cube World has caught my attention. Rogue Legacy seems to be right up my alley though, will probably check that out in the near future.

But wasn't everything better before? I mean which of todays rpg's come close to baldurs gate 2, fallout 2, planescape torment and so forth? It's just not the same anymore.

Really hoping that project eternity will be good, maybe that could get us some good retro style rpg's.

I remember the memory freeing process somewhat? Was the command somehing with himem? Or was it somethhing you did in the boot process (exclude different programs in the startup or something).

I also remember you had to go into the setup of every game and specify addresses for your sound card (dma, irq, etc)..

I'm 42.

Pong > Atari 2600 > Spectrum 48k > Megadrive > PC* > PS1 > PS2 > X360 > PS3

* Became my primary gaming platform.
You've never owned a Nintendo system? Dang.

I'm 24. Gaming became my big hobby around 2000, while in sixth grade. I remember reading the EGM cover story on the Xbox. Made my IGN account in January 2001 and then 6 years later, NeoGAF.

48 here. I think I'm one of the oldest.

Been gaming since pong.

Didn't we already have this thread a couple of days ago or has the Alzheimer's started kicking in already.

39...started for me on Asteroids cabinet in a corner store around my way. Didn't own a console until SMS. I actually had a C64 but never played any games on it. Unless you count the craps game I wrote

I'm 35 and have been playing games since Atari 2600, and roaming gaming message boards since 2000, so I seen 3 generations of console warfare debates on which games are or are not overrated, etc. One thing is for sure despite whatever criticism GAF gets I can say it s a cut above the rest. There seems to be a greater level of civility here even the most heated debates, which I like very much.

33...Started for me with Super Mario in 88 or so. I remember getting the first issue of Nintendo Power from somewhere.

32 here, born in 1980. My first gaming experience was the C64, followed by the NES, then Genesis, PSX, PS2, PS3

I have a collection of systems and games that is very important to me.

32 years old and I started with a Atari 2600. I also had a "gaming" computer in 1984 and by gaming I mean my cousin who was much older than me managed to rip a bunch of games (30+) to a Apple II.

Then it goes something like this NES, SNES, Gameboy, PC, N64, PC, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, GBA, PC, Wii, DS, X360, 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Maybe and I mean maybe a PS4 when it's cheaper. X180 isn't going to happen.

You've never owned a Nintendo system? Dang.

Me neither, and that goes for Sega as well. The PS1 was my first console, and the first system I bought myself. My father bought C64 and Amiga for me, and he never would have bought a device, that was meant purely for something as trivial (from his viewpoint) as gaming. He thought computers were more useful for learning, eventhough I used them almost purely for gaming, and some music making with Sound-/Protracker on Amiga. Although, he also ended up playing some games, like Boulder Dash, Tetris and Ports of Call.

31. First system I owned was NES. Played collecovision, pong home system and master system at my cousins house prior.

Wife and two kids under 3.

I've owned NES,genesis, Snes (late Gen), Sega cd, Saturn, ps1, n64, Dreamcast, ps2, GameCube, Xbox, 360, ps3, Wii, Wii u. Dreamcast on bought at launch or in first year.

Nice to see so many people who've started on the C64!

32 here and I began on the C64 then NES -> Genesis -> Gameboy -> Super Nintendo -> PC -> PSX -> N64 -> and began purchasing every system from that point on. I await the day I (hopefully) retire and could kick back and play through my mountain of backlog.

31, started back in the late 80s early 90s. first mario was the first game i ever beat. that last level was annoying as fuck w/o the internet or guides.

still gaming, probably always will until im physically unable.

38 with wife and two kiddies here. Wifey doesn't really play anything beyond old school Mario platformers, but we all play Kinect once or twice a week together (bowling in Kinect Sports is the fave, closely followed by Kinect Party). I game with both of my girls...mostly the Lego titles and driving games (both girls and I are making our way through Lego Batman 2 at the moment, and it's nice to be able to hand the controller off to whichever one isn't playing at that particular moment and watch them work things out together).

Started with C64 here, too. Still love gaming, but my habits have completely changed over the last decade or so. Nothing wrong with that. I just love being the gaming equivalent of the "get off my lawn" guy, talking about how much more difficult games were back in my day, and that the only reason all of these kids continually beat my ass in online games is that I don't have the time to play them like I used to. :p

Really stoked that we have another generation of consoles on the way. I've drifted away from Nintendo since the Gamecube era (athough we did pick up a Wii shortly after launch...it now sits in my oldest daughter's bedroom). Give me Xbone, PS4, and one or two must-have titles that'll have me wanting a Wii U...and I'll be one happy camper!

Very cool to see the other "mature" (ha!) in the thread here. Tip of the hat, gentlemen...and ladies, of course!

I turn 30 in just over a months time. It will also mark 25 years of gaming for me as my 5th birthday present from my parents was a Sinclair spectrum 128. Feel old.

Also worth noting that it was my son's birthday a couple of days ago and I bought him his first console, a 3dsXL. Didn't get it for me, honest ;)

I'm 21 and now surprised how relatively young I am on Gaf. I always knew the average age of gamers was around 35, but figured the active ones on Gaf were younger. Interesting.

Are many of you are on your late 30's or even in your 40's?

I'm 43. I started gaming on the Atari 2600 and haven't stopped since... I too expect to be gaming after retirement. My kids have been gaming since they were old enough to hold a controller and now they game on the PC as well.

Anyone remember the Finnish Tetris/Columns clone called Coloris on Amiga? It was fairly popular here in Finland.

Coloris is a computer game that was originally released in 1990 for Commodore Amiga. It was later ported to Atari ST.

The game play is similar to Tetris and Columns. Like in Tetris, blocks fall from top of the screen to a well. The blocks consist of three squares of different colours. The blocks cannot be rotated, but the order of the colours can be switched. If three or more squares of same colour are adjacent, they disappear, blocks above them fall down, and may trigger a chain reaction.

The game bears so much resemblance to the more famous Columns game that the developers did not dare to sell the game outside of Finland out of fear of legal action. The game was originally published by Avesoft, a distributor of freeware and shareware disks. The game received some popularity in Finland, however, and the reviews were positive.

Gameplay starts at 9:10.

Love the tune, that starts at 2:45, kicks into gear at 4:20. It reminds me a bit of Psygnosis' game music, and with that being said, I have to link the Shadow of the Beast theme here as well. ;)

23...I wasnt really not games until one day my dad took me to "take your kid to work day" a an unnamed auto company....anyway a guy had put DOOM on his work computer and made a level based on his house....absolutely blew me away

first game I ever owned was Kirby's Dreamland 2 with a gameboy for Christmas one year...basically click my tag for the rest of my gaming history, then feel free to call me a schill for Sony or something :P

37. Started with Game&Watch, then SVI 328, C64/128, Amiga 500, PC, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, and every console after that.

1981 (32)

The main route for me was

Spectrum / Amiga 600 / Amiga 1200 / PC / Gameboys Colour-Micro-SP / XBOX / 360 [All] / PC / Next Gen

still have it, still works :)

I turned 31 this year and I've been gaming since I was 4 years old. I have two older brothers. one is 4 years and the other is 6 years older than me so we got a Nintendo when I was really young. I couldn't really play Super Mario on our NES but I could play Track Meet with the power pad. Mario came around though and I was 7 the first time I beat it without dying.

42. Started with the 2600 and have owned almost everything including the 3DO and Jaguar. Mainly PS3 and PC right now. Looking forward to the PS4 this year and maybe Xbox one later. If they ever release that Zelda game I'll probably buy a WiiU as well.

Turning 43 in a few months. Started sometime in 1977 when my dad, who was in the Navy, bought me somekind of Pong 'console'. I remember it being orange and that my brother and I had too turn the sticks, just like a steering wheel, to hit the ' ball'. Looked rubbish, but I loved playing it. Playing games really took off when I got a 2600 and a Vectrex. By the time the C64 arrived I knew gaming who stay with me forever. There was a short period though ( 1989 until 1993 ) that I was so busy with my study that I hardly played games at all, but nowadays I can't live without. Being a gamer some years ago was quite lonely for me. All my friends had different interests and thought gaming was for geeks or children. Now, gaming is all around and when you say that you spend your evening playing games or reading about them isn't considered weird. I love playing with my kids now, showing them that dad still can pull off some tricks when playing SMG together. Makes me feel like a kid again, and that feels great tbh.

Almost 36 and I have been gaming since the 80's. I have had just about every console and thoroughly enjoy playing still. Been a bit tough over the last couple of years and right now I'm back in school so my game time is very limited. To give some weight to this I have been sitting on The Last of Us since release and have only played about an hour.

I guess you mean this one. You have a good memory sir :)

Anyway, yeah, me 40's too. And to me it's getting weirder and weirder getting dragged into system wars..

Oh, and I just noticed; no one in this thread is on my ignore-list, heh..

I'll turn 47 next this coming Thursday. First console was Intellivision, first computer was an Apple][+, and I was an arcade rat as well. I still get excited about new games, consoles or upgrading my computer!

27, turn 28 in a month. Been gaming since 1989. I was 3 or 4 when I got my NES from my grandmother (it was my uncle's, but he was permanently disabled in a car accident).

I still remember the day my dad came home from a trip in the Army and brought home Super Mario Bros. 3...greatest day of all time.

I remember getting a SNES right around launch too, Super Scope bundle. My parents got it on the Air Force Base where my other grandma worked on a Christmas trip to California...man that thing was mindblowing. Super Mario World was incredible.

So I've been gaming for 24 or 25 years. No intent to ever stop, either. Real life has gotten in the way the last few years...I went to law school, and now I'm prepping for the bar exam, and after that I'll be moving to Hawaii to work, but otherwise I fit it in when I can.

Finding a lot of nostalgic feelings in indie games. Super NES was the hallmark of my childhood (and playing basketball and jumping on our trampoline).

Oh, and my consoles:

NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 2, Gamecube, Xbox, PlayStation 3

Handhelds: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Nintendo DS, NIntendo DS Lite, PSP, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita

I won the Xbox at a Columbus Riverdragons game (NBA D-League Team) when it launched, and then got the Gamecube for Christmas a few days later. Man, we annihilated some Super Smash Bros. Melee on that thing. What a launch title! And those cheapasses at the game said "win and Xbox" -- it was literally AN XBOX. No controller in the box, no cables, no nothing.

I'm hitting the big Four-Oh next month (40).

Been gaming since early 80's with Nintendo Game & Watch, then ZX Spectrum, then consoles.

I spent my life in the arcades of London. Well 1986 to around the year 2001. Gradius/Nemesis to King of Fighters 2000. Still pop into the arcades now and again.

Now I spend my gaming life playing iOS games, PS3, Vita, Wii U, 3DS, and on the Mac.

Games that have had the most profound affect on me:

Super Mario Bros series
King of Fighters series
Ninja Gaiden series (The modern ones)
Team Fortress 2

42 - having been playing games all of my life.

love the fact that I can afford what I want to play regardless of the platform, and usually have the ability to stop playing a crappy game regardless of the entry fee.

Also love the selection now. Have remembered the rise of PC gaming and the initial limitations with regard to selection, I'm glad at the sheer number of games in production and in existence.

one of my first games: bilestoad

why didn't they re-make that one - axes and floaty disks - mmmm.

Btw, what is OldGAF playing?? Getting so many hours into Rogue Legacy it's ridiculous. Oh man.

Just finished The Last of Us, which drew me in like Silent Hill 2 over a decade ago. Tried XCOM, but it didn't really pick my interest. Returned to ME3 multiplayer after a long break, but even that felt kinda uninteresting. Perhaps it's a post-TLOU effect, where nothing else seems worthwhile?
