Omni Treadmill Kickstarter

I will be buying this day 1, same with the Rift. Even if it supports only a handful of games, it is worth it for future tech gaming.

As a financial investment is the way I'm looking at it. It will garner some support and eventually it will collect dust in the land of forgotten hobbies, the garage.

Are you sure "collecting dust," "forgotten hobbies" and "in the garage" is an accurate description describe some of the other things you lumped in with the Oculus and Omni? Kinect and Kinect-like functionality went from peripherals to basic features of two consoles, for example.

"I don't like it." = TOTAL GARBAGE, ABSOLUTELY DOOMED TO FAILURE seems like a bit of a leap.

On top of that what's the point of having the ability to comment on things if all that's going to happen is we sit back and fellate the thing in the OP?

Never said this, just wondered if you really got such a huge kick out of vocally disliking things.

No I just having a conversation.

I think people saying this is going to great is a stretch you see we are on opposite end of the spectrum. If you look at user data of the move and kinect I think you'd see a different story the incorporation on these things is more of a hope of getting something back in expensive R&D.

I'm feeling it's a bit early to go hog wild on VR accessories just yet, gonna skip this one.

Shipping is expensive too. And I have weird feet so I would worry about the shoes.

It's not much of a conversation when you're just saying it's gonna suck without much in the way to back up your assertions.

But I get it - tech like this needs some skepticism. There have been plenty of much hyped failures in our past.

But having experienced VR first hand and simulated motion in VR... I can say it's an extremely compelling experience; much more so than motion control/games have been before it.

as a big rift evangelist, I'm sitting this one out for now. I'm waiting until I can get testimony from people I trust, and until I see how it all works together with VR. how does it not get all tangled up as I turn around? etc.

one day, but not today.

Went ahead and got the fully built kit. I love playing TF2 with the Rift though it feels odd when you're sitting down. You feel like you're full height, but your brain also realizes you're sitting down so I can't get fully immersed.

My concerns are jumping and how durable the machine is. How heavy is it and can I move it easily? How well are all the peripherals going to work together? It's something worth gambling on. VR is where true next gen lies.

Man, some of you people are jaded as all get out. THIS is next gen to me. Graphics can only take you so far, its what developers can do to immerse me in a universe that truly makes for a next level experience for me. This is why WiiSports was such a hit. Despite it's simple art style and graphics, what it made you feel convincingly for the first time in your home with a videogame system was unprecedented.

This will be my first time contributing to a kickstarter because more so than the promise of this device, I love the practicality of it. I will be buying this and the occulus rift when they hit the consumer level because immersion in a game trumps graphics when it comes to experiences that stick with me these days.

As someone who's fully prepared to get a Rift when it hits consumer level, this seems like a great idea but at this point there are too many concerns for me (wire management being the primary one).

I'd most likely splurge on this thing in a second (my Rift should be shipping in the next week or two WOooo) but I don't think it will work out too well in my little apartment. Not even because of space but because of noise (I live on the 2nd floor). Would probably drive the people downstairs insane.

I'm almost certain this will be as niche as it gets in the end, too much hassle to be mass market.
On the other hand this is really good for aerobic workout and would greatly enhance ''immersion''.

Goodbye PS4, I'll be using the money for this (backed!). But if the PS4 blows me away at E3, then maybe getting that second job isn't such a joke..

I'm really of two minds on this. On the one hand, the possibilities are amazing. But on the other hand, unlike the Rift, I'm not sure it can deliver on the expectations. The huge shipping fees to Europe make it easier for me to decide to sit this one out -- for now. Hope I won't regret it.

I honestly do feel this is more of a novelty whereas the Rift might actually catch on, but the combo of those with something like Skyrim would be enough to make it something I'd really want. Nevermind that the amount of time you spend walking would turn it into great exercise.

EDIT: Haha, I didn't see they WERE showing it off with Skyrim.

I hope they license out the tech to a European company so we can all join in the fun.

I do wonder how noisy it is. Maybe not suitable for late night gaming.

Its a cool idea. Just because it "works" doesn't mean it will be a lasting thing you want to use while gaming though. I can see this getting old very fast unless the "walking" really does feel like you are walking and not just doing another series of muscle movements to make the screen move.

Like in Skyrim - this could be mind-blowing for 2 hours or something, then I don't think I'd ever want to do it again instead of just using a controller.

Well, I think Skyrim would still work just because it'd be sort of like a VR stroll. But that's why it'd be one of the only games I'd want to keep going back to for, I know I wouldn't want to keep playing TF2 or something this way.

not interested, I mean this type of innovation it's great but I don't really care. I only need good games.

See I'm exactly the opposite. I'm kind of done with the AAA gaming scene. The only way I'm coming back is with something that revolutionizes the experience. The latest "ITS CITIZEN KANE" naughty dog release is not cutting it for me anymore in gaming.

Yeah this seems like a fun thing to try at the arcade but not something to use all the time.

Imagine the amount of people who'll lose weight using this thing. This product can really help with the sedentary lifestyle that's causing some of us to become unhealthy. I'd buy like 4 of these mofos if I had the money. I need to finish school quickly.

Ok, let's do it.

400 is not that much if you consider what this means.

And the fact that it's already been backed in a couple of hours is great.

Shipping costs for Europe are insane; but it's a 50+kg shipment.

It's damn tempting.

I think this would be incredible with the OR but I will wait for the final retail releases for both as I don't want to pay a good amount of money for "Beta" hardware. I want the early adopters to buy it, test it, and refine it before I start to open my wallet.

If this and The Rift really take off (ie: games that work REALLY well with them) I will, without hesitation, be purchasing my first gaming PC.

Yeah like the Rift, I'm glad people put up money for this. I'll buy the full version day 1.

This is pretty interesting. Requiring specialized shoes is my only caveat as I'm very particular about shoes, I can't buy a pair without trying it on first. :P Not that I would spend money on this, anyway. But still, pretty interesting stuff.

I'm not from Mexico, but those shipping costs are ridiculous. Why does it cost 4 times more to ship to a neighboring country than to ship to Europe?

Looks like they have a special sole you can nail onto a shoe, so I'd just get a cheap comfortable pair of sneakers for this and call it a day. That must be a fairly small investment relative to the rest of the damn thing.

Looks like cool technology, but I have ZERO interest in walking around while I'm playing a FPS or RPG like Skyrim. Seems like the novelty would wear off quick. They also looked unintentionally hilarious in those youtube vids.

Can't wait for this stuff to be perfected. Honestly though while the Rift can be something I use maybe as often as a normal TV I can't imagine ever using a treadmill as often. The physical stress would just be too much for the kind of games I want to play. It would be a event device. Maybe play a game like Half Life an hour a day. It would take a real holodeck with insanely detailed Sherlock Holmes mysteries where I can sit down, walk, run, or do whatever I want to get my super excited to do this more than an hour a day.

I know this is quite a bump but I didn't know if it warranted a thread. I just saw Omni on NBC's Shark Tank. They bombed. : (

Interestingly Mark Cuban seemed in the know about video games/VR. They used the Occulus Rift in the demo and talked about it a good amount. Pretty interesting.

The sharks brought up some interesting points about the viability of a product like this. I'm really curious whether this will succeed. My guess is no. It will most likely spawn something much more interesting though. Maybe an experience like Laser tag instead of an at home device? Not really sure.

Able to recap some of the stuff they said?

I certainly like the idea of an omni-treadmill too... but I've repeatedly stated in threads about the stuff that it's for a very niche market. Even when VR becomes a big thing, the treadmill still has some considerble barriers to overcome for some slight benefits.

The main thing the omni treadmill (of any sort) has going for it, is it seems to be the intuitive answer for providing full body motion controls.

But that's only because no one's bothered to properly integrate a good camera based full body motion system into VR yet - the trick is to get virtual feet synced up with the up and down motion of your own feet accurately. But that would require a game's movement to be designed from the ground up for VR.

I'm sorry but this is absolutely hilarious. The player looks like a hamster running in his little treadmill.
