Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

State of Emergency had a bit of hype surrounding it. It was published by Rockstar and had a pretty big marketing campaign, even getting on the cover of EGM in 2002. I think people thought it was going to be more like GTA, at least that's the impression I got from the previews and it sort of just fizzled when it came out.

It had a sequel four years later but by then, no one cared. I don't think Rockstar even published it.

I still love it, but Bioshock Infinite was quickly forgotten. The Last of Us and GTA V releasing in the same year didn't really help its chances. lol

I think the PC version of this game was apparently pretty good? I know so little about it.

Played it, completed it, didn't like it (PC).

It was all fake hype generated by huge marketing budget and a lot of people called that out even at the time.
No one gave a damn about the game and the very little true hype it had it was because Xbox One players were desperate to have an AAA exclusive which is biggest reason most of the titles on this thread fall in this category (it's the "InsertGameOrConsoleHere" killer!).

I was excited for the game itself and I never owned an Xbox One.

I was hyped for a new game from the directors of the old Call of Duty games, and it was promising everything I wanted in a game.

I didn't play it cause my PC couldn't run it, and when I finally bought a PC that could 1.5 years later, it didn't have a big community anymore.

Titanfall 2 though? I've played that campaign twice, love it love it. Exactly what I wanted as a successor to Call of Duty.

Fade to Black (DSI, 1995), sequel to the legendary Flashback, was heralded as a technical gouraud-shaded marvel and previews were very promising. It seems to have been mostly forgotten.

did the last guardian was that hyped?
It was a meme for sure but I don't think it was that hyped beyond the people who usually like that kind of games, who probably loved it and will remind it fondly.

You're crazy.
We remember the vagina

This sounds like a wild thread I obviously missed out on; I'll have to do some search-digging.

Regardless, I meant more I don't think anyone in the general public remembers Geist was a game, not so much the GAF-bubble. GAF never forgets.

Never tried to play that game. But why did it get such a negative feedback. I remember before launch everyone was excited
Too hyped, a prerendered "gameplay" trailer with stuff not available in the game, too vague and/or false statements from the devs regarding content.

It's still a great game though and lots of stuff has been added since the launch, if you like exploration, mining, crafting, farming and space in general you should totally check it out. I'm roughly at 230 hours now and it's certainly not completely forgotten if you check the ARG discussions. Something big is coming in the next update within 2 weeks or so.

A game being forgotten doesn't mean it's a failure. Where did you get that conclusion from?

The Last Guardian was my top 3 GOTY in 2016, I loved every second of it from start to finish. But after a week or so I already forgot about it. There isn't much to talk about anymore as there's no multiplayer and DLC for the game. It's a one and done game. It's a fantastic game but I'd agree that it's already been forgotten.

No offense, but that is a pretty shitty way to view this medium. A great movie or book or album should stay with the viewer/reader/listener for years - maybe forever - if it has an impact. Look at Ico and SOTC - we are still feeling their reverberations 16 and 12 years later. The lack of multiplayer or DLC has nothing - absolutely nothing, less than nothing - to do with how long a game stays within the consciousness of the player. If this is the attitude that the gaming community has towards the works that our leading creators produce, then we don't deserve games like TLG.

It was flawed, but still somewhat solid. The biggest thing that squashed the game was Phil Hartman's death close to its release.

Sadly I never played it myself. I wanted that and Rascal so much :( Don't think either of those two really became all that popular in Europe.

The last story

I remember people fighting for that game and it came and went. Xenoblade took the spotlight as the strongest of the three so we've all forgotten about it.

but..... it wasn't fake hype at all. once the infinity ward thing happened and respawn was formed, there was a ton of immediate interest over what they would make, and whether it could compete with the beast they created at IW. for whatever reason, the community and interest fizzled after release, but it wasn't manufactured hype like Evolve or something

It sold 10 million. Fizzled is an odd word.

Spore for me, without a doubt. Was VERY hyped for it, played it for a couple of hours and really disliked what I played, never touched it again.

Hasn't even come out yet but I'd say Red Dead Redemption 2.

The total radio silence and delay didn't help at all.

Rockstar need only release another trailer, or even some screenshots, to recapture the hype. Not sure what kind of protracted discussion you were expecting when we're only seen a 90 second teaser (last year) and received no official details about the gameplay. Undoubtedly, the game is going to be huge and hyped to hell and back before it drops. Also, given Rockstar's track record, the game is likely to be pretty damn memorable.

Oh, and I'm not biased when it comes to Rockstar at all. :p

I actually beat that game

can't remember anything about it other than the blue sparks that came off the assholes that refused to die

Who remembers Blue Dragon?

I feel like this and Lost Odyssey were pretty hyped up during the 360's early days of Japanese support, but LO seems to be the one remembered the most and BD is mostly forgotten.

Remember playing the demo. Combat was slow and the framerate was noticably bad

I remember being so excited for Brute Force. My buddy and I bought copies and we played 4 player coop link cabled. We had a good time, but it wasn't as good as we were hoping. Great thread OP.

My pick - King's Quest 8: Mask of Eternity. It's still remembered by adventure game fans and anyone familiar with the series, but it certainly did not live up to the huge hype it kept getting in InterAction Magazine or any of the other enthusiast press articles of the late 90s. Was supposed to "redefine" adventure games in a post-Tomb Raider era when Sierra was really struggling to stay relevant, but unfortunately it ended up essentially killing the series on a down note. Had clunky mechanics and barely much of a connection to the previous King's Quest games, too.

I got this on the same day as Quest for Glory V and ended up playing the heck outta QfG (a divisive game in its own right) and very little of Mask of Eternity.
