Only 80k PS3s for Japanese launch?

Beware PS3 fanboys. Regardless of Sony's "incompetence" to deliver hardware, you must not jump ship to the 360 or Wii. Traitors will be executed.

You are ****ing insane if you think Sony is going to muster that...

why? Sony have said a million per month. Factories are close to, or in, Japan. So they can restock Japan more easily and more quickly than the US.

So most of the initial stock looks set for the US, and will have to tide them over for a while, perhaps with a few big restocks towards Christmas. But they can roll them out in Japan more regularly, perhaps weekly.

Because they haven't met a single PS3 target to date.

Hell ... they could launch the last week of December in Japan.

Japan doesn't really celebrated the 25th of December, nor is there a Thanskgiving week rush either. Their big gift giving week is the week of New Years.

Why they're hellbent on splitting up their November allocation between the US and Japan is beyond me. Has Square Enix or someone else given them a kick in the ass behind the scenes? The price drop for Japan is curious too, since they'd almost assuredly sell out of their initial allotment. Are they that scared of Nintendo? The price is obviously hurting their bottom line looking at recent financial reports.

I was actually just making a witty reference to the DS/PSP timing, but eh.

Why bother with launching with such meager numbers, delay it till spring with more units are available and can make a bigger impact. Wii sports and warioware waggle are the only things going for wii until mario comes out. They wont lose that much ground to nintendo for launching later.

Has Sony talked about how many they plan to have WW by the end of the year? All I've heard is a "target" of 2 million. However, when they put it like that, it makes me think they're leaning far more towards not hitting that "target". If any of you are around businesses enough, you know they would phrase that MUCH different if they were more sure they would get close.

wtf ? heard of Zelda....?

Isnt zelda behind warioware, training games, animal crossing, pokemon, and mario in sales potential? Im pretty sure its dropped to second tier. What were minish cap's sales numbers?

So what your saying is BOTH Zelda and (online!) Pokemon Wii are cancelled? :o

Also, comparing sales of a handheld gba Zelda against a full blown console Zelda in development for almost 4 years and on 2 systems, 1 of wich as a launch title doesn't make sense to me.

Is the PS3 that hard to produce? O_o they either start pumping their factories like crazy once the console is launched, or they are gonna get trounced. And let's hope that there aren't defective PS3 a la 360...

For the record, I've always thought that this avatar animates too fast and loses effectiveness as a result. Particularly, I would slow down the portion where the camera zooms in on the text. But maybe I'm just retarded.

PS3 Q&A
A handful of questions answered.
by Anoop Gantayat

October 30, 2006 - Sony has posted a question and answer feature at its official Japanese PlayStation 3 site. While the feature doesn't answer the one question we're really wondering -- where can I pre-order the darn thing!? -- there are a few points of interest, which we've translated below.

Q: What's the PS3 system color?

A: The current model is Clear Black only. We're looking into future color variations.

Q: How much power does the system consume?

A: At most, about 380 W (60GB and 20GB)

From an IGN article.

Perhaps they really SHOULD delay it? Why risk pissing people off even further? They aren't going to get any farther behind Nintendo by launching 5-6 months later than they would if they can only generate 80k for launch.

I mean, they are guaranteed to have 100% sell-through for the first couple years. They just need to pump 'em out quicker. Give them more time to get more games for launch. FFXII should carry the PS2 for Christmas.

Delaying it would piss people off. Having shortages at retail will give the impression to most that the PS3 is in high demand. On the other hand, announcing another delay could shake consumer confidence further.

What's been the smallest Japanese console launch to date so far? How is this 80,000 looking in comparison? Just curious to know.

The 80k PS3 launch could perhaps be the smallest launch ever:lol

Xbox 360?

Xbox 360 had more units available on launch day...

No i'll rephrase it, Xbox AND Xbox 360 had more units available on launch day.

EDIT:

This is pathetic Sony, really... The supreme mortification would be not a single PS3 games not even apparearing on the top 10 media create chart this November... which might happen...

I figured there was a catch. But did 360 actually sell 80K on that first day.

If they only launch with 80,000 units.................can we even say they launched at all?

Seems more like the Saturn's pre-launch idea only this isn't intentional!

This makes me wonder if they are going to come up short in NA, too.

I don't see a reason why they would reduce Japan's numbers before reducing the NA numbers. Dropping to like 360k from 400k for launch isn't as bad as going from 100k to 80 k (admittedly those numbers are pathetic already). So I guarantee that the NA launch numbers will also be reduced... how come GAF doesn't have a sad face to use?

Wow only 80k Ps3... If that's true I'd almost expect to see bloodbaths over in japan when the system is launched as people fight over the scant quantities available.

At this point I seriously wonder why they are even bothering to launch in that region right now. They would be better served consentrating all there systems in one region due to the limited supply of them they will have.

Better to have 500k (or so) for North america and then launch later in Japan when you actually have the numbers to back yourself up then shot yourself in the foot in both regions at once.

Oh well I'm gald I'm not in the race for one at launch. By the time I have the money to actually buy a Ps3 there will actually be enough available for me to easily pick one up no worries.

:lol In related news Peter Moore laughed and said Japan already had their Price drop, and Microsoft is raising the price of the Blue Dragon Bundle!:lol

Now that they've sold pre-orders I'm pretty sure they're past the point of no return.

No doubt. What I didn't make clear was that they should have delayed it before E3. Imagine what the difference would be if the E3 disaster never happened and instead they only had to deal with a delay. All they would have had to do is justify the delay (brue ray) and the bad press might have actually gone in their favor. Also, they would've allowed a HUGE Christmas season for BR to take hold here in the states. I'm only now seeing ads for HDDDVDs and BRDVDs.

If they had a bit more foresight they might have thought of that. Then again, I'm not paid millions of dollars to control that behemoth of a company. Maybe they know something I don't.

I still don't think a 6-month lead from Nintendo would have translated to that big of a lead. Now, though..Nintendo seems like they're gaining momentum and that they'll have millions of Wii available for launch. They're going to get a huge jump on Sony, moreso than if Sony would have delayed, because now...people will be going to the store LOOKING for a PS3 (rather than staying home waiting because they know its not out until next year), and instead will buy the cheaper alternative to satiate their children (or themselves) until they can secure a PS3 for themselves.

Honestly, we're seeing two very smart companies compete for Japan. I love the idea that each of these move have tactical precision and will have future impacts for their consoles. Interesting shit.

Where did you get that from? A lot of people misinterpret what the 360 really uses. The only way to know is to actually test them once they are released. The 360 was tested and it hangs around 160. We won't know about PS3 until it's released and tested.

What would be the point? PS3's would sell out completely no matter where they launch so I don't think it matters if they allocate more to a certain territory. This isn't like the 360 where Japan had a whole bunch of units sitting on shelves where they COULD have been sold in NA.

A paper launch is good for PR, and we know Sony uses PR spin for everything its worth.

This news must not be sitting well with 3rd parties that pushed titles for launch. Honestly this whole thing just makes me believe that Sony was in no way ready to launch at all this year. Low shipments plus a questionable launch lineup, no HDMI 1.3 truly available to anyone on a mass scale, etc.

But they have to launch. They cannot give MS and Nintendo a free Christmas this year. Although at this point, it's strictly about presence, and not volume.
