Opinion: Killzone 2 has the best gun feedback in any game released since last gen

I think Killzone 3 did a brilliant job, not just with just the feedback of the guns, but the explosions. I don't think there's been a game I've played where it felt like you were being pinned down more than in KZ3, made firefights extremely intense

Killzone 2 is the most satisfying FPS I have ever played. I still remember the COD noobs getting slaughtered and complaining because Killzone 2 is not a twitch shooter lol.

Haven't played Killzone 2 but it can't be better than Max Payne 3's gunplay. That felt so good.

Yeah, Killzone 2's general feel was great (with, yes, some lag) but it was definitely bested by Max Payne 3 in the weight/inertia/general glee of shooting department.

Yeah, i agree. Didn't quite like the gameplay but the gun feedback both visually and sounding was unmatched, maybe even to this date. Using the grenade to trow people in the air and the shot them with the M82 rifle. It should have a slow motion mode because the animations is just so good.

100% agreed

This and Warhawk are the only multiplayer games from last gen I still think about all the time. Completely different but both SOGOOD.gif in their own way. But you know some people didn't like it and need all their FPS to have the same twitchy controls so fuck it throw it out the window.

Killzone 3 was very watered down though, they caved into the pressure :-(.

Red Orchestra, Arma, Insurgency, etc make KZ3 look like babby shit in this particular regard

It had the best of any game I PLAYED last gen.
Best gun feedback, and hit detection
killzone2-1.gif

still uses hit boxes, doom 3 from 2004 here is more accurate actually.

MP3 would be such an excellent game if Rockstar actually let us shoot anything for more than 20 seconds. You jump out, headshot a few dudes in bullet-time, and then a cutscene of Max Payne shaving his armpits and walking through a door plays.

I completely disagree with you here.

I think Destiny has one of the worst gun feedback engines I've ever experienced. It feels very generic and uninspired.

Destiny enemy stuns plus head explosions is one of the coolest things ever. I'm not sure why you think it feels generic and uninspired, because I can't think of a single shooter that communicates enemy feedback as well as Destiny.

Hmm..TTK was fked up in KZ3 so that took out a lot of fun in the gunplay. Plus maybe I am biased but the atmosphere in KZ3 compared to 2 was such a let down that my opinion maybe soured a little on KZ3..

COD fans are the worst. I agree. Playing Warzone with those kind of players was superfun though. Seeing them run around like headless chickens :)

Surprised by the lack of Wolfenstein: TNO mention in this thread. The feel and sound of the assault rifles are just incredible combined with the reactivity of the enemies, both human and mech.

Metro 2033

Fucking no

As someone who's completed 2033 twice now, I can assure you, it's weapons aren't fun or satisfying to fire. Combination of marginal SFX and wonky aiming.

Now the reload animations are fine, but overall, good gunplay is something that game does NOT have unfortunately...

And yes OP, KZ2's gunplay/weapons are GOD-TIER

FEAR's shotgun takes a diplodocus-sized shit on every other game still. The submachinegun and the flechette rifle also put the fear of God into you.

Rainbow Six Vegas has my favorite gunplay of last gen and does it without having godawful laggy controls.

While I disagree, this post still made me laugh.

If it didn't have nasty input lag...

If Black counts, then I would go for that, but that was last last gen.

Destiny headshots are great with a number of weapons, but that's about the only thing it has, so nooooope.

ODST had some of the best Halo feel, and that puts it up there.

Timeshift had the most satisfying shooting, and Lost Planet/Fracture deserve a mention of TPS are allowed.

FEAR's shotgun takes a diplodocus-sized shit on every other game still.

FEAR's shotgun's strength was what it DID to enemies. The actual weapon itself IE: animation, look/design, SFX, are super... well like all the other weapons in FEAR, they're just sort of there. Hardly anything stand out.
It was all the post-processing of what they did. That's where the good feedback came from.

It has been a while since I booted that up. I remember enemies feeling like they were made out of paper mache.

I agree. Killzone 2 has the best gun feedback of any game I've ever played. I had a blast playing online. The campaign had its moments but was overall mediocre and salvaged by the sublime feedback of every gun. Don't know what happened to three. That game felt awful in comparison.

I disagree. Recoil (huge deal right there for any vidjagaem shotgun) and aiming/spread were also ON POINT.

That is a product of the game having merged 3rd/first person animation and models (i.e. one set). An interesting limitation though.

Yeah. Not understanding the Metro love. Thought the gunplay was just competent.

LMAO!

Yes, because having come from a 60FPS, non-lagged control scheme from the defining FPS of last gen to a mediocre one and complaining about it makes them 'CoD noobs'.

Disagree. Replayed it a couple of hours ago and I still think the combination of gunplay, dismemberment and enemy hit reactions (especially how sparks fly off when you hit armored parts) is amazing.

I guess I was too distracted by picking up guns off the ground that gave me like 7 bullets each to notice.

Killzone feels like a game trying to be realistic as translated by people who've been told how guns work by someone who was especially weak and had improper form and had never shot a gun before. I mean, even the camera height is really short.

Based on the kick, input lag, and player height, it seems like the game's trying to emulate the experience of a twelve year old boy who's never held a gun before in his life.

They weight issues is because planet helgahn is heavier than vekta and heavier than earth. That is only one of the myriad of issues on the planet and simply put it is not a nice place.

Wow at so many people praising Syndicate. I will try that game out one day.

My favourite ever no doubt. It was such a huge jump in terms of animation. Both gun animation and their hit response system.

Still we have so many shooters with really weak gunplay. Guerrilla Games pushed things forward and it's such a shame there was no such jump in shadow fall, in fact all the guns felt pretty crappy in shadow fall.

It's a real shame but at least KZ2 stands as a real classic for me. It's in my top 10 games of all time and will probably stay there.

KZ2 multiplayer was some of the best online gaming I ever did. Granted, the beta was a bit better. Still though, vanilla KZ2 MP was fucking fantastic.

Not sure if I agree with best in the generation but I do agree that its one of the best. I'd probably put max Payne 3 up there. People are mentioning rage and while I keep forgetting that game, it did actually have great gun mechanics. I'd also like to put gears up there as well. Especially gears 3. The shotgun is unmatched and the other guns feel amazing too.

A big, fat resounding NO. In fact it's one of the things I hate most about this franchise. Feels like I'm wading and shooting through a pool of tapioca pudding. Just no, man.

I agree, OP. Shooting in Killzone 2 was really amazing. But man, it took too many bullets to kill an enemy. It was probably the only complaint I had in this aspect.

I am so shocked haha. I didn't know this game was praised for anything other than graphics and sound direction. I thought the lack of enemy variety and gameplay made it very bland. I heard the Vita version was supposed to be good too and when I picked it up I could enjoy it, but felt it was the worst FPS I had played in a long time.

KZ2 >>> Vita version. But tbh I liked Resistance more.

Killzone 2 was a great game indeed! Its one of my most played games in the previos generation of console. The online was great.

Rage beats the pants off Killzone 2 and wonders why you're still talking about one of the worst shooters ever made.
Hm, dont think you think that many worse shooters exist?

Whats the difference between hit boxes and hit detection?

They weight issues is because planet helgahn is heavier than vekta and heavier than earth. That is only one of the myriad of issues on the planet and simply put it is not a nice place.

that's one way to rationalize the aim accelleration in the game but not the input lag which is the main contributor to the weighty sensation

The most satisfying shooting ever..

Also, fallen guys keep on getting hit responses, even the last killzone doesn't do it. (age rating or whatever the reason). It's very immersion breaking when fallen bodies suddenly become responseless.

Yeah, same. Soulless, joyless, just a third-rate CoD clone with cruddy controls.

I don't think there was anything interesting about the gunplay either, but then again, I think that Half-Life 2 has incredible gunplay and lots of people say that it's bad.
