Opinion: MGS3 is the greatest game ever made

The more of these games come out the more I dislike them. It just seems they get more and more stupidy with each release starting from 4. Thought the whole philosophers angle they shoved in 3 was stupid to. I think kojima lost the plot and turned into a hack.

I have faith mgs 5 will be decent though.

Haven't finished it yet, but storywise, it feels pretty weak so far (finished The sorrow last night). I guess I expected more cold war stuff.

I know kojima is a big pervert, but the first 2 games had silly perverted moments, but Eva took it to the next level.

The bosses felt out of place too. Heard it ends strong though, so maybe that will change my mind.

Gameplay wise though, this might be my favorite military stealth game.

Kind of bummed hearing this is the 'best game ever'. Does MGS4, PW, GZ not hold up gameplay/story wise?

I just learned that you can use TNT to blow up those food store rooms, and then that makes the guards in the area hungry. You can then plant food on the ground to distract them, or poisoned food if you want to take them out.

The game is *full* of crazy hidden gameplay elements like that, it's really something else. It's not my favorite game ever, but I absolutely understand why someone would hold that opinion.

MGS3 guards have the same vision as MGS2 guards and use the exact same cone of vision mechanic, there is just no radar to see the cone. When you are outside their immediate vision but still close enough to where they notice something, they will investigate just like MGS2.

Fun fact: MGS2 also has a sort of camo index. If you equip the enemy uniform, guards do not see you from as far away. I have tested this and it absolutely works.

To people who've never played Metal Gear before, it's obtuse and frustrating as fuck.

Source: Me. I desperately tried to get into this game like a dozen times but nothing clicked. Shame since all the hype it gets.

Yeah it requires a lot of lore knowledge to gain the full impact.

you can strike out story, characters, boss fights, and humor/charisma from that list for me. theyre not bad, but ive never been a fan of Metal Gear's brand of story telling.
i still think its a pretty good game, though.

I would say here is no better experience in gaming then MGS3. So much brilliance and memorable moments contained in one game it kinda puts everything else to shame. There may be 1 or 2 that equal it but nothing quite as ingenious.

10, 9, 4, and 2 I would include on my top ten probably. My opinion of all metal gear games though is that they aren't very good at all. In fact I've hated all the ones I've played.

4 retcon a bunch of stuff but the gameplay is good since it's an evolution of 3. PW was a PSP so it's structured like one but I really like it because it has so much content. I think the story was fine but some people hate it.

GZ is on a whole another level with gameplay compared to the rest of the series.

Didn't MGS3 win GAF GOTY twice or am I thinking of another game?

4 did.

Not saying you are wrong to feel that way but that is a very strange opinion considering the story is fairly standalone and removed from the events of the main series (especially before MGS4 came out) and a number of its gameplay mechanics including manual caamo change, hunting, and manual healing are not found outside of it.

If the camo/cure/backpack menus loaded instantly I would have zero problems with MGS3. That said, easily my favorite metal gear, and easily in my top 3, though 2 still holds a special place in me heart.

Opinion: MGS3 is one of the worst Metal Gears simply because the gameplay does not work with the controls. They evolved the gameplay without even thinking about the controls and what results in that game was a disaster, in my opinion.

I preferred MGS2 and MGS4 in terms of gameplay and the ludicrous nature of both stories.

For one, I found the whole "Survival Viewer" or whatever it's called to be really intrusive. I hated constantly changing camouflage. Jump into a lake, swim out of lake, burn leeches off. Get shot too much, remove bullets. One thing I DID like about the mechanics of the game was watching the health gauge slowly grow.

Story wise, probably the most cohesive and satisfying MGS story, but mostly because it's set in the past and is the starting point for the series. Really liked the bond-esque espionage feel the game had going for it.

There is no doubt MGS4's automatic camo change made things much smoother, but its worth pointing out that you never have to actually change camoflauge to beat the game outside disguises, not even on Extreme.

You can stick to tiger stripe and be just fine.

Camera control ftw

I can agree but not with this, fixed camera is better. The free camera makes the game easier and the level design was perfectly studied around a fixed camera, forcing you to use some mechanics like the peek behind a wall.
Personally I consider it an error in game design just as much as MGS1 -> The Twin Snakes was. They added this new feauture just for the sake of it, and because they could, without thinking about the consequences on level design (and not only that, just think that the enemies still had a fixed range of view iirc which put you way ahed of the game).

1 and 3 are the only entries that I don't find myself rolling my eyes at the storyline. For such a heavy cutscenes game 1 and 3 are the only games that deliver on that front imo.

Yeah, I responded there, too

Basically my biggest annoyance is that MGS's controls suck. They sucked in MGS2, but that didn't matter as much because of the environments. You were usually in a building and guards were a straight line ahead of you. Straight lines and corridors made sneaking easier with those controls and also made shooting easier with those controls. Then with MGS3 they didn't change a goddamned thing and put it all outside. Complete. Fucking. Disaster.

That and the camo thing was a nifty idea, but in practice it didn't work. I don't want to go into the menu every 4 seconds to change camo.

The story's cool and I like a lot of the ideas, but I'd rather go fucking play Portable Ops than MGS3 again.

I'd probably rank the MGS games:

MGS4 > MGS2 >> MGS1 >>>> Peace Walker >> Portable Ops > MGS3

It's good without a doubt, but the story is ok at best, while the script is downright abysmal. It's a similar issue with a lot of Metal Gear Solid games, where the dialogue is filled with repetition of the noun of the moment and exposition that is horribly prepared and stated before and after the fact, with a formulaic structure that is plain tedious. I wonder if it is just the way Japanese narrative and dialogue translates into English or something.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is one of a handful of games that can be called the greatest game ever made. Only misstep is its brief escort sequence towards the end.

I liked the escort part with Eva. The real bummer is the motorcycle chase that goes on a bit too long. You really notice that when doing buss survival mode.

How does MGS3 play on the Vita?

I've recently gotten a huge itch to re-play the franchise after finishing up Metal Gear Scanlon on Giantbomb this morning. From what I can remember, I enjoyed MGS3 the most but everything went over my head in terms of story and its implications to the Metal Gear universe. It'll be nice to RTTP and finally LTTP on MGS4.

Some of the CQC controls on Vita are God awful. It plays well for the most part though.

I can understand how your finger might have slipped, the 2 and 3 keys are right next to each other.

Snake Eater is near concentrated perfection as a videogame, I agree. But Sons of Liberty is just more than the sum of its parts in my opinion. It transcends the medium and there's something about it that feels so... like its just in a class all of its own. It still baffles me to this day.

Damn, you just blew my mind.

Maybe one of the greatest stories/plots for a game. Cinematic quality. But overall best game, not really. MGS1 is better in terms of gameplay etc.

MGS3 is so good. SOOOOOOO good. But phantom pain is looking to be even better so I'll hold judgement.

My MGS rankings go

MGS3>MGS1>Ground Zeroes (will be replaced and moved when PP comes out) > MGS4 > MGS2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Peacewalker

This is pretty much a RTTP. I play this game at least once or twice a year. It is that replayable to me.

NOTE THIS IS THE SUBSISTENCE VERSION. Camera control ftw

This is my top 10 list of games of all time:

10. Metroid Prime
9. Uncharted 2
8. LittleBigPlanet 2
7. Left 4 Dead 2
6. Super Smash Bros. Melee
5. Bayonetta 2
4. Resident Evil 4
3. Dark Souls
2. The Last of Us
1. Metal Gear Solid 3

I see a lot of this list came over the last couple of generations. :(
