Opinion: SNK was/is really ahead in characterization.

That wide stance looks OK when he's at a distance, but close-up the classic one they've recovered works best, and it's much less awkward to animate a jab from it.I like to think of the open stance as a part of Ryo's training that by now he's sort of outgrown.

I'll give you that one.

SNK's rebuttal was being even better at making Dan than Capcom themselves:
dan-supertaunt.gif

Very true, in MOTM and SVC Chaos. I believe Yuri is where SNK truly trolled Capcom.

Can't find the gifs, but over the years in KOF, they gave Yuri the hurricane kick, Ryu's shotgun kick, Ryu's shin-shoryuken, Ken's shoryu-reppa and Akuma's raging demon, on top of Kokugeryu-style moves. All that makes me want to request a Mrs. Karate from SNK.

I always liked Vanessa as a character:
Vanessa-neowave.jpg

She's one of the only female fighting game characters I can think of that's over 30, which is crazy that that is so rare and counts as a "matured" woman. Plus her favorite food is beer.

I think Capcom designs are more timeless. Just look at the amount of mushroom cuts they had to get rid of in the KoF lineup. Terry and Andy bogard still look like theyre from 1991.

I loved her design when I was younger. So damn cool and hot. But I just realized something while reminiscing.

Type-Moon kinda ripped off Vanessa with Bazett Fraga McRemitz.

Still irk'ed that she wasn't in the latest KOF or a new Garou. I mean they showed us this:

What a cocktease....

Still love her '98 incarnation the best. After 98 they kept making her moveset shittier and shittier.

Love the art here.

Also, Shinkiro's a god. Always used SNK style in CvS2 for his art.

Funny, I feel the exact same way about Street Fighter and moreso Guilty Gear.

Not trolling, totally serious especially the latter.

Thats cool, can you tell me what makes you feel that way. Different perspectives are good.

Also, not on in this thread, but I hope to see what you do like sometime.

Start a fighting game character design thread and you will find out.

Tekken is an example of good character design now? Yikes.

In general, Yes.

In comparison to King of Bland , hell yeah.

Also also, Shinkiro was and will always be terrible.

what is this crap.

Capcom fighters are the most popular ones, but SNK fighters were better, at least back in the day.

I think I was in love with KoF 99. My campus had an MVS with the game there, and there'd be like six of us there every day playing. Some great times.

To your main point, I agree completely.

God, I miss arcades. :(

The real joke on Capcom is that Yuri keeps experimenting with these moves, but usually tends to abandon them by the following game - she may not follow her father's lessons much, practically only using Kyokugenryuu's HaohShoKoKen, but she clearly doesn't think the SF moves are worth sticking with.

Hopefully this hasn't been mentioned, but SNK was one of the first to actually do something with the story in regards to "who won", and one of the first to kill off/hint about their deaths in bigger fighting games .

Bland, you say?

That's a 3-d render from 20 years ago. You can't compare the two. Leave Tekken out of this.

Now that I'm back at my computer, I thought I'd share some animation from SNK's best character ever.

Yea... The duck has the same haircut. If you don't like that, then I don't like you.

Arguable, but a strong case none-the-less.

...what's not to like?

Also, not sure this was brought up before, but what other company making fighters decided to give their fighters last names? I'd count that as forward-thinking.

I don't think comparing the character designs of two fighting game franchises is too much of a stretch, especially when people throughout this thread are talking about designs from games of varying age. And judging be recent sales numbers, a lot of people seem content leaving Tekken out of everything.

I wouldn't know if their characters are more attaching or not, but what always made me love SNK was the art in general, the mood, the music.. It was just something else.

This is about charisma and elegance!

Kof98-006.jpg

Yeah, Shinkiro is pretty godlike. One of my favorite artists, period.

As for thread, SNK was always my favorite as far as designs, characterization and overall feel. Everything was just so 80s/90s-cool.

... and KoF13 is the most stylish, visually impressive fighters this gen. /totallynotbiased

Mid 90s I couldn't get into any SNK fighter because I didn't like the art style, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people were on the same boat. I thought they all played well enough.

I really like it now though, and I feel super dumb since I've missed out on a whole lot.

This is my cab at home with a 160 in 1 MVS cart that has just about all the best snk fighters. Something about them SNK games that took a place in my heart in between the street fighters and bloody fighter like Mortal Kombat.

Mid 90s I couldn't get into any SNK fighter .

More than just the fighters, their shooters were great too. Not just Metal Slug. Shock Troopers, too. (I liked Shock Troopers 2 as well, but I know that's not a popular opinion)

The craft that went into their fighters went into those too.

Forgot to ask earlier. Who is decent in your eyes from SNK games?

Krizalid
Igniz
Duo Lon
shen woo
Terry
Ash
K
Geonittz
Ioiri
Tizoc
Nameless

I think thats it.

The guy's just here to shit on SNK/KOF every chance he gets.

King of Bland, really? That's on the same level as that Proper Iori/PSP2/SNK Suckmore shit (yes, I know that was someone else).

Or I just dislike KOF character designs.

To each their own, but Tekken's character designs are questionable.

What do you find questionable about them?

You picked some ones I agree with, but they're more than decent to me. Since KOF is sort of interconnected with AOF and FF to a degree, I wonder what you'd think of some of the Samurai Showdown and Last Blade designs.

If anyone wants to know what Village thinks of character design, look here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=529224 . I suggest not responding to him further in this thread.

....much rather stick to opinions on fighting game designs if it can be helped.

I think lank sonic is better.

I fail to see how what that has to do with KOF. or fighting games in general.

Or do you just not have anything productive to say?

Yes!

I was one of the few guys in my local arcade that wanted to played SNK fighting games to see the story of the characters, not to get the highest score.

SNK has always had better characterization than Capcom. Grew up on SNK and didn't get into Capcom nearly as much until later in life. First fighter I ever played was KoF94, then World Heroes by ADK, then Last Blade and have been a huge SNK fan ever since.

Playing Samurai Shodown 1 and 2 with someone else really felt like a duel, really great experience that between the sound, visuals, and mechanics I don't think's been duplicated.

One of the things I've always hated about SNK is their horrible character designs.

Nearly all their fighting game characters look bland and uninspired.

Only if you feel like it. I assumed you haven't played or seen many designs from those games, and probably jumped the gun there.

Samurai Showdown and KOF I have played, Lost Blade or whatever its called no not at all.

Well i will get ya a samurai showdown list, gimmy a sec.

Best LTTP antagonist ever created in a fighting game. (Sorry Genjuro)

Love this thread, So much memories!

That reminds me that SNK also has some of the best KO quotes. Iori's for one, but there are some other fun ones that always make me laugh. Robert Garcia, Shingo, Yuri, Mai, etc.

Franco Bash gets a special nod too, though. "AH MAH GAAAAAAAAAD!!!!"

Outside of the game sure.

but in terms of ingame characterization and world building Capcom doesn't hold a candle to SNK's efforts.

Part of what I liked is that in promo art and game endings characters would be in casual dress and doing natural things. Just made the game world feel alive.

While with street fighter I never feel that way. Kinda like cartoon characters Cammy wears that leotard everywhere. Even in the animes. Always pulled me out of it when Ryu was walking around in his GI while everyone else is dressed normally.

I want to like vanessa, but she bites my man ricks style. The kof series needs more real bout characters.

While I do talk shit about the character designs in KOF, KOF and Tekken do what this person is describing where as Street fighter does not, and to me, tekken and kof benefit from it.

+1 for SNK having the most radical and awesome character designs in the 90s. KOF XIII is top tier now days too. SO much personality that didn't come from a reliance on weird stereotypes.

What do you find questionable about them?

Lars, for example. He's the definition of a Mary Sue-esque character.
>Illegitimate Son of Heihachi Mishima
>An unproven Tekken Force grunt able to force a large rebellion within the Tekken Force ranks to take on both the Zaibatsu and G Corp
>after 'stumbling' on another pointless Mary Sue that doesn't add much to the story, he just suddenly gets Amnesia instead of dying like every other Tekken Force soldier.
>Befriends/alligns with Lee Chaolan, mind you that Lee fucking /despises/ Kazuya and Jin, but KNOWING that Heihachi's his dad he just alligns with him because yolo
>Takes down an entire squad of Zaibatsu drones AND Nina Williams by himself
His design compared to the other Mishimas stick out like a sore thumb. Honestly Lars, unlike Kazuya and more agressively akin to jin, was created solely for fanservice. Handsome, muscular, cleft chined european droll with little to no developing personality through the entirety of the campaign . It's sad that Masashi Kishimoto put more character in his Naruto iteration than Namco did with his Tekken thing.

There's more Offenders; Alisa (overpowered robot for a series known for it's pretty average robots like the Jack units, but created solely for universal appeal.), Lili (clone of Karin from SF) Raven (Wesley Snipes general) La Mariposa (It's fucking Julia) Ling Xiaoyu (boring Schoolgirl/clingy to Jin), eetc.

Remember when Howarang used to get away from his obsession with beating Jin in Tekken 3, and moved on to being a military expert in Tekken 4? But for some fucking reason they go back to arrogant shithead in Tekken 5? That's the shit that really couldn't stand about Tekken's characterizations. Chrisie--once a unique and interesting character in Tekken 4 due to her connections with Eddy--is now a ball of Fanservice that doesn't contribute anything to the series. Hell in Tekken 3 they had a damn good start with Forrest Law's story, but they just...go back to Marshall for no fucking reason. What the hell happened to Kunimitsu? She had something EXTREMELY important to go through with Yoshimitsu that was NEVER covered again after Tekken 2.

It's just a waste. It's lazy. It's pointless, compared to KOF where we see minor characters like Kensou had mastered his spirit of the dragon by the time KOFXIII came out.

Wow. Never played a SNK game regrettably(and strangely considering my favorite genre is fighting games) but that design is perfect, i really can't express how close this is to my preference in character design, really cool stuff.

You have valid points, but there are bigger issues with tekken characters you have yet to touch.

Also the bolded is blasphemous

Wow just fully absorbed what you said, I disagree with most of it.

You mean 97 right? In 98, she lost the ability to combo into the command grab, because the grab was only available after her evasive shift.

Awesome and the superior redhead in slacks (firing shots at C. Viper).

Well, Lily may be hotter than Karin, but a better character? No chance. No one in SF history plays like Karin, that's why I love her.
