OPINION: Wii U, best console to own in 2014, easily

I absolutely agree. It worries me. If Nintendo is doing this much fantastic work and being met with awful financial performance, what lesson are they going to take from that? Hell, what lesson is the industry going to take from that? Hell, what lesson do we maybe have to take from that? Quality doesn't matter?

Let's hope Nintendo realizes its main issue is marketing before it takes in the lesson you highlighted. I know dozens of people that didn't even know the Wii U existed. Forget being confused by whether the gamepad was an add-on or not. They straight up had no idea it existed. Such a huge, huge misstep by Nintendo. Almost half the time I go to buy a Wii U game, there is a person behind me asking "what is that? How come I don't know about this?". In a game store, no less.

It is exactly how opinions work. I give mine, and you give yours. If you don't agree with my opinion, you can provide a counterexample.

You can say, "I disagree, I don't enjoy the gameplay in Super Mario 3D World, because the difficulty curve ramps up too slowly for experienced gamers, causing many to lose interest before the game provides any real challenge." And I'd be forced to concede to your point (although I'd still encourage you to play beyond world 6, and especially beyond the credits).

Or you can stomp your feet and declare that my post should not be allowed.

I'm sorry if my post struck a nerve. Obviously it contained some hyperbole, and obviously not all people who don't enjoy Nintendo games play CoD. Not that there is anything wrong with CoD, or any other annualized game series that recycles its formula year after year. The formula works; that's why they keep making them and people keep buying them. I enjoy cinematic games also, but I cannot think of any where concessions aren't made to the gameplay in service of telling a story.

If you disagree with my opinion and think that people who don't like Nintendo games dislike them for a reason other than aesthetics, please feel free to say so.

What the actual fuck. All Nintendo fans are fucking crazy. It's my opinion so it must be kosher to say, right? I mean, it's all opinions.

EDIT: For the record, this is what you initially said:

If you don't like Nintendo games, you probably don't care about gameplay. You play games for the aesthetics.

Tell me that you aren't making sweeping generalizations and hiding behind the thin veil of "it's my opinion."

There's no reason to disparage a group. There's no reason to insinuate that people who don't like Nintendo games obviously aren't playing games for the gameplay. It's frustrating as hell to deal with people like you. I'm sure you get annoyed with people who claim that Nintendo is only for kids. Do you not realize that you are doing the exact same thing that they are doing?

Of course it is, Tropical Freeze and Mario Kart 8 are easily my top 2 games of the year(Danganronpa 2 being the only one really fighting for a higher spot).

I can't wait for Smash Wii U, BAYONETTA 2, and Captain Toad. What an amazing year.

As someone who owns a Wii U as well as a decent gaming PC (and PS4), I agree with the OP's sentiments.

The other consoles will have their moment to shine, but that probably won't be for a year or two.

I don't own a next gen console yet but I agree, fantastic lineup.
The others are a safer bet in the long term though.
If you can afford 2 consoles one of them should definitely be a wiiU.

I own a wiiu and I have played every one of the big wii u titles and the only ones that left any sort of lasting impression is w101(which I enjoyed a lot) and zombiu (which I enjoyed for bit)

I bought this for bayonetta 2, and if it wasn't so close to release I'd have sold the wii u. Easily the worst console I've ever bought in terms of games that I like. Never before have I owned a console with so much I dont enjoy

I can't wait for Bayonetta 2 though

I don't think anyone can really deny that Wii U easily has the best games so far this gen. However a lot of people are buying PS4 for the hopes of what is coming.

They know Its Coming, And They Know Its A Huge Up Grade To ps3/360, People Upgrade There Phone Every Year For Minor upgrades. Everybody at this point wants an upgrade, and PS4 is easily the best hardware, so it makes sense that's it selling great. Even though it has the weakest line up so far, I'm still getting a ps4, cause I want the best hardware for a console and I know Sony will deliver and want the best version of third party games.

PC for multi-plats + WiiU + 3DS is the best possible way to game short of getting every device, IMO.

This is exactly what I'm planning on doing. Somehow I've never owned a Nintendo console and I'm looking forward to changing that. The list of exclusives is great, the Wii backwards compatibility is nice (I may just use Dolphin anyway but still) and it'll be fun to play some of these games with my nephews. Add in the 3DS with it's selection of awesome games plus all the DS stuff I missed and they sound like the perfect companions to PC.

I'll be tempted to play Bloodborne and other exclusives the PS4 and XO have but the library just isn't there to justify buying them, especially when 90% of their selection is on or will come to PC anyway. Maybe in a few years when they're dirt cheap but not right now.

Haven't played it for months, just sits there. Thought about renting Hyrule Warriors but went with Mordor and Aliens instead, next will be Evil Within and then Dragon Age. Will probably rent Smash during the holidays to mess around with it with relatives and Cap Toad.

About that...... The Evil Within is ehhhh and Shadow of Mordor takes far too many mechanics from other games and layers them with an uninteresting and sparse story. GAF let me down on that one. Have yet to play Alien Isolation but that game looks very good. Still, I agree with the OP due to just the sheer amount of quality in the exclusives that the Wii U has.

I'm betting that was just a thoughtless stab in the Dark, with no offense intended. I can relate in that I've been playing video games for so long that the vast majority appear very samey to me and force a lot of disinterest by default. I couldn't get 10 hours into tropical freeze before I was bored to death, and I had to force myself to finish the last of us. I feel like the majority of the mainstream industry has been refining the same dozen games for two decades now. Which has everything to do with age and experience.

You know, I feel the same way.
Best we can do now is pick a type of game we want to play (ie Metroidvania, corridor shooter, open world something or other, etc) that has the type of elements we want to see (ie cartoony, serious, fantasy, horror, etc). Happy that there are plenty of everything going around though. Something is bound to catch our interests and succeed in grabbing our attention and something that does neither is not automatically bad.
I do understand the "too matoor for kiddy manoor" because I also like to think that it is not an absolute "I'm totally better and above this; respect the fuck out of me". Even if supremacy is the case it's only for the time being. All of our tastes and preferences have changed from back then and will change from now.

Okay buddy. I'm as big of a Nintendo fan as it gets, but you're getting pretty transparent here.
Indeed. I am a big Nintendo fan as well, easily the developer with most franchises I like (only SEGA comes close), but the fanboy/girl-ism in this thread is absurd. It is not only the OP, but some other people saying stuff like "If you aren't interested in any Wii U games, I have to question if you really like games" is just... I don't know. Embarrassing, I guess. You can easily like something without being such a blind fanboy/girl.

I'll bite. To give a general idea of my tastes I'll list some stuff I like off the top of my head -

AAA Tier: Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, The Last of Us, Shadow of the Colossus, Persona 4, Metal Gear Solid 1-3, Hotline Miami, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Metroid.

A Tier: Transistor, Persona 3, Sonic Generations, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, ICO, Ocarina of Time, Ace Attorney Series, Ghost Trick, Super Meat Boy.

And of course a million other games I'm forgetting. These are all off the top of my head (though I do try to keep the top 5 fresh in my mind).

Nintendo doesn't really fit my tastes in most cases. My main complaint is that their games very, very rarely have any sort of depth to them beyond gameplay. When I beat a Nintendo game, it's over. There's nothing to think about while I'm doing random stuff at work or meaningful discussions to have with my friends and other people online. The games can be pretty, but there's little to grab me intellectually. Hyrule is a complete joke compared to Boletaria and Lordran. The stories in the last three Zelda games were straight up bad. Mario is boring and I don't care for the characters/universe (gameplay doesn't do it for me either). Not interested in Pikmin, I hated Zelda SS and thought ALBW was mediocre, Metroid and F-Zero are dead, I don't like Bayonetta's aesthetic, Hyrule Warriors' story looks juvenile as fuck and the gameplay looks dull, I already played DKCR and TF looks like an expansion pack I don't need, and... well off the top of my head those are the only games I can think of that are going to be out soon or just came out.

Of course, there are exceptions. KI:U was incredible. Challenging, engaging gameplay, great story with fun characters, and a good online mode. Ocarina of Time and Super a Metroid are classics. I'm excited for X and cautiously optimistic about Zelda U. Other than that though nothing else catches my eye. Bloodborne and MGSV have all of my attention.

I agree. I bought a Wii U for Bayonetta 2, but the system's great array of exclusives made that already easy decision a no-brainer.

What the actual fuck. All Nintendo fans are fucking crazy. It's my opinion so it must be kosher to say, right? I mean, it's all opinions.

Well, it would be an opinion, but you didn't provide any justification supporting this opinion.

Tell me that you aren't making sweeping generalizations and hiding behind the thin veil of "it's my opinion."

My intention was not to make sweeping generalizations. As I mentioned many times, my original post contained hyperbole. It is entirely possible that people do not like the gameplay of Nintendo games. I have edited my post to acknowledge this.

At the same time, I have yet to see someone articulate their opinion why they don't like SM3DW's gameplay.

Edit:

You make good points, I'm not a huge fan of Zelda either because of how closely the modern games have followed OoT's formula of puzzle design (wander around until you find the thing you need to use).

Have you tried 3D World? The characters and universe are pretty lame. Especially the fairies you are supposed to rescue. After Galaxy and the NSMB games I was sick of "Mario" gameplay and convinced that Nintendo had lost its touch, but World 6+ really wowed me.

No, WiiU has a few really awesome games this year like Mario Kart or Bayonetta but it misses the lot of other great/very good games the other consoles have.

And compared to the others it doesn't have a bright future with a lot of really exciting games coming in 2015+.

I don't buy a console for a couple of games, I think more in the long term. I buy a console when I'm confident I'll get 20-40 games for it that I'll love because I know certain developers (doesn't matter if exclusively or not) are going to make their main games for it.

It's definitely my favorite console. I just 100%'ed Lego City Undercover today, which was such a fun game. Never been into Lego games before, but this one's a true winner. I hope there's a sequel.

Tropical Freeze is up next, and then Bayonetta 2 next week!

like what exactly, watch dogs? titanfall? Destiny? Gotta love those average games that have great marketing.

Though I can't wait for that new batman game

Oh man. You have so much stuff to look forward to. Just save some money to blow on the virtual console if you really have been missing out on Nintendo games all these years. You're in for a treat.

P.S. Nice avatar.

Jesus Christ. The fanboyisim is this thread is disgusting. Why the hell are people here obsessed with something being the "best?"

"Platinum games are the best developers EVA! You're a blind fanboy if you think otherwise!"
"Wii U is the best console! If you don't like Nintendo games, you don't play games for gameplay, you play them for Aesthetics!"

Seriously what the fuck is with some of you? Do you read your own posts? Do you see how corny/douch you sound with these opinionated statements? Do you like trying to press buttons on other people just for the sake of it?

What is the goal of this thread? What are you trying to achieve? Some people agree with you, some people don't. Don't act like a complete jack ass if someone doesn't have the same opinion as you.

I hate these kind of threads, especially ones that are titled "X is/are the best X in the world" because all it leads too is constant trolling/flaming/insults at each other, and for what? Then it will lead to bans, mods coming in and eventually closing the thread.

If you don't like this kind of stuff may as well quit the forum right now. This is pretty much all GAF is, overgrown man babies cheerleading their favorite toys/video game companies, 24/7. Same posters making the same kinds of posts/threads over and over, year after year. There are some good posters and some good threads on the gaming side every now and then. But otherwise you're better off sticking to whatever your game's OT is.

Turn in your gamer card now

Sure, no problem.

Anything else I can do for you?

Hehehe stuff like this is always funny.

For me its simple, im tired of their franchises to the point where i am annoyed when i see them and also i HATE their gimmicky controllers. Dont get me started on their half hearted online features

IMO the one thing they have going for them right now is Bayonetta 2, otherwise im not interested.

my first console was a NES but honestly im over nintendo now.

Welp.

Way to generalize, champs. Besides, you're a GAF member, too. Why are you even posting here if it's to put everyone on blast like this?

Actually, I regret buying my WiiU. Mario Kart 8 was a huge disappointment, and none of the current games are my cup of tea. When you add the no third party support, I don't even see how someone can survive just with the WiiU. I can't sell it though, because I do like Smash so my purchase will be vindicated soon enough.

I'm really glad my Ps4
(it has no games right?
) is filling that void for me. And for many others, if the sales of the console are any indication.

Still have no idea what was going through the minds of the ppl at the top when they let go of the marketing staff that helped them sell the Wii in the first place. Real poor decision making there.

The correct answer is that you should name your products better, you should advertise better, you should cater to your demographics better, and you should have a goddamn E3 press conference.

If I wasn't completely *immersed* in the gaming industry, I don't even think I'd have even heard of most of the great games for the Wii U.

Let's see here.

Games I would buy a console to play:

[snip]

Wii U

Bayonetta 2 (not actually released here yet, but it's close enough that I'm fairly certain it won't get canceled and will actually be quite good)

[snip]

oh man, I love NeoGaf...

There are still people that think the Wii U is just an addon on tablet

Definitely. Tropical Freeze is a glorious 2D platformer and Bayonetta 2 seems a stellar game, one of the all time action greats. MK8 is great fun as well and that follows a year in which we got Super Mario 3D World and The Wonderful 101, which were games in my top five of last year.

Played Captain Toad at Gamescom and it's wonderful. Looking forward to it.

The Wii U library doesn't appeal to me at all but you'd be crazy to deny it destroys the competition in regards to exclusive.

I am genuinely bemused someone can love super meat boy and hate mario, or love sonic & knuckles but be disinterested in DKTF

If you like Nintendo games I am sure you would think its the best in 2014, you probably also think its the best when the generation is over. But if you're a little sour on those games (like me) you can happily continue to ignore it (I am jelly of Bayonetta 2 though).

i found funny when people say: "but you are missing on some incredible games like -posts list of entire multiplatform games-" i am sorry, i'm not missing nothing, i've got a pc for those kind of games

As an opinion, I most definitely disagree. My PC has a lot more games, a lot more variety of games, and in many cases the multi-platform games are superior to the console ones.

Again, as an opinion.......

well this is not an opinion, but the pc is not a console, that is a fact

I mean it's arguable depending on tastes but you also have to recognize that with the year head start the WiiU basically had a free year of games over the the other systems. I think it's shaping up to be a great little console though. Just wish it would get some Sports games.

If I was on a stranded Island and could only pick one console, I'll pick wii u. I can live without halo, I can live without Nathan Drake, but oh buy do not take Zelda, smash, Mario, Metroid away from me I won't survive. Not in a million years would I miss out on Zelda U

Until Nintendo decide to man up and take a generational leap with their consoles, then and only then will I even remotely consider buying one of their consoles. It's such a shame really. So much potential at Nintendo that is hindered by poor decision making.

Yeh, this. While I think the Wii U has taken a giant shit on every other system this year for exclusives, you still want something to flesh out the year. I dont think I would recommend the Wii U as the sole gaming console to own, but I would say if you want games that are just amazing to play the highest highs of the other consoles certainly never hit the same peak as the Wii U, is kind of in a category of itself in that regard.

But it wont tide over everyone as an only console.

Its kind or pot calling kettle black here, your ignorance about specs is hindering your decision to play some awesome games.

Wii U killed it this year and the back half of last year, all the major games lived up to the hype and were GOTY material.

Their Wii U lineup is arguably some of the greatest work they have ever done as a company, hit after hit (in terms of quality) and in some ways reminds me of the Dreamcast, though not nearly as dense in terms of release schedule.

It's truly terrifying to me that a company can create software of this quality and still fail in the marketplace, we've entered a strange era where games being great is seemingly meaningless and hype dominates all.

I see what you're doing. You just want me to buy your game, don't you? lol

When is it going to release on WiiU in EU?
