OPINION: Wii U, best console to own in 2014, easily

Well that's what I wondered, because an "all games" search returns titles on the WiiU like Shovel Knight and Guacamelee which presumably "still count" even if the reviews displayed aren't for that SKU.
All platforms, all categories, 2014 releases, minimum of 20 reviews, sorted best to worst.

http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=&cat=0&year=2014&numrev=0&sort=0&letter=&search=

It is clear that I'm just fucking about, isn't it? I was just taking Nibel's link to Gamerankings and extrapolating from there. Then Theo chucked in the bit about minimum reviews, so I fucked about with that too. I'm just trying to show the absurdity of using Gamerankings to 'settle' this stuff.

Isn't it narrow-minded to say that FH2 is better simply because it meets your personal preferences? It might be better for you to play, but is it better on a broader scale, achieving what it set out to be?

btw i don't think mk8 is all that great and i haven't played fh2 :P
No, because my statement was qualified by the mention that it was what I want. I made no definitive statement about what was the best racer, only which one suited my tastes best.

Ill chime in and say the WiiU is a strong choice for sure

Whether or not its the best choice always depends on the individual.

If we are gonna paint with broad strokes I would argue it's much better to buy in now than before.

WiiU is pretty cheap and has great games now and a strong lineup upcoming. 200 bucks directly from Nintendo for a refurb with a warranty is a solid deal.

Why people can't accept that Wii U has a better library in term of exclusive alone.... never mind me

Because that's very subjective. What if you don't like Nintendo games? What if you don't like platformers? What if your fauvorite genres are WRPG or FPS?

It's definitely my favourite console atm. I also have an Xbox One and PS4 I have them set up in my bedroom while I have the Wii U set up in the living room. Over the year I've bought:

4 Wii U Pro Controllers (I live with 4 other people so we play a lot of co-op)
Super Mario Bros U
Super Luigi U
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D Land
Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed
Rayman Legends
Injustice:Gods Among Us
Call Of Duty:Black Ops 2
Wind Waker HD (free with Mario Kart 8)

Over the course of the rest of the year I'm going to pick up Bayonetta (1 +2), Mario Kart 8 DLC, Wonderful 101, and Super Smash Bros.

My housemates and I have put so many hours into playing all the games listed above. 5 player Super Luigi U is one of the most intense and fun gaming experiences I've had all year.

Woah, woah, woah. You can play Super Luigi U with 5 players?

In can see the motivation to nail down a winner.

Its very competitive with 3 big players and Mobile muscling thr sidelines (i may be underselling the impact here)

Honestly guys there is too much variety to give an honest recommendation without addressing individual tastes. Its just not that simple

List war all ya want.

With Bayonetta 2 (and 1 remaster too, but that is more of a bonus) releasing so soon. Wii U is really becoming a great console to own IMO.

Wii u is the best console because it make gamer happy ;)

okay that was actually pretty awesome

Honestly what WRPG or FPS am I'm missing out that on Steam? None at all to be honest you not missing much like Bayonetta 2 which isn't a "Nintendo" game. 1 GOTY can seal the deal.

I did that with the PS3 slim. Purchase the console when Uncharted 2 won GOTY in several review. I knew I had to play IT. Now it the issue with gamers that have blind blinker eyes trying to downplay the importance of a game getting not one not two not three but several 10/10 score.

Hint: I'm not a really a fan of any platform. When good game need to be played then I will play it regardless of platform.

What if you don't like Bayonetta

What are "Nintendo games"? I never hear someone say "Oh I don't like Sony games" and I'm sure if they did they would be slaughtered, because it makes no sense.

4 players using the Wii U Pro controllers and playing as one of the 4 characters. The 5th player uses the gamepad and can tap the screen to build platforms, pop bubbles and stun enemies. I think it's called Boost Mode. Lot's of fun playing with friends.

Cool opinion. Everyone has a right to their opinion, I just wish some would just stop trying so hard to pass theirs off as fact. Come to think of it, the harder you try to convince others, the more insecure you come across.

That's just your opinion. Stop trying to pass it off as fact. :p

I brought up Gamerankings to show that MK8 has better chances than Driveclub or Project CARS - which won't be out until March 2015 - to win that specific category. Why did I use that website instead of Metacritic? Because it was easier and faster for me to compile a list. Does this mean everybody enjoys MK8 more than of the games I mentioned? Of fucking course it don't.

Stop acting so dumb about this shit, I think it made my point clear.

Nintendo makes very gameplay-centric games with very little emphasis on story. Most of their library (especially on Wii U) is their typical bright, colorful, mascot character affairs. Donkey Kong, Mario, Wind Waker, Pikmin, and so on. It's a broad description and they have several gameplay genres within it, but it's a distinct style nonetheless and it's rare for them to venture out of it.

Same as Mario Bros U. One player places platforms using the pad, the other 4 are actually controlling Mario & co.

Christmas just got 20% better :P I literally had no idea and I was set to just play NSMB and Luigi with three others. Now we can have a fifth player :D Thank you both!

Excellent point. Congrats on the great job

I really haven't touched my ps4 =/

only used it as a blu ray so far

..next month? I don't see any ps4 games I want lol i'm burnt out by ubisoft games, I hate bioware story teling, and I can't play shooters without getting motion sick

so yeah Smash bros wii u here i come woop woop

The term "easily" in this thread title bothers me every time i see it and i couldnt resist commenting anymore.

The wii u definitely appears to be getting 3 games that could easily be in the top 5 of the year (mario kart, smash bros, and bayonetta 2) but it is still hard to recommend it over a ps4 due to the general lack of 3rd party support (likely the other 7 of the top 10 games of the year) and last gen tech (after zelda and 2015 the system will probably be dead).

Its certainly a valid opinion that can be backed by strong and compelling arguments

Its by no means more that just that though

My takeaway from it all is that its a damn great time to be a gamer and a horrible time to try and keep up with the flood of great software.

I kind of miss the days where we had just teo big players in the market but thats selfish in the face of the massive growth we have seen in the industry.

I wish i had unlimited time and money to experience it all

I guess it's not a "console," but the 3DS is way better than the Wii U, even this year. Bravely Default - the best "Final Fantasy" game since Final Fantasy IX, the best Kirby game since Superstar, the only portable version of Shovel Knight (and in my opinion, the best version since the HD versions tend to look a bit "stretched"), Pokemon, Smash, etc etc. It does look like next year will be a great year for the Wii U - but it also looks like a great year for the PS4 too.

I have found that neither of those points bothers me when my primary platform is PC. Highly recommended. I agree that starting from Wii Nintendo made me expand my horizons a bit. Up until that I was playing on Nintendo exclusively (with occasional PC thrown in). Indeed those two are the biggest reasons. Now it's personally simple to accept Wii U as the only console worth owning.

So when someone asks for a gaming platform recommendation first I recommend getting a decent PC and then a Wii U. Oh and I think it's likely that 2016 will have some number of good Wii U exclusives. They won't kill it quite that quickly.

And there is a disturbing lack of the best platformer in years that is DK: TF in your post.

I have no issue if someone wants elaborate as to why they feel 'X' is the best console. What annoys me is the people that are going out of their way to convince others that their opinion is wrong and theirs is right.

It's just a very convenient way to dismiss an entire library of games, so they can "ignore" the system with said library.

Why do you think it will be dead after 2015? No company has announced their 2016 games yet. Doesn't mean they're all dead.

Tropical Freeze belongs in that top 5 conversation as well.

Wii U is basically the new GameCube, where it has many of the best games (yes I know they may not be your personal favorite, but they are the most refined), but only gets a few of them a year. Meanwhile PS4 is getting a bunch of EA and Ubisoft games that will be okay and get all the headlines.

Next year PS4 should improve quite a bit, hopefully Wii U can keep the current pace. XB1... I dunno. Nothing promising so far but let's see what E3 brings.

There's tons of FPS on consoles, where have you been? WRPGs are there, but to a far lesser extent.

According to Metacritic there are 9 FPS on the PS4, all of which look pretty shitty aside from Wolfenstein and Metro, which you can play on PC with all of the other FPS games. It's like saying, "There's tons of racing games on the Wii U!" (according to Metacritic there are three less racing games on the Wii U than FPS on the PS4, all of which look shitty or better on other platforms aside from Mario Kart 8) and buying the Wii U because you're a "racing game fan."

It's just a very convenient way to dismiss an entire library of games, so they can "ignore" the system with said library.

It's used everywhere by both sides. It's the same as people saying they don't like AAA games or shooters or indies. They're all bad arguments that go in circles. I don't like most of Nintendo's recent output, so I don't think the Wii U's library is all that great personally. The tone of the topic is usually what shapes it and this started with almost no way to have a sane conversation with points from both sides.

This thread has inspired me to go out and get Tropical Freeze later today, so it's had 1 positive effect at least.

Yeah forgot Tropical Freeze was this year.
I knew I was forgetting something.

Also a PC definitely works as a substitute to a ps4.

As to wii u games in 2016, i just feel like Nintendo would have mentioned something by now and it seems like all the big franchises that nintendo still focuses on are covered. Maybe they could keep it going through the first half of 2016 with something like a mario galaxy 3.

Why would they have announced games for 2 years in the future?
