Original Star Fox Creator Not Interested In Making Star Fox For Wii

G4 just posted this article up today. It's rather unfortunate.

After interviewing Q Games President Dylan Cuthbert about PixelJunk Eden, we hit him up on some questions with a franchise he helped create for Nintendo – Star Fox. As most Star Fox fans would agree, there were few Star Fox titles worth playing: Star Fox, Star Fox 64, and Star Fox Command. Not surprisingly, Cuthbert was involved in the creation of all three.

Since the release of Star Fox Command on the Nintendo DS, there hasn’t been a Star Fox title for quite a while. Considering the fact that there hasn’t been a Star Fox title released on the Wii so far, most would believe that this year will be the year where Fox McCloud will climb into his Arwing for his first Wii Star Fox voyage.

So will Cuthbert and Q Games be at the helm? Not likely….

G4: Would you like to do another Star Fox game?

Dylan Cuthbert: (Laughter) After Command? Uhh, not yet. Maybe in another 10 years. I’ve made three.

G4: Well there hasn’t been one for the Wii yet…

Cuthbert: The problem with that is that it’d be a big project, like 100 people on the staff. It’s just not something we really want to do. I’m sure someone will make it. Maybe they’ll go back to Namco.

G4: I hope not, personally. (laughs) I’d rather you did it.

Cuthbert: Well, maybe in the future, you never know. Star Fox is an interesting brand. It has a very hardcore audience. People like those furries a little too much. (laughs)

G4: Oh! People are going to love that quote. (laughs) I have to ask you, why do you think it was always difficult for developers when Fox got out of the Arwing. Fox is a pilot, but they’d always get him out of…like the tank, the tank was cool, but it still felt like an Arwing - Why do you think people wanted to take him out of being a pilot and have him run around on foot?

Cuthbert: I think that’s all Miyamoto. Whenever I speak to Miyamoto about Star Fox, he says it’s not meant to be just a flying, sci-fi shooting game. It’s meant to be anything we want to think up. But the core fans don’t want that, but Miyamoto doesn’t really care about that. He wants to make what he wants to make, so he just goes ahead and gets it done.

G4: So you’d never like to make one for Wii where you control it with the Wiimote on it’s side?

Cuthbert: Yeah, no the Wii controller would be a bit too hard to use. I don’t know…maybe the new one…

G4: Motion Plus?

Cuthbert: Yeah. Maybe that’d be more fun to play with. I don’t know. The Wii is a bit more of a toy, I think.

So Star Fox fans, it’s not looking like Q Games will be heading up Star Fox Wii. We’ll bet it’ll either be internally with Nintendo, or they’ll farm it out to a third party such as Namco (please God, no!) We’ll have the rest of our full interview with Dylan Cuthbert and Baiyon and everything PixelJunk Eden next week.

...I get the feeling he has some issues with Nintendo in general here as well...

Edit: Apparently he didn't work on Star Fox 64 despite the article saying he did. He did make an unreleased Star Fox 2 however.

Damn, a Star Fox on Wii would be hot. You could control it like a real cockpit with the Wiimote vertical or something... yeah. A lot of potential. Too bad!

so true.

Why is it when people are interviewed about the Wii, the answers are always with hints of hesitation? Like they hate it but afraid to say it. Just say what you wanna say none of this half ass shit.

We care? The original creator isn't all that special in the first place, especially since the best Star Fox is 64. Plus the last time the original creator made a Star Fox we got Command.

Q Games still does work for Nintendo. I believe they're working on a game for them right now.

The only thing I like in Star Fox games is the flying, sci-fi shooting stuff. ;_;

Same.

Star Fox 64's the only good one too, barring the first and last levels from Assault.

This guy made Star Fox 64 also.

aw man. i only like the original Starfox...

Same here. Is it on virtual console?

An online Star Fox game with traditional controls would be so awesome.....what a pipe dream.

I get the feeling you are looking into this too much.

uh, no? Dylan Cuthbert had already joined Sony before Star Fox 64 came out.

......or Its likely that he could have contributed but had to leave before it was completed

Well, that's what G4 said in the article. I'm not doubting that they could be wrong though.

Star Fox is made for the Wii controls. You'd figure just take what was great about Star Fox 64 and expand on it without adding stupid shit like they did in the turd known as Assault.

Or they could just use the obvious best method. Analog stick controls the ship and the Wiimote aims.

Sensible person says sensible things. I like what he does with the Pixel Junk games, let him keep delivering the awesome!

apparently, The Sky Crawlers pulled off the simulated flight joystick thing quite well. I'm sure a talented dev house like EAD could get them to work even better.

Well they are wrong. Perhaps the article writer misidentified his work on Star Fox 2 as 64.

I loved the tank level in 64 >.< With the train.

And the rest of the game was great and so replayable.

Except for the submarine level >.> so baaaaaaaaaaaad.

Command was pretty bad, they crippled the game for no reason.

Jackass.

I'm down with Fox and company going on foot from time to time but I largely prefer the old-school sci-fi shooter games. It should be stuff like, "Let's land and steal some crap real quick!" rather than, "Let's land and solve a bunch of puzzles and meet the local inhabitants and only use our fuck awesome space craft for the local commute".

The idea of an online four player co-op campain for the next Star Fox makes me feel all tingly and high.

This may reflect my lack of understanding of Starfox's development, but wasn't it created at least partially by someone else, and has never been made again by even close to the same group of people?

Damnit. I want a Star Fox game where they release a peripheral that makes the Wii Remote into a flight stick.

Man he's pretty insultingly dismissive of the Wii there. "Maybe that would be better I guess, whatever. It's just a toy." I'd call him a bit of a shit if I didn't love Pixeljunk Eden so much.

You get a pass this time, Cuthbert.

Preach.

This guy not being involved is not likely going to stop Ninty from making a Star Fox game, nor does it immediately mean that they can't make a GOOD StarFox game.

The problem just lies in the fact that most of us would like to just see something like StarFox 64, only more so, while Ninty/Miyamoto/whomever-else-is-involved doesn't seem to get that notion. It's ALMOST as bad as what's going on with a certain other series... :D;

Star Fox 64 was so damn good. Wish they would go back to the old style. Even assault on gamecube some of the flying bits were good.

I want a StarFox game that looks like After Burner Climax, with music by Hajime Hirasawa and with less talking animals, more shooting. No bloody tanks and other silly vehicles. I liked the gibberish language from the first game. It was a lot more honest, Star Wars homage-like.

Can't stand the sequels.

If by crippled you mean the controls, it didn't matter. The game sucks even with Action Replay codes that give you normal controls.

This!

You can tell the guy resents Miyamoto for probably bossing the development around.
Miyamoto has never given a shit about what the "fans" want. When did this suddenly become an insult, and a blasphemous statement? Oh right, it was when he stopped giving us things that were better than what we asked for.

Star Fox Command sucked donkey nuts, and playing Star Fox 64 makes the original almost obsolete, especially in control.

A Wiimote version would be pretty interesting, as long as Fox and co. stayed the damned ships and it remained (and yes, I appreciate the irony) on rails.

Yeah, they really should go back to LTTP style for the handheld Zeldas.

I can totally back this idea. I doubt nintendo would.

Why the heck hasn't a developer make a "star fox" type of game? Closest I've seen is no gravity for the psp.

The entirety of Nintendo holds this belief that they know what their fans want more than the fans themselves do. Sometimes they are right... and sometimes they are horribly wrong.

64's tank stages were awesome, only 2 stages, just the perfect amount
the tank following the train stage with the end boss, probably the best stage in 64
