Orioto art thread - New VG wall every thursday!

This will be my last reply here.

I'm far from "feeding" on your sadness or whatnot. On Deviantart, how many times did I comment on your work ? Twice maybe ? Hardly "criticizing you everywhere you go", dude.
Also, you seem to forget that we met once, last year, I bought some postcards from you (hardly something someone feeding on whatever you said would do) and we chatted about you doing a Banjo & Kazooie piece, as I was wearing a BK tee. I even took pictures of your exhibition and posted them online, with absolutely zero negative comment, and you appreciated that.

I also have a degree in comics and illustration, and graphic design, I've had my fair share of"good" and "bad" comments too and as Shikoba said, it helps to build a hard skull.

Call me a douchebag all you want, Orioto, I don't care.

I remember you yeah. You looked nice back then. Still i don't like the way you come back at me with your requests about how i should have done this or that for your likings. That's what i told you in first place. That wasn't the moment to do that. If i'm fucking sad about something not working, and you're an artist, you should know this won't make thing any better to add more criticism to it, while i already know precisely what's the problem, like i said. It's like you're just putting your finger in the scar just for the sake of it. if you can't understand that what can i say. What you say is not criticism it's a complaint.

I really think you're taking this too personally. Consider the following from another board I frequent:

It seems to be something you would see on an art sharing board yeah.. i'm not posting my art in a thread with many artists to have critic about it.

I don't like critic cause it's always, always condescending. Cause people criticizing think they know something you don't. They don't know you, they think you're doing things lightly. You're not thinking for hours what you want to do for each piece.

And he was not criticizing here actually he was telling me why he didn't like, as a "potential customer" what i did, meaning "next time maybe do that". That's what i reacted to at first. Read my post.

He's telling me my Sonic art is not good for him cause it's not sonic like enough. Don't you think if i wanted to do a sonic art with checkered board i would do it ? I was telling him i do things the way i want, and not for him personally. He's not helping me with any critic here he's just acting like a customer talking to some after-sale service, which i'm not. That's what i told him.

Now let's not talk about it anymore please. We get it i'm a douche bag, i don't like critics, nor people complaining about what i do. I have my own path, i'm really critical about what i do, i don't post in art threads on the net to progress through critics. I'm 35 and i know precisely what i do, what are my limits and my influences. I know when i fucked up and when i did good. I'm my own master and that's how i live, and how i've always lived.

Mario Galaxy looks amazing, I'm running out of room to hang art but it's getting bought. Great work Orioto. Never cease to amaze.

Thx and by the way i can't answer messages when the user is anonymous on redbubble, that's unfortunate i'm not sure how it works!

So i couldn't answer the other nice gaffer who bought a FFXII piece (i hope not just to make me happy but cause he liked it!)

No worries! Just happy to support great art. There's been so many pieces I've loved and had to have. My wife suggested we may need to eventually dedicate an entire wall in our home to just your art haha. Despite not being overly interested in video games she really enjoys your compositon and colors.

You're repeating what i just said ;)

Anyway the Halo one should be like that. It's the beginning with some liberties taken.

Can't wait. Love your work, and this is my favorite game.

Thx to put some positivity on the page :p That's nice to hear!

I hope it'll meet its audience this time lol. It's more easy with the vertical thingy in the sky anyway. But i'm not sure halo fans are into my kind of poster

Sorry no Halo this week. I didn't even start -__-

Reason is i started a new (again) game project and i wanted to kickstart it with some material for motivation!

A.. sidescroller shmup with rpg elements and a metroidvania structure, yup a .. gradiusvania! ! All that with nausicaa/madmax vibes.

So this week i'll do what i wanted to do later anyway, a rerun for a 3yo piece.

I am intrigued, when will we see/read more about this project?!

Shiiitt, I need this. You gotta do more Halo and sci fi stuff in general. This looks stunning.

Thx, well i'll see how that sells already :p

I've uploaded a video timelaps to show the mattepainting process. Not detailed, i made it quick cause i have to manually save captures regularly to do it and it's not convenient.

But it give an idea and it's full hd, but not full screen as i didn't want to crop obviously.

Timelaps wip

A 5mo gif for those who don't like youtube :p

I don't even / haven't even played Halo but goodness that's fabulous. Think that's going to have to go on my fairly full wanted pile.

I meant to ask Ori, have you ever done / would you ever do a Mass Effect picture? I don't think I've seen any in your catalogue from it but maybe you did a few years back.

Never did it but yeah sure, why not! I'm not afraid of unusual grounds!

Got these 5 back in June. Been meaning to post these for a while.

I'm thinking I might swap the styrene that came with these frames with non-glare glass.

I also just got in some metal prints of the TLOU and Journey ones. I'll post those later.

Wow thx for the pics :)

I wouldn' really know hmm.. You can see a demo on the sire right ?
You know, Orioto, seeing the timelapse, I would probably be willing to pay a reasonable price for a HD video for a making-of of a painting, explaining some techniques you use...

You may not be interested in doing this, but just in case, there may be a niche market for such a video ;)

(and again, I really like the image, even if I couldn't recognize which game it was... excited for an upcoming Majora one...)

The thing is i can't technically do a complete vid cause it's too much for my pc, my photoshop files being really heavy already on the ram. That and i dont think i'll do the timelaps again cause most people are not interested i think.

People doing techs videos are more concept artists who have crazy digital painting skills, and indeed people pay for that.

Yessss. So much this!

I'll do it but for this one, as for the majora's one, i would need more opinions about what scene would be nice. Gaf was talking to me more before. Lots of nice pieces were done with you guys inputs.

Just wondering, but have you considered doing a Patreon thing? I see tons of artists opening a Patreon account and sharing timelapses and sketches and stuff to their patreons. Not implying you should or shouldn't, just wondering if it ever crossed your mind.

As for nice Mass Effect scenes... Man, that's hard. My memory of the scenery and stuff of the planets is kinda hazy. I'll have to check some videos first to jog my memory before I can comment on that... so I'll get back to that later :P

For ME there's a fair few good scenes. I'm very partial to the first game and the section during the intro where you see the first Reaper (Sovereign) taking off from the planet you're on is amazing to look at. Hard to find it on Google though, this is the best I can find. Link

Other than that there's the huge fight with it at the end of the game, any scene with Harbinger from ME2/3, or you could even go down a different route and go with the main ship (the Normandy) about to pass through a Mass Relay or something along those lines.

I think Clock Town with the tower is the most iconic piece you could do.

You could put Link in the square looking up at skull kid on top of the tower with the moon above him. Link could be either a Deku or human, your choice :p

Hey Orioto,

For Mass Effect, I'd do something with a big sense of wonder and/or adventure and a presence of the unknown/alien, so definitely something from 1 or 2 and with a lot of colour. The Sovereign on Eden Prime at the intro on 1, the derelict reaper on 2... Illium or Omega is good too because of the neon blade runner like atmosphere, of course, so is the citadel from the Citadel dlc.

On the other hand, have you ever done something Dragon's Dogma? If so, I've missed it and would love to see it. If not, what are you waiting for? :) I'd love to see it realized after ME! That's my suggestion. :)

Ps: love your work! Cheers

Edit: ooohhhhh and Hyper Light Drifter, finished it yesterday and that game is so atmospheric and lends so much to use one's imagination that I'd love to see your vision of it. Colourful, intriguing, mysterious and full of little details to realize! That game needs more gorgeous fan art, the Orioto treatment might be the next best thing to a sequel lol.

Ohh something like the Citadel or Omega would be wonderful for the Mass Effect piece! Those are definitely some memorable places from the games. Maybe it would be hard to make it recognizable though. If I wanted to put something Mass Effect on my wall, I'd like to have something iconic on the piece, such as Shepard, the crew, or the Normandy.

Here's a few things that come to mind from the top of my head...

Not a big fan of Mass Effect 3, but I gotta admit this scenery was pretty amazing to see. I think it would fit your style too. You could even include Shepard into the scene. Still, it is Mass Effect 3, which isn't exactly loved as much as the first two games.

One of my favorite moments from Mass Effect 2. The lighting and colors are just beautiful.

The problem with Mass Effect is that players can change Shepard's gender and appearance. I would hesitate to buy a picture with a male Shepard, for example, because it doesn't really resonate with me that much. If you included Shepard in the piece, it would be cool if you made two versions :D. Or maybe make it vague enough so that his/her gender is ambiguous ;)

Well if it was say the scene on Eden Prime or one where Shepard talks to / faces off against a Reaper it'd be fine as Ori could avoid having to show the side / front of Shepard. Shepard with a helmet on from behind at a bit of a distance would satisfy most I'd imagine as it could be either. Again though there's a lot of options, as pointed out he could even completely avoid directly showing Shepard and use the Normandy or even just have an image with normal life on the Citadel. I do agree though that if going for the latter it might not be as obvious that it is Mass Effect as it while very stylish, it could perhaps be mistaken for other games / movies with that use of Cyberpunk-ish styles.

Initially i don't like it cause i prefer people to give me money WHEN they like what i do, versus for i will do. The difference is pretty big. Now, i'm wondering if i couldn't replace the payhip thing by a patreon and to offer more wall sizes. Maybe it would be more profitable for me. But i can't really offer the kind of value digi painter offers with their wip vids. As you saw with the Halo one you don't see everything and it's not pure painting from scratch. People are just disappointed in general :p

Well i think the majora i did already is something in that style.. So i have to find something else!

Thx guys for the input on ME, i know nothing about it so i will look at all that! I'll do something with the character small (like in the halo one) so no real genre problem.

Also news times, it's voting time for sold out piece to come back on my facebook and the Journey and Last of Us pieces are almost gone (they won't be voted back of course for a good while, that's math logic :p )

I love this moment too. It's in the first hour of the game and it stuck with me.
I talked about it in the Community thread when I played it again a few months ago :
I'm playing it too (in a lesser resolution :p) and I had forgotten how big the Citadel is compared to the third one.

Also, I love the first appearance of Sovereign. No cutscene, no bullshit, you just run up a small hill and holy shit what is that thing over there ???
No warning, no nothing, it's just suddenly there, and it makes that noise, and it slowly leaves the atmosphere.
Even after playing the whole trilogy a bunch of times, this moment still works so well. You just get a gut feeling that something huge and bad is happening.
Love the first one, great use of music (and of silence sometimes).

I asked the people in the ME Community thread if they have some preferences, so let's see !

ME3 has some great scenery but personnally I would much prefer ME1 or 2.

There is a lot of gorgeous scenery in Mass Effect. A few things come to mind that may work.

The scene on Eden Prime when Shepard is interacting with the beacon.

The scene on Eden Prime with Sovereign taking off.

The Normandy flying towards Omega.

A view of the Citadel from the perspective of one of the wards as the Normandy is flying in may work.

The part on Ilos where the mako is fighting through Geth Armatures to get to the conduit.

The attack on the Citadel by Sovereign and the Geth.
