OS X Mavericks BETA - Discussion

6) They removed the option to have the Power button show a list of what you want to do. Now it only sleeps the computer. I am so disappointed. Here's what I mean:

Mavericks:
iTQFw4odmq1dq.png

Mountain Lion: ("Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" option)
ivD48x6Vx5l0S.png

i9Zbi0mVYx08c.png

This sucks so much as I used that feature all the time. I don't want to put my laptop to sleep with a button. That's what closing the damn lid is for! And I can't figure out how to get the option back. It was much easier to use than the damn Apple menu and I want it back goddammit!

ctrl + alt + command + eject = shutdown

Hey Real Abed thanks a lot for the comprehensive answers, told me everything I needed to know and was wondering about!

Nope. It does try and remember that set of tabs, but I did testing a while ago and it was really unpredictable and flakey. It seems to have problems remembering things.

However if you have a tab open to say your main drive and you double-click that icon on the desktop, it will switch to the open tab providing you're switching to that folder from another folder or the desktop that isn't a "single window mode" folder. (Where it opens the folder in place)

I hope we can put the unpredictability down to the Beta status but regardless it's still encouraging as this is how I've wanted Finder to work for a while.
I've never been back to OS9 since the initial release of X so had forgotten how the folders functioned, now you've reminded me I miss it too.

I want to know if AppleScript can open tabs directly into already created windows so I can write a script that opens a folder, then places a few more folders into that same window as tabs so I can have a bunch of scripts that set up a workspace for me. Something as simple as "Open *FOLDER PATH* in *CURRENT FOREGROUND FINDER WINDOW*".

Ohhhh this would be amazing!
You just know it won't be possible to implement :(

My 2 cents question: On my macbook air 11 2010 Lion and Mountain Lion aren't as responsive as Snow Leopard.

Can I expect increased performances with Mavericks or will I have to stick to Snow Leopard?

Anybody know if this will come with improved Bootcamp/drivers for compatibility with Windows 8?

I have been told Windows 7 is better supported right now but I was wondering if that is about to change?

The only fix I want in iPhoto is for Fullscreen to make the normal UI fullscreen. Not that black background POS they introduced before they created the current Lion-style Fullscreen. That UI is bullshit and limited on features. I want the normal UI like iTunes and EVERY OTHER APP THAT GOES INTO FULLSCREEN.

It's a good thing I rarely use iPhoto.

I pretty much forgotten that mavericks comes with iBooks and maps.

On this note, I kinda wish Apple had decided to make Maps a web app instead. The actual app is really barebones and offers very poor magic mouse navigation support (trckpad has some gestures but not on magic mouse).

it’s a kind of clunky app and the only benefit it offers is the ability to send directions over to the iphone. But I can see myself wanting to use this feature at work while on a Windows machine. “run anywhere” webapp with the super easy “send” feature would be nice.

Anyway, I’ll probably continue to use google maps on the phone (and in a browser on computer) 95% of the time anyway. Apple maps still hasn’t fixed errors in my city that I flagged multiple times almost a year ago.

Yup, it sucks. Still the same.

iPhoto is installed with DP5 whether you had it installed or not. Whether that points to it being included with Mavericks or going free... or is just included for testing.

iBooks is a bit wonky, bunch of random errors.

iphoto needs a fundamental rethink in how it manages photos.

add photo to iphoto
edit photo
upload photo to facebook
delete photo from iphoto
result: photo is deleted from facebook

how to avoid this:
add photo to iphoto
edit photo
upload photo to facebook
preferences -> unlink facebook account
delete photo from iphoto
preferences -> link facebook account
result: photo is deleted from iphoto, still on facebook

this is insane.

iBooks looks lovely though. Love the typography, icon, UI (well there's not much of an UI). The new Apple guidelines look good on the Mac.

Shame that it will only spread on an OS-level by 10.10, I imagine.

Okaay, In iBooks thought I was gonna be able to do notes on .pdf files like they did in the WWDC demo (but it wasn't a .pdf). Now, it's kind of useless. I'm not gonna read books on a laptop, lol.

Yeah, I stopped using iPhoto for FaceBook syncing a long time ago.

OK, so maybe this is just my machine or some odd sw config I have but DP5 has introduced a serious bug where the scrolling via magic mouse or trackpad (15” MBP retina, fwiw) just stops working for long stretches of time. Or it’ll be “stuck” on one window and only that window will scroll no matter what window is active or where the mouse is located.

I had to set the scrollbars to always visible just so i can drag the handle and move around a screen while this occurs. (rebooting fixes the issue temporarily)

yikes! hazards of messing with early software, I know!

Maps really needs to be a web app, I'm really surprised that they didn't make it part of the updated iCloud. Some version of iPhoto or at least photo streams should be in iCloud as well.

Loving the UI of iBooks. The small transitions, the fade of the menu bar/titlebar, etc. I would love to see iTunes trim down and take on this appearance.

I agree that maps should also be an iCloud app. It would make sense over time. I was playing with iWork today and it's very slick.

I'll stay on DP4, then I guess lol

It is working very well for me. I'd hate to introduce an annoying bug by upgrading when I've been lucky so far.

Damn I didn't knew this! I'm not using this anymore, too much of a pain in the ass and I see it would have eventually bit me in the ass, most likely.

Fuck. DP5 has completely fucked my computer completely. It's now stuck in a boot loop. Even my clone was backed up and is now in a worse loop. And for some goddamned reason I can't connect to my fucking wifi network to reinstall. What the fuck. This is terrible and I am fucked because I can't get anything onto my machine. How did they fuck up 5? 4 was perfect.

Edit: Safe Boot lets me boot up so I'm going to try reinstalling from there. Maybe stop at 4 this time. This will be how I spend the next 2 hours.

Also my clone drive seems to have given up on me. What the hell. Yep. It's dead. Rapidly flashing lights are telling me there's a problem with my 7 year old backup drive. Guess its time to replace it with something USB3. But why does everything need to break the same night? I hate technology sometimes.

Since Safe Boot works its obviously something I have loading at boot. But I never install anything for all users. I always install for my main user.

Edit: After making a new clone to one of my other many drives I deleted my caches and rebooted and amazingly it booted right up again. So weird. I am going to keep an eye on it and if it keeps giving me problems I'll have to try going sick to 4. It must have been a corrupted cache file. I hate that cache's still exist in the SSD age. They're not needed anymore and removing them doesn't change loading speed at all. They're useless now.

Shame I ended up wearing out my backup drive in the process. I guess it was his time. (It was my one remaining MyBook 1TB)

Edit Again: In an interesting turn of events, my original backup drive is now back. I never liked roller coasters. So someone let me off this one.

In the latest beta the Bluetooth menu bar icon no longer shows when data is being sent/received, is this happening to anyone else?

iPhoto isn't a Facebook uploaded, it's a Facebook synchroniser. And it probably doesn't docs good job of it if aperture is anything to go by.

It makes sense, but I can never keep things properly synced.

Anyway, the best way to use iPhoto is as a library and manager - as a way to find and organise your photos. When you do and you need to do something with then, I always drag them out to desktop and wire with the copies if I want to email or Facebook or what not.

Apparently if you use Activity Monitor to force quit the "WindowServer" process scrolling will start working like normal again.

Edit:

Of course as soon as I post this my scrolling messes up again, so this appears to be a very temporary fix.

I haven't been following this too closely, but has there been any changes to how a library is shared across two user accounts? Ex: two different user accounts can access the same iPhoto library b

This scrolling bug in the latest update is quite possibly the most annoying bug I've ever dealt with.
After my weird supposedly corrupted cache problem last night, yes. It is weird though. When it happens, and lord knows what causes it, it stops me from being able to scroll in any app with the trackpad... EXCEPT for Chrome. Somehow I was still able to use Chrome fine. But any other app, Finder, Sublime Text, iTunes, it would not work. Rebooting fixes it, but when it comes back it's sudden and annoying. Hopefully they patch it quickly instead of waiting 2 weeks for DP6.

Well obviously, but there are hundreds of files in there. No way am I looking through every one.

There really isn't hundreds... a little common sense (after all your power settings aren't going to be in com.apple.iphoto.plist for example) and it's easy to find.

Anyway the settings are in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist but your better off using PMSET in terminal to set this.

I have almost 450 preference files named com.apple. And I didn't even know there was a SystemConfiguration folder.

Anyway, the setting in that file is not there. There's nothing relating to making the power button ask anymore. I'll have to compare this one to the one on my Mountain Lion machine when I get home to see if it was removed or can be put back. If it even existed in there.

Also, this scrolling bug is annoying as hell.

ha, well at least it’s not just me!

on the plus side, I didn’t get it once today after having it twice yesterday. fingers crossed. it’s annoying

edit. 10 minutes after posting this, I got the scrolling problem twice. first time needed a reboot. second time it fixed itself with no intervention from myself.

hooo boy. DP6 can’t get here fast enough, lol

I had the scroll bug too.

I also had the iPhone not syncing bug as well. That was apparently down to having iTunes 11.1 beta already installed before dp5, and I fixed it by reinstalling the iTunes beta.

Coincidence or not, I haven't had the scroll bug since. Knock on wood of course! It's probably unrelated though, I'd guess.

So noone can pinpoint why the scrolling bug happens? It's so weird that it just pops up now. Mavericks has been awesome up until now. I really don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling DP1-4 to get back so I'm hoping it gets fixed in a DP5 update at some point.

This is what life was like in the early '90s when people had to scroll pages manually. It's horrible! A nightmare I tells ya!

And it still somehow doesn't affect Chrome. I don't understand why.

See it affects the two-finger scroll action. Chrome must use it differently because it's not getting affected. But other things that use scrolling do like even the gesture to dismiss Notifications (Swipe to the right) as well as games that use scrolling for changing weapons or items like ZDoom and MineCraft. But somehow NOT CHROME WHY???

As I mentioned before, if you're hit by the scrolling bug go into activity monitor and force quit the process "WindowServer". It'll make you login to your account again but at least you don't have to reboot the whole machine

The scrolling bug is actually mentioned in the seed note.

Try looking in the console to see if there's a particular app – like BetterTouchTool – generating errors.

Or you can just log out. It's less... abrupt and forceful and does the same thing.

My console is always filled with garbage. There's no way to make hide nor hair of anything in there. Since I'm mostly using Chrome, I never know when the bug hits until way later so I can't tell when to look in the Console.

Also, while I said Chrome doesn't seem to be affected by it, it only seems to apply to Chrome. The Canary build still has the problem when it happens. So weird.

Someone please pinpoint it and someone please fix it!
