OUYA to have NES/SNES emulators available at launch

Wait......wait one second.....

For $99 I can have an NES, SNES, and N64 in a tiny little unit under/next to my TV?!

I wonder how they will stack up against the Android "*.emu" emulators from Robert Broglia. His are pretty much perfect if you have a fairly recent device, although all cost $5 besides the SNES one.
 
I remember when the Wii's Virtual Console was first announced and I, being an idiot, thought for some reason I'd be able to buy ANY game from the NES, SNES and N64. I planned on buying the console for that reason alone...creating a complete library of games I loved like DuckTales and R.C. Pro-Am.

I was so young, so naive...
 
This is seriously some bullshit. If I were an Android game dev I'd be pissed, no one's going to buy your game if they can pirate (uh I mean play a back-up) of Super Mario instead.
 
Emulators is the only reason some people should be expecting some good times with this console. What kind of games are you guys expecting? Some big budget AAA games? :lol Also Android.
 
Maybe if Nintendo actually took the VC seriously and stopped their trickle down non-sense I'd feel bad. Not to condone piracy. But Nintendo has been really bad with their VC strategy.

Ouya was never meant to compete with the big three, I'm not sure why people keep acting like it is.
 
Yeah emulators are definitely legal. It's the roms that are hot issue.

Do we even have perfect emulators for NES and SNES? Since I know ZNES isn't perfect.

The way they are handling VC on the Wii U is really terrible (although I understand having to reprogram all that shit for Wii U features), but they did about as well as one could expect with the Wii and 3DS.

Nestopia is supposedly cycle-accurate and probably as close to perfect as you're ever gonna get.

Bsnes is pretty great if your processor can handle it.

If the emulator code contains any Nintendo copyrighted material they are exposed to legal action.

Its less whether emulators as an entity are legal/illegal, and more being able to prove that the emulator authors did not infringe on the original copyright holders patents and IP in the production of the product.

Essentially it puts emulator authors in the position that if they cannot prove full-blown "white room" standards were maintained, trying to profit from their work can potentially land them in legal jeopardy.

Basically emulation is tolerated; however if it gets too close to comfort in terms of potential impact on the original IP holders business, (like Ouya benefitting from emulation allowing their platform to function as an ersatz Nintendo home console) expect legal action against both developer and publisher.
 
How powerful is Ouya in comparison to any given home console for emulation anyway? Is it as powerful as a Wii? I'm not even sure of it's specs.

Being open source, the emulators should be better regardless, I'm just wondering what the actual power is.

Last time I checked, Android games sell good on cell phones that also have NES emulators available.

If someone has a computer that was made after 2003, it can likely run an NES emulator at full speed, so I don't see the desire to completely ignore Android games in favor of NES games.
 
I love how everybody always tries to argue the legality of emulators for discussion purposes...

I'd bet money everyone in this thread plays emulators and really doesnt give a damn in the grand scheme of things. I'll be the first to admit that I do. I love playing classic games and it's simply the easiest way.
 
Nintendo might not do anything since that has been their stance on emulation on PCs, their tone might change this time around though since it is a console directly competing with it. The OUYA folks might want to reconsider this since a lawsuit this early in their existance could financially hurt them. But they know their finances better than me so I dunno what kinda warchest they are working with.

What could kill this box is if there is an emulator for PS1/PS2 games since that would mean anything good that Square released and is considering to port over to android will have to compete with "free" emulated versions of itself (NES/SNES/PS1/PS2 were probably the glory days of that company anyway), that would probably anger some of the bigger publishers from porting games to the Android environment, or incentivize them to make new IPs on it. A PS1/PS2 emulator would kinda mean that high profile Rockstar games that were pushed heavily when the OUYA was announced would also be available via emulation.

I don't care much about emulation on this thing really, I've been considering getting an OUYA for some of the original Android games you can't find other places. So I hope if the big boys come with their lawyers, they should put up a fight, but not to the point of not existing anymore.
 
don't hate the ouya, it's a cute little console. it's obviously not going to compete with the wii u (lol) or the other consoles, but it's a nice alternative for indie gaming or retro gaming.

I wonder if it's also possible to emulate the old tube tv style for both emulators.

And BSNES feels slow even with a good processor. :/

BSNES is just really really beefy. The thing about it is that it doesn't make use of multiple processor cores, so it'd actually run better on a 3.4 GHz dual core than it will on a 2.2 GHz i7.

MAME has a really good CRT type emulation. Check out HLSL on it.

There is perfectly working Android emulators of PS1. Not sure how it competes with SE lineup. FF 1 & 2 sold well enough i think, and its avaialable on PS1.

Durante says that it utterly spanks the Wii in most respects, perhaps even exceeding the Wii U in a few. I'm not good at putting it on a sliding scale or measuring its power in terms of Gamecubes, but you should generally expect visuals similar to the late 6th gen (but HD) or the early days of the HD twins. Vita-esque, perhaps? I dunno.

Also, it's still based on Android, which is about as far as you can get from a performance-oriented "to the metal" setup.

i dont get the big deal. its an android system and you can side-load standard android apps.. here are loads of emulators for android
and the emulators aren't illegal

Wow pretty impressive performance.

I was speaking more of the fact that things don't seem to have to be run directly on Android it sounds like. I imagine Linux could be up and running on this thing quickly it sounds like.

Just like the gun, people aren't going to just use it for bad things. I carry a gun (legally) and I own/have bought basically EVERY game I could possibly emulate.

Doesn't bother me one bit.

Retro console homebrew development is one area that would be extremely difficult without emulators.

It's not illegal to dump ROM or disc image files from physical media that you own for personal use. I've got a Wii and ripped several of my own games to play on Dolphin, for example. Getting a ROM from a cartridge is a bit more challenging, but can still be accomplished with a reasonable effort and some not-too-expensive equipment.

One could also make the moral (but legally murky) argument that illicit distribution of ROMs is kind of a good thing for preserving games that would be lost to the ages due to the degradation of physical media, or rendered permanently abandonware by copyright disputes, defunct publishers, etc.

ALSO, Emulators are essential for developing homebrew games, like the awesome Super Bat Puncher for NES.

Yeah! No one should be able to play their DOS games anymore! I'm a criminal for playing my King's Quest Collection through DOSBox on Windows 7.






Be thankful for emulators. They preserve games.

But it so nice to have a bunch of NES, SNES, PS1 games on comp

And dont say anything until you tried ps2 games in 1080p on PCSX2 :P HD collections are better and I still get those though

oh, and DOS games are impossible to run on modern windows without an emulator
