Overwatch Beta Thread: Cheers Love, The Beta's Here!

No one wants to watch a game they can't play.

I see a lot of people saying this and while this is very true, bear in mind a lot of the big streamers have moved onto other games too which is why Overwatch had those numbers in the first place. Those streamers switched games and a lot of the crowd went with them.

A friend of mine lend me his account to play the beta and as a seasoned TF classic and TF2 player, I can say this game is very fun but IT TS lacking something.

-It could be the shooting mecanics, something feels off.
-It could be some funless heroes like Symmetra, the Engineer is way more fun.
-It could be the strange "pick to counter" that everyone does many times during a match.
-It could be that a lot of heroes don't are very deep to play and are very straight forward with very little to master.
-Maybe is just the lack of modes to play

It still feel a little soulless but I'm still having fun (except when friend starts to play Hearthstone :p ) and I always look forward to play some more daily. The game have room to improve and I am pretty sure that it will.

Blizz, if you are reading this gimme a code pls

I don't think there is anything absurd about banning racist/homo/transphobic/other crap people from a game.

Be careful with that high ground calling other human beings "crap people".

They have the right to have fun, mutting them is ok.

Is there MMR currently implemented? First couple of games is no one playing the objective

IIRC a dev said somewhere that properly implementing matchmaking via a hidden MMR is one of the critical things the dev team wants to work out in the early beta. Some streamers have mentioned a hidden MMR as well, and I notice the better streamers getting pitted against one another frequently.

I would like to hear more pro tf genre players opinions on this game.

Having never got into team fortress but always being told the class selection metagame was similar to the Tribes series I feel a mixed bag about overwatch and though I haven't played it it does seem like the kind of game that gets repetitive very quickly at high-level competition. Similar to how I found seasonal diablo 3.

Does this game have the depth for a lasting competitive community or are we going to see the same constant hotfixes and gameplay rebalances like d3?

With people like daHang from Quake playing (I think he came in 2nd in Vanilla Quake 1v1s at Quakecon 2014 and has been ranked a top Quake player for almost a decade). Or talespin or chump from the Tribes series. It really seems to be drawing some attention from the pro E-Sports community.

Whether it turns out to be the real genre unifying FPS E-Sports game people want it to be idk though.

Today for the invites I'd say, but who knows really.

On symmetra being boring, I think a few changes could make her less boring. Reducing the charge time on alt fire, increasing projectile speed but compensating by reducing damage. Currently, you spend A LOT of time charging orbs, then shooting them in a quick peek and going back to charging, which is super boring. You also don't aim at anything but a general direction(or a Bastion), because the orbs are so slow you're guaranteed to only hit people who run into the orb several seconds after you shot it, rather than people you tried to hit(might overlap but like, it's not on purpose). It feels fairly poor.

They could also tweak the shielding mechanic to be more active, like for example increasing the cd a bit again, and letting you refresh shields on people to actually act as a healer, rather than just a health buff on everyone.

She's a strong hero mind you, although a bit binary(if you lose hard early on, you have to switch because she becomes useless as the game progresses, if you win early, you snowball due to teleport), so she doesn't really need buffs, but could use some rework to be more fun to play, in general. I kinda like playing her, nothing like killing bad Genjis with the beam, but I could see how they'd want to change her.

I think a lot of heroes will see some changes over time to be honest, they "locked" the roster but I don't think they locked roles or hero skillsets. And hell for all we know they could decide they're lacking something and add a new hero, there's plenty of time for it. I'd expect a support if they were to do it, as it's really the lacking space, but I guess they could change an existing hero to a support(Mei due to her fairly support friendly skillset already or Torbjorn in a full rework would make sense I guess).

I received the key on Thursday but did not notice since I wasn't home. I played with the revolver and the big hammer guy, then hanzo, and I really like it!.

Shorter games than in TF2, more variety and very fun!

Congrats.
We aren't getting invited anyways.

It's true, we're not going to get in. :(

The one-sided matches are really getting on my nerves. I really hope they pour some effort into the matchmaking system because I am getting really sick of matches that end up where half the game leaves, winning or losing.

huh

Hopefully they will need more people in their Beta for a stress test. Big wave please!

Well assumption would be, to run a stress test, they had to setup a ton of server stuff. After the weekend is done, they might keep a good bunch of it opened, and invite people. I think it'd make sense, kinda. Then again they've said they want a really small beta because reasons and stuff so don't know.

24hour maintenance sucks though.

Nobody knows. They only announce on Twitter once they've finished flagging a wave.
Ahhhhh.
First overwatch weekend stress test announced (This weekend)

Correct me if am i'm wrong, but the people who get flagged for the stress test weekends, can only play for those weekends right. ?
I did get myself flagged for this at least by talking to someone :D
Congrats.
Don't suppose you can get me in too, please. :P

I wish I could :( I actually just happened to get really lucky getting in contact with them, and they wouldnt even flag me for the real one! If I was close to that person, I'd totally help you!

It should be interesting to see how well Blizzard's prepared for a larger test. Even if I'm not invited, I'll be watching closely this weekend to see how things go.

That's what I've come to understand, but I think (hope) they might 'upgrade' weekend accounts to full-time testing accounts sometime in the future as the beta scales up towards release.

Sigh, I bedtime part of this beta, and I need to be part of it now.

Every time I check my battlenet account my heart sinks.

I usually have pretty good luck with blizzard betas too...

Yes, I think it's time you went to bed. Rest ye head weary beta wanderer.

Fingers crossed for us all.

It's cool, i appreciate the sentiment though.

Ahh, that's a shame, i hope they would upgrade them.

They probably have a pretty good matchmaking system already there, since they could just copy what they've used in their other games. It's probably just a combination of too few players and too little data on them right now.

The matchmaking was updated on yesterday's patch, did you notice any changes?

Great new video about the state of the beta.

The changes to torb and bastion early next year will involve making them less devastating to new players, but more competitive for experienced players. Excited to see what that will mean! Also, they are for sure going to tweak mercy's ult, since they agree having it cast at the end is too much of a negative change, but they don't want it to be as powerful as it was before the change.

I would assume that they are going to make it so Bastion doesn't kill as fast, but can't be so easily countered either.

Someone asked if there will be a gay character in Overwatch at the panel and they said yes but Chris Metzen said they're taking their time and don't want it to feel like "pandering". I wonder how they'll reveal the character as a gay male/female with the games structure. I guess something to look forward to

I feel like one will be Tracer, since she's so well liked already the writers might see it as zero-risk
(the Ellie principle)
, though it would be a bit stereotypical to make the fun tomboy a lesbian. I think D.Va, Symmetra or Mercy would be far more inspired choices as "traditionally sexy and feminine" women, but that would require a bit more finesse from a writing standpoint.

Reaper or Hanzo would be really interesting choices on the male side, but I'd personally love to see Reinhardt be the one. I don't think I've ever seen an immensely badass old man who happened to be gay in fiction, so there's some neat ground to break.
