Overwatch Beta Thread: Cheers Love, The Beta's Here!

I don't care about a character's sexuality in a video game of all things (especially a non-story driven game where characters just frag each other over and over) and I'm frankly annoyed that there are people who are honestly, seriously wondering about that, but if we're really trying to guess who's gay, my money's on Zarya.

Call me cynical, but Blizzard/Metzen is a master of clichés when it comes to writing these days. One only has to look at Starcraft II and Diablo III. In that context, writing the only buff female character with pink hair as a lesbian seems so obvious.

[EDIT] @Dead Prince: although Winston would be kinda funny. It wouldn't be the first time his voice actor, Crispin Freeman, has played a gay character or expressed the desire to play one.

I'm watching Giant Bomb's video on this and after being skeptical at first I really want into this damn beta lol. This game looks fantastic.

If it wasn't seen as important enough to garner speculation, Blizzard A) Wouldn't have commented on it or B) Would've just outright said who the characters were. Personally, I'd prefer the latter because it's more natural than making sexual orientation a guessing game, but they didn't go that route.

I don't think it'll be Zarya. If making Tracer or Lucio gay would be stereotypical, making Zarya gay would be damn-near offensive. I also don't think any of the robots, non-humans or scumbag-ish humans will be gay, out of fear that it'll be treated as a joke.

Again, Reinhardt and Mercy would be my pics as a writer, because old and femme gay characters are a a serious rarity.

i didn't know that about his VA. maybe it's destined. just something about Winston giving me that vibe.

When will we know if were flagged, like what time?

Blizzard said they will start flagging accounts during the schedule maintenance which runs from 10 AM PST today to 9 AM PST tomorrow. So you should start checking in about 10 mins and continue checking for the next 23 hours.

May fate smile upon you this morrow, and bestow upon you the chance for a beta weekend... good luck to all. May your F5 key bring you an early Christmas delight.

Hopefully see you all on the Overwatch field...

I feel like one will be Tracer, since she's so well liked already the writers might see it as zero-risk
(the Ellie principle)
, though it would be a bit stereotypical to make the fun tomboy a lesbian. I think D.Va, Symmetra or Mercy would be far more inspired choices as "traditionally sexy and feminine" women, but that would require a bit more finesse from a writing standpoint.

Reaper or Hanzo would be really interesting choices on the male side, but I'd personally love to see Reinhardt be the one. I don't think I've ever seen an immensely badass old man who happened to be gay in fiction, so there's some neat ground to break.

The twist is that it's Zenyatta. No one ever suspects the robot.

I'm in class right now and can't check my client, unfortunately. They also said that emails would be later than the updated clients.

I agree that it's pretty pointless. If we're trying to guess, it could be literally every character in the game that's gay (aside from Bastion perhaps because he's a non-advanced AI). None of the voice lines indicate one way or the other so you could read into any and all of the cast in that sense. Because of this, Blizzard saying "at least one character might be gay but we're not saying who" might actually be an ingenious response.

But honestly I would have much preferred it if they just revealed it organically, (maybe in one of the upcoming shorts or something) instead of having people poke and prod them for a gay character, but it's too late for that now.

Crispin Freeman is best when playing anti-villains. I have no clue why he voices winston.

Hope lots of people on gaf get in to the beta weekend because I would love to hear more impressions. Being in the beta for a few weeks now and the game is still as fun as ever (most shooters would lose my interest by now).

roadhog best hero

EDIT - nevermind - it's down for 24 hours STARTING at 1PM EST.

So, nobody can play until tomorrow presumably, including the Twitch Testers, err, I mean the "BETA" testers.

;)

I cannot believe how I am still not in this one. Blizzard...all those years of faithfulness, and I only sinned with Path of Exile for like a year.... is this how you punish me? :(

Checked my battle.net account. Saw the Overwatch logo and then read "Pre-purchase Overwatch® now!" Goddamn trolls got me excited for a second there.

Yea, same here LOL

I also got a couple Blizzard Store/Newsletter advertising Emails that got me all excited for nothing too.

Interestingly I pretty much never get those types of emails from blizzard anymore. They don't even end up in my spam folder.

Good evening Overwatchers.
Another wave i didn't get into, now if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go into a corner and cry.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't started guys, check back in a few hours, we can't even play until tomorrow at 9amPST as I recall.

Flagging's not over. Probably didn't even start yet. gutshot summed it up nicely:

I'm gonna be depressed if I get into the beta weekend.

I came home yesterday for thanksgiving week and I left my PC at college. Lmaooo =( didn't find out about the beta weekend until after the fact. But it's for the best, I have a lot of business to take care of and it'd be a huge distraction.

For Nvidia Users, a new driver just released for the Overwatch beta. Beta ran great prior to this new driver, so I wonder how it'll run now. SLI support would be awesome

Nothing over here (US), but I expect the invites to go out more towards the evening (when the team is done for the day and heading home). They're probably working really hard on the servers right now to prep for tomorrow!
I keep refreshing my email. Hoping most, if not all of us in here get in and get some playtime.
Blizzard has said that the emails can be delayed pretty substantially. F5ing your account management page is the most direct way to see if you got in.

Welp, I got into the beta, but like I said I can't even play due to my gaming PC being at college. To be clear this flag is JUST for this weekend though, right? I assume it's not a permanent beta flag.

Whatever the case this gives me a bit of hope for future chances.

Noticing that some heroes have 3 abilities and an ultimate whereas others only have 2 abilities and an ult. Is that balanced? What gives?

You should try and play it with your current PC, Blizzard apparently focused on having the game run on lower and medium spec PCs.

You should try it out, the worst case scenario is a waste of time.

If number of skills equated to the most powerful hero, that would be like saying Invoker in Dota 2 is the best hero because he has 14 abilities

I would love to, except that the laptop I brought home is a Mac.

EDIT: Now that you mention it, I do have an older Windows laptop lying around... Its max res is 1366x768 or something so it's not unreasonable. Hmmmm
