Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 |OT| Perfect Pac-Man

It's an interesting new mechanic to be sure, but frankly it's an awful feeling when you have precious few seconds left on the clock, you're on a decent Score Attack run, and you just can't get at those ghost trains! I feel this, especially when coming off the back of DX, where chomping ghost trains was an intensely satisfying and rewarding experience.

The Adventure levels throw those sorts of scenarios at you and it's equally frustrating as time expires. But definitely on the positive, memory and reflexes will improve!

Great to hear your impressions!

Ever since I first heard the announcement of this game, I thought of you and time trials on the 360, lol.

I expect to see your name on the leaderboards shortly :p

Yeah, I tried a stick with CE and DX as well. It just doesn't feel right.

When I actually played pac-man or ms. pac-man in arcades I'd use my right hand and doing that with my qanba just feels wrong. Oh well.

Using a stick was great for CE. For this variant and even DX, I wouldn't recommend it. There are just certain instances when I don't believe it would be an accessory. Both versions feel less free in maneuvering.

Nice spot! Got DX, never played it before.

Oh, maybe you have 8 more days on this sale. I thought it was only hours left.

Only bad thing about the Museum is that it seems to force full screen without any graphics options, unless I missed it. Still worth it for $5 for collection purposes, but Ms. Pac-Man being separate $5 DLC is lame.

Great to see you here mate! Man, those time trials . . . and Half was just the best thing ever. Asterra/Maruku (arguably the master of DX Score Attack) has posted his impressions over on the FAQs board (PS4), and he's gone into some great detail too. Are you on the Xbox One? (I've moved across to PS4!)

Ahem, I did sneak in a PS4 #1 last night on CH-II expert (3.7M)--but I expect the scores will rise (or have risen) significantly as we all get used to these ghost trains!

FUCK!

Downloaded the game, "Error CE-30005-8 has occured. You will be logged out." Only game that does this.

Unfortunate to hear such mixed opinions on this game. I was expecting Namco to hit this once out of the ballpark after DX+.

Unfortunately, I don't expect a heck of a lot from Namco. Feel like they converse with Sega at the urinal. The last few Pac-Man releases have been exceptions to the rule.

Man the score 5,000,000 points missions that they add to world 6 are nuts in pro mode

I've gotten through everything but 6-4 and 6-6 at this point, which are both snapping my pitiful efforts like a twig, and I have no idea how to squeeze out more points in the time allotted short of doing just fabulously well catching ghosts.

edit: hah! fuck you, 6-4.

:lol

After playing more last night I still like it better than DX+, but not more than CE.

Loving it six plus hours in. The different modes all seem to be really well done. I think if you liked Championship edition there's a really good chance you'll at least get some entertainment out of this. Pellet paths and death not being that huge of a deterrent are true to an extent but upping the difficulty takes care of one of those complaints.

The tutorial gives it a far worse appearance than it should. Makes everything seem different and overly complicated for what the game should be but playing the main game puts it all together really well. I don't think I've hit the brake button once since leaving the tutorial so don't let that put you off either.

Moving fruit, power pellets and ghost trains are destroying my otherwise decent score attack runs. I've actually run out the power pellet timer at least once or twice on my Champ II extreme runs last night.

I feel like the devs saw how people were playing CE and DX+, and they thought how the game doesn't have enough RNG elements in it so they decided to put in some real crazy ones.

Also, not a fan of the ultra combo ghost eating cinematic. I lose track of the running timer and where the other ghost trains are. Makes a good run impossible to do in this game as you have to guess where they've run off to.

the only time i use it is when im mashing Replay on adventure mode and i accidentally start a round braking lmao. dont know if im hurting myself in score attack by not utilizing it

The min specs seem really high for what it is. Did somebody check out the performance on a modern Intel GPU?
I'm playing on an i5 6500...I'm not entirely sure I have a problem or not. It looks fine, but I've had an issue where the music stops early with like 40-50 seconds left. My theory is that the game might be running slow drawing all frames rather than dropping/skipping to keep pace, which would explain the music ending early.

I bought a 360 to play CE way back (and Trials HD). It'll be amusing if I end up buying a GPU (before I planned to) just for Pacman.
tried my fight stick theory. did worse than I was doing using the d-pad. analog stick it is

What gate are you guys using? I had my 360 in my cab and played CE/DX on there fine, but I have octo gates. I've played them on a square before and it's a massive pain. If you're on squares you could try popping out and rotating the insert to play 4 way (at least if the inserts support it...).

That said I'd say there was still an adjustment period for me, but once I got a hang of it I much preferred playing with a stick.

This is the result I get from the PlayStation website. Have you tried Safe Mode yet?

Eat it, adventure mode.

Last night I decided to try and unlock the Galaga characters and holy crap, that's gonna be tough! 222 stars are needed to face the final boss stage -- so 3 stars on pretty much every stage. Has anyone done it yet? I just looked at the PS4 trophies and it says 0.1% have cleared area 6-15 so far.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying the game and I'm liking the new twists to the gameplay. The new Jumping course is nuts on Extreme -- I'm looking forward to learning it better.

To me, even with the adventure mode, it feels like the first one had much more to do in terms of game modes.

The content is there, but only if you're a score chaser, really. I barely touched any of the modes other than 5min score attack on CE-DX, so I'm pretty happy with the content.

I tried playing with a stick for a while on CE-DX, and tried it with a rotated square-gate but I still found myself scoring/playing better with the analogue thumbstick. I assume playing on a 4-way (rotated square) gate would be the best option for a stick. So far on CE2 I've just tried (PS4) d-pad and analogue stick and I'm still preferring the analogue stick.

Hit the #2 and #7 leaderboard spots on Highway Single Train and Normal earlier today (PS4). After a bunch of hours with the game, though, I still hate the ghost train mechanic. Too much dumb luck involved in positioning them for quick takedowns, especially considering they frequently jump off the tracks they're supposed to follow.

Thanks for the feedback. My specs should be enough to run it too! I'll report about any issues in the thread.

I'm getting this as well. Worse cpu than yours and music stops with ~1:40 left.

Playing it again right now (first time was just really late last night) I'm pretty sure it's running a little slow, switching down to 720 doesn't seem to change anything. It's still fast enough that it feels fine to play at least. I'll try to mess around with it some more.

Edit: wonder if it's rendering at 1080 or whatever and scaling down, which would explain the lack of improvement. Would something like gedosato be able to screw around with that if that's the case?

Well, that's #1 on almost* every Extreme leaderboard on PC. Let's see how long that stands.

*friggin 12k off on Mountain. You'll get yours, 'nahucirujano'.

Why would that be? DX plays very differently from CE, and they're still pretty straightforward games with simple rules. CE 2, on the other hand, feels like they launched random ideas during a desperate brainstorming session just to be different, and then decided to keep everything and cram it all into a single game without bothering to make a consistent whole out of it.

The "boss battles" seem to be there just because someone yelled "BOSS BATTLES" at a meeting, not because it was needed or relevant or fun or meaningful.

I meant the game needed changes, not specifically making it more complex. People are reporting it's not that complex anyway (though not having played, I can't comment).

Still, there is a limited number of ways you can change something and keep it simple and functional. At some point you have to choose between adding complexity or breaking something.

I haven't been following the entire thread, but has namco commented on what is going on with the controls? On a DS4 it simply feels unresponsive sometimes. I've missed so many turns thinking it had already read my input to turn.

I had a similar problem yesterday, and it turned out to be something a little silly. I'd finished a run and wanted to try again for a better score, so I hit 'triangle' to restart. If you press triangle on the results screen you get a replay of your run though, not a restart -- so I was playing along for quite a while without realising I wasn't even playing at all.

Apart from that little incident I've found the controls to be top-notch and as responsive as I'd hope any to be. I'm pretty sensitive to input latency too and have hated a few games that most loved due to this.

I've also done this, and when I thought I'd triggered a bomb (PS4 X button) the screen faded out/exited the replay! Oops.

Eat it, adventure mode.

Well done (and on the high scores!) :). Makes me a bit queasy thinking about completing this mode.

Well done (and on the high scores!) :). Makes me a bit queasy thinking about completing this mode.

There's ultimately only a handful of courses (4-10, 5-4, 5-9, 6-4, and 6-6) that really gave me problems. The good news is that if you can clear it, you will have gotten better at the game by the end.

Finally got my code from Amazon and played the first two stages. The only thing I really don't like is how eating ghosts works. The disorienting cutscenes I can deal with, but not being able to eat multiple ghost trains simultaneously and having to eat them from the front is just annoying. The latter part is especially irritating with how fast they can get.

Other than that, it feels like the Super Pac-Man/Pac & Pal to DX's Pac-Man. A lot of changes and additions made that aren't necessarily bad, just not quite as fun as the previous one.

The more you play, you learn better methods and patterns to cut then off. I kind of like that segment, but the bumping animation and sound makes me shudder.

One thing I'm not grasping in this game: Do power pellets get set up for a reason, or are they preset to a specific stage/time in any given level?

They show up on the levels with a lot of ghosts (usually a bunch of clusters of 3). No real reason beyond you've presumably already collected a bunch of ghosts, finish it off by gathering a ton and purging them

The number of fruit boards between pellets varies from course to course. Once you get deep enough you'll always start seeing nothing but pellet boards, which is usually where the clock will run out (unless you've really been blowing through a single train course, in which case it is possible to loop back to fruit boards).

Am I the only one who has train ghosts going where they want, not following their route? I think they drew the routes differently than what they programmed, sometimes they just go where the fuck they want and losing 10 seconds chasing the head makes me want to shatter the pad.

Is this the best Pac Man available on PS4. Been looking for a fun and easy game to play with the wife. Upon searching i've come across Pac Man Championship Edition, Championship Edition 2, and Pac Man 256. Never playing any of the previously mentioned, what would be my best choice?

Only Championship Edition 2 is on PS4, CE 1 is only via PS Now (and I think that's DX)

256 is different, it's a port of a mobile game. I haven't played that.

If you are looking for straight up Pac Man there are Namco's Arcade Classics of Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man.

CE2 is basically taking Pac Man and turning it into a weird/crazy new thing akin to something like recent Trials entries or even Trackmania.

I've seen them go off track but still in an obvious pattern. It's annoying though as it always seems to happen to me in the last few seconds of a round.

256 is fun for about an hour until you realize that you've already mastered what little depth is on offer without trying very hard, and that the game expects you to grind for ages to unlock new abilities that are usually worse than the ones you have. Also, there's no music aside from a 5 second jingle on the title screen. So yeah, definitely get CE 2.

Yeah, it's just like they forgot to draw some rails. Sometimes the pattern gets too small, so they just keep steering left and rotate around a single pillar.
It will surely get patched, still weird that something happening so commonly is still there at day one.

Yeah, square gate here. Wasn't willing to get an octo just for Pac-Man but I've since wanted one for other arcadey games. I've accumulated enough sticks now that I'm considering sacrificing on just for that..
