Pachter blames PS3 for GTA IV delay

rockstar desperately needs the holiday revenue from GTA sales, so if only the PS3 version were the culprit, they would've delayed the PS3 version while releasing the 360 one. But clearly thats not what happened.....

Making a PS3 SKU caused Kane and Lynch's delay, making a X360 SKU caused a DMC4 delay.

In this case I agree that it seems like both versions are behind schedule. PS3 version has never been shown and the X360 version was shown with bad framerates and pop-up. It's a shame, but we'll get a better product in the end.

This gen is a whole lot of waiting, I love these really epic and ambitious games but waiting for them sucks. Next-gen is going to be even worse with large budgets and more workers and man hours needed to make a AAA title. At some point there needs to be a limit, I don't want to wait 4 years with X720/PS4 for a AAA GTA :/

Hell even this gen I'll be surprised if we get 2 GTAs on X360/PS3.

I gotta tell you, Post #1 makes for great reading. Highly recommended.

MS just says "**** it!" and buys T2 outright.

CONFIRMED!

Seriously, though. Does the stock price tanking make it cheaper/easier for another company to purchase? I know T2 isn't in the best financial health.

Well, they still have to agree to a sale and... It would take a lot still, and TakeTwo still has value as a company.

But didn't they try to sell TakeTwo in the Spring and there were no takers? Or was that just a rumor? I know there has been an on-going stockholder rebellion at T2.

This thread needs speculawyer.

If this did happen GAF's servers would crash 1 minute after it was announced, meltdowns would be epic and the sheer amount of denial would be incredible.:lol

Market cap slightly above 1 billion dollar. That's not pocket change.

That 1/12th of profit MS made last quarter.:lol

Because Sony didn't spend all of last week going on about how they are letting GTA4 be a multiplatform release and secured something else for the future. It's incredibly believable that Sony moneyhatted a day and date release of GTA, especially because them giving TT permission to release it on the 360 MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL.

I'm sorry... I guess I didn't think anyone actually believed Tretton when he implied that Sony had something to say in the matter.

BTW: if Sony had the kind of authority over Rockstar that would retain exclusivity (unless they let it go multiplat), why would they have to moneyhat a day-and-date release? I'm sorry, but your post does not make sense.

Both versions are probably far from finished, with the PS3 version presumably being in worse shape if its never been displayed to any journalists.

Take 2 might realize that if they release a GTA game and it pisses a lot of people off from being buggy and/or imcomplete, they could suffer more in the long run.

It boggles the mind that $200M of stocks evaporated like that.

I dunno why I continue putting myself through this but uhhhh:

1. Simultaneous release
2. First GTA game on next-gen systems
3. An almost complete overhaul of GTA(comparable to the jump from GTA2 to GTA3)

Looking at this how can one simply say that the delay was caused by either the PS3 or the 360?

To me it looks more like neither game was near-completion and Rockstar tried to do too much at once with the time they had. So thus a delay.

I'm pretty sure it was just a rumor stemming from other happenings.

I assume this means that PS3 will get Halo 3, since last month or so, Pacther were blabbering about GTA would get delayed since it couldn't compete with Halo 3.

Hey, 360 repairman!!!
You forgot your tool at Wedbush Morgan...

I'm pretty sure that if they had done as they did with their previous games, concentrated on the PS-version first, then port it over to PC, and 360 in a half year, we would not have gotten Rockstars first major delay on their game.

I don't think that's enough time to fix the glitches. if the 360 version is so broken; imagine how terrible the ps3 version must be.

this game is going to disappoint.

they shud have taken advice from other first party developers, develop on PS3, then port to 360.

You still get both audience, but oh is it so much easier

Ugh... Of course no one believes Sony let R* go multiplatform. The thing is, how the hell does something like that even get said? It makes no sense unless the deal they reached about a multiplatform release was really about whether or not the PS3 version would come out after the 360.

First of all your are crazy. They will have the engine built at GTA IV. We will really get at least 2 GTAs for the PS3 and 360.

If this is true then we should get a very polished 360 version.

How do I invest in stock markets?

Seriously question. I want to make money like Nintendo.

This will go along really well with my pumpkin and pine tree short-swing profit strategies.

This may be true, but N'Gai's article sounds right to me too, and it's backed up by recent impressions of GTA4 that criticized the game heavily for the bad framerate and lacking graphics. Even if the PS3 version was having difficulties, I think the 360 version was also weak enough to justify a delay.

Well a lot of games that get delayed to "spring" end up coming out the following autumn, with Half-Life 2 being the most obvious example.

The difference is that Valve is self-owned and can afford to be as laughably slow as they want to be. Take 2 needs Rockstar North to get this game out as soon as possible, which is already next spring at the earliest.

They probably could have benefitted from doing an LCS/VCS double pack and marketing it well but opted for the quick ports at $19.99 each. It'll be interesting to see how they make it through this. Bioshock looks amazing but is probably not going to sell proportionate to its quality.

Yeah they'll barely be able to make 2 GTA's this gen, last gen we got 3.

And if not, wouldn't Microsoft be (t)rolling out the PR men to make sure everybody knew it?

But whatever the deal was, you have to agree that Microsoft paid more than Sony. Considering Microsoft paid more for two pieces of GTA DLC than Sony spent on this:

I think its safe to assume that Rockstar owes a lot more to MS than Sony right now.

It's actually more than that . . . the stock had been hovering in the 20s for a while and only very recently dropped below $20 . . . clearly there were leaks from insiders that a delay was imminent and the stock started going down.

that's just speculation by Pachter

me, I suspect its the 360's extra downloadable content that caused the delay

Analyst questions Rockstar's capability

No doubt making himself popular with Sony, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has stated that he believes the complexity of development for the PS3 platform has resulted in the delay of Grand Theft Auto IV from October 2007 until Q2 2008.

Pachter believes publisher Rockstar have a contractual obligation to Sony, which means the Xbox 360 cannot get GTA IV before the PS3, hence why both versions of the title have been delayed despite the development issues primarily surrounding the PS3.

"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognise how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," Pachter states.

"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favour competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version."

Pachter hints that Take-Two shareholders are unlikely to be greatly pleased by this delay, hinting that procedural issues at the firm may be partly to blame for this slippage.

"While the delay of GTA IV was clearly not the fault of new management, we believe that it should have been better understood several months ago, and should have been communicated to investors much earlier than today," Pachter comments.

"The company has begun an initiative to improve the green light process for new projects, but given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure."

Wow ... what a jackass.

The 360 version is a complete turd as is. Neither version is ready.

Oh well.

And as I've stated a million times before this delay has nothing to do with a particular console. Just ignore Pachter(and me) and move on.

Guys, come on, the overall incompleteness of the game led to this delay, not the PS3 version.

The PS3 version will be why GTAIV gets delayed to fall '08.

ugh wasnt the 360 version shown in a buggy mess last week ?
I've seen a lot of people saying that... but all I've seen is IGN saying there was some framerate issues and pop-up. Can anyone point to this "buggy mess" that was demoed?

what's the problem?

Besides the admittedly fanboy "rise to heaven" post earlier, I'm arguing against some fanboy conspiracy.

Most people here are saying PS3 killed GTA4, a few are saying DVD9 killed it. I'm saying Rockstar killed it.
