Pacific Rim confuses, enrages internet narcissists

This type of thread is a prime example of what is wrong with the internet today. Pacific Rim is a great movie and it accomplished every single thing it set out to do, not understanding what that was is fine and it's super easy to type "I hated this movie but I don't think it was for me". Instead , most people just write up "this movie was complete fucking garbage and everyone who has a different opinion should just fuck off and die in a fire and also I'm better than the idiots who enjoyed it because I hate things nerds like".

This is utter bullshit to put it bluntly. The opposite is unfortunately true as well, you see a movie or play a game you love and instead of just proclaiming "I love this thing, people should give it a try" it gets turned into "This thing is awesome and people that dislike it should drink a gallon of poison and leap into a wood chipper feet first with the chew speed on slow".

It's all hatred boners and fangasms that seem to require insulting anyone who doesn't agree with you instead of simply enjoying or disliking something of your own accord.

I used to get mad about this stuff thinking "how can 'they' no like this thing I really like" but it's just not worth it. Instead I'm more sad that the enjoyment I got out of something like Pacific Rim can't be shared by all for whatever reason - differing standards, upbringing, expectations, etc etc. My hope is that there is some kind of movie out there for everyone that just hits all the notes they want from a film.

The only time it still bugs me is when someone goes full contrarian and seems to hate absolutely everything, it's very difficult to take a person seriously when they don't like anything , except seemingly out of spite for those who dislike it. The opposite is true as well but enjoying everything isn't nearly as annoying as hating everything.

You don't even need the shit comic.
Saying that the blood creates an enviromental disaster and looking a jaeger punching a kaiju is more than enoght for your INTELIGENCE to DEDUCE why they are punching kaijus and not exploding kaijus =P

Which is why it is so infuriating how "brainless movie" and "why didn't they started with the sword" are ALWAYS next to each other =P

I know the movie has SERIOUS problems (specialy when there is no Jaeger on screen) but the sword is NOT one of then

It is the movies own fault for being fast and loose with the environmental disaster blood angle. Remember when they killed the kaiju then decided to shoot it several more times splattering the blood everywhere just to make sure it was dead? Yeah that doesn't fit with the blood is dangerous thing. They are constantly ripping the kaiju apart limb by limb, using rotary saws and giant guns to blast them to bits, and so the statement that the blood is mildly toxic is of little consequence as they don't behave like it is of consequence. The sword not being used earlier doesn't make sense when the Asian robot guys are using a rotary saw as an opener (or near enough), and literally every fight ends up having massive amounts of blue blood dispersed over a wide area and usually in the water.

I can understand completely complaints about acting, or pacing, or whatever but

it builds up nice but the faults soon start to emerge: the robots fight the monsters always in a very dark setting, the cinematography during fights is mediocre at best. These 2 problems make the battles hard to follow, confusing and disorienting. Why would you waste your shiny CGI and special effects in poorly lit environments? I didnt know what was happening, just seeing pretty graphics.
The battles are awful, all the robots do is boxing against sea monsters, its like Real Steel but on a much bigger ring.

What? Did we really watch the same movie? Most of the fights were lit just fine through various ways and it was goddamn great fight choreography that you could actually follow, with events and shots linked coherently so that I always felt like I knew what was going on.

For people who call Pacific Rim a dumb movie:

The Visual Intelligence of Pacific Rim

I'm not suggesting that post ends the argument, but it makes a lot of good points and highlights a number of often overlooked details that are rather important if you're interested in evaluating the movie on its actual merits.

I feel like most of the depth this is trying to point out is pretty obvious from just watching the movie. I'll admit that I didn't make the connection between adult Mako's hair and child Mako's jacket, but not making that connection didn't stop me from realizing Mako actively carried around the baggage of her childhood trauma (given, you know, her career choice and I think some dialogue referencing the shoe.) That she idolized Idris Elba and was being forceful to get what she wanted also seemed pretty obvious from the text.

The section on the Cherno Alpha pilots reads similar to any fan overanalysis of background characters; they have limited time on-screen and the presence of character-building movements in shots clearly meant to build their character doesn't really make them surprisingly deep.

It's not a bad post, but aside from the hair color thing it's not really anything you couldn't pick up from the movie itself. And I don't think that the movie having some clever uses of color and non-verbal character development precludes it from being, overall, pretty dumb as a whole product.

The script isn't bad, it's just banal. It lacks the right energy or uniqueness to really elevate it but it's serviceable for what the movie is doing. What the film is doing is showcasing tropes/homages from others works in its own style. From that perspective, I think the film is absolutely fantastic. The mecha fan in me gets to sit down and look at where these ideas came from and what works it harkens back to while enjoying the visuals and decent characters.

But guys! It was full of cliches intentionally - it's supposed to be bad. Thats what makes it good, right?

except thats not how it works. its still a terrible movie even if its "bad" intentionally.

These posts close together pretty much sum up the thread for both sides it seems.

Can this post get its own thread? Beautiful stuff, right here.

I just thought the Movie was too disconnected from its own reality. There was no sense of danger i felt for the citizens, it was only to the humans inside the machines

Apart from the CGI, I think the rest of the movie was quite mediocre like the acting and script. However, the movie is great fun to watch. That's all that should matter right?

It is kids movie.

If i could take seriously this movie it would be up there with Aliens vs Predator - Requiem. Honestly even Transformers at least tried some acting and plot.

I'm a big fan of Japanese mecha anime shows so I was pretty excited when news came out of Hollywood making a big budget live action robot movie. The trailer looked pretty cool, director seemd like a good choice, he is a talented director as he has proved with Pan's Labyrinth, it was a fun fantasy flick. Unfortunatly I didn't have the chance to see PR in theatres and had to wait out on the bluray release, borrowed from my friend and finally found time to watch it last night.

PR is a huge let down, it builds up nice but the faults soon start to emerge: the robots fight the monsters always in a very dark setting, the cinematography during fights is mediocre at best.
The acting was bad and becomes immediately apparent, you can't even relate to the father-daughter angle because the characters are so uninteresting and script is just dreadful. The dialogues are emberassing. There is no plot, its full of cliches.
They introduce Mako, her screentime increases and you expect her to play a major part but right at the climax she turns into a silent character who watches the other pilot do his thing and motivate him from the sidelines.

There is not a single attempt at suspense and the sad part is... there is no need to, nothing gets me excited, all just dull, you already know whats going to happen as its filled with cliches.

Humanity has invented swords, shields, guns, rockets etc and the main weaponry of the jaegers consists of punching the enemies? Wtf? Why do they even need to engage them in close quarter combat when they house rockets in their chests?
The bird Kaiju takes the Gipsy danger to space(as ridicilous as it is coming from under the ocean), the pilots suddenly realize they had a SWORD all the time!
They didnt think about killing the earlier Kaijus with the sword that goes through the monsters like a knife through butter.
Preposterous and insulting the viewer's intelligence.

I can't take it anymore, this is the worst film I've seen in 2013. There is little effort put into story and characters, the film presents a relentless series of cliches and tedious robot fights, sugar coated in shiny effects. Ending the year on a very bad note.

This movie was great fun. You missed the point, OP. The real question is why this film only made about 14 million in Japan? WTF?

The blue connection is a great point, but that whole wall of text defending Mako as a great female protagonist is negated by her being totally sidelined at the conclusion.

It is normal. Even shitty mecha anime is more interesting and has better plot and acting than PR.

I will say that just because people love that film for some unknown reasons it doesn't mean it is good movie for other people

And i don't get "goal" of movie. If we review movies by their "goals" to achieve then disney stuff is Godfather tier quality movies...

Yeah let get mad for people for voicing their opinion, its already hard to do at real world they shouldn't do it at internet too!

Look at least OP word what he annoyed with clearly, that's what matter for this kind of statement.

Opinions, the thread.

I personally enjoyed it a lot, but I also go out of the way to enjoy the things life throws at me. It's why I can have amazing sex with girls the establishment tells me are ugly, or why I can enjoy food that would allegedly me puke. That's not to say that I can't distinguish between a classic Russian novel and the work of, say, J.K. Rowling, but even then, I can and will thoroughly enjoy something as trivial as Harry Potter.

In other words, some of you need to get laid.

The problem a lot of people have with the OP is that it's NOT clearly stated. Not like the posts from some like Kitsune where she clearly mentions the issues they had, whereas the OP made me question whether he actually paid attention to the film.

This movie wishes it had a quarter of the energy or flair of Gurren Lagann.

Don't compare this with GL

GL was actually unique and endearing.

I'm talking purely about the action that evokes the same visceral sense of awe. To me watching a hyper realistic sky scraper sized robot in the rain punching a Kaiju with brief slow motion that captures every bone crunching moment was every bit a "FUCK YEAH AWESOME" moment as the galactic size battle of GL.

Did you not read the very next paragraph where he says the opposite is just as problematic? Really?
The problem is that the opening states that the movie is great and if you dislike it it's because you don't understand how it accomplished everything it set out to do (and you should therefore just acknowledge it wasn't for you, as if your opinion is illegitimate).

I paid for a movie with Monster fighting Giant Robots, AND I GOT A MOVIE WITH MONSTERS FIGHTING GIANT ROBOTS.

It was enjoyable, and I really couldn't give less of a shit about this "higher than thou" attitude where people apparently expect to watch the movie at cocktail parties with monocles and analyze every fault and failing.

I think this more like:

- I watched ton of quality mecha anime and in comparison it look like shit from all sides.

VS

- FUCK !!!!! ROBOTS FIRST TIME EVER, WHOA, LOOK AT THAT PUNCH. SUCH FUN

yes everyone who liked pacific rim has never seen any media with giant robots in it

I liked the movie okay. It looked great and it doesn't feel cynical. I felt like there could have been more, but in no way were the fights hard to follow. If there were more to the characters, I would have embraced it more. It was good enough to me that I'd see a sequel.

I don't understand what it is about people who hate Pacific Rim that makes them get so, so angry, at the people who liked Pacific Rim.

You can list every dumb stupid reason why Pacific Rim is the worst movie ever and I'll just shrug and continue to love how awesome it was and how much fun I had watching it several times now. Yep, sure are a lot of possible plot holes. Doesn't matter. Still awesome.

Today I learned opinions can most certainly be undefiably wrong.

I agree - the acting in this movie is objectively bad, the script is objectively stupid/illogical, the fighting is objectively poorly choreographed, the pacing is objectively bad. I think people are just claiming to like this movie ironically. But the movie lost money, so the majority of fans had the right opinion. It's a dumber, worse looking version of Transformers.

I just wanted and entertaiment movie, simple plot, lots of fights and big ass robots, and is exactly what I got from it. I don't know why people expect deep and complex characters and award winning perfomances and plot from this kind of movies.

This post is objectively bad.

It's probably the simple dismissive replies. "No you're wrong. Giant robots punching!"
Beyond that I have no problem with people enjoying the movie.

I didn't get it, either, OP. Sure, it was fun to watch. But it was instantly forgettable afterwards. I needed some more exposition so I actually cared if the world ended. That, and there were plenty of holes.

Why didn't they use the sword earlier?
Why not just make a giant wall around the emergence hole?
Why didn't anyone think to bomb the hole earlier?
Why are the aliens attacking, anyway?

These all could of been explained via some good exposition, but the movie had none. It basically just threw the audience into "here, believe this." Which is fine for a popcorn movie, I guess. I don't understand why people are obsessed with it, though.

Holy shit, we just had this same thread 7 days ago.

I said much in the last thread, and I'll chime in again to say that the OP doesn't seem like he got a lot of the details the director was going for. That's fine, tastes can be different, but I feel like a lot of the movie just flew right over your head. Also, hyperbole much?

I'm not sure how serious I can take your thread since you are the same dude who made the 30fps thread as well ;)

Just read the first few posts on this website to figure out the why.

Joking or not the overwhelming response was that his opinion was objectively wrong.

Perhaps it is the manner in which you push your opinion that makes you so infuriating.

It reminds me of the bronies.

People expect movies in cinema to have better acting and plot than Disney Hannah Montana movie.

Without budget Pacific Rim would be DVD release.

Pretty sure the entire premise of PR was Robots and Monsters, not Academy Award winning performances that challenge the definition of ART!

The acting was tolerable, you're salty.

It's probably the simple dismissive replies. "No you're wrong. Giant robots punching!"

I guess that makes sense. I've mostly abstained from these threads because, yeah, my personal response is probably going to be something along those lines. Minus the "you're wrong" part.

It's probably the simple dismissive replies. "No you're wrong. Giant robots punching!"
Beyond that I have no problem with people enjoying the movie.

There are simple dismissive replies on both sides, and a handful of well reasoned arguments on both sides. But in these threads it always feels like most of the anger/hate is from the people who dislike the movie causing more defensiveness from people who liked it.

Holy shit, we just had this same thread 7 days ago.

And the open hostility/defensiveness of PR fans toward anyone who doesn't worship it is just baffling to me. It always immediately devolves into personal insults toward anyone who doesn't enjoy poorly-made art. You can make cheese that's still well-made and that isn't openly insulting to the audience.

I like how everyone's favorite word to describe the movie is "fun".

That's the same word you use to describe a bad date to the chick you were just stuck with for two hours.
