Pacific Rim confuses, enrages internet narcissists

I thought this forum ban R word for good reason, but hey let dump that.. good job whoever that did this, such consistency.

And the open hostility/defensiveness of PR fans toward anyone who doesn't worship it is just baffling to me. It always immediately devolves into personal insults toward anyone who doesn't enjoy poorly-made art. You can make cheese that's still well-made and that isn't openly insulting to the audience.

And Pacific Rim is a prime example of cheese that is not insulting to the audience. Transformers is a prime example of cheese that is tremendously insulting to the audience. The instant someone resorts to favorably comparing the Bay Transformers movies to Pacific Rim is the instant they've lost. It's an indefensible position.

Thread title changes are the best.

Which mod changed it? I know Evilore liked the movie when it came out.

Pretty sure it's the other meaning.

1.
Psychiatry. a pervasive developmental disorder of children, characterized by impaired communication, excessive rigidity, and emotional detachment: now considered one of the autism spectrum disorders.
2.
a tendency to view life in terms of one's own needs and desires.

Did they ever explain why they made such a big deal about needing the Kaiju DNA to get through the rift but then they didn't need it go get back through it the other way? Did they ever explain why they had a sword that only Mako knew about that could cut through the Kaiju but they never used it until it was almost too late? It seems like they should have just stuck one of those on every robot and used it right away.

Only applies when you bring up the Nazis or Hitler to make an inappropriately extreme comparison, not to point out someone else's fallacious reasoning with a stark analogy. So I think I'm in the clear.

Also, Godwin's Law is just a guideline to curb thoughtless overexaggeration. It doesn't magically render everything you said invalid.

Hmm, I don't remember saying it invalidated anything. It was a joke - I know everything is life and death in these threads, though. ;)

And I think the forum has had some great thread title changes this past week or so.

I think Pacific Rim threads have a special way of disabling my humor detector. I might occasionally slip into internet nerd defense mode.

No worries, man. Happens to all of us. :)

But really, the recent outrage against PR is kind of strange to me. It's not a perfect movie - it has some dumb plot elements and thin characterizations, but I had a blast with it. The movie accomplished what I expected it to accomplish.

Pacific Rim is slowly supplanting TDKR as that film for which there is a new thread of vociferous debate every week.

No, but it's pretty easily waved as like a regular ol' door. You need a key to get in unless it's unlocked but from the other side you can just unlock it and go out yourself.

Internet autists are different from real ones, who have no choice in the matter. The internet ones could probably cure themselves by leaving the house and conversing with people about something other than anime and video games.

My last ban was for a milder version of what's said in the new title.

Only if they do something that really deserves it.

Like disagree with you about a movie.

Whoever changed the title is srs about movies then, gotta put people down.

The mod title change is the worst title of the year

Yup.

Internet autists are different from real ones, who have no choice in the matter. The internet ones could probably cure themselves by leaving the house and conversing with people about something other than anime and video games.

You're still calling people autists - isn't that bannable?

Hmm... No, I don't like this sort of justification.

Thread title is double standard much.

"Autist" needs to stop being a fucking catch-all for people you find annoying, no matter how wrong their opinion is.
And it's just that, an opinion. No need to humiliate them like that, even if they are in the complete minority of GAF.

A giant robot hits a giant monster with a tanker ship like it's a baseball bat!
If that isn't enough I don't know what it will take to entertain you people!

The only thing I didn't really like was the whole wall sub plot and the 'underground' jaeger resistance, with a collosal facility, thousands of staff and multi billion dollar machines.

Before, the Jaeger program was a global effort involving most of the world's nations, trillions of dollars, constant production of Jaegers, eight Shatterdome bases, and likely hundreds of thousands of workers.

After the movie's opening, it's one Shatterdome, a pitiful few months of funding to close out the program, several hundred staff (I didn't see thousands anywhere), and four Jaeger (a new mark 4 model, a mark 3, OLD Mk 1, and a re-salvaged Mk 2). They're not literally hidden underground or a secret govt resistance, but Stacker is right nonetheless. From global military force to mere shadow of itself resisting an onslaught.

Add me to the list of people enraged by the thread title.

If I ever leave my bubble and go out into this dangerous world I will have words with whoever is responsible for this.

I guess I can see that, but it was a pretty big assumption to make on their part to shoot themselves back through the rift without knowing this for sure. What if they couldn't get back through in their pods? They'd just be floating there, waiting to die. I'd rather die in the explosion inside the robot than have that end.

The movie is bad on the level of Army of Darkness bad. With that in mind it is clearly an amazing tribute to all things monsters/giant robots/alien in the world of movies. I loved it but I also would not even consider putting the movie on the same level as say a serious movie such as Schindler's List.

All the hate this movie gets is really quite funny as I think the time people take to complain or get on soap boxes about their disdain over this film could clearly be spent watching more movies or reading books.

Get a grip people, it is a cheesy, campy, horrible movie and it deserves the cult status that it has achieved.

Perhaps the reason people really get pissed about this movie is that it is at the same level of a lot of other B movies and it had a blockbuster movie budget.

I loved it. Sorry I don't have much to add to that. It was a fun movie, with cool shit happening on screen. It didn't bore me once. As a child of the 80's, it felt like some of my favorite cartoons come to life.

What? I was merely commenting on the thread title, and now you want to see me banned?

That escalated quickly.

Sorry, lol, I didn't mean *you* when I said you. I meant people that called others autists - I figured that was bannable, and people have been banned for it before. Should it be different for a mod?
