PACIFIC RIM Wonder Con Footage

Why are all the scenes at night. :(

There's what, at least
four to six fights
in the film? With everything -- not saying that much -- they've shown, it looks like from the design of the monsters and the aesthetics, this is all just the one fight, probably around Hong Kong.

You can see machine guns and a blade in the trailer, rocket launchers and shoulder-mounted cannons in concept arts. I'm guessing they can do more than punch.

I remember reading somewhere that
the blood of the kaiju is extremely poisonous to the environment and will devastate all living things.
So they punch them into submission, rather than simply blowing them to hell.

I thought this was the greatest giant robot weapon EVAR until I saw the end of the WonderCon trailer...lol

Pacific Rim's comparisons to Eva are understandable...but it also draws a lot of parallels to Gunbuster, which was also Eva's Hideaki Anno's directorial debut. Gunbuster's two pilots, control system, ridiculous weapons, the 'humans as vermin'/'humans as bacteria' plot, and itself an homage to the giant robot genre...it's all there.

I'd totally mark out if something as epic as this happens in Pacific Rim:

CG really isn't up to par for what they're trying to pull off. And I can't get around how contrived the two dudes in mind sync thing is. And I keep thinking...do they give these giant robots weapons? Or did they build giant punching machines? And there's something about the way they're trying to convey size and weight of the robots and monsters that also makes them look slightly too slow, like they're under water. I get what they're trying to do in terms of scale but something about it isn't working.

I want to be on board with giant robots smashing it up with giant monsters, done right. But nothing I've seen in the footage looks appealing. :\

Striker Eureka is OP as hell, biggest kill ratio as well.

I love how the Russian Cherno Alpha is just a slow, lumbering behemoth; 3/10/10 haha.

Well it makes sense that the strongest Jaeger would be stationed the closest to the rift. It's also the newest Mark 5 mech. Japan is a Mark 1 and USA Mark 3. Not sure what the others are.

Man I don't get this at all. I rewatched it to make sure, the CG looks fuckin amazing to me.

It all looks amazing. The complaints are - yes I'll say it - a hipster douchebag reaction.

CGI has come so ridiculously far in such a short time, maybe some of the other posters don't or can't remember, but frankly every time I see "oof that cg looks so rough" I cannot roll my eyes hard enough. Even brutally sub-par cg looks miles better than what we had as state-of-the-art even 10-15 years ago. It's how some folks on here like to look, I suppose, discerning. We are swimming in ridiculously high quality computer animation these days and some are just intent on keeping that Louis CK bit alive and well.

CGI looks great to me too, though I don't know how a big ass robot fighting big ass monsters could look in real life so I guess I don't have a reference :P

I would largely agree with that statement.

Please, I know plenty of people at ILM who think the footage shown so far isn't up to their usual standards. It's not out of the question others may notice it as well. We'll see how much they can clean things up by release. Standards change and improve over time. If you're fine with it, why are you bothered by someone else if they think or know it could be better?

urgh, stop trying to sell this movie with that "CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE" line. It's putting me off, as is most of the dialogue offered in the trailers so far. Just do a bunch a cuts of robots fighting monsters with an occasional _very brief_ human exclamation, and leave me in the dark about just how bad the script is until I'm in the theater. I wasn't expecting it to be marvelous but you don't need to be so in my face about it. :(

This just feels like a cross between that Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots movie and Transformers with a little Godzilla thrown in. I was always a Godzilla fan back in the day, but this just looks terrible. The dialogue (at least with respect to the one-liners) is Michael Bay bad. The only reason I have any hope for the movie is because I loved the other Del Toro movies I've seen (Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy). I just don't understand all the hype for this.

Coyote Tango is a terrible name for a Japanese mech. Are there even coyotes in Japan? Might as well call it Hamburger Charlie.

It's also worth to note, the Japanese one is a Mark-1. It probably killed the first two Kaiju, that's why it's so weak and its kill count is low. Gypsy Danger is a Mark-3 while OP Aussie and China are both Mark-4.

In the original screenplay I read, there were about 8-10 battles, each different from the last. Lasers, swords, and all that jazz. GDT did say a lot has been changed, but I hope he keeps the number of battles in tact. My particular favourite was a spider-like creature that attacked Chile in the day, and its giant strands of hair on its leg were spear-like when swept off, piercing cars and all.

One of the best or one of the worst movies ever. There is no inbetween for this.

At this point I'm not sure I even care whether or not it's a good story or even a good movie. That robot hit that monster over the head with a GIANT SHIP. I'm paying to see this on the big screen. That trailer won my ticket.

just noticed that the japan jeager is controlled by one pilot while the chinese one by 3.

Guys, I just want Striker Eureka to deliver. Please, don't go down in the first 20 minutes of the film. Striker Eureka has the potential to get me more patriotic than I've ever been in my life. God bless Australia.

I haven't really been following, but I assume the
apparently solo-piloted Japanese mech gets trashed
leading to the union between two primary characters. ?

Anyway, trailer had the robot-loving kid inside me ecstatic. Though, as with others, immediately after there was the nagging feeling they did the usual dark/rain scenes to...cloud...issues with the cg rendering.

Man, they're gonna make the action for the pilots just as entertaining as watching the mechs fights. So smart to have it as full body movement.

I haven't been following this closely at all, but what their reason that two pilots mind-melding to control one giant robot makes more sense that just one person directly controlling a single robot? In cockpit drama?

You'd think the Coyote Tango would be a little less shit. I mean, this kind of thing is Japan's bread-and-butter, right?
I would imagine this isn't their first giant robot, right? They would have had older models that were destroyed or decommissioned.

Trailer pointed out that it uses memories from both pilots. I guess it gives the mech a larger moveset or maybe makes the mech smarter if two people piloted it instead of one.

What the fuck did I just see guys?!

THE GIANT ROBOT SMACKED THE MOTHERFUCKING SHIT OUT OF THAT MONSTER WITH A GOD DAMN SHIP!

I think I just shed a tear..

Which seems like a contrivance to have cockpit drama, to avoid a one man show behind the wheel.
