PAL Charts - Week 3, 2013

I thought the top 5's of each platform were quite telling of the very different userbases on each platform.

Vita:

1, NFS: Most Wanted
2, CoD Blops Declassified
3, LBP Vita
4, AC3 Liberation
5, FIFA 13

3DS:

1, Mario Kart 7
2, New Super Mario Bros 2
3, Paper Mario Sticker Star
4, Super Mario 3D Land
5, Mario & Sonic London 2012

I dunno, both lists seem filled with games which have high appeal among kids, with the exception of AC3.

We're seeing the same slumps in every other country.

Not to the same degree. I had hoped the digital market was affecting things but its not growing fast enough to make up for the retail crash.

Simply got to accept people have less money to spend and major entertainment retailers are having huge problems just running year to year. Meanwhile anyone whose been to the supermarket recently can probably tell that games are not as lucrative as they used to be for them.

UK will likely look worse when next-gen comes, fact is people have a lot less money to spend and other countries are growing whilst the UK contracts.

This is just how it is. Too often on gaf theres a lack of acceptance that money in pockets will affect the games industry. People only buying those top few games is evidence enough that people are concentrating their buying around a few titles.

To be fair, for all the talk of the economy and the death of retail, and this speculative mumble about next-gen systems doing no better, I think the fact that the Wii U is just a completely unappealing product probably plays a significant role here.

I'd be interested to see what the first week sales data was for DMC4 in the U.K., but I imagine that'd be difficult to scrounge up.

Reverse math time

If

4 4 SONIC & ALL STARS RACING TRANSFORMED
6 5 CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS II <330 (UNDER THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY UNITS)

then

Sonic Wii U = 330+

14 Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed (7+)
Xbox 360 (48) / PS3 (31) / Wii U (13) / VITA (9)

then total Sonic sales around 2540 so Vita version around 230

And we have Vita chart:

1 1 NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED CRITERION GAMES EA GAMES ELECTRONIC ARTS
3 2 CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS DECLASSIFIED NIHILISTIC SOFTWARE ACTIVISION ACTIVISION BLIZZARD
5 3 LITTLEBIGPLANET PS VITA TARSIER/DOUBLE ELEVEN SONY COMPUTER ENT. SONY COMPUTER ENT.
4 4 ASSASSIN'S CREED III LIBERATION UBISOFT (BULGARIA) UBISOFT UBISOFT
2 5 FIFA 13 EA CANADA EA SPORTS ELECTRONIC ARTS
6 6 VIRTUA TENNIS 4: WORLD TOUR EDITION SEGA SEGA SEGA
9 7 RAYMAN ORIGINS UBISOFT (CASABLANCA) UBISOFT UBISOFT
7 8 SONIC & ALL STARS RACING TRANSFORMED SUMO DIGITAL SEGA SEGA ~ 230
- 9 TOUCH MY KATAMARI NAMCO NAMCO BANDAI GAMES NAMCO BANDAI GAMES
8 10 UNCHARTED: GOLDEN ABYSS SCEA BEND SONY COMPUTER ENT. SONY COMPUTER ENT.

OT- who the hell is still buying Uncharted when you can get in PSN+?

Why act like everyone buys digital?

Its price and games are the biggest issue. Price more so as those who would want NSMBU aren't going to fork the cash out for it.
Price however is somewhere where next gen will also have troubles. If rumours specs are true I think MS is going to be in trouble as well.

But the overall market is having troubles. Don't think that top 50 has anything below 1k just because BLOPS2 U sold 300 copies.
Thats hardly driving sales. So NSMBU > 1k I'd suggest.

Still all numbers indicate big issues. The most worrying being that digital game sales are growing slower than other digital formats (music/film) despite being the biggest; so its not exactly going to make up for issues this year. Hopefully WiiU can rally about to some degree and 3DS can maybe get going off the back of releases (hopefully Vita too).

While I agree about the unappealing part in a broad sense, I do honestly believe that if Sony or MS had launched their consoles on the same day instead of Nintendo, it would be doing about the same. Maybe a stronger opening week depending on the launch line-up, but I do think by this point, the UK charts would be full of the same commiseration and laughter just with a different target.

Unless economic conditions improve over here, I wouldn't be shocked if any console launching in 2013 isn't initially delayed in Europe so they can get more inventory on US shelves in the early launch period. (and Japan if it's Sony)

So probably another over-shipped Capcom bomb? Just a third of what Devil May Cry 4 did doesn't sound good. On top of it, I read it was released on Tuesday while its predecessor on Friday.

It's quite funny they said they weren't too happy about Devil May Cry 4 sales which is the best-selling entry (2.6 million worldwide).

Far Cry and Hitman outsold their predecessors' launch week despite the weak market and drastic gameplay changes... maybe people really wanted their white haired Dante?

And sonic is higher so it should be getting at least close to those 330. I think i'm getting into 10-20%% error margin here.
All the COD maximum tells you is that everything at or below COD is below 330 units. It can not be extrapolated to titles above COD, it is a maximum not a minimum.

I think it also helps that both Ubi and SquareEnix actually put some of their marketing muscle behind those games and launched during a period where people were willing to spend a little bit of extra cash on presents. Capcom have kind of sent DmC out to die over here.

Sony and Nintendo both need a massive kick to their corporate head if such sales aren't going to wake them up. Abysmal performance of both WiiU and Vita. And in both cases the gunshot wound was self inflicted.

It's hard not to gloat about both these companies recent failures, when both displayed an utter disconnect from the market.

Eh, I'd say it's a marketing thing, or more what they didn't want rather what they did. [And state of the market]

Irish chart

http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/ire/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=210015

The strangest ballet ever (NSMB2 going out of top 10/back in top 10/way out of top 10/tenth again; MK7 in top 20/out top 20/in top 20) continues. :lol

Btw, are we really sure Sing Party debuted this week? Because less than 330 in its debut week is awful. And it could be an hint of how Wii U userbase will react to Lego City Undercover.

Debut's at 7th? Eeek.
Although with HMV and GAME now gone, the Irish numbers must be even smaller.

I was kinda addressing the whole going after "men in their 20s" PR statement that Sony did :) Those are strong IPs, for consoles. But how strong are they for handhelds? That's the question.
I understand. Was there a strong market for this to begin with though? Or are Sony trying to appeal more to that audience on the consoles?

For the 3 big games (COD, AC, FIFA), i think all of them will sell at least 0.5 million worldwide. Bundles will help for sure on achieving this, but at least the games get into people hands one way or the other.

Yeah, it was released on Friday last week (January 18th). I'm not sure that it is any indication on how Lego City Undercover will sell though. It is afterall a very different game.

Over a third is such a strange term to use. I am thinking it may have sold 33 percent more then dmc4 and not only a third of what DMC 4 sold. If the numbers were so significantly less then dmc4 would you not say something along the lines of "it sold less then 40 percent or it only sold just over 33 percent of what dmc4 sold?" It is very strange wording they used.
Even if it sold 33% more I'd say that wouldn't be a particularly good result either. Games tend to be more frontloaded at this point in the generation, so even if DmC had opened a little stronger than DMC4 I'm not sure if that would have been enough to outsell it in the end.
Selling just one third is completely awful, though. I don't think the game deserves that but Capcom kinda had it coming.

If you want to sell your game, you blanket bomb TV ad breaks with it. This isn't rocket science. If you get this shit into peoples eyes, they will thirst for it and want to buy.

Capcom hasn't exactly been doing TV ads recently, Sega neither. The result is lower sales. In comparison, Sony made Wonderbook sell enough to loiter the charts all through Christmas because they aggressively marketed it.

Am hoping to fuck Konami has the nouse to advertise the shit out of Metal Gear Rising, but I bet they won't. Platinum needs to hire an angry guy that will just yell "IF YOU ARE NOT DOING A TV AD, YOU ARE FUCKING US" down the phone to the publisher. My rates are competitive.

Put a missing just into the sentence and it fixes it instantly. (slightly / a little also have the same effect)

"DMC sells just over a third of what ‘Devil May Cry 4’ did at launch when it also reached No1"

It was just poorly written.

I'd be interested to see what the first week sales data was for DMC4 in the U.K., but I imagine that'd be difficult to scrounge up.

We didn't have the monthly charts back then, so I have no idea.

[360] DMC4 crossed 100k in June, 2008, so I imagine [warning, made up numbers ahead] 70k first week sales?? It had 61% of the sales so 115k total. "Over one third" of it is like 40k??

Any hint from the actual numbers would be nice... ;P

Hack and Slay is over, the next GoW will show it.

How many big budget hack'n slash games there have been in recent years? Considering that GoW III is best selling game in the series I really wouldn't draw that conclusion yet. Of course Ascension will not sell as much as III because it's not numbered sequel and it's coming so late in the gen but it will still do good numbers especially in US.

There's been zero WiiU data for Aus/NZ right? I'd be curious to see some numbers, but from my personal observations I suspect they're pretty poor. Hopefully not a disaster on the level of the UK though! Don't want my local stores to abandon the WiiU like they did with GameCube after a while :-(

Did we get any 2012 totals? Hardware or Software primarily?

Not surprised Halo 4 dropped, I saw it for £54 in Tesco/Asda!
