Pokemon Diamond shines brightest

30/Jul/2007

Potter-mania is replaced by Poke-mania as Nintendo’s hugely successful franchise debuts with DS games ‘Pokemon Diamond’ at No1 and ‘Pokemon Pearl’ at No3. ‘Pokemon Diamond’ becomes the fastest selling DS game as well as the 2nd fastest selling Pokemon game, behind ‘Pokemon Yellow’ on Gameboy Colour which was released over 7 years ago.

Activision’s multi-format ‘Transformers: The Game’ almost spoils Nintendo’s party with the launch of the film helping boost sales by 76%, but failing to catch ‘Pokemon Diamond’ at the top by only 217 units. ‘Transformers: The Game’ remains at No2 in the All Formats Chart and holds on to top spot in the PS2 and Xbox 360 Charts with the PSP version climbing to No1 this week. ‘Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix’ falls from No1 to No4 as sales level out. There are now 4 DS exclusives and 2 Wii exclusives in the All Formats Top 10 (all published by Nintendo) with the remaining 4 Top 10 titles all released across a large number of formats (from publishers Activision and EA). ‘Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree’ proves that brain training is not just a DS phenomenon by increasing sales by 44% on its launch week, but falling one place to No5, while ‘Wii Play’ drops 2 places to No7 despite a rise in sales of 22%. Both brain training DS games continue to sell well despite ‘More Brain Training’ slipping 3 places to No6 and the original dropping one place to No9.

The All Formats Top 10 is rounded off by ‘Shrek the Third’ at No8 and ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07’ at No10, while there are new entries for ‘Rugby 08’ from EA at No22 and Activision’s DS game ‘Transformers: The Game – Autobot’ at No38.

Hum, Resistance on the chart?

Either they sold lots of new PS3s this week (what else are you gonna buy with it? :p) or this doesn't make sense

First post updated with Ireland, Full Price chart from UK and the press release for UK (Transformers almost stealing Pokémon Diamond's first place!)

Pokemon not occupying top two slots shocker!

I was wondering if Pokemania was wearing off a bit. Diamond has been behind the Wii all week on Amazon and Pearl is well down the top ten (I know Amazon doesn't mean a lot, but it's something).

The games only released on the 27th.

its one of the benefits of having an online community that sticks around, methinks.

and if it was bundled, then a LOT of people must have bought that bundle to have motorstorm be not so behind resistance.

holy crap at ps3 games coming back... every couple weeks there seems to be a wave of people jumping on Resistance/Motostorm/F1 championship racing...

very very strange...

Damn some of the older first party PS3 games making a come back. Do bundled games get counted for this list?

Not in official bundles..but they do in unofficial ones. As the official bundle is due August 2nd it means all the current bundled software is included in the chart.

Well, bundle or not, it shows that PS3's keep selling well in UK (and yeah, I think those sales may come from "custom" starter packs", that is store making those without being the "true", official pack)

Oxx said:
Yeah, but this is Pokemon.

I didn't expect Transformers to be so close to Diamond.

Still, Pokemon will have insane legs.

Stop trying to damn it with faint praise.

It's the fastest selling DS game ever in the UK - what do you want it to be the zeroth fastest selling?

And look at the top ten - six Nintendo first party titles. They don't even have it that good in Japan sometimes and this is the UK, where the pre-DS Nintendo's name has been mud.

The starter pack released in the UK on the 18th I believe? It should have rolled out completely in Europe by August 2nd.

The major game stores (Game and Gamestation) offer their own bundles (Game = PS3+Sixaxis+3 set games for £425, Gamestation = PS3+Sixaxis+2 games from a list for £399) rather than having the official bundle, since their bundles are a better deal anyway.

one game on at least 6 platforms, boosted by 76% failed to hit top spot occupied by one game on one platform!!

And the top 20 is almost reading like a Japanese chart!!

Oh I didn't know that. I have yet to see an official bundle in store to be honest. Maybe they are getting rid of the old stock first.

Much closer than I thought - If the DS games for transformers had been included it would have been number 1!! (due to a different wording of the title & split versions they don't count :lol)

Pokemon combined destroyed everything this week and dragged a lot of other DS games up.

The rises in Wii software %ages are great.

PS3 bundles with those 3 exclusive games are in all stores with 2 controllers for £425 (Woolworths/Dixons etc. as well as game stores) at the moment and are HEAVILY press advertised. Retailers are still trying to shift their launch allocation of hardware...

Seeing is people usually like doing this;

Games per Platform on the Full Chart list (UK):

Wii: 9 games (Sonic being the lowest)
360: 4, perhaps up to 7 (has FlatOut been released on PC in Europe yet? If not, the the number is at least 5, not 4.
PS3: 7 (whoa!)
Nintendo DS: 28 (HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!) (Transformers: Decepticons being the lowest)

That's mostly because the bundles retailers are doing were already better than the official bundle. 2 controllers, 2 games and a film or two for £400.

Wii software sales continue to do very well, even rising in sales over the week prior.

PS3 games charted because there's been many retailers doing non-official bundles. This was the case in last week's charts, too, and is the reason why you see Resistance and Motorstorm (its two top games) rising the most.

Mario Strikers hanging in there. Keep it up, lil buddy!

Aside from Nintendo software, there's only licensed stuff in the Top 10. Nintendo saves the industry once again!

I think you'd have to take up Resistance's actual sales up with Sales-Age. This just sounds like the same sketchy Sony PR they've been doing for the past couple years.

Don't worry, it isn't your countries fault for having good taste in games.
I must admit that I didn't even look at the games on there. It's just usually 2 or 3 posts before someone says the UK taste in games is sh*te. :lol

On behalf of the UK I apologise for what people are buying.

:lol :lol :lol

I don't know whether to support this statement or celebrate that the UK has a large and diverce game buying audience :lol

Wow at DS software sales.

He means sometimes there aren't even six Nintendo titles in the top 10in Japan, but in the UK there is right now.

In any case, Pokemon Pearl behind transformers is a shocker. Even if it came out the 27th, I would've still expected it at #2.

For real???
What is this "Nintendo Top Ten" then?

Not to mention that for some reason they bundle all versions of a game together (and Transformers: The Game was released on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, DS and PSP).
