PAL Charts - Week 38, 2010

I'd expected a slightly softer fall-off, though - something around the 150k mark, perhaps? - but it should chug away for yonks.
It's not particularly unusual for the megahits. GTA IV dropped 77% in its second week and Modern Warfare 2 dropped by 86%

I don't think that's right. The absolute best case scenario for SC this week is:

Halo: 85k
DR2 360: 42.5k
DR2 PS3: (42.5k - 1)
Civ 5: (42.5k - 2)
SC: (42.5k - 3)

Which means that with a 12% drop it sold around 48k last week. However it's likely to be a fair bit worse than this.

Not sure if it helps with the math, but the DR2 split is 63-36 in the 360's favour:

Edit: btw, The Guardian has the platform share for the top 10 every week.

Wouldn't Sony rather have consumers moving (pun intended) to the PS3 platform because of Move?
I imagine they prefer to treat PS3 as an entity, with Move being one of PS3's options, not a seperate platform. PS3 sales figures should not depending strictly on Move performance and vice versa. PS3 is doint quite well at the moment, it sold 13M last FY.
Microsoft creates a huge dissonance between traditional 360 customers and potential Kinect customers, with nothing appealing in Kinect for the first group and with very scarce post-Holiday Kinect line-up, the latter group might also be disappointed in the platform if they are not interested in 360's legacy line-up. Sony seems to want to avoid that pitfall.

Previous Halos dropped off from the main top 40, though they were reappearing on some occasions. Too bad we don't seem to get sales awards, we can't keep track of long term sales anymore. :/
We do get them on a monthly basis though. I guess we'll have to wait until next week then.

Opus Angelorum said:
The goal for Sony is to attract 'casual' gamers (I hate using that term). If Move only appeals to a small percentage of the current PS3 install base then that is the failure?
That's the thing. I'm not so sure Sony's long term strategy is to attract casuals, though if the thing suddenly gets picked up by the casual crowd, I don't think Sony'll waste time in altering that strategy a bit.

From what I've seen, Move seems to be like an assist to playing core games in the near future. In fact, is there even any more casual type games on the horizon for Move?

Opus Angelorum said:

I'm not sure anything I said disagrees with that.

Fundamentally Sony wants more software euros.

It's a bit more subtle than 'just' attracting new kinds of consumers. But that's obviously one substantial part.

The other is enticing existing users to buy more software, or kinds of software they weren't buying on the platform before.

There's a number of different types of consumer that's being targeted here. The non-PS3 owner. The PS3 only owner. The 'shared' owner who owns other consoles. For example, with a PS3/Wii owner, Move allows Sony to compete for spend on 'a certain kind of game' that they weren't competing for at all to date. If that owner spends less on Wii games because they're spending on Move, in addition to what they were otherwise spending on PS3 that's 'expanded market' for Sony even though it's with an existing PS3 owner. In my own case, among my family, nearly always a couple of Wii games would be bought around Christmas just to play over the break while everyone is in the house and bored. Now that there's Move, that money may well be spent elsewhere this year.

For Sony and Microsoft with these new platforms, it's more general than attracting new users but new usage which encompasses all flavours of increased software share, wherever it comes from. If Microsoft was focusing only on new users, they'd be missing a beat. I think they've belatedly realised that.

ELSPA sales awards? I've just been looking for them myself and all of the old pages are now gone. Have we stopped getting them now?
I don't think they do them any more after the UKIE rebrand.

So... basically from now on we won't get any sales numbers in Europe? Bad time to be a sales-ager :(

Also, going back to the Move topic, you need to remember that Sony have said they won't be ramping up their marketing properly until mid-October. If Sony have the same sales target as Kinect (3 million), they should easily reach it. Not bad for a company with a very muted marketing budget.

Wow Sports Champions dropped like a rock.

Is that wishful thinking? ;) I thought so to for a minute, but as stated before it only dropped 12%. There's just a lot of big new titles out this week.

Interfectum said:

12% is quite a low drop, and it only fell behind three new releases. If we see the same pattern for the next few weeks (and it falls below older titles), then it might be an issue.

i think week after next it will rising again.. shopping season and "hopefully" a good marketing strategy n word of mouth will give it a strong support.

1-10% = Stone.
11-33% = Rock.
34-66% = Boulder.
67-100% = Lead Balloon.

Not sure why that last one isn't 'Uluru', but there you go.

:lol

Moving on...

I'm suprised Halo only managed one week at no1 and what a drop... we're talking lead balloon territory here folks.

Also suprised 360 F1 beat the PS3 vers... although only very slightly.

Oddly locally the PS3 version is harder to find. Why the stores didn't order more has been put down to people not pre-ordering it and stores been caught out with demand. I guess the stock is in the channel but it took a friend of mine a few tries to find a copy.

SportChamp's 2nd week is as expected, the problem is people don't seem to be rushing out to buy the other stuff - or sales are split between the other titles. Why Sony didn't pack in a game and a 2nd ballstick thing together like WiiPlay I have no idea... I expect SpCh to keep falling gently over the next few weeks as the big core releases are out and then to gather momentum towards Xmas as the adverts hit.

Kinect is in store in town at the moment though and may steal some of it's thunder.

As a side note I'd never considered that most of Toy Story's sales were on the DS - those are interesting percentages!

Opus Angelorum said:
Indeed, most people including myself had the PS3 version ahead purely because of its Playstation roots.

I know a lot of my friends in England who used to play F1 games on the Amiga, long before PlayStation. They all have Xboxes now...

WiiFit Plus + Balance Board still in the top 5 is somehow surrealist.

It dropped like Nintendo product :D

p.s. sony predicted between 4 and 6 million for full year.

That's interesting, thanks.

You can see the Prince of Persia games are bookending a large portion of the top 40 despite a 60/34 split of 360/PS3, so most games between are selling about as well as the PC version of F1 2010. (2% of combined F1 sales). I'd guess something like 3-6k.

For what it's worth this link says Sony's launch F1 game sold 43,000 copies in total, I don't know if that's UK or Europe wide.

Good, maybe they'll finally let us British fools play the damn thing!

As for F1, do shops really base the number of copies to order on pre-order numbers? Isn't that quite a bad strategy? Well, it certainly explains the shortages of certain games recently.

Garjon said:

So I've heard, I never thought it was a good strategy to base your expectations around crazy people who reserve games 6 months in advance just for kicks. (No offence, crazy people!)

In their defense, they don't have any other real data though.

And I'm sure pre-orders aren't 100% responsible for the number of copies they order. General interest in the title, talking to customers, media, etc. also probably have some input, but that's of course a lot harder to quantify.

gofreak said:
If SC was around 70k or 80k sold to date...is this bad? Under expectations?

If it was representative of performance across Europe, then EU sales to date could be in the 350-400k region?

This wouldn't seem bad at all to me. Depending on the attach rate of the game with Move it would suggest pretty decent things for Move sales too. Or I don't know, did people expect multi-million Move users (and thus maybe a million copies of SC) in ~10 days in Europe?

edit - the week on week drop is also small. That may reflect good word of mouth which ought to help it build steadily if it keeps up.

Those are pretty strong sales of Sports Champions, and pretty steady sales (not much drop off from the previous week). I'd call that a success.

We are talking about one country only and we don't even know the numbers. I don't think we can say anything about moves success yet.

Redbeard said:

Well if it remains steady and only falls 10-15% for the next two weeks then it would be around 100k for the month, which is around 2.5% of the UK PS3 install base. I wouldn't call that a success...yet.

First time I am seeing smiling on my face when it comes to theses charts. Mafia 2, Civ V, Dragon Quest IX are all still there. amazing.

Kingdom Hearts is out of top 40 in it's 3rd week, same thing happened to Peace Walker :\ .
It's kinda odd, PSP games stop selling completely very fast, you would expect the game should hang around 20-40 position considering numbers must be really low for those games, but no it just drops out of the chart completely and will never come back :| .
at least they have charted. I can't remember DS SE and high profile japanese 3rd party game charting since FF IV...

Are people thinking it's bundled with the move? Move sales are much harder to gauge.
One thing we know is there's over 100k Eyepets and more PSEyes out there pre-Move than Sports Champion sales so far.

Withnail said:
Yeah that's useful info, thanks. It means the SC sales are lower than we thought. Best case is now ~30k this week, ~64k to date.

64k for 2 weeks doesnt seem good to me and that is the best case.

This time of year? Perhaps it's not too bad, but I think we need another week or two to really get a feel for what's going to happen next.

What is there coming down the line to drive Move sales? I get the impression there's what we have now, then nothing really but patched-in support and optional control schemes. Are there any more Sports Champion/Start the Party-type games coming out?

* List from guardian.co.uk

That's an incredibly incomplete list :P

Go to iwaggle for a fuller list. But more 'dedicated' stuff like Singstar Dance, Time Crisis, The Shoot, their fighting game, various other fitness games etc. are coming over the next couple of months.

I think Move depends more on word of mouth building than on spiking around new software releases to keep hardware moving, though. Sony will be hoping games like Sports Champions continue to sell Move over the holidays, in conjunction with other software rather than spiking and leaving a new release to come along to pick up the slack.

gofreak said:

Well it hits most of the bigger Move titles, certainly in the near future.

That is absolutely essential, they need a core experience game that everyone who picks up Move will want. As you say, they cannot afford to let sales slip in between 'big' releases.

Yep the sales are quite telling:

08 (__) 360 Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock (Activision Blizzard)
23 (__) PS3 Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock (Activision Blizzard)

Looks like Guitar Hero really needs a year or so break at this point (or much much longer)

I think the music games genre will never return to what it once was. You can have a long hiatus between games but I don't think the mass market wants new games.

The Beatles: Rock Band was a massive disappointment, even in the UK IRC. That to me it's a clear sign that it's all over.

Not sure if this was posted but Sony spent £750,000 for the launch of Move in the UK.
