EA’s ‘FIFA 12’ claims the third biggest All Formats launch week, outdoing last year’s ‘FIFA 11’ (up 18% in units and 34% in revenue), by overtaking Grand Theft Auto IV, with only the two Call of Duty’s ahead (Black Ops at No1and Modern Warfare 2 at No2).

Xbox 360 continues to be the format of choice with 54% of the share (up 27% from last year) compared to PS3’s 44% (up 11% from last year). The other formats are left behind with only a 2% share (last year was 4% and the year before 6%). Last week’s two new entries have therefore shuffled down with Microsoft’s ‘Gears of War 3’ (-76%) at No2 and Codemasters’ ‘F1 2011’ (-39%) at No3. 505 Games’ ‘Zumba Fitness’ (+14%) holds steady at No4, with Deep Silver’s ‘Dead Island’ (-6%) dropping another two places to No5. Eidos/Square’s ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’ (-8%) is down a place to No6 followed by Sony’s high definition upgrade of two classic PS2 titles ‘ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection’ out this week on the PS3. Ubisoft’s ‘Driver: San Francisco’ (-12%) drops two places to No8 despite the release of the PC version, Disney’s ‘Lego Pirates of the Caribbean’ (+8%) stands fast at No9 and back in the top 10 is chart regular ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+47%) at No10. Activision Blizzard’s new entry, ‘X-Men: Destiny’, comes in at No18 and Ubisoft’s ‘Child of Eden’ (+765%) jumps up the chart to No29 thanks to the release of the PS3 version.

Moreover, actually...Fifa always appeard for PSP, but never for DS.
And this is the first time that an entry on a Nintendo handled appears.
So...this should mean that 3DS is doing worse than PSP, and that DS was a disaster compared to the mighty PSP...rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiight?

8. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection

I think thats pretty decent. They are such amazing games.

Its good to see people take notice of them.

Okay, okay. I'm uninformed. Still, all of the 3DS software is dead, which means that the hardware probably is as well.

Does FIFA on 3DS not have an online mode? I know the last one I played on PSP did, lol.
No. EA refuses to put online into 3DS games for some reason.

I suppose it's something that ICO/SoTC entered in the top ten.

It's pretty amazing that FIFA has overtaken GTA IV as a bigger launch. Of course, install base much higher now, but still. EA have done an amazing job with FIFA. It's so sad though that Konami completely, er, dropped the ball with PES.

Here's the platform breakdown from The Guardian.

I am not surprised that Ico/ SotC collection didn't make the list in the Netherlands. I am trying to buy the thing for days now. None of the shops have it in stock. Is it even released here?

3DS in officially doing worse than PSP. :(
Yup. Y'know the real kiss of death? I picked one up yesterday. I find myself attracted to ailing hardware for some reason.

Still, that's +1 sale for Ghost Recon next week.

At this point in time, im start to question if games like Mario Kart 7 will do much for the 3DS situation. I'm sure that the game will sell great, but will it be a game that turns things around for the 3DS drasticly? I have my doubts now, but we'll see.

EDIT: Thinking mostly about the situation in the UK then.

I know one thing, in my local Gamestation there is less space dedicated to the 3DS than there is to the huge display marked 'Smartphones / Tablets'. That can't be a good sign for the 3DS.

I'm not surprised at the lack of 3DS games in the charts though, the software selection is crap. I wanted to pick up a couple of games yesterday but after looking at the selection, I only grabbed Ghost Recon.

Not correct.

Although released a week/weeks later, the DS has had the FIFA games every year.

Yeah, i agree that the current 3DS software lineup in Europe isnt exactly that great. And because of this it would make sense that many are "thristy" for some killer app games for the 3DS. But i'm just wondering if there will be enough of these games out.

Do you mean appear in the sales charts or appear on a Nintendo handheld? I think that every FIFA game except FIFA 99 have been released on Nintendo handhelds since FIFA 95 (the first FIFA game was FIFA "94" if i'm not mistaken).

Yes, I meant on the chart.
I knew that there have been FIFA entries last years on DS.
I was talking about charts.

EDIT: And you know what?
FIFA 11 entered at 26th position, after years and years of a great battle despite the install base.
At least, 3DS version entered the chart at the first appearance... and with an install base much much much lower than the DS (more than 1 million in Europe at 14 August 2011)

EDIT2: Basically, what BKK has highlighted in the post after mine, lol.

Yeah, DS needed to have an enormous install base to finally see its version of FIFA appearaing on chart, and neither in top...20.
So, according to BurntPork's criteria, 3DS should already be at 2009 DS numbers... LOL.
FIFA is NOT an indicator of portable console's strenght, unfortunately.
And this version doesn't even have online! Even if it seems that it has a good amount of content.
Very curious about Need for Speed, which should have not only online, but even the famous Autolog.
...But why are we talking about FIFA 3DS?!? There's something more important regarding the console to talk about.
...Metallic Red was out last week, right?

What do you mean exactly? All we know at the moment is that only big releases stay in the chart for more than 2-3 weeks, and getting more of those games out there is obviously gonna give 3DS more of a presence in the chart. It will however need at least a holiday season behind it before it has an installed base large enough for catalogue sales to make a permanent presence.

I think it will be similar to what happened with DS, personally. First the system takes off in Japan and then the west follows suit in the following six months or so.

I dont see how people can say PC is healthy with this:

Xbox 360 continues to be the format of choice with 54% of the share (up 27% from last year) compared to PS3’s 44% (up 11% from last year). The other formats are left behind with only a 2% share (last year was 4% and the year before 6%

So, being generous and saying PC is half of that 2%, it's 1% of sales. OK, even if you said DD was 8 times that, it would still be only 8% (and I'm sure DD is nothing close to 8x, doubt it's even close to as big as retail sales frankly).

I guess, to be sure Fifa is probably very far from PC centric game. One of many games that controls much better on a controller.

For gears sales, assuming something like 320k sales first week based on Road's posting, 1/4 of that means maybe 80k this week (obviously only guesstimate).

Isn't this the exact same thing that happened with the original DS?
Granted it wasn't as bad as the 3DS, but the DS had hardly any games for the first few months too then Mario Kart came out and it took off like a rocket.

I just noticed there's no FIFA DS this year, seems a bit premature for EA to drop it already. There's still quite a lot of other games being released for DS this year.

In spite of the lack of online, FIFA 3DS looks quite cool in every other aspect. I find the lack of online curious, and I don't think its out of laziness -- Nintendo have been cagey about putting out online titles, I think that whatever Nintendo are doing with EA and co on the Wii-U online system is being extended to 3DS, and unfortunately FIFA 12's release schedule was ahead of wherever they are with that. It wouldn't surprise me anyway. I'm going to pick up FIFA 12 on the 360 next week, if I see the 3DS version going at a good price, I'd buy it just to have a decent FIFA on the go.

Football Manager 2012 will do fine on PC in a few weeks.

Fifa 12 for 360 should be new I think.

Too bad we only get to see the top 5 of the French charts, I'd like to know what more versions of Gears and F1 they're selling there.

I'm just not as confident now that a few titles will turn the 3DS into a DS situation. I expected more from the pricedrop until now (it has been nearly 2 months) even with the current software, that is mostly why i'm not as confident that a few titles will turn things around big time. I could be wrong of course, and i actually hope that i am =)

True, but that was about 6 years ago. It was also the birth of "Touch Generation", that isnt DS "exclusive" anymore. But as i mentioned over here, i could be wrong =) And i'm not talking about "doomed!" just so that is said. I'm just not as confident that it will reach DS levels after a few games.

Are there any specific games you expected to perform better than they did?

Here're the releases since the price drop on August 12. (Charting games with parentheses.)

Week ending

Aug 13: Nothing released (Zelda #5.)
Aug 20: Nothing released (Zelda #2, Rayman #32.)
Aug 27: Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions (Zelda #7, Rayman #39)
Sep 03: Driver: Renegade 3D, DualPenSports (Zelda #12.)
Sep 10: Star Fox 64 3D (#11), Thor: God of Thunder (Zelda #19)
Sep 17: Nothing released (Star Fox #14, Zelda #31, Rayman #36, Rabbits #37)
Sep 24: Nothing released (Star Fox #34)
Oct 01: FIFA 12 (#30), Angler’s Club: Ultimate Bass Fishing 3D.

Even with this meekly lineup it's a notable step up from the pre-Zelda time of pretty much nothing charting. I don't think the 3DS will turn into the DS just like that either, but I see no reason it can't continue to improve.

Because a FIFA game is selling marginally better? Or is there some other metric you're using?

Dedicated handheld gaming is dead in the West.

Didn't you get the memo? :o)

Are there any specific games you expected to perform better than they did?

I first expected to see more appearances from older 3DS games after the pricedrop since people i guessed that people would pick up some games as well when buying the hardware. Also with Star Fox, when Star Fox drops out of the Top 40 in its 4th week, i wonder how other 3DS games will do. Granted, Star Fox is probably not a HUGE franchise, but it is one of the few good/great 3DS games that are out so far, so i though that more people would want it when the other 3DS software selection is fairly limited.

Sure, it can and most likely will contunie to improve, but to what level? I'm just not confident enough right now that 2-3 games will be enough to make the 3DS rise to DS level. I'm not trying to sound like a negative nelly hehe, but it is just a thought i had on the situation that i wanted to share. But as i said, it is just a guess from me and i'm actually hoping that i'm wrong.

I would be amazed if it reached DS level, but I would have been amazed at that even before it was released. DS was lightning in a bottle. Not reaching DS level isn't even close to failure.

Sure, i agree to that. Personally i concider the PS3 as a good sales success eventhough that it isnt close to how much the PS2 sold. I just wonder how much the 3DS will increase when the big games hit.
