One week after the launch of ‘GTA V’, the biggest game of all time (week 1 sales), the rollercoaster journey into Q4 continues with the launch this week of EA’s 8-format ‘FIFA 14’ debuting at No1.

In terms of the FIFA series the current version is down on last year’s record-breaker ‘FIFA 13’ by around 24% in volume, possibly due to all the money spent last week and also perhaps due to the nature of a transitional year, where consumers may be delaying this purchase until PS4/Xbox One versions are available. In terms of 8-format games, only 2 other titles have been released simultaneously in the same week on 8 formats (EA’s FIFA 13 last year and EA’s Need For Speed: Carbon back in 2006, another transitional year).

Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA V’ drops to No2 (-83%) but even with such a drop this week 2 number is equivalent to being the 18th biggest week if ranked against week 1 sales of any other games ever released. Microsoft are back in the Top 3 after a 5 week break thanks to ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’, No3 (-2%) and Konami drop 2 places to No4 having debuted last week with ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2014’ (-46%). Sony drop 2 places to No5 with ‘The Last of Us’ (-41%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Rayman Legends’ re-enters the Top 10 thanks to some price promotion, No10 (+34%).

GTA5 sales are monstrous. It's basically sold as much as all software combined on the PS3 and 360 for the last three months (Jun-Aug).

It's sold over 10x as much as all Wii U or Vita software for the entire year through August.

Interesting that two big EA cross gen launches are down yoy (Madden and FIFA). If the pattern continues I'd expect the same for Battlefield. People really are holding out for next gen, and doesn't seem like trade in programs are stopping them.

I don't think you appreciate how small of a country the UK is. The entire population of the entire region is less than 1/5th of the United States. More than 2.6 million people there bought the game in the first 12 days, that's equivalent so far to a game selling 13 million copies in a single month here. First month. It would be impossible for the game to continue selling at that rate.

Further perspective: It comes out to better than 1 out of every 25 people in the entire country owning the game,

When you take out the elderly and the very young, and allow for the fact that more than one person will on average play each copy (e.g. older brother buys it and lets his younger brother play it) that's quite incredible to contemplate.

I think the 2nd game didn't chart in the UK too, so nothing surprising. It sells best in France, Spain and Italy I think. And yes, it sells mostly in time I guess.

Splinter cell seems to have a higher percentage of sales than a lot fo third party wii u titles, beating the physical PC version. Still pretty poor sales, but hopefully if its beating the PC version then enough for Ubi to bother with hardcore third party games. At least Rayman Legends is doing well on the 'U
